Choosing 32bit Versus 64bit OS
I'm in the process of preparing to install CentOS 5 on my server, and was wondering whether most people recommend going with the 64bit version or sticking with 32bit. My server's CPU is 64-bit capable (Xeon 3060 at SoftLayer), and I have previously run CentOS 4.4 64bit on it, though I did have some struggles from time to time getting things to work (following setup guides that tend to assume 32bit more often than not). I'll be running just a standard setup of PHP 5, MySQL 5, and Apache 2, powering several moderate-traffic sites that run on the Drupal CMS (e.g. about 7000-10000 visitors per day total, though hopefully more in the future of course). I don't plan on running a control panel other than Webmin, though I might get DirectAdmin or similar in the future to make hosting some friends/clients a bit simpler. Will going with 64bit offer any worthwhile advantage with this setup?

RHEL 5 - 32bit V 64bit Running Cpanel 11 For Hosting
As cPanel is an integral part of server hosting and has the ability of compiling Apache 1.3.x with PHP4 (cgi) and PHP5 (dso) on your server OS. Does anyone know or have baselines/benchmarks for which performs better generally for hosting: 32bit or 64bit RedHat 5 when cPanel 11 has compiled for the Apache and php mentioned above on either of these OS editions? (assume latest versions of apache/php4/5) I was wondering if 32bit performed better or 64bit on a quad core Xeon. Don't forget PHP is compiled for prefork and not multi-threading for Apache 1.3.41 (which are considered legacy 32bit forked apps compiled against 64bit OS). Or rephrased, could i be hampering performance by running it on a 64bit OS on a Xeon (X3210) or improving performance? I'd assume 64bit would offer better all round processing power, or is this a misconception. I recently decided to get a server on RedHat Enterprise 5 X86_64 (64bit), when i wondered if 32bit version would have provided better performance and been the better options for compatibility.

Many people have some problems with vmware server on some 64bit operation systems. If your server's ram is more than 6GB, you have to have a 64bit OS but I have tried to install vmware server on a 64bit server, it seems to be crashing my vmware server every 5 min and I cant use it more until I reset this service. I have a dedicated box with following specs Core2Quad 2.4ghz 2x500gb hdd 8gb ram I installed 32bit centos5 in it ( because I use lxadmin ;lxadmin wont support 64bit) Installed kernel-PAE successfully and rebooted the server. but the server still boots into the old kernel. I am pleased to report success with my first attempt of installing Cpanel on a 64bit vps running Fed4. In fact..this is the first time in known history I have tried anything this..uhhh.."risky"..and it work the very first time. delving into a new server, a dual opteron w/Centos. Got two questions as I think about setup. 1) 32 bit or 64bit? 2) Regarding host names and server assignemt...I can either assign it as a node to a domain hosted elsewhere in a reseller account, or I can start with a completely unused domain which is currently parked. Any preference, in an ideal world? (I have absolutely no preference, but it occurrred to me it may or may not be of consequence, perfomance & IT-wise and generally speaking .. all things being equal, of course.) Like I said, a newbie. VMware Server
Does anyone here use VMware server on a dedicated server to run Windows or other OS? And in terms of IP address how would this work? Do you need to set the VM as being NATed, or does it have it's own external IP? In terms of performance on a typical 100$-200$/mo dedicated server, how good is it? All these factors depend on a lot of things and I realize that, though. (what apps run, etc) And do server providers even allow to install something like this? I've never leased a dedicated server before but I'm thinking of getting a linux one, but also running a windows VM for a RunUO server, and unfortunately that only runs in windows. I want a linux server as I prefer LAMP for hosting, and I'd try to get a few clients on the server just so I can pay it off monthly. Also Linux servers are generally cheaper monthly and I like the idea of using SSH tunnels rather then straight RDP, which gives me chills just thinking of, from a security perspective.

Not to start a flamewar, but I was curious about real world scenarios, and peoples experience with and recommendations for either. I have been asked to plan out a smallish virtualization environment (10-12 Dell hosts, iSCSI Equalogic backend), and when reviewing the cost of going with VMWare over Citrix, I can't seem to justify the costs. I figure since Amazon runs on Xen, it must be pretty decent, but am I missing something?

How Many People Use VMWare?
I'm not sure how many people here use VMWare, but I'll give this question a shot... I'm looking for a solution similar to Winrar that can view the contents of the .vmdk file. Either to extract any files, or just view the contents without having the have the virtual machine online. I checked Google as well as VMWare's forums/website with no avail.

VMware Bridging
My server runs windows 2003 St SP2 . and it has 2 physical network cards My data center provided me with 5 IPs . I have setup VMware server V 1.0.3 I installed Centos under the virtual machine using NAT and DHCP , The guest runs with now problem but it uses local ip which means it is only accessible from the server desktop itself. I want to make this guest use one of my 5 IPs, I understand that I have to use bridged network not NATing . but the problem is that I'm not able to configure the VMware to use bridged . and when I try ( bridged + static IP for the guest ) the virtual machine cannot download files nor I can access it from outside

i'm trying to run ubuntu as a guest os on windows 2003 via vmware, although i can't get networking to work. -Bridged Connection -1 Physical Nic -Static Ips This is what i've done so far. 1. Installed Vmware, added ubuntu virtual machine and configured network settings in vmware to bridged. 2. In Ubuntu went to, System - Administration - Networking and configured ETH1 with the following: -Static Ip address -External Network IP -Subnet mask -External Gateway address 3. Disabled Vmware dhcp service. Am i forgetting something? Do i need to be setting the network info to use internal info from the bridged network?

Recently, I installed VMWare Server 1.0.4 on my dedicated server. When I tried to install my private IP on my VMWare, I had no clue how to do that. I used NAT networking to share my main OS with my private VPS, but when I try to run a service that needs the port XXXX to be open, it wouldent let me use it. For an example, my main OS IP is 82.00.000.000. My VPS is sharing the same IP address with the main OS. I tried to run an Apache service on my VPS, but when I try to access it by the IP 82.00.000.000 it gives me a connection reset page. This also happens on other services like FTP and stuff. My VPS is running Windows XP Professional SP2 with a legal retail license and my main OS on the server is CentOS 4.5

Networking VMWARE On 2003 @ SL
I really need some help with a new server I just got over at SL, I have windows 2003 and vmware server installed and I want to have 2-3 vmwares running websites each on port 80 and each having a separate external ip. I have contacted SL and they have set me up with the vlan and extra ips I need I have enabled IP forwarding on the 2003 host but I don't know exactly how to configure the vmware server networking and each vmware to use my new ips and to make sure each external ip is pointing to each vmware.

Hosting A LAN Using VMWAre
Does anyone think this is feasable? For instance, we all see web servers hosted in the "cloud", as well as pay per user exchange and other mail servers. Now, what if I wanted to host all my servers (web, email, file, domain controller, and several application servers) at a data center using Vmware. I did some research and found out that the cost of creating a private cloud (VMWARE licensing alone) would be prohibitive. Is there a way to rent/lease a "private cloud"? Or perhaps I would not even mind if we shared space with others on the server(s) on a "public cloud". Any ideas on if VPS (or other types of) hosters that could provide this service?

I am just trying the water with VMware as a virtual platform to give some friends some freedom in hosting and cut down on the cpanel cost with vps I installed vmware on my centos5 distribution, and used the default values vmnet0 is bridged to eth0. I have multiple ips to the host server eth0 to eth0:7 i think, how do i create a bridge or assign an ip only for that one vps to use. create another bridge for eth0:7? then manually enter the ip info in the guest and bam?
