64bit Windows Vpses
Are these unheard of?
Are there any out there? Im looking at recompiling some custom server software into 64-bit ... (I am waiting on one library to be updated) .. to make use of the extra RAM allocations, and slight speed increase.

Migrating Windows VPSes
I've got a few Windows Server 2003 VPSes on a Xen 3.2 VPS. DomU disk storage is in LVM. I'd like to move them to a different server running Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2. Anyone have any idea how to migrate the DomUs? I have full root/Administrator access to all the boxes in question.

Anyone Tested Xen 3.2.1 With Windows VPSes
Just wondering if anyone here has tested windows VPSes with the latest PV drivers and xen 3.2.1? So far it looks pretty solid and the CPU doesn't go crazy like the older versions. What do you guys think? Also what do windows vpses hosters here use? I was looking at testing out XenSource for work and recommending it. But if the typical Xen VPS can handle windows then it won't be necessary although I like alot of the features that xensource has. Anyone else here use some other products in the hosting business?

Stress Testing VPSes
I've been playing with hyperVM lately and was wondering what tools all you computer geeks use to stress test your VPSes. Right now I'm testing out Xen VPSes, Linux AND Windows. Can some people recommend some tools to stress test reliability of the VPSes on both linux and windows? Windows seems a little flaky to me on Xen unless I'm doing something wrong. Stress tests based on a hosting environment would be perfect.

32bit Vs. 64bit
I have been trying to research this but I cant seem to find an answer. The big question I am trying to figure out is the comparison in clock speed for different processor bits. For example, a 32 bit Pentium 4 at 3.2ghz versus a 64 bit AMD Athlon 2.0 Ghz?

Choosing 32bit Versus 64bit OS
I'm in the process of preparing to install CentOS 5 on my server, and was wondering whether most people recommend going with the 64bit version or sticking with 32bit. My server's CPU is 64-bit capable (Xeon 3060 at SoftLayer), and I have previously run CentOS 4.4 64bit on it, though I did have some struggles from time to time getting things to work (following setup guides that tend to assume 32bit more often than not). I'll be running just a standard setup of PHP 5, MySQL 5, and Apache 2, powering several moderate-traffic sites that run on the Drupal CMS (e.g. about 7000-10000 visitors per day total, though hopefully more in the future of course). I don't plan on running a control panel other than Webmin, though I might get DirectAdmin or similar in the future to make hosting some friends/clients a bit simpler. Will going with 64bit offer any worthwhile advantage with this setup?

RHEL 5 - 32bit V 64bit Running Cpanel 11 For Hosting
As cPanel is an integral part of server hosting and has the ability of compiling Apache 1.3.x with PHP4 (cgi) and PHP5 (dso) on your server OS. Does anyone know or have baselines/benchmarks for which performs better generally for hosting: 32bit or 64bit RedHat 5 when cPanel 11 has compiled for the Apache and php mentioned above on either of these OS editions? (assume latest versions of apache/php4/5) I was wondering if 32bit performed better or 64bit on a quad core Xeon. Don't forget PHP is compiled for prefork and not multi-threading for Apache 1.3.41 (which are considered legacy 32bit forked apps compiled against 64bit OS). Or rephrased, could i be hampering performance by running it on a 64bit OS on a Xeon (X3210) or improving performance? I'd assume 64bit would offer better all round processing power, or is this a misconception. I recently decided to get a server on RedHat Enterprise 5 X86_64 (64bit), when i wondered if 32bit version would have provided better performance and been the better options for compatibility.

32 Or 64bit & Existing Domain Net Vs New Domain
delving into a new server, a dual opteron w/Centos. Got two questions as I think about setup. 1) 32 bit or 64bit? 2) Regarding host names and server assignemt...I can either assign it as a node to a domain hosted elsewhere in a reseller account, or I can start with a completely unused domain which is currently parked. Any preference, in an ideal world? (I have absolutely no preference, but it occurrred to me it may or may not be of consequence, perfomance & IT-wise and generally speaking .. all things being equal, of course.) Like I said, a newbie. So I'm braced for the if-you-have-to-ask, you-shouldn't-be-in-one" musings for these rather basic boneheaders.

Windows 2008 Versus Windows 2003 Server

Is Windows 2008 Slower Than Windows 2003
I'm making a reasonably uninformed comparison here. Since Windows Vista is noted to be more resource intensive and slower than Win XP, are we right in assuming that Windows 2008 is slower than Windows 2003? For instance, with two boxes with an identical hardware setup but the two different server OSes, will the same application like, say MySQL run slower on the Win 2008 machine?

Do Shared Windows Hosters Actually Like Windows Technology
There seem to be strong forum rules in place about the kinds of posts that hosters can make. But from my perspective it is somehow leaving a large gap in useful information I would like to know that I can't quite put my finger on right now. So I would like to get responses from Windows hosters in this thread without violating any forum spam guidelines and I sure hope I'm not wasting my time here with this concept but here goes... So, the topic: Ultimately, the thing Windows Web Hosters are providing is the delivery of information that has been constructed by developers using program code they have assembled using a large array of mostly .NET technology. The reason the Hoster is providing Windows hosting is that a sufficiently large enough population of Web Developers have been attracted to some aspect of the Windows technology stack. And there is certainly lots of innovative and interesting technology that attracts developers to focus on .NET in just the same way that there is also interesting technology in the Linux world. So here's the problem. It appears as if the Windows hosting companies with the odd exception have almost no interest in Windows and .NET technology. But if they actually did have such an interest, it is not clear how they would communicate it for discussion here at WHT because of the spam rules and of course trying to communicate anything at all about hosting on the general internet is just swamped by spam. The noise level is just insane! So I am hoping that such a discussion can take place in this thread by asking some very specific questions: 1. What interesting Microsoft technology have you researched, tested or played with lately? 2. What programs or scripts have you personally developed lately to investigate .NET 3.5 features? 3. What do you think of XBAP delivery from the net and why do you think it hasn't caught on in a larger way since it sure delivers a richer client experience than Flash or even Silverlight. 4. What do you think of Azure and will Microsoft let hosters be part of the cloud anytime soon? Can you think of useful or interesting Azure mashups from a hosting perspective? 5. Have you tried any totally silly and insane things with the .NET runtime inside of SQL Server 2005/2008 that would give your DB guys a heart attack? 6. Have you tried out the Google systems where you give your employees 20% of company time to play around with personal projects like this?
