Comparing High-end Shared 2 VP 2 Low Dedicated

Jul 9, 2008

As a non-tech but looong term sufferer in the Hosting biz both as a consumer and VERY briefly a supplier ( strictly for masochists IMHO ), over the years I found it was only specific individuals - not the Hosting Company that was the key point.

Good support people are really needed more today than ever before. It is sooo complex - as follows:

We are looking at leaving our unsupported VERY small Dedicated Server after two years of frustration trying to get a secure, reliable system going without success. A mixed bag of problems: Us being non-geeks, OS problems, Server problems.

We are looking at going back to a VPS in the light of amazing claims being made for them today.

A fraction of the cost of Dedicated and yet *claims* of astounding capability. CLAIMS...

That's why I'm here today with you. I need help sorting the facts out. Can a VPS that : is "burstable" for RAM and with amazing pipe access and volume allowance and the new concept of "sorta like load balancing" sharing workload over possibly hundreds of Servers in a giant cluster" actually be real?

If this is true it would be Server heaven for me as the Provider has to do all the Geek-stuff!

[EU] High Quality/uptime Shared

Jun 23, 2008

it was quite a while since the last time i was using some of the shared/reseller hosts. As far as i can see, there's A BUNCH of new shared/reseller hosts here at WHT everyday. So i can't really distinguish what host to choose.

This shared account will be used to host just one site/one domain. The site is very light, diskspace and traffic can be very low. It can be plesk or cpanel control panel. Linux OS, PHP5.

What i'm actually looking for is a European host WITHOUT overselling, with high quality bandwith and uptime, accepting paypal/moneybookers payments. This website does not require a lot of traffic, less than 1gig a month, but it really needs to be fast europe bandwith with HIGH uptime.

The host does not need to be years in business, it can be new host as long as the quality of service is very high.

There are no price limits, as far as the price justify what host has to offer.

I've looked at some shared offers from europe hosts in which i usually rent dedi's, such as leaseweb, netrouting, eurovps, hetzner... Does anyone have experience with their shared hosting offers?

High Quality Shared Hosting

Oct 13, 2008

quality shared hosting solution for a WordPress-powered multi user blog. The blog currently has around 1000 posts, 5000 comments and around 2000 unique visitors every day, but those numbers will grow grow exponentially in future, so the hosting in question needs to be expandable since I will eventually have to move to a dedicated server.

Right now, however, I want a quality US-based hosting company that has good connection to EU, with fast support and basic features: PHP5, MySQL5, shell access, ~10GB HD space and ~50-100GB traffic.

First and foremost I am looking for quality and am prepared to pay as much as $25-30 per month.

Shared Host For High Traffic Blog

Jun 4, 2009

Is there any shared host which can easily drive a wordpress blog with 100,000-150,000 unique visitors every month?

The blog in question has wp-supercache and is quite a bit tweaked and consumes roughly 30-50GB of bandwidth every month (with mod deflate enabled on server). My priorities are good uptime, fast servers and network (especially to India) and good customer support.

Shared Hosting With High Reliability Email

Jun 24, 2008

Is there any conventional wisdom on WHT about which shared hosting providers have highly reliable email service?

The provider I have now has very good web hosting service but their email services tend to bitbucket far too much mail for comfort. Reliable delivery and reception for the half a dozen emails I might send/receive a day (it's a personal use site) is I hope not too much to ask without needing to pay and arm and a leg for the privilege.

Dedicated With Cpanel Migration From Shared To Dedicated

Sep 8, 2008

I have an account that is going from a shared hosting account to a dedicated with theplanet and I want to transfer it. Concerns I have is that the site is using an SSL. What things do I need to watch out for when transferring. Since I don't have root access I will have to do this transfer with the account function, correct?

This site has a database and SSL, so I thought it would hopefully be easier to use the cpanel account migration tool

Im a webdesigner so when looking for hosting i try to find one that is simple to manage, hardware powerful, lots of ready to install scripts and a beautiful webmail like Atmail or Zimbra.

Until now i have looked at:
- Mediatemple
(as @mail, exelent support but slow in Europe)

- Mosso
(is always good to be powered by rackspace but i think that the cloud hosting concept is still unsstable. Any experience?

- SimpleHelix (realy fast magento demo store, lots of scripts, @Mail and seems to have a fast network to europe)

So any advices on premium shared hosting?

An in Europe, any company similar to mediatemple or simplehelix?

Comparing VPS Vs Dedi Plan...

Sep 6, 2008

I am trying to make a decision on switching from my current VPS hosting to a dedicated solution. If I rent the server in the next 24 hours from Theplanet, I can get a Celeron 2.0+ with 1GB of ram and an 80GB hd for $74/month (plus $25 setup). $15/month of that is for doubling the ram to 512MB, so I could get the same without that for $59/month.

Comparisons:
VPS: 2 1.6Mhz Dual-Core AMD Opteron Processor 2210 HE's, I don't know how many people share that
Dedi: Celeron 2.0, all mine. (and yes, I know that is potentially a bit of a downgrade)

VPS: 512MB ram and 1024MB swap
Dedi: 1024MB ram (guessing I set my own swap size?)

VPS: 25GB allocated space
Dedi: 80GB hd

VPS: 1.5Mbps connection
Dedi: 10Mbps connection

VPS: CP+ control panel
Dedi: None included (could install Webmin myself, which is free, never used it before though)

VPS: Their DNS servers
Dedi: Need to use my own

So basically the parts I don't know the difference between would be the processor, the control panel, and what the performance impact on running primary and secondary DNS servers on the same box as the webserver. Anyone have any feedback on those points?

Separate question... assuming I go for it, what would be the deciding factors on OS, if the choices were CentOS 4.x, CentOS 5.x, FreeBSD 6.3, or FreeBSD 7.0?

Reliable Way Of Comparing Provider's Speed

Oct 27, 2009

What's a reliable method of comparing the network speed between two providers? They often put up a 50MB or 100MB file to download, but I'm not certain how to go about testing their bandwidth.

I can't just download the file from my home connection -- my link is probably capped at 10 Mbps. Is there an external service that I can use?

Exceptionally High Memory Usage On My Dedicated

Oct 4, 2009

I'm currently running vBulletin & two wordpress powered blogs on my box. Number of simultaneous users is about 200~250 and about 15~20 logged in users.

The memory usage is constantly in the range of 1.8 GB - 2.00 GB. Considering that total physical RAM my box has is 2 GB, the memory usage, I believe is exceptionally high.

The same site was running very well on shared hosting environment and also on VPS [with just 512 MB RAM] very fine.

What should I do to bring the memory consumption to minimum (required to run the site well?)

Shared? VPS? Dedicated

Oct 22, 2008

I would like to start a site for a gaming community. It will cover a few upcoming mods, so I don't know what to expect at the moment in terms of how much space/bandwidth I need.
The mods support the redirect feature, where if the player does not have the next map, it is automatically downloaded. This is where a portion of the site comes in. I would like to offer the downloadable content (maps/skins/etc.). Maybe looking at multiple users (possibly up to 20) downloading maps around 10-30MB each.

So what would be the best type of host to use in this case? Can I get away with using a cheaper host (shared, VPS)?

Dedicated Vs Shared ....

Nov 23, 2008

creating a site where people will be able to upload videos (haha its much more specific like that lol not like YouTube or anything).

Anyway i've played around with shared hosting for a while, numerous other projects of mine, and all of them seem to have limits on how long a script can run etc.

So say I want users to be able to upload videos up to around 100MB, on a normal shared host they wouldn't be able to do this right? Mainly because the script would time out or CPU usage would be too high? The site is pretty targeted, so I'm not really expecting that many videos to be uploaded, and old ones could be deleted after use.

My question is, to do this properly, do i need to look into a dedicated server? I really don't know much about hosting etc, but it seems that most shared hosts have heavy restrictions on CPU usage.

Dedicated IP More To Shared Ip

Jun 18, 2008

We just set up our current dedicated server and have an ip address. When we created the user account on plesk, we dedicated the ip address to that website. My questions is we would like to add another website to this server and if we change the current dedicate IP address to a shared IP address for the new website, will it mess anything up with our server, how search engines see our site or how the dns or domain name gets forward to our server?

My understanding is you only really need a dedicate IP for either ssl or anoyomous ftp.

From Shared To Dedicated

Dec 13, 2007

I'm planning to launch a user submitted news site tailored for my country and since i've been a coder all my life i know very little about hosting.

Money is a bit of a problem, i want to know whether is it a good idea to start off with a shared hosting and then move on to dedicated hosting as the site grows. I dont want to dump money in dedicated servers at the begining only to find out that me and my buddies are the only ones using the site.

I have a few options at hand. godaddy, bluehost, lunarpages etc... but i really liked the grid computing deal from mediatemple.net (100GB, 1000GB for $20/mo + scalability)

Any Experience With GoDaddy.com Dedicated Hosting? (I Need High Bandwidth)

High Traffic Hosting Solution (dedicated Server?)

Jul 23, 2007

I'm working on launching this online store for a poster designer, and we're becoming more and more aware that we need a really robust and fast server. This site is looking at extremely high levels of activity whenever this designer posts a new poster. We're talking 1700 people surfing the store (downloading med-high resolution poster images) and 300 posters sold in 16 seconds kind of thing.

So, we need a really robust hosting, to work with PHP5 and MYSQL.

My previous go-to hosting provider was Lunarpages, but their customer service has gone down the crapper, and I've just about had it with them. My main questions are:
Should I be looking into getting a dedicated server, or are there hosting companies that can handle this kind of traffic on a shared server? I don't have experience administrating a server, so if we got a dedicated one we would have to pay the host to do at least some of the setup/administration, I would assume?
Dedicated server or not, what's a hosting company that has really good customer service, where we can be assured of getting somebody knowledgeable without having to wait on hold for 20 (or even 10) minutes?

Dedicated Vs Shared IP Addresses ..

Aug 25, 2007

I have a reseller account with cPanel and WHM.

I purchased the extra "dedicated" ip address for my use. I understand it is dedicated exclusively to my accounts, but shared between each of my accounts...

The provider also provides a "shared" ip. I understand that if I did not have my own dedicated ip, then I would use this ip and it would be shared between my accounts, and among all the other accounts on his server...

My question pertains to the way WHM initializes a new account. It assigns the company shared ip to each of my new domain accounts, instead of my dedicated ip.

Pinging the newly created domain account results in seeing the company shared ip - not my dedicated ip.

Is this correct? I think WHM should be assigning my dedicated ip, and ping should show my dedicated ip.
