Change Host, Change Domain And Getting Search Engines Up To Speed
Has anyone helped clients transition from one domain to another? Maybe dissolving a partnership or renaming their company... so a new domain name has been registered and a new website created.
2 Issues:
#1 Using .htaccess 301 redirect
We used the following command line in their old website's htaccess file
Redirect 301 / [url]
The goal was to get people try to visit any page of their old website (i.e. OldWebsite.com/contact.html) redirected to their new website (i.e. NewWebsite.com/contact.html). Isn't that supposed to change the address bar's URL, too? For some reason, I visit their old site and I seem to be redirected to their new website but the address bar still has their old domain name? Something is going on???
#2 Having their new company name for 2 years now. People can enter her new company name in Google, MSN or Yahoo. Her new company name appears in the search results but has the old domain name associated with it. We are trying to get rid of any reference to that old domain name? What's the easiest way to do this? So what people see in search engines is:

What steps did I miss in this transition?
What steps do I have to take on their old website/old web server to control it's appearance on search engines and make sure people get to the new website?

Search Engines Continue To Pickup Domain Used For Forwarding
We have a bunch of domains we use to forward into various locations on our site, so for instance: [url] would forward to [url]. I am currently running a Windows 2k3 Server with IIS6. The way I achieve these forwards is to set up another site, put the forwarding domain in the host header, then have it forward out to my desired directory. However, now Google has been picking up my forwarding domains with their robots, and getting addresses like [url], which does not exist, just [url]does, so people are getting returned a lot of 404 errors. How can I stop this? Am I setting up the domain forwarding wrong?

Search Engines And Pinging
I have a hardware firewall on my server that does not allow pinging or trace routes from anyone outside the vpn. So, pinging my server or a website on it will return a "request time out" for each try even though the websites come up fine and connectivity is fine. I'm told this is for enhanced security but it's also my understanding that search engines and some programs will ping a site before attempting to crawl it or index a page on it. I guess this saves time and bandwidth for the search engine bot. Is this true? and is there a security risk for opening my firewall to allow pinging?

Shared Hosting And Search Engines
I have heard that using shared hosting accounts is risky for search engine rankings because if one site on the server breaks the rules then the whole server can be penalized. Is there a cheap type of hosting package that provides the same functionality and does not share the same IP with hundreds of other sites?

Host Will Only Update Domain Name Server (DNS) In Batches, Takes Several Hours For A DNS Change, Normal?
Host will only update DNS in batches, takes several hours for a DNS change, is that normal? Well today my mail stopped working and it turns out the A record for mail was deleted. How it got deleted I don't know. I called my host and after speaking to 2 techs, they said that have added my request to a batch, and that would update in a few hours. I said to him, batch? What can't you do it instantly? He said thats not the way their DNS works and any DNS change would affect thousands of other sites they are hosting. Does anyone know what kind of dns system these people could possibly have where they can not reload a single zone? And by affected, I think he means the sites will go down for a minute or so, while it relaods every zone. Is this really the case, or are these people just idiots?

Hostzio is down still, so I'm planning on moving my websites to yet another server/reselling account. I was wondering if my account with Hostzio is still active, if I can transfer the domains to another server without any problems? There would be about 10 domains I'd have to transfer from my old account to the new one.

Host Name Change
I want to change my servers host name to my new domain. Currently the server is server1.gameserved.com and I want to change it to server1.abihp.ca Reasons for this is I am expanding into game serving and I want the gameserved domain on the windows servers. Can I just change this in my settings in WHM or do I need to consider some other things in doing this? Will this cause server complications or issues?

Correct Way To Change A Site's Domain Name
I'm working on a young site that will be changing its focus and its domain name to reflect the new focus. What is the correct way to change the domain name? In the past, I've simply created a new site in WHM/cPanel under the new domain name and copied the old site (and database) over, which was a great deal of work. Is there another way to do it that is less time consuming - without having to copy files? Are you not able to just change the domain name setting in WHM without having to copy the entire site over to a new directory on the server?

i have a dedicated server with 5 usable IP's in range xxx.242 to xxx.246 xx.xxx.120.242 <-- main shared IP xx.xxx.120.243 xx.xxx.120.244 <-- in use by my nameservers xx.xxx.120.245 <-- in use by my nameservers xx.xxx.120.246 When i select in WHM "Change Site's IP Address " and the account i want to change it shows me a drop down menu with the ip's of the nameservers AND the xx.xxx.120.243 If i select that one the domain in the account shows the apache default page only inmediately. I don't know why the xx.xxx.120.246 ip doesn't show or why the nameserver ip's appear because they are in use. Do i need to wait for propagation or is this an error?

New Domain - Can't Change DNS, Can't Use Nameservers,
I'm stuck. First let me explain how my current sites are setup. I have all of my personal domains through GoDaddy at the moment. I set each domain to point to GoDaddys default hosting nameservers. Then I create DNS A Records for my domain pointing to the IP of my webserver. That works. I recently purchased a domain name from a backordering service. This domain is with a different registrar. They do not offer any kind of managed DNS and will not create A records for me. My server is not setup as a nameserver so I can't do either. I also can't transfer the domain over to GoDaddy because of ICANNs two month rule. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? Is there a service out there where I can point to their nameservers and they will send traffic to my servers IP? I'm not as sharp on this topic as I probably should be

I then carried out a HOME FOLDER backup of my old host through CPANEL and (I think this is where I went wrong) reinstalled that backup on my new host. Primary Domain Change For WHM Account
I have a hostee who as part of an out-of-court settlement, needs to change the primary domain they host on. The domain they're switching to is already a parked domain on their account. At first blush, it seems like it would be pretty easy, but now I'm concerned about their email. Both of the principals of the company use Horde extensively for webmail, and as such I have files on the server for their email accounts. What I was thinking about doing is this: 1. Stop parking the "new" domain on the account. 2. Change the account from using the "old" domain in WHM to the "new" domain by modifying the account in WHM. 3. Forwarding email sent to user@old.domain to user@new.domain, in CPanel. 4. Assorted changes on website to account for the new domain - published email addresses, new SSL cert, things like that. My concern is in how to move the mail files, currently set up to be for user@old.domain, to be readable by Horde as user@new.domain, so it's seamless to the users. We will be keeping the old domain under our control, but not using it to point to the site any more; I just don't want to have to tell them "OK, to get your old email, you have to check this address, and to get new email, you have to check this one." Would my plan above actually accomplish that? Is there a better way within a WHM/CPanel framework to accomplish what I need without losing email or access to it? What am I missing?

Client Getting 403 Page After Host Change
I checked the page on megaproxy and everything is fine, I checked it at my home, work, my brother checked it out of state. BUT. At my client's house and also at my client's friend's house.... they are still getting a 403 page. We moved the site to the new host yesterday around 2:00pm yesterday it is 10:27am And all my stuff seems to be updated... Is this an ISP issue? is there anyway I can force a domain to clear cache? is this the problem?

New Host Search
I'm sure you hear this often, but I'm on the search for a new hosting company. Earlier this year my products site switched to a db driven website with a forum. When I made the site change I had to change my hosting company I had for 3 years. Under suggestion for the webmaster I switched to midphase. When I did things started out good. Than came the down time. Each time they said I had to may users on the db. I started out at $10 a month. After several plan upgrades I'm at a $80 a month vps. I would be ok with the $80, but more times than not the site is sluggish even when the resources are not 1/3 of their capacities. After reading some of the threads on this site it seems a vps is not that good? The idea behind the vps sounded good to me. But I'm wondering if I should go back to a shared host. On a good day there may be about 30 people on the forum and about 30 people surfing the products.

In Search For Host With Latest PHP/mySQL Versions.
I'm desperately trying to find a hosting service that offers Linux hosting with latest versions of php (5.2.x), mySQL (5.1) and maybe CVS or SVN? Space or bandwidth are not an issue (500mb space will be more than I'll ever need) This will mainly will be a development/testing place. I really need a host that actually updates to latest versions of php/mysql/apache. (not the next day the upgrade is out but some time soon at least >_<) Things like CVS / SVN, SSH access and access to change your own php.ini settings are more than welcome but I could live without.

Do You Allow IP Change
A client of mine just recently asked for a new IP. His subscription near to expiry date. He considering to renew but only will renew if I can give him a new IP. Not to buy another but instead a new IP to replace the old one. If it helps, he use the vps of his to run proxy, a socks proxy perhaps. I am familiar with proxies and have quite an experienced running several group of successful proxies thus asking for an IP probably means his old IP is more than 50% blocked. What do you think? Should I just change his IP?

One of my clients are wanting to use a 3rd party spam screening service, which is supposed to only require a change of their MX entry, but it's not working for me. Why I Cant Change Nameservers
well i have this whm box. I added a pair of new nameservers. and then tried to delete the old nameservers . Removing Nameserver Ip 11.11.112.11 The ip 11.11.112.11 is now ready for re-use as a different nameserver then i click on nameservers and i see old ones again :/ what i done was change it in /etc/nameserverips again when i click on whm / Nameserver IPs I see old nameservers!

IP Change / DNS
We are moving to a new rack at our DC. Now the IP addresses will change. BUT.. we have a mailserver running, and all users are pointed at the current name "mailserver.domain.com" which itself is pointing to the old IP. So far so good... BUT we need to move that server to the new rack, and so we need to change the IP. But if we change the IP in the DNS, it will take till 24 hours for all the providers to propogate the new IP. For those users, the mailserver will be offline. How can we fix that properly? So that no-one has any serious downtime? Anyone got a clue on how to do so?

Cannot Change Permissions
I'm using wsftp checking permissions in domain.net in this directory: /public_html/mambots/content/plugin_jw_sig through wsftp i saw chmod 755 but when i try to delete this directory appears with 550 and i can't delete it So i used File Manager tool in Cpanel, selected directory to erase it, seems like was done, but when i refresh page the directory it's still there, so i try to change permissions because apparently it has 755 but i can't do anything with it, so when i click button to change permission i got an error message [a fatal error or timeout occurred while processing this directive] Then i go trough wsftp to check again and this directory it's still there

Change From Share To VPS
I am teetering on the edge of over using my shared account and have decided it is time to move on to a VPS. This has been a long time coming, but the economy has held me back and now I am running out of options. I have looked at several hosts and just wanted some recommendations. Since this is the first time to run a VPS, I assume a managed VPS is better for me. I am currently looking at KnownHost.com and VPS.net since they are both well reviewed here. I would just like recommendation on what to consider based on my wants. I do not need much horse power behind the server as I have just pushed passed 20meg of ram at my current host; about max for them. I need a LAMP setup (PHP5, MySQL 5) for 4-5 sites of which only two get any real traffic, the others are just family blogs.
