Upgrading Kernel On Dedicated Server (server.lu)
Apr 6, 2009
Is it possible to upgrade a kernel on a dedicated server? I have a dedicated at Server.lu.
I opened a ticket with them, it was open for about a month with no reply.
How can I tell if GRUB or LILO is on the server somewhere?

Site is currently running on a single code single cpu p4 server. Am thinking of upgrading to a quad core Xeon server.
My site is pretty dynamic with lots of hits to php / mysql, and has trouble keeping up with the requests sometimes. Would a quadcore Xeon significantly help?
Server Software:
Windows 2003 Server
php 5.2.6
apache 2
mysql 4.1
Current Setup:
P4 2.8 single core/cpu.
Proposed setup
Xeon 3210 quadcore
I guess my confusion lies in the following:
1. Can win2003 server make use of the quadcores?
2. Does php / apache / mysql make use of the quadcores?
3. Will i see a significant increase in the amount of pages i can serve?

I have a collocated server which I'd like to do some upgrades to. I'm having it shipped back to me so that I can do the upgrades myself. However, since I use this as my primary email server, I need help setting something up so I have no email downtime.
I have a cheap shared hosting account with DreamHost so one idea I have is to point the domain to their servers and handle things through there for a bit. This seems like the "brute force" way to do it though since I have to wait for DNS propagation and what not. Another idea was to use a service like DynDNS' MailHop BackupMX which does storage and forwarding. However, this service is kind of expensive ($30) considering I'm only going to use it a week or so.

I have a Win2003 dedicated server (with The Planet) that i use to host a large IPB forum site.
I got it about 3yrs ago and as I was a complete newbie to server management I got Plesk CP installed so that it would take care of all the SQL, PHP and mail installation and setup in one easy go.
I've since found Plesk for Windows to be a complete waste of space.. but it's still on there and has never been upgraded. I don't actually use it as a CP.
Similarly PHP and mySQL have never been upgraded.
Now I've got to the stage where, to upgrade the IPB forum software, I need to upgrade PHP and mySQL.. but looking at the installation, they seem to be embedded in the Plesk installation. They're inside the SWSoft/Plesk/ folders and none of the ini or config files appear to be in the places you'd expect them to be.
My question -
Would these upgrades be simple?? A case of just running an update package?? Or is the fact that PHP/mySQL are embedded in Plesk mean that it'll all mess up?
I'm worried that a failed upgrade will knacker the forum, which is why I've delayed for so long.

We cannot figure out why our dedicated server will not boot to the correct kernel. I've removed all other options from grub.conf but it's still booting to the default CentOS setup.
grub.conf:
Code:

I got this weird issue with a server, I have even contacted some server management companies as I ran out of ideas and ran out of things to try and fix it.
Lemme explain.
The server is a core2quad q6600, with 8gb ram. 2 velociraptor 300gb on raid1.
When I set the server up I had to wait on cpanel so I first went in and compiled a grsec kernel, 2.6.24.3 to be exact. Then I installed cpanel and everything else, have done the same exact procedures with countless other servers before, nothing special.
Have had this server around 10 months. It will only run right in the 2.6.24.3-grsec kernel. When you boot another kernel it will first boot very very slow, then when the server comes up everything is very very slow. Then the load will go up to like 100 with nothing special going on in the server. It;s like its loaded down like that just with basic startup functions. You will see things like service_start processes long after startup. Cpanel takes forever to start up if it does. The server is extremely slow and unusable, you are lucky if you can edit grub.conf real quick and set the default kernel back.
It does this on every kernel...Besides the 2.6.24.3-grsec which in that case it boots right up fine and dandy. It acts like a regular server then, performs good.
So any other kernel besides the 2.6.24.3-grsec simply wont work on it. There are no logs in messages, nothing like that. I looked into things that may have been built only for the 2.6.24.3-grsec kernel but couldn't really find anything that should have made such an impact.

I have a cpanel server which goes down with a kernel panic.
In the messages files, i could find the below lines.
The kernel in the server is 2.6.9-55.0.12.ELsmp #1 SMP
h/w is 4 cpu Dual Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 265
Is this a kernel bug?
If yes , how can i solve it?

So it seems like httpd crashed my server? I checked the Apache error_log and noticed lines like these:
Code:
*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0x08872c98 ***
[Fri Mar 23 15:57:03 2007] [error] [client x.x.x.x] Premature end of script headers: /home/user/public_html/forum/index.php
[Fri Mar 23 15:57:03 2007] [error] [client x.x.x.x] File does not exist: /home/user/public_html/500.shtml
When I look at the whole error_log it seems like such errors appear frequently and for different websites and PHP applications. This isn't the only glibc error, there's also stuff like "*** glibc detected *** corrupted double-linked list: 0x088e0bb8 ***". I have recently installed eAccelerator and searched the web: I'm not the only one who has such problems with eAccelerator. Do you think these glibc errors may have caused the server to crash?
Also, lately I noticed a lot of lines like these in the /var/log/messages file:
Code:
Mar 23 15:47:45 alpha kernel: post_create: setxattr failed, rc=122 (dev=sda7 ino=4318565)
and
Code:
Mar 23 15:50:56 alpha ntpd[2958]: sendto(66.111.46.200): Operation not permitted
I've done some Google'ing on the first error and it seems like someone with the same error got it fixed by running a filesystem check... By the way /dev/sda7 is my /home directory. But in order to run a filesystem check I need to disable all services and unmount /home? That's kind of a pain in the ***... In general, how long do you think it takes to run a filesystem check? Here's information about my /home partition:
Code:
/dev/sda7 198G 71G 118G 38% /home

I have a server running Fedora 4 and WHM/cPanel. I would like to upgrade the linux kernel to the latest version, so mosey in via SSH and type "yum -y upgrade". It downloads a few things and tells me everything is hunky dory.
Now, the version it says it is currently running is: 2.6.17-1.2142_FC4 #1 Tue Jul 11 22:41:14 EDT 2006
Is that the really the newest version available? Maybe I'm confused as to how this works, but if I go to kernel.org it tells me the most recent stable version of the kernel is 2.6.24.3. Is this because I am running FC4?

I have a company offering me the follow:
Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor
1 GB RAM
250 GB Hard Drive
500 GB Bandwidth
5 Usable IPs
Free Cpanel
The issue here is that they're not real dedicated servers, they're Openvz Dedicated Kernel with Quad Core CPU. The question I have is does anyone have any experience with openvz servers and how does the performance add up compare to dedicated servers? The hosting company says they do it this way because they get cpanel licenses cheap so can give it away for free. Any thoughts?

I have Plesk 11.5 (service provider mode) on a Windows 2008 server IIS7.Most of my sites are developed in .asp and therefore i use a custom 500-100.asp error page that check s the IP of the visitor then displays either a friendly error, or if its my IP a full error of what has happened (it also emails me the error). This allows me to debug pages easily whilst developing and to keep an eye on anyone trying SQL Injection hacks on my sites (as the error and email also have session variables and IP address).I dont have root access to the server as it is a Webfusion dedicated server.I have following the Plesk documentation -
1) Switch on custom errors for the subscription
2) Look in virtual directories and navigate to error documents
3) Find the error in question (500:100) and change it to point at either a file or URL
FILE - I had the data centre add in the 500-100.asp error page in to the virtual template so that my page is available in the list of virtual files - this didn't work but that maybe because its not a static page??
URL - when i add the path it says its incorrect, if i add a fully qualified address, it accepts it but it doesn't work.give me a specific example of the URL that can be entered relative to the root as the format in the documentation isn't accepted. The last step is to restart IIS which is also an issue as i cant seem to do this from the Plesk panel..It is as if it isn't catching the 500:100 error, and only catching the general 500 error??

I am going to be buying a dedicated server from kimsufi Most likely the 2XL Package.
My streamers will be using my server aswell, On weekends we will be running 3-4 streams at a time, weekdays 1-2 at a time.
Spreading all the streams out, at anyone time we will have 300 viewers.
I need to know your advice on this before i go spending money.
How do i convert my dedi into a flash media server, i need red5 or something, thats all i know so far. My streamers wil be streaming to server with FME, And i also want it coded so that my streams can only be embedded on my site.
Basically i dont have a clue where to start, how long would it take me to set up etc....
In addition, what kind of server do i need, windows / linux / traffic / burstable / standard etc..

I am currently using a shared hosting but due to increasing traffic and server load my existing host is not able to provide reliable services and I am planning to upgrade my hosting service.
While I was searching for Dedicated Servers, I learnt about Virtual Dedicated Servers but I am not very sure about their reliability? Are Virtual Dedicated Servers useful? My website current serves over 2500-3000 visitors a day resulting in 30,000 pageviews and I am expecting the traffic to grow by atleast 2 folds in the next few months as I start some PPC campaigns and Email Marketing for my website. Can a Virtual Dedicated Server cater such needs assuming my website to be more of less dynamic website written in php?

I'd like to know, how do you backup a cPanel dedicated server to a remote FTP server? WHM's backup only allows you to backup the client's accounts, but not the cPanel settings, or the stuff in /etc?

I'm a a JAVA software developer and it happens that I need to configure a dedicated server running Win 2003.
It's already up and running with static IP address, however hosting offers a "Static IP Address", which doesn't really make sense, cause I already have one?
Other thing is domain name. Current domain name is registered with a different company and we don't really want to transfer it from that company. Can I get away with importing a domain name and changing MX records in the domain control panel?
Last thing is an email server. What do I need to set up an Email Server? I have a domain name with few POP3 email addresses. I thought about using hMail server for windows. What else do I need to do, pay for?

My client is looking for a company that can provide managed dedicated servers for use with SQL Server 2k5 and IIS. I believe the client is looking to have everything installed for them and then be handed the keys once complete.

Whats the easiest way to create a private server within a dedicated server running cpanel/WHM/Fantastico?
I need to allow this 'virtual server', to host up to 10 domains, and for them to use their own nameservers, not the ones used on my dedicated server.
I have 2 IPs to spare, but I have no idea on how to do this.
Any help is much appreciated, or if you can guide me on where to get info on this.
i need this new reseller NOT to be identified with my own server (IPs)

We have 2 Servers:
Server A - this is a VPS
All webfiles/domains/dns/nameservers are confuigured on this server
Server B - this is a dedicated server
Only Databases are setup on this server.
Now we have planned to move from Server A to Server B to avoid/minimize server loads caused on Server A due to heavy traffic.
How should we begin ?
How can we minimize the downtime in migration. ?
How can we transfer our awstats logs from last 2 years to new server ?
We are mainly concerned about domains/dns setup where we have least knowledge these are only on Server A. We are also using custom nameservers and Servint nameservers for some domains respectively.
