Media Server Running Windows Server 2003 Std: Yes Or No

Jul 10, 2007

Most people probably run Linux on their media servers, but since I don't know much about Linux and the media server we have is unmanaged, I was wondering how you guys feel about running Windows Server 2003 Std on a media server instead of Linux. We'll only be using the server to host Flash video files (.flv) and we'll be serving those vids on websites hosted on other servers, resulting in approx. 50,000-100,000 media views per day (filesizes range from approx. 5MB to 10MB). We don't want to run Windows Media Services, just a Web server (IIS6) and have the Flash video players on the external websites take care of the streaming/downloading part.

Mirror A Site Running Server 2003 Web Services

Dec 19, 2008

Mirror a site running server 2003 web services

I'm a network admin at a university and one of the departments is hosting their site on their own personal server running Server 2003 and Windows Web services. They've been asking me how would they go about mirroring their site in the event of a power loss intentional or otherwise. There are times during holiday periods where building maintenance will shut off power but they still want students to be able to get to their site. So they want to set up a mirror on another server in an office offsite.

I've done some research on the subject but I haven't been able to find anything dealing with mirroring Microsoft hosted sites.

Windows Media Server

my Hosting service (Hostway) offered Windows Media Server at the time. I wanted visitors to have the ability to quickly stream .wma's, so I went for the cost.

now...I'm unemployed; & money is real, I was thinking of dropping Hostway...going over to GoDaddy; & switching my means of musical delivery to .mp3's.

1) How much slower is mp3 streaming from a conventional server than .wma from a dedicated server?

2) Is there a way to speed it (mp3) up (save decreasing file size)?

3) Will .wma's stream without the dedicated server; & if is that implemented?

I really need to save money in this economy...but I don't want my listeners to suffer. Is that possible?

Running MS SQL / Coldfusion On IIS / Windows 2003

Jun 25, 2009

We currently have a dedicated development server with our company's host (not hostgator) in which we are charged a decent amount to have on a yearly basis. I was looking to cut down costs and wanted to see if it would be feasible to have a windows box we have in the office setup as our development server. We would install windows 2003 on it along with anything else we need. The current development server is hosted under a IIS 6 / Windows 2003 / CF 7 Environment. If it is doable, what kind of problems would we run into vs having it on a real server? It would only have at the most 3-4 connections possibly once or twice a week so speed is not a huge deal.

Also, how tedious is installing, setting up and migrating everything over for the MSSQL database going to be?

Windows Media Server & Web Server

I have a company that wants to stream some live events via Windows Media Encoder/Windows Media Player. I believe the best route is to use a WMS, stream to the WMS, then the CDN would pull from there for events. Can someone help me explain a Windows Media Server versus a web server? Can you host web sites on a WMS? Is WMS just an extension to a regular Windows 2003 server?

VMware Server Under Windows Server 2003

I yesterday installed VMware Server under Windows Server 2003 x64, Enterprise Edition, and have this morning noticed the message 'Service unavailable' when browsing to a website hosted on the server under IIS. I have briefly looked into the problem and found the DefaultAppPool stopped, but after restarting it, it resets back to the stopped state when I once again browse to a hosted website.

Does anyone have any experience of this problem and a workaround?

Windows 2008 Versus Windows 2003 Server

May 26, 2009

With Windows 2003 server, there are comprehensive lists of what you need to do to secure the server before use. For Windows 2008, I wonder is there such a list? Or is it true as what I heard from Microsoft that it is already secured out of the box?

Anyone has any resources on the hardening or preparation of 2008 for server hosting uses?

We want to be resolved to an external IP address (for web hosting), let's say The problem is, the two domain controllers keep registering with their internal IP addresses .111 and .112, so the DNS round-robins between and the two internal servers, which aren't web servers.

The past week I've been trying to answer the hardest question. I'm an expert windows user and a Novice Linux user.

I have a server built and ready for an operating system, this will be a development server for database and web development. It will also likely turn into an encrypted file server as well.

I do not plan on doing much else other then that.

Is it worth it to struggle through and learn the Linux command line or should I go for Windows Server something I am more familiar with?

I've considered VMware although I have "Fake Raid" and ESXi does not see my Raid-1 setup.

Windows Server 2003 IIS Issues

Oct 21, 2008

I have a windows server 2003 server with IIS 6 installed on it. My site runs fine, then all of a sudden becomes VERY slow.

I asked server hosts to take a look at it, and they noticed an IP that is has attempted to connect on port 80 432 times in a few seconds, causing the site to slow down.

Is there any software i can use to try and combat this spam/abuse? I have a trend micro anti-virus and firewall installed on the server. I have blocked that IP, but there is nothing stopping that from changing.

Also, are there any free/cheap server monitoring tools for the server that i can monitor the server remotely with?

The server has SNMP installed and configured according to my server hosts... watever that is.
