Windows 2003 Datacenter Edition Vs Enterprise Edition
I have some questions about Windows 2003. I have tested many different Windows VPS hosts and I have noticed that some of them offers Windows 2003 enterprise edition and some offers Datacenter edition. What is the difference between the two? I remember that godaddy had datacenter ed and the vps I use now (eukhost) is using enterprise edition.

Windows Server 2003 - What Edition To Go With
I've been working on a large online browser game for the last year on and off - it's due to open for beta in Oct. This game is coded in PHP/AJAX with MySQL. It's quite heavy on different graphics with characters, items, illustrations etc. It will also have a selection of Flash games to play. Similar gaming sites have more than 1000 users online in peak hours and we estimate that and more within the first 3-5 months of opening. I want to open my site on a Windows Server as I'm a lot more familiar with Windows (Having an MCP for Windows Server 2003). I am unsure however what edition to go with. At first I thought Windows Server 2003 Web Edition (Being a website!), but this only supports up to 2gb of ram I believe? and may prove to be an issue if we need to upgrade due to the high demand of online users. I understand I can have more than one server, but would you recommend another edition?

Windows 2008 Standard VS Web Edition
Posted this as an add-on to another question I had in the Tech forum, had no reply, perhaps I posted in the wrong forum. Posting here instead: I noticed MS has lifted some of the restriction concerning the Web Server edition, it's like half the price of Standard. I'm mainly going to be hosting a couple of separate web sites, run ASP.Net and PHP, along with some database servers (currently considering SQL Server Express and MySQL). Email server is being considered, though our load isn't too great, it's just for a couple of friends and myself. We're also intending to run game servers off it (Counter-Strike Source, Call of Duty series, etc.) on occasions. Would the Web Server edition suffice for these? Or is it still technically limited/has license restrictions, and I will need at least the standard edition? I may also intend to serve streaming windows Media files.

Windows 2008 Versus Windows 2003 Server
With Windows 2003 server, there are comprehensive lists of what you need to do to secure the server before use. For Windows 2008, I wonder is there such a list? Or is it true as what I heard from Microsoft that it is already secured out of the box? Anyone has any resources on the hardening or preparation of 2008 for server hosting uses?

Windows 2003 And 2008 Web
i wanted to buy a dedicated server and when i had questions about 2003 web, i talked to hivelocity live support and i think it was dave who told me that Windows 2003 web has a restriction for mysql which was 512 KB. I myself is planning to own a gameserver that uses java and mysql and i know for sure uses much much more space than 512 KB. Is this true that 2003 restricts the size of your DB and when your DB reaches 512 kb, it can no longer be used? Also, is the windows 2008 web licensing fee the same as windows 2003 web?

Windows 2003 Web & Standard
I'm sure there is an easy answer to this, and i'm probably being a little lazy, but the google searches i did didn't really help. As I need to have windows hosting, apart from the price, is there any difference between setting up the server with windows 2003 standard edition and web edition? I want to run MS SQL and My sql databases, run asp, .Net 2 and php on the server. I'd also want to connect with RDP which i'm assuming is fine. Most of the searches seem to talk about the fact that you can't set up active directory,or making it a domain controller but not much else.

Windows Xp Rather Than Windows Server 2003?
Is there hosting that use windows xp rather than windows server 2003? What is the advantage of using windows server2003 anyway? Most of the time I just need to run some programs that need huge bandwidth. If I want to host sites, I'll just use xamp. I think windows xp license is cheaper.

Windows Edition
I was wondering if anyone know how the anon edition is suppose to look? Is it just like a regular edition? From what I read, it is an honor system where you trust the client not to break the license. Am I wrong here? Would there be anything built in to prevent a client from running authenticated softwares? built into the OS itself?

Is Windows 2008 Slower Than Windows 2003
I'm making a reasonably uninformed comparison here. Since Windows Vista is noted to be more resource intensive and slower than Win XP, are we right in assuming that Windows 2008 is slower than Windows 2003? For instance, with two boxes with an identical hardware setup but the two different server OSes, will the same application like, say MySQL run slower on the Win 2008 machine?

Windows Server 2003 Installation
I work for a big organization that has a check list for standard windows server 2003 installation. The list includes stuff such as , removing some users and adding some domain users, changing system name, windows update, ie7 installation, adding the system to the domain, installing norton anit virus from file shares and so on. Is there anyway to auto mate this or atleast everything to do with system settings including windows update ? (Minus norton install) I am sure one can make an answer file but i am not convinced by that answer as the post installation changes require editing regedit and other local security policies.

Windows Server 2003 AD / DNS
We have two Windows Server 2003 machines as active directory controllers and DNS servers for our in-house operations. For our purposes, let's say the domain name is example.com. Both servers have DNS, and example.com is stored in Active Directory to allow us to use the benefits this provides. Our issue is probably simple, but I'm not sure how to fix it. Let's call server one EX1, and server two EX2. These have local IPs of 192.168.1.111 and 192.168.1.112, respectively. We want example.com to be resolved to an external IP address (for web hosting), let's say 1.2.3.4. The problem is, the two domain controllers keep registering example.com with their internal IP addresses .111 and .112, so the DNS round-robins between 1.2.3.4 and the two internal servers, which aren't web servers. Is there a way we can get those DNS controllers to stop registering their internal IPs as example.com?

My question is: - I am better to setup 64 bits or better run the old and stable 32 bits? I consider this question because: - I might install Exchange 2007 - I might upgrade to Windows 2008 Out of this, is there known problem/issue with 64 bits Windows 2003 OS?

Windows Server 2003 Hacked
At ThePlanet.com, I have a server running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition with Service Pack 2 (build 3790). After several years with no problems, my server was apparently recently hacked. The server has several FrontPage web sites, and each of those sites had the following code inserted into the home page. <iframe width="0" height="0" src="[url] <iframe width="0" height="0" src="[url] <iframe width="0" height="0" src="[url] <iframe width="0" height="0" src="[url] <iframe width="0" height="0" src="[url] <iframe width="0" height="0" src="[url] Which looks like it is intended to benefit "onlyu", who is probably an affiliate of four of the listed sites. I removed the code and changed the password to the server. But a few days later the following code appeared. <iframe height="0" width="0" src=[url] name="I1"></iframe> <iframe height="0" width="0" src=[url] name="I2"></iframe> I changed the password again and removed several users from the list of users in the computer. But a few days later the following code appeared ... <iframe width="0" height="0" src="[url] <iframe width="0" height="0" src=[url] Comparing the three groups of code, I'd say it was done by a human and not some sort of Trojan bot. Does anyone have experience with this particular problem, or general advice about how to deal with it?

Windows 2003 Server Firewall
can anyone recommend firewall software for Windows 2003 Server. I'm aware it has a firewall on board, but this one doesn't allow me to specific access to specific IP address on the server, which are configured on a single adapter. Also, I've looked into IPsec, which is my backup solution if I cannot find a decent firewall. Unfortunately, IPsec is kind of restrictive and not particularly stateful. I'm looking for a simple firewall, which is not too expensive. This is only for one simple server.

Compromised Windows 2003 Server
I have been trying to troubleshoot our Windows 2003 server for weeks, but have made no lead way. The following are the steps they take to breach the server. “They” are able to create an account. Some used usernames they have created are: sysadmin, adm, mssqladm. It is very odd, looking in the event viewer, they just appear to create accounts out of the blue, they don’t even login or attempt to login or anything, all the sudden it says, New Account Created. “They” then change the password of the account they just created. Then “They” assign themselves the following group permissions, ‘Users’, and ‘Administrators’. ** SHAKING MY HEAD ** How the bloody hell do they assign themselves Administrator rights? Then the do a few different actions depending, often times they disabled the windows firewall, and change open ports, other times they simply just logoff, other times, they have placed Trojans horses and other malware in their temporary internet folder under their use folderr. This has been a cat and mouse game for weeks, I catch the new account, and immediately delete it, and check the firewall and enable if needed, then run a full system scan with AVG and Prevx. Sometmies AVG finds Trojans and malware, other times its clears. I have racked my brain, checked all running processes with google, and they are seem legit. I have updated everything in windows via windows update, we are running windows 2003 server SP2. I have looked at the users and groups and everything seems secure. Do you have guys have any idea what is going on? I have feeling something is running internally, which is allowing them to create the accounts. Is there a tool that tracks all currently running processes, and allows you to go look at the logs to see what exactly was running at a certain time?

As we have tried reinstalling FP extensions, and can't quite determine if this is a server related or Frontpage (software) related issue, I thought I'd try asking here.. The user is not able to log in using Frontpage. When trying to access www.site.com he gets an error message that "The folder www.site.com is not available. It may be at an unavailable location, password protected or the filename could contain / or ". The error message occurs just after typing the URL into the URL box... he doesn't even get prompted for username or password.
