32bit Or 64bit VPS

while setting up a server which will host VPS's. Currently I have CentOS 5.1 x64 as the host OS, and I'm playing around with Xen for VPS's. Would you recommend a 32bit VPS, or a 64bit VPS?

32bit Vs. 64bit
I have been trying to research this but I cant seem to find an answer.

The big question I am trying to figure out is the comparison in clock speed for different processor bits.

For example, a 32 bit Pentium 4 at 3.2ghz versus a 64 bit AMD Athlon 2.0 Ghz?

2 server configuration will look something like below. I heard that the 32bit kernel is better for the web server since I'll have cpanel on it. Anyone able to confirm this or should I just put 64bit on both of them?

2x250GB SATA2 (RAID1)
2GB RAM

DB Server

Choosing 32bit Versus 64bit OS
I'm in the process of preparing to install CentOS 5 on my server, and was wondering whether most people recommend going with the 64bit version or sticking with 32bit. My server's CPU is 64-bit capable (Xeon 3060 at SoftLayer), and I have previously run CentOS 4.4 64bit on it, though I did have some struggles from time to time getting things to work (following setup guides that tend to assume 32bit more often than not).

I'll be running just a standard setup of PHP 5, MySQL 5, and Apache 2, powering several moderate-traffic sites that run on the Drupal CMS (e.g. about 7000-10000 visitors per day total, though hopefully more in the future of course). I don't plan on running a control panel other than Webmin, though I might get DirectAdmin or similar in the future to make hosting some friends/clients a bit simpler.

Will going with 64bit offer any worthwhile advantage with this setup?

RHEL 5 - 32bit V 64bit Running Cpanel 11 For Hosting
As cPanel is an integral part of server hosting and has the ability of compiling Apache 1.3.x with PHP4 (cgi) and PHP5 (dso) on your server OS.

Does anyone know or have baselines/benchmarks for which performs better generally for hosting: 32bit or 64bit RedHat 5 when cPanel 11 has compiled for the Apache and php mentioned above on either of these OS editions? (assume latest versions of apache/php4/5)

I was wondering if 32bit performed better or 64bit on a quad core Xeon. Don't forget PHP is compiled for prefork and not multi-threading for Apache 1.3.41 (which are considered legacy 32bit forked apps compiled against 64bit OS).

Or rephrased, could i be hampering performance by running it on a 64bit OS on a Xeon (X3210) or improving performance? I'd assume 64bit would offer better all round processing power, or is this a misconception.

I recently decided to get a server on RedHat Enterprise 5 X86_64 (64bit), when i wondered if 32bit version would have provided better performance and been the better options for compatibility.

32 Or 64bit & Existing Domain Net Vs New Domain

1) 32 bit or 64bit?

2) Regarding host names and server assignemt...I can either assign it as a node to a domain hosted elsewhere in a reseller account, or I can start with a completely unused domain which is currently parked.

Any preference, in an ideal world?

(I have absolutely no preference, but it occurrred to me it may or may not be of consequence, perfomance & IT-wise and generally speaking .. all things being equal, of course.)

Like I said, a newbie. So I'm braced for the if-you-have-to-ask, you-shouldn't-be-in-one" musings for these rather basic boneheaders.

Memory Issues On JaguarPC VPS. Suggestions? Recommend A Virtual Private Server (VPS)
I recently moved my site from a shared hosting plan at $5 a month to a VPS at JaguarPC. I took advantage of one of the offers here at Web Host Talk. My setup has cPanel with 320MB of RAM. I have another site running the same software (Joomla, vBulletin) with cPanel and only 256MB of RAM at KnownHost.

I've had zero problems with Knownhost and the site is snappy. The site hosted at JaguarPC continues to have all kinds of problems. Running a number of sites, I don't always get to check in on my sites unless I know of a problem. I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention to this site, because it was having all types of PHP memory issues. When I first contacted JaguarPC, they said they boosted the memory in Apache. The issues remained, so I contacted them again. They recommended more RAM. Now, I checked on my KnownHost site and that's running on 256MB. I figured that maybe JaguarPC didn't allocate enough RAM when they set up the VPS. They confirmed 320MB. Not wanting to change hosts, I asked them to poke around a bit more, considering what I know about KnownHost and my success there.

I received this response:
have checked and you are running named service on your server. named caches dns data and this can also consume a lot of memory, sometimes over a 100 MB may be consumed by this service.

In addition to cPanel and named which are most memory consuming applications running on your server, there are other applications like apache web server and the php scripts running on the server also consume some memory.

It is highly recommended that you upgrade the RAM on your VPS significantly to avoid such problems which may cause disruption of service. You can find a list of RAM and other VPS addons in the following link.

Instead of helping me resolve the problem, they simply keep asking me to get more RAM.

For SEO purposes, I like to keep my sites on different hosts. Can anyone recommend a VPS?

I was certainly unaware that "named service" had such an impact on my VPS. If that's the case, is there any harm in not having this? SEO or otherwise?

Ubiquity VPS Four-month Review (and About Adventures With VPS In General
The short: Professional, honest, and competent. I've learned that when dealing with VPSes, if you want to be fancy you need to tolerate problems. While Icertainly had some interesting issues [url] with Ubiquity, besides a few of them they fall into the categories of 'stuff happens' and 'should get a dedicated server, instead'. It ran two of the most active adult communities in the world without a hitch. Except my members are addicted to them like crack and 15 minute lag issues are the end of the world for some : )

So now, four months after I left Acceleratedweb for Ubiquity [url]I am the proud owner of an overstock server from Ubiquity and am reviewing their VPS.

As the first link suggests - it wasn't my first shot with Ubiquity. I think that says a lot for making "If you ever want to come back." offers. They now have $125/month of my money, most of that guaranteed (I dislike having only one host so am probably going to try poking Futurehosting again after Lenny becomes a VPS install option there, or maybe Steadfast).

I really appreciate Ubiquity's patience with me while I learned how to self manage. I've come to detest control panels and have gotten rather good at it, especially after custom designing my own LAMP stack (handled over four thousand php page landings and forty thousand queries a minute from seventy connections... bad AJAX is a good DDOS simulation).

Typical Response Time: Ten minutes or so - pretty fast, though resolution can often be longer. The clock on vz010 is off by six hours on reboot. Very annoying.

General attitude: Not as individually detailed as AcceleratedWeb was, but this is okay, since I know more on my own now. Beyond that, they are generally pleasant compared to other VPS host's I've tried.

Server ping: Originally around 15 milliseconds. 40 now, and the same to my new server -

I wonder if echo requests or replies are throttled. I'm not sure if I'm a good judge here - the forums rarely take more than 2 mbps during any given minute unless I'm downloading a backup.

Server uptime: There was a crash a few days after I moved the forums to the VPS. November was around 99% with that, but otherwise it's closer to 99.8%, if you count occasional local outages. There is a router in between their network and their VPSes which sometimes goes haywire, which seems to be the main culprit.

Server speed: This is a bit tricky. Ubiquity only gives you access to one core. This may seem bad, but occasionally VPS members get hoggy, do you want one person out of thirty bringing your VPS down or one person out of four?

In the end, raw disk bandwidth is what counts for performance for me. The VPS server itself has a monstrous amount of RAM making this, usually, a non-issue. Occasionally though another VPSer would do something disk-heavy enough for us to suffer. "Get dedicated" <- we just did, that's why this review is here : )

Security: Ubiquity only took my root password when trying to diagnose the mystery disappearing disk space issue. They run a RAID and perform daily backups, and their control and billing software has no obvious security issues (though their billing software is plenty funky in other ways).

Price: Futurehosting is a bit more expensive but offers the future protect deal, while Ubiquity only permits one backup via the control panel. Pretty competitive for what is offered and allowed.

----

I did have issues with Ubiquity. Their DNS servers fritz occasionally. There was the mysterious disk issue that caused me to leave them in the first place. The server crash really made me grit my teeth. The system clock on vz010 gets set ahead 6 hours on reboot - very annoying (and the butt of a lot of time travel jokes on my forums). Even though that only happened twice. There are lag spike issues, but it never brought the forums down after the first time and even then it was resolved within 15 minutes.

Something I've learned and made it a bit of a mantra. Tolerate mistakes, cheap, do what you want - pick two. Or better, a good balance between them.

The support staff is both professional and, in general, technically competent. If something is over someone's head, it happens, it gets forwarded on and is generally dealt with. The only thing I really blame them for is letting vz010's clock be off for six hours after I notified them - but they were apparently rather busy.

----

I looked over dozens of VPSes for the criteria I wanted, and paid for several.

I needed a US host, in a fairly liberal state - I do not want my server hijacked by puritan authorities as had happened in Florida and Pennsylvania. I needed to host adult content, with an irc policy that makes sense. I needed to run Debian Lenny, and manage it on my own.

Out of all of them, Ubiquity was the only one that let me do everything I needed to, reliably and with confidence, for a price I could comfortably afford.

Not sure what else could matter, in the end. : )

Speed must be perfect,worldwide.

At least 4 IP's or more,or available for less then $2,50 per month.

The VPS provider must have his own hardware and tech staff 24/7/365.

My budget will be around $40 per month.

Lunarpages VPS Or Servint VPS? What Is Your Opinion On Lunarpages VPS?
I am looking for a new VPS and once again I think I am going to ditch Servint VPS in preference of a cheaper VPS. I know Servint is well known and they have a very good reputation here in this forum. I been longing to sign up with them but Lunarpages' offer looks very attractive.

What about Lunarpages?

It is $10 cheaper than Servint.

Lunarpages has 1000 GB bandwidth but Servint has only 500 GB.

Lunarpages has 20 GB storage but Servint has only 15 GB.

Lunarpages has 500 MB RAM but Servint has 384 MB guaranteed RAM (1 GB burst RAM).

Is the 500 MB RAM here http://www.lunarpages.com/virtual-private-server/ GUARANTEED RAM or SHARED BURSTABLE RAM?

The only thing that Lunarpages lost to Servint here is the number of IP address. Lunarpages comes with 1 IP but Servint offers 4 IP which is good for SEO.

I wanted to contact Lunarpages but couldn't find their contact email. Anyone know their contact email?

Convert From Plesk VPS To CPanel VPS
I mostly work with cPanel/WHM but, I have to work with Plesk for just one client of mine. He's on Plesk becoz I came to know Plesk worked better on 256MB VPS than cPanel in the early days. Hence, on my recommendation, he is on Plesk on a 512 MB Memory VPS till now for all these years.

I wonder how tedious it might be to convert from Plesk to cPanel? The client basically uses Joomala + vBulletin and runs forums as of now.

Also, which CP will perform better on 512 MB VPS - Plesk or cPanel.

Cpanel VPS - Plenty Of Free Memory, But 'committed' Memory Exceeds VPS RAM
I have a VPS. And have had an issue both when it was 1Gig and now I recently downgraded it to 768m, because I am moving some sites to a dedicated.

However, the part I am having trouble grasping is that when I look at graphs from Munin, it will typically always show 200-400MB free memory (and free -m and top agrees with munin), but Munin shows 'committed' memory that is above the total Ram on the VPS and once the 'committed' ram exceeds the VPS limit, processes start failing.

So, why is 'committed' memory exceeding the RAM on my VPS, when Munin, free -m and top all show there is free memory available?

Code:
root@server [~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 768 449 318 0 0 0
-/+ buffers/cache: 449 318
Swap: 0 0 0
Here's a graph that munin produces that shows the 'committed' memory exceeding the total memory.

Running A Vps Within A Vps
i'm thinking of installing virtualization software on a linux vps machine.

reason... windows vps vost so much and linux are much cheaper.
so within my cheap linux vps, i can install virtual windows using my pre-purchased win2000 license key.

has anyone tried this or is it completely not possible. also what linux-host virtualization software would you recommend?

note my linux vps already has kde with vnc running so i have a graphical interface to my linux vps at home.

Looking For A VPS ~$25
Looking for a VPS that has the following:

- Datacenter/Server located in the north east of USA (Something in NY or Chicago would be good enough)
- Approx 200~300GB bandwidth
- 256~512MB Ram preferred
- HDD Space is not an issue, something like 5GB is more than enough.
- Win2003 is a must
- A share of 1Ghz or more of CPU utilization preferred.
- Budget: $20 (+/- $5) USD/mth
- Accepts PayPal as payment method preferred, but not a requirement.

Also, if its possible, please give me a sample IP to ping with, since I am running a Warcraft 3 DotA server, plus a small webserver to serve stats, so I wanted the lowest ping possible.

Get Everything Out From A VPS
So it seems my proxy got linked on a lot of blogs, and is more popular than ever... 8.2k unique and 14.6k pageviews in 12 hours...

It seems like my VPS is getting slower and slower now, as it takes a lot of time to load the page. Any suggestion on how I could optimize the VPS in the best way, making it faster? It isn't directly resource intensive, the current stats is:

CPU load averages 0.08 (1 min) 0.10 (5 mins) 0.09 (15 mins)
Real memory 1024 MB total, 57.28 MB used

(I'm using nginx btw)

Is it that the internet connection is slow/can't handle it?

VPS In The UK
Have decided to make the leap from shared hosting to VPS to host one of my more traffic/resource intensive sites (octane.ie).

Must have the following:

- cPanel/WHM (installed or optional)

- Based in the UK

That's it, that's our criteria.

We purchased a plan with Innohosting last week but progress hasn't been good so we've decided to cut and run before we go to the trouble of moving all the accounts over.

VPS Other Than LW
I'm currently with LiquidWeb and they are a solid operation. Fast email responses, no major billing issues and no server issues as well.

However, I am not satisfied with the speed of the server. Initially, I thought it was just me. I wget quite a few files from other servers, and with previous providers; I'm accustomed to averaging about 1MB per second. However, with LW, I'm averaging about 250K - 325K per second.

A couple other uses have also noticed this, and I guess I grew spoiled with my old provider (1MB burstable to 10).

Any suggestions? Price really isn't an issue as I don't mind paying for quality. But, for the 55 bucks I'm paying a month, I should definitely have a lot more speed.

Needs are:

Fully managed
Cpanel/WHM
Linux
20-40GB disk space
400GB Monthly data transfer minimum

Basically, something simliar to LW but with a faster pipe.

VPS
I am trying to find a better VPS host. I am currently with TekTonic Hosting and the connection is SLOOOOW!! I've been looking around for a new VPS host and all I've gotten are bloated prices for a cheap server. Right now, I'm told I'm on a 1.0 MBps connection (outbound) and it's very slow. So I'm trying to find another VPS.

I'm on a budget and I'd like to find a good reliable VPS with the following:
-256 MB of RAM (at least)
-10 GB of space (at least)
-Fast and reliable connection
-Debian Linux (if possible)
-Unmanaged

I'm trying to find something within the range of $1 - $25 that won't have a slow connection speed. If anyone knows where I can get a VPS for a price like this, I'd appreciate it greatly.

If you're a VPS hoster and you're reading this, I'd like this to be a request if possible.

VPS
We have been running our website on a shared hosting and after a plan of redesigning our website, we now plan to move to a more reliable host, one with a good technical support.

I've come across VPS, but never really, fully understand its advantage and disadvantages. One hosting says

"You can perform server reboots and OS reloads from the provided Virtuozzo Power Panel, giving you complete control of your Virtual Server. As this is a self-managed product, we will only be able to provide support for any server or network related issues."

I'm not really sure about this VPS, since I've had only experience with shared environment. What kinds of situation can they be of support and what situations will be on our end to handle?

let me rephrase that, i have 0 experience with VPS. IF i purchase it, what would i get, and how do i start my website? or should i stick with shared?

Should I Get A VPS
I am providing hosting for a few customers, I try to keep to count low and provide the good service that they are paying for. But they are mostly html and some minor php, nothing really like a forum or cmss.

Now would it help me to get a VPS for better speed? That's the real question I have, I need good speed. And sometimes shared hosts (or shared reseller hosts) slow down. And have bad uptime etc.

So speed is my main concern.

Is VPS The Way To Go
I currently use whmautopilot, whm control panel and cpanel for a small number of accounts.

My problem is one of my accounts is a forum of 1gig in size and is slow at times. Very slow even with only a couple of dozen concurrent users. (invision based with lots of mods).

I know nothing at all about vps and am not that techy.

Is it a big learning curve? Do they generally come installed with the above software? What is the real difference between managed and unmanaged?

What would be a fair price to pay for something of say 10gig hard drive and that would speed access to my forum?

Vps Keeps Going Down
I have a VPS at bigVPS (for almost a year). It keeps crashing after a couple of weeks of uptime, requiring me to ask for a reboot, which can leave my sites offline for up to a day (I'm in the UK, so when I check the server in the morning and find it down, it takes a while before the bloke wakes up and get my email ).

Now, I'm just wondering if this is something I'm doing wrong, or a problem with bigVPS.

How much uptimes are other customers getting?

My vps has 256mb of ram and it's run using xen. One problem I'm seeing is the following error message:
"4gb seg fixup, process [a process name here]"

With several thousand errors for each process supressed for each process. Doesn't sound good. Googling the error suggests I need to install libc6-xen,

Is there any other way of finding out why the system has crashed?
