Comparing Switch & Data To Internap

Jul 15, 2008

I'm in the final stages of bidding on a 10-rack cage, it's come between Internap and Switch & Data.

I know the good about hosting with both of them. Who can tell me the bad?

Please, don't email me telling me about your datacenter, because I'm not looking at any other providers this late in the game.

Switch And Data IPO...

Feb 9, 2007

Switch And Data, a provider of network neutral data centers and colocation services, just had an IPO yesterday. They filed to sell about 1/3 of their shares priced at the high end ($17). I was wondering if anyone here had personal experience with the company, and could offer some insight on how they stack up versus Equinix and other competitors.

Switch And Data trading symbol: SDXC
Equinix trading symbol: EQIX

Equinix has been up a lot this year and has a huge market cap of 2.3Bil ($80/share), with revenues of 269Mil, gross profit 63.7Mil, net income -49Mil.

I calculated Switch And Data has around 35.9 million total shares, which puts its current market cap at around 720Mil ($20/share). I couldn't find any 2006 numbers, but in 2005 they had 105Mil revenues and -11.3Mil net income.

How comparable are these two companies? Does SDXC deserve to trade at a comparable level to EQIX? What do the experts at WHT think?

Switch And Data Venting

Aug 12, 2009

Recently, we expanded our space with Switch and Data. They didn't have any cabinets physically next to our current ones, so they offered us cross-connects with an NRC only (no MRC) between our own existing space and the new. (Of course I didn't get this on the same 1-year contract as everything else.) After a few months, I noticed they've been billing us for them, so I contact our rep. Apparently she "wasn't authorized" to do that, so after some heated emails they're removing the charges to date and charging us the MRCs moving forward. It's over $7K a year for the two.

They also upped their minimum labor charge, so it now cost $175 to have them sign for a FedEx or have any other minimal amount of work done. We have an on-site employee who manages our equipment, but obviously he won't sit there waiting for UPS/FedEx a few times a month. Two instances last month there were employees on site and it cost an hour of labor for them to physically walk two packages onto the data center floor from the front office.

While installing another cross-connect recently, they knocked our patch panel just enough to disconnect a fiber. They charged us for the two hours it took to debug and rectify the issue. The on-site techs assertion was that it must have been "loose" to begin with - of course it worked fine for 6 months prior. You would think a sales person would side with you in a case like this, but they wouldn't budge.

They must be really keen on driving away customers. What really sucks is the connectivity available at their facilities is so amazing. I would brush it off as the cost of doing business if they were up front on all these things, but they aren't.

Options In Switch And Data @ 60 Hudson

May 20, 2008

We are in need of some space in the Switch and Data facility located at 60 Hudson, NYC. This is not negotiable, it absolutely has to be at 60 Hudson in Switch and Data.

We don't need a full cabinet, a 1/4 cab would suffice (or even really 2U - 4U).

Can anyone recommend a company that has space in that facility that is willing to sell this small of an amount?

Colo In Switch And Data Or Telehouse NYC

Mar 22, 2007

Here's my plan: colo servers for VoIP in either Switch and Data NYC or Telehouse NYC (or possibly Equinix Newark NJ). Purchase bandwidth from InvisibleHand.net, who can give me a direct connection of IP bandwidth from DTAG DeutscheTelecom

People say DTAG has awesome bandwidth, and I know I can get it pretty cheap from InvisibleHand.

Any comments on this plan? Which of the 3 locations is best for the price? I don't want to buy from a reseller (since they may go under). I want my colo direct from whoever owns it like Switch and Data.

SNMP Monitoring Software For Switch Ports In Your Data Center

Jan 8, 2008

We currently have a OK solution to monitor and graph our client bandwidth at the switch port. It's a great product, but we have been expanding quickly and we are looking for a solution that is a bit more scalable and user friendly. Any recommendations?

Basically we want software to do the following:Monitor/log bandwidth in/out
Graph data in some way shape or form
Provide a web interface for users to login and view bandwidth usage
Scalable and cost effective
Easy to use
Windows or Linux

If you don't feel comfortable divulging what you use, just PM me. Also, we are already aware of MRTG.

Comparing VPS Vs Dedi Plan...

Sep 6, 2008

I am trying to make a decision on switching from my current VPS hosting to a dedicated solution. If I rent the server in the next 24 hours from Theplanet, I can get a Celeron 2.0+ with 1GB of ram and an 80GB hd for $74/month (plus $25 setup). $15/month of that is for doubling the ram to 512MB, so I could get the same without that for $59/month.

Comparisons:
VPS: 2 1.6Mhz Dual-Core AMD Opteron Processor 2210 HE's, I don't know how many people share that
Dedi: Celeron 2.0, all mine. (and yes, I know that is potentially a bit of a downgrade)

VPS: 512MB ram and 1024MB swap
Dedi: 1024MB ram (guessing I set my own swap size?)

VPS: 25GB allocated space
Dedi: 80GB hd

VPS: 1.5Mbps connection
Dedi: 10Mbps connection

VPS: CP+ control panel
Dedi: None included (could install Webmin myself, which is free, never used it before though)

VPS: Their DNS servers
Dedi: Need to use my own

So basically the parts I don't know the difference between would be the processor, the control panel, and what the performance impact on running primary and secondary DNS servers on the same box as the webserver. Anyone have any feedback on those points?

Separate question... assuming I go for it, what would be the deciding factors on OS, if the choices were CentOS 4.x, CentOS 5.x, FreeBSD 6.3, or FreeBSD 7.0?

Reliable Way Of Comparing Provider's Speed

Oct 27, 2009

What's a reliable method of comparing the network speed between two providers? They often put up a 50MB or 100MB file to download, but I'm not certain how to go about testing their bandwidth.

I can't just download the file from my home connection -- my link is probably capped at 10 Mbps. Is there an external service that I can use?

Comparing High-end Shared 2 VP 2 Low Dedicated

Jul 9, 2008

As a non-tech but looong term sufferer in the Hosting biz both as a consumer and VERY briefly a supplier ( strictly for masochists IMHO ), over the years I found it was only specific individuals - not the Hosting Company that was the key point.

Good support people are really needed more today than ever before. It is sooo complex - as follows:

We are looking at leaving our unsupported VERY small Dedicated Server after two years of frustration trying to get a secure, reliable system going without success. A mixed bag of problems: Us being non-geeks, OS problems, Server problems.

We are looking at going back to a VPS in the light of amazing claims being made for them today.

A fraction of the cost of Dedicated and yet *claims* of astounding capability. CLAIMS...

That's why I'm here today with you. I need help sorting the facts out. Can a VPS that : is "burstable" for RAM and with amazing pipe access and volume allowance and the new concept of "sorta like load balancing" sharing workload over possibly hundreds of Servers in a giant cluster" actually be real?

If this is true it would be Server heaven for me as the Provider has to do all the Geek-stuff!

Internap / More Peering Better

Jan 26, 2008

My colo is charging about $80/Mbit, they use InterNAP. Is that reasonable? This is in west coast/california.

That brings me to my other question, how do you know whats a good network? How is hurricane electric compared to InterNAP?

fixedorbit.com shows HE on the top 10 list and shows a lot of peering. I don't see InterNAP on that list at all! Does that mean thats it not as good?

The more peering, the better? (I guess we assume that the network provider isn't over selling and isn't cramming a lot of customers into a single port etc...)

40mbps, 20A, 42U rack.

Only info I've seen is from 2003 where people were saying $200/mbps. Obviously prices have come WAY down. I've seen people on here reselling internap bandwidth for $12/mbps, but they might have bought a huge commit.

How Good Is Internap Bandwidth

Mar 24, 2008

We have a choice of a Level3/Time Warner mix or pure Internap. Obviously the Internap bandwidth is a bit more expensive, but since this customers website serves an international community we are thinking that Internap bandwidth would be well worth the cost.

What are the advantages of using Internap? How is the network performance? We've setup a machine on the Internap network and have begun running tests, but I would like to hear from people who have direct experience with Internap bandwidth.

InterNap Rack Cost

Jan 24, 2007

After running 6 or so dedicated servers purchased thru several different resellers, my company decided to get a rack at the Chicago InterNap DC.

The quote we got was $3,400 per month inclusive of cabinet, Usage based 10/100, and Cross connects.

Have a couple questions.

A) Is that price in the ballpark of where it should be?

and

B) Our quote states Usage based 100mb Ethernet (10MBps Min). Tier2 at $150 month and $1,400 for the 10.00 Mbps Base. Being new to this, I have no idea exactly how much bandwidth we can use before the "usage" fees kick in.

How does this work?

Does OER = Less Internap BW And Less Route Science & FCP

Aug 31, 2007

As we are finishing our migration plans to Cisco OER. I would like to get everyone's thoughts on the low latency "brand name" internap bandwidth.

Do you think that the high priced brandname is going to continue with Cisco finally releasing OER to what a large number of datacenters use as their primary core switch? In my eyes the FCP and the Avaya/RouteScience platform just lost a lot of value. The OER product looks very complete and in testing works excellent, the final verdict will be in what the platform actually does.

If you are wondering Cisco OER information can be found here [url]

Internap FCP - How Much Does It Really Improve Network Performace

I am looking for reviews from others who have experience with the Internap FCP and it's performance. How does it compare to a network using BGP4? I know that FCP uses more intelligent routing than BGP, but how big of an improvement does it make?
