Correct Way To Change A Site's Domain Name
I'm working on a young site that will be changing its focus and its domain name to reflect the new focus. What is the correct way to change the domain name? In the past, I've simply created a new site in WHM/cPanel under the new domain name and copied the old site (and database) over, which was a great deal of work. Is there another way to do it that is less time consuming - without having to copy files? Are you not able to just change the domain name setting in WHM without having to copy the entire site over to a new directory on the server?

Domain Flagged For Malware; How To Correct Blacklist
A Wordpress install on one of my domains was compromised a few months ago, and there was a 4-hour window in which the site contained an iframe injection that lead to a malware site. The problem was corrected, and Google stopped flagging the site as malicious within a few hours after the fix. However, every once in a while I still hear of people having problems accessing the site, all of them I think from within large corporate networks. Are there a few common list providers that these corporate networks are likely to be subscribing to? Is there a way I can submit the domain for reevaluation? If not, how long would you think a domain would have to be clean in order to repair its reputation on these lists?

Has anyone helped clients transition from one domain to another? Maybe dissolving a partnership or renaming their company... so a new domain name has been registered and a new website created. 2 Issues: #1 Using .htaccess 301 redirect We used the following command line in their old website's htaccess file Redirect 301 / [url] The goal was to get people try to visit any page of their old website (i.e. OldWebsite.com/contact.html) redirected to their new website (i.e. NewWebsite.com/contact.html). Isn't that supposed to change the address bar's URL, too? For some reason, I visit their old site and I seem to be redirected to their new website but the address bar still has their old domain name? Something is going on??? #2 Having their new company name for 2 years now. People can enter her new company name in Google, MSN or Yahoo. Her new company name appears in the search results but has the old domain name associated with it. We are trying to get rid of any reference to that old domain name? What's the easiest way to do this? So what people see in search engines is: New Company Short Meta Description www.OldDomain.com What steps did I miss in this transition? What steps do I have to take on their old website/old web server to control it's appearance on search engines and make sure people get to the new website?

Can Other Hosted Sites Be Access Through Your Domain/subdomain
I'm using a shared host that provides good service and support, but there's one major issue I discovered recently: Other sites hosted on their server are accessible through my domains and subdomain. For example: Account2 on their server can be accessed through: [url] [url] Host says: "Because everything is Name-based, apache decides what directory is going to be used based upon the name that is provided. However, because the username is valid, it treats it as a vaild URL and redirects it to your site. There is no security issue, as this is just the way apache’s configuration works." Is it really normal? Does the same happen on all apache servers? I think SE's would treat the other pages as mine, no?

i have a dedicated server with 5 usable IP's in range xxx.242 to xxx.246 xx.xxx.120.242 <-- main shared IP xx.xxx.120.243 xx.xxx.120.244 <-- in use by my nameservers xx.xxx.120.245 <-- in use by my nameservers xx.xxx.120.246 When i select in WHM "Change Site's IP Address " and the account i want to change it shows me a drop down menu with the ip's of the nameservers AND the xx.xxx.120.243 If i select that one the domain in the account shows the apache default page only inmediately. I don't know why the xx.xxx.120.246 ip doesn't show or why the nameserver ip's appear because they are in use. Do i need to wait for propagation or is this an error?

New Domain - Can't Change DNS, Can't Use Nameservers,
I'm stuck. First let me explain how my current sites are setup. I have all of my personal domains through GoDaddy at the moment. I set each domain to point to GoDaddys default hosting nameservers. Then I create DNS A Records for my domain pointing to the IP of my webserver. That works. I recently purchased a domain name from a backordering service. This domain is with a different registrar. They do not offer any kind of managed DNS and will not create A records for me. My server is not setup as a nameserver so I can't do either. I also can't transfer the domain over to GoDaddy because of ICANNs two month rule. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? Is there a service out there where I can point to their nameservers and they will send traffic to my servers IP? I'm not as sharp on this topic as I probably should be

Primary Domain Change For WHM Account
I have a hostee who as part of an out-of-court settlement, needs to change the primary domain they host on. The domain they're switching to is already a parked domain on their account. At first blush, it seems like it would be pretty easy, but now I'm concerned about their email. Both of the principals of the company use Horde extensively for webmail, and as such I have files on the server for their email accounts. What I was thinking about doing is this: 1. Stop parking the "new" domain on the account. 2. Change the account from using the "old" domain in WHM to the "new" domain by modifying the account in WHM. 3. Forwarding email sent to user@old.domain to user@new.domain, in CPanel. 4. Assorted changes on website to account for the new domain - published email addresses, new SSL cert, things like that. My concern is in how to move the mail files, currently set up to be for user@old.domain, to be readable by Horde as user@new.domain, so it's seamless to the users. We will be keeping the old domain under our control, but not using it to point to the site any more; I just don't want to have to tell them "OK, to get your old email, you have to check this address, and to get new email, you have to check this one." Would my plan above actually accomplish that? Is there a better way within a WHM/CPanel framework to accomplish what I need without losing email or access to it? What am I missing?

Host will only update DNS in batches, takes several hours for a DNS change, is that normal? Well today my mail stopped working and it turns out the A record for mail was deleted. How it got deleted I don't know. I called my host and after speaking to 2 techs, they said that have added my request to a batch, and that would update in a few hours. I said to him, batch? What can't you do it instantly? He said thats not the way their DNS works and any DNS change would affect thousands of other sites they are hosting. Does anyone know what kind of dns system these people could possibly have where they can not reload a single zone? And by affected, I think he means the sites will go down for a minute or so, while it relaods every zone. Is this really the case, or are these people just idiots?

Correct Permissions To Use
I am in the process of setting up my server and have come to the stage where I am uploading my actual website scripts and files. I am a little confused however as to what permissions and file/directory ownership my website files should be set to. My web root is set to 755 (rwx/r-x/r-x) with Owner as root, and Group as root. All files within the web root are set to 744 (rwx/r--/r--) with the owner and group the same as the web root. The permissions set allow php scripts to function but I am not sure if the group should be set to root on all these files, is this correct? My site users have no ftp access if that makes any difference to ownership.

How Can I Correct This Error
I got this error from dns report. FAIL Open DNS servers ERROR: One or more of your nameservers reports that it is an open DNS server. This usually means that anyone in the world can query it for domains it is not authoritative for (it is possible that the DNS server advertises that it does recursive lookups when it does not, but that shouldn't happen). This can cause an excessive load on your DNS server. Also, it is strongly discouraged to have a DNS server be both authoritative for your domain and be recursive (even if it is not open), due to the potential for cache poisoning (with no recursion, there is no cache, and it is impossible to poison it). let's say the package was 512mb ram guaranteed and burstable, how would I check if I was given the correct guaranteed RAM? i have this 2 vps with the ff 1GB/2GB burst and 512mb/2gb burst I'm asking because in HyperVM, I can see the max ram for the 2 packages as 2GB. how to check the guaranteed ram? Also both of these are quad core but the other is showing 2.7Ghz per cpu while the other it's 0.5GHz.

VPS With 20 IP's And Correct PTR Records
DigBuddy is an email deliverability and MX monitoring service. Customers sign up and input all of the email addresses at their domain and our monitoring system will check to make sure that these email addresses are able to receive email by logging in and attempting to send an email without actually sending one. It also checks the DNS, SPF records and a bunch of other stuff so our clients can be assured that they are able to send and receive email to a variety of networks without issue. We need to set up monitoring servers on a number of networks across a number of countries that can be used to send and receive email. Basically all we need is a VPS with 512mb of ram and 19 IP's. It also must have an unblocked SMTP port 25 and the IP's must have a neutral or better senderbase score. We also need to make sure that the IP's have proper forward and reverse DNS entries.

I have a client who will be pointing their domain to my reseller server. I have already setup the account on my server and made the appropriate DNS changes with their domain registrar - so the domain should be pointing to my server soon. However, what is the normal procedure for migrating email accounts, without loosing mail? When should they change email account settings? I'm having the oddest issue. For some reason, some of the websites on my server load fine, and some take a really long time to load (2 minutes). Now, the server load is fine, and the size of the sites aren't the issue either. I've restarted Apache and a couple more services, and still the same sites seem to load very slow. I have a vps with dedicated ip's for my domain names. I read that in order for mails coming from my server not be picked up as spam, i need to add reverse ip entries. Now i have already added the glue nameserver records on my godaddy control panel, ns1.mydomain.com -> 10.20.30.40 ns2.mydomain.com -> 10.20.30.41 But do i need to speak to the datacenter to add the reverse dns entries for my domain on their nameservers? What about if i host my nameservers offsite, but then have my webserver/mailserver etc inside the datacenter? Would i need to request the datacenter where the nameservers are hosted to add the reverse ip entries for the domain, and then the request the same from the datacenter for my web/mail servers to add the reverse entries? Is it really required?

We have a lot of unused domains that we'd like to setup domain parking for. To keep it simple, we'd like to just change the namesevers to ns1.domainparking.com and ns2.domainparking.com (not real nameservers!) and the domains would then automatically show a simple web page. delving into a new server, a dual opteron w/Centos. Got two questions as I think about setup. 1) 32 bit or 64bit? 2) Regarding host names and server assignemt...I can either assign it as a node to a domain hosted elsewhere in a reseller account, or I can start with a completely unused domain which is currently parked. Any preference, in an ideal world? (I have absolutely no preference, but it occurrred to me it may or may not be of consequence, perfomance & IT-wise and generally speaking .. all things being equal, of course.) Like I said, a newbie. How Many Sites Are Too Many
I have a pretty beefy VPS (1 Gb RAM, equal share Intel xeon Quad core processor), but I have no idea how many other VPS's are sharing that processor. Is there any way to know that? I'm guessing the hosting company (Future Host - very happy with them btw) isn't going to tell me. Right now my stats are pretty low, but how many individual cPanel accounts (1 site each) before it starts to bog down? I know it depends largely on the traffic, but is 20-30 low-volume sites a lot for a VPS with 1Gb ram?

One of my websites, romeo-help4u.com has this problem. When i type and the address goes to [url]it works fine. But when I go to [url]it doesn't work. Quote: Great Success ! How To Point Domain.com To Domain.net
have a such problem./ my customer have site domain.net, which is hosted on another host. now he bought domain.com and ask me, to setup this domain and point to domain.net. i'm on cpanel/whm. i ask customer on registrar page setup my nameservers, and trying to do edin dns zone..: as i know, i must do Quote: domain.com. A 62.118.***.*** or domain.com. A domain.net. or domain.com. CNAME domain.net. but unfortunately get an error: Server not found can u advice, what i'm doing wrong? btw. domain is immo.am which i'm going to point to immo.ru P.s. 1. i know, that it's possible to do via registrar, but unfortunately their registrar don't allow this 2. i suggest to do it via 301 redirect, but customer don't like it. just need to view ip of his main domain [immo.ru]

Multiple Sites
i currently have 2 webhosting providers but want to consolidate to one acct at one host with a bit better load times... 1. JaguarPc - i have two accts with them a. i have a shared acct with them currently - i believe its called the gigadeal (something like $10 a month). i have been with them since 2000, pretty decent host not too much downtime. support is "ok" when needed. currently i have 3 smallish websites hosted on this one acct, they dont get a lot of traffic. two of them are using wordpress one is just a static html site. i did a look up and found the server has about 130 sites hosetd on it. so not too bad in regards to overselling. however my big problem is the site takes about 900-1500ms to generate a page. this seems to be pretty often. again the sites dont really draw that much traffic. so thats not the problem here. b. i also have one of their freedom vps accts with upgraded ram and bandwidth. i only have one site hosted on it. this site used to get about 500K+ unique visitors a month. at its peak we were serving around 1tb bandwidth a month... i know we ran the vps hard but considering we wanted to stay under $50 it worked well. there was of course some downtime due to the massive traffic - [we serve up a popular flash cartoon website]. 2. Hostgator - babygator plan this host only serves up one wordpress site - the site isnt very well known yet, but the site is growing each month. the funny thing is that when i looked up this server there was about 830 websites hosted on it - obviously oversold and crowded. support really sucks here imho. however, the page load time is anywhere between 250ms to 500ms a lot faster than JaguarPcs. which is crazy since jag has much less sites on the server... im looking to basically consolidate the websites that are on both shared plans. my original thought was to keep them all on my shared hosting acct at jaguarpc (the one with the 3 sites). obviously i cannot add them to the vps since its pretty active. also the vps is business and the other sites are all personal. and i dont want them to mix so to speak. i am currently spending about $20 a month between the two shared host plans. im looking for some recommendations as to where to move -- where speed isnt such a big problem, and i can maintain one acct. it would be great if i could host these sites all for around $20 - hopefully without much lag. was thinking mediatemple - but after reading so many negative posts here about them - im not sure...

How Many Sites Do You Host
I did a search on the forum bu it exploded so I thought I would post the question - sorry if it's been asked. I would like to know how many sites are commonly hosted on a dedicated server.. Say - 4 gigs of RAM, and a Q9300 (for example). I know that some companies put 600 - 800 sites on the server and then customers talk about load and etc etc.. So, I just wanted to get a feel for how many sites/server..
