View 1 RepliesI have heard that using shared hosting accounts is risky for search engine rankings because if one site on the server breaks the rules then the whole server can be penalized. Is there a cheap type of hosting package that provides the same functionality and does not share the same IP with hundreds of other sites?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a hardware firewall on my server that does not allow pinging or trace routes from anyone outside the vpn.
So, pinging my server or a website on it will return a "request time out" for each try even though the websites come up fine and connectivity is fine.
I'm told this is for enhanced security but it's also my understanding that search engines and some programs will ping a site before attempting to crawl it or index a page on it. I guess this saves time and bandwidth for the search engine bot.
Is this true? and is there a security risk for opening my firewall to allow pinging?
We have a bunch of domains we use to forward into various locations on our site, so for instance: [url] would forward to [url].
I am currently running a Windows 2k3 Server with IIS6. The way I achieve these forwards is to set up another site, put the forwarding domain in the host header, then have it forward out to my desired directory. However, now Google has been picking up my forwarding domains with their robots, and getting addresses like [url],
which does not exist, just [url]does, so people are getting returned a lot of 404 errors.
How can I stop this? Am I setting up the domain forwarding wrong?
Has anyone helped clients transition from one domain to another? Maybe dissolving a partnership or renaming their company... so a new domain name has been registered and a new website created.
2 Issues:
#1 Using .htaccess 301 redirect
We used the following command line in their old website's htaccess file
Redirect 301 / [url]
The goal was to get people try to visit any page of their old website (i.e. OldWebsite.com/contact.html) redirected to their new website (i.e. NewWebsite.com/contact.html). Isn't that supposed to change the address bar's URL, too? For some reason, I visit their old site and I seem to be redirected to their new website but the address bar still has their old domain name? Something is going on???
#2 Having their new company name for 2 years now. People can enter her new company name in Google, MSN or Yahoo. Her new company name appears in the search results but has the old domain name associated with it. We are trying to get rid of any reference to that old domain name? What's the easiest way to do this? So what people see in search engines is:
New Company
Short Meta Description
www.OldDomain.com
What steps did I miss in this transition?
What steps do I have to take on their old website/old web server to control it's appearance on search engines and make sure people get to the new website?
Is there any sites which provide web hosting and search engine advertisement in one plan?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to host a torrent search engine (not a torrent site with actual torrents hosted, only a search engine).
It has to be really fast. I have a few questions?
What hosting is required for this site to be lightning fast? Most of it is due to the coding of the site but how much of it is reliant of the server? Any suggestions?
Also, is it better to start small and upgrade as more visitors come? Or is it just better to get a big server?
I run a shared hosting
OS:centos with whm/cpanel
and would like to restrict access to mysql database
example:
username:user1 created database:user1_db1,user1_db2 etc..
and can only access his own databases
so user2 can't access user1_db1.db2 etc.. and user1 can't access user2_db1,db2 etc..
Actually I make backup in 1 ftp account, also I have another ftp account what I don't use it. Do you know how to copy files directly from 1 ftp account to another one?
1 ftp account it's with bqbackup.com
1 ftp account it's with another backup provider
any of them have ssh access, so I'm looking to something like copy-at-the-fly ftp? without downloading all first to another server?
I have a few domains that I recently migrated to cPanel.
I created a 2 ftp accounts on one domain and (example bill@site.com and john@site.com), both accounts can be accesed using ftp clients, and also from Opera browser with this info:
ftp://site.com:21/ or ftp://server-ip:21/ - username bill@site.com or john@site.com and passwords.
But, this accounts can not be accessed using Internet Explorer, and my customer only uses IE , the error I recieve is something like this:
Code:
FTP Directory Error
Windows does not have access to that folder. Make sure the name of the directory was written ok and you have permission to access that directory.
Details:
The connection with the server was reset
I already tried restarting pure-ftpd, flushing the firewall rules, and there problem stills..
Im using RHES 4 + lastest kernel 2.6 and the latest release version.
I want to create a special FTP account as such:
- The user would only be able to view and upload to one directory, such as mysite.com/images/
- The user would only be able to upload .jpg files, no code/php/html or anything, just jpg pictures.
- There would be a limit of upload. (ie. only 50 MB of upload per day)
- The user would only be able to delete the files that he uploaded. (or the user would only be able to view the files he uploaded)
I have an account on an older server. Its plesk.
But now that I pointed the domain I can no longer access the old server from the web.
So this is my shared ip:
66.235.201.136
Now there are about 10 domains on the IP.
what would my URL look like to access one of those accounts in plesk in the browser?
66.235.201.136/~rgratitu
I've tried the above and it doesn't work.
...and has been for several hours now.
Somehow, I am not filled with confidence.
I am moving hosts and my old host is unable to backup my current site and give me a single tar or zip
file of my websites (They do not use cpannel)
The only access I have to them is var ftp and there custom control pannel, I have been backuing up.
My new cpanel host has given me SHH access and I was trying to
run a ftpsync a perl based script to sync a site but it times out "421 No Transfer Timeout (900 seconds)"
At the moment I am backing up the site to my local pc but it has been running for the last 12 hours, All the sites only total about 350mb but they are made up of lots of small files and I think that this is the reason why it is taking so long.
I wanted to know if any one had any other ideas as I am a little bit worried that I might lose some data that is why I would like to some how backup my old host direct to my new host.
I have about 5 sites all hosted on my same hosting account. One of those domains is attached to the hosting account. I place my other domains in a folder of a sub-directory of my main domain. This has been working fine, up until today when i noticed a weird error. I give you a little example of how my sites are setup
my main domain:
www.maindomain.com
My other sites hosted in a sub-directory of my main domain:
www.maindomain.com/sites/site2/
www.maindomain.com/sites/site3/
How my other sites appear on the web:
www.site2.com
www.site3.com
This works fine for every page until i go to www.site2.com/index.php
It redirects to www.maindomain.com/sites/site2/index.php for some reason
Can WHT'ers please suggest some reliable UK hosts so I can do some research on them? I am just looking for a small hosting account hosting one domain.

Wich hosting with MySQL remote access do you know?
I know there are so many similar threads related to this issue in this forum, I know but my situation is a bit different from other guys, please read the following lines,
I've got a forum with approximately 100 users concurrently, now I'm looking for a shared hosting with relatively high simultaneous MySQL connections number at least 50 and also allows Shell access to dump or restore the MySQL database. but the main problem is lots of US hostings do not host Iranian I dunno US government has problem with Iran's government but I can't understand what's my guilt in this debate?
I often need to access my sites from public places, which are behind firewalls, don't have access to hard disk and any Windows tool (just plain internet access).
Problem: firewall, closed ports: 8082 (cPanel), 2078 (SSL; I don't know, if I'll need this), 2077 and maybe others.
Which hosting features I need? to be able to
1. access cpanel, when port 8082 is closed (I was using cpanelproxy.net until now with success).
2. for uploading files from other websites directly to my website (without prior downloading on a PC hard disc) - I've herad SSH should work, but what exact SSH I need - any experience someone? Any other solution? I was trying WEb Disc feature in cPanel11 but it needs port 2078 or 2077 open...
I need a reliable, free host where I can run wget on a URL (less than 1k) every 10 minutes via a cron job.
Can anyone reccommend anything?
