Q8300, 8GB Ram And It's Not Enough
I'm currently running a very large (vBulletin) forum on a single server. Up to now, I've been upgrading as the forum grows, tweaking what can be tweaked and at the moment, for about two hours every day (during peak time) the CPU maxes out and the webserver starts dropping connections. This isn't a massive problem at the moment, you just have to refresh more at these times. However as the traffic grows, this will only get worse. I'm looking at my future upgrade options (the site shows no signs of slowing growth). As far as I can tell, I have two options: 1. Upgrade to a more powerful single server - a. Core i7 - b. Dual (two CPUs on one board) Core2 Quad Xeon - c. Dual (two CPUs on one board) AMD Opteron 2. Two server solution, one server for MySQL, other server for memcache, xcache and webservice. The former option is, obviously, much less expensive. Though i7 is incredibly expensive, it will offer a significant improvement. However, I'll most likely be facing the same problem in 6 months to a year...

CPanel Or DirectAdmin Using 8GB RAM
I'm trying to decide what panel to get, I've used cPanel and DirectAdmin before so trying to figure out which is best suited for me. Obviously cPanel has more features but uses more ram. Do I really need all the features of cPanel or can I get by using DirectAdmin? The server I'm going to get will have 8GB RAM so does it matter that cPanel uses more memory because there is so much ram anyway?

MySQL Optimization, Intel E8300, 8Gb RAM, CPanel
I'm trying to optimize a server (Intel E8300) with 8Gb of RAM and WHM/cPanel administration panel. Now the server has only 46 accounts in WHM, and about 10.000 unique visitors / day As mysql is always on top for CPU ussage I have edited 2 values in my.cnf, but this was done in 10 minutes and not to much research, any more help will be appreciated. On this server as I see it's been using MyISAM for storage engine and maybe just a few tabels with InnoDB ....

Shared Hosting RAM Vs Virtual Private Server (VPS) RAM
I have a reseller shared hosting plan that allows for 50 sub-accounts and I'm using about 20. I am looking at getting a VPS with between 256 - 394 mb RAM and am wondering if I were to move all of my accounts to the new VPS would I be ending up with less RAM to use for all of my sites. To put this another way how do most reseller plans manage RAM usage? Do each of my sub-accounts have access to say 64 mb RAM so that if I were to use all 50 sub accounts I would have access to 50*64 mb. From what I've experienced and read with shared hosting my thought is I could end up with less access to server resources, CPU and RAM, with a VPS plan - though with VPS the resources are more guaranteed rather than being dependent on the usage of other accounts on the server. The reason I am looking at a VPS account is that I have a site that will likely have 1000s of users with a server intensive script (Moodle) and I know it would violate the reseller account agreement. So maybe my plan should be to keep the reseller account and use it for my database driven sites and use the VPS for the server intensive site and my html based sites. Also, my VPS choice seems to be narrowed down to Liquidweb, JaguarPC and Zone - has anybody heard of any negative experiences with Liquidweb? I can't find any.

Many people have some problems with vmware server on some 64bit operation systems. If your server's ram is more than 6GB, you have to have a 64bit OS but I have tried to install vmware server on a 64bit server, it seems to be crashing my vmware server every 5 min and I cant use it more until I reset this service. CPU : Intel Xeon Nehalem 3440 2.53Ghz Quad Core w/ HyperThreading (8 virtual cores) Ram : 4 GB DDR2 Os : CentOS 64bit I have had an another server and i have solved this problem whit Debian. but on CentOS I usually have problem, and I cant use vmware server. Have you any idea how i solve this problem on CentOS 64bit?

I've been having good luck with desktop class systems using boards like the Supermicro PDSMI+. But I have need for a 8gb solution. 2gb DDR2 modules are still in $300 range... so 8gb is costing me 4x as much as 4gb. 4 x 1gb=$300 using Kingston DDR2 from Newegg Problem is motherboards either have 4 slots or I have to move up to Opteron/Xeon boards. I'm open on ECC or not, had failues either way

Choosing 32bit Versus 64bit OS
I'm in the process of preparing to install CentOS 5 on my server, and was wondering whether most people recommend going with the 64bit version or sticking with 32bit. My server's CPU is 64-bit capable (Xeon 3060 at SoftLayer), and I have previously run CentOS 4.4 64bit on it, though I did have some struggles from time to time getting things to work (following setup guides that tend to assume 32bit more often than not). I'll be running just a standard setup of PHP 5, MySQL 5, and Apache 2, powering several moderate-traffic sites that run on the Drupal CMS (e.g. about 7000-10000 visitors per day total, though hopefully more in the future of course). I don't plan on running a control panel other than Webmin, though I might get DirectAdmin or similar in the future to make hosting some friends/clients a bit simpler. Will going with 64bit offer any worthwhile advantage with this setup?

RHEL 5 - 32bit V 64bit Running Cpanel 11 For Hosting
As cPanel is an integral part of server hosting and has the ability of compiling Apache 1.3.x with PHP4 (cgi) and PHP5 (dso) on your server OS. Does anyone know or have baselines/benchmarks for which performs better generally for hosting: 32bit or 64bit RedHat 5 when cPanel 11 has compiled for the Apache and php mentioned above on either of these OS editions? (assume latest versions of apache/php4/5) I was wondering if 32bit performed better or 64bit on a quad core Xeon. Don't forget PHP is compiled for prefork and not multi-threading for Apache 1.3.41 (which are considered legacy 32bit forked apps compiled against 64bit OS). Or rephrased, could i be hampering performance by running it on a 64bit OS on a Xeon (X3210) or improving performance? I'd assume 64bit would offer better all round processing power, or is this a misconception. I recently decided to get a server on RedHat Enterprise 5 X86_64 (64bit), when i wondered if 32bit version would have provided better performance and been the better options for compatibility.

Is 256MB Of Ram Enough For A Server
I am searching for a new webhost, as my current one has been having ongoing problems for the last year or so. I am considering this plan at hostmysite.com: [url] However, it says that it uses 256MB of ram ... is this enough? Difference Between RAM And Burstable RAM?
What is the difference between RAM and burstable RAM? What even is RAM! I ask because I upgraded my server (again) today. I went from 256 RAM, to 512, now to 1024 of RAM. Is 1 gig of RAM good? Also, I want to know in general if I am getting a good deal here I have a VPS now with these specs: Dedicated RAM: 1024 MB Burstable RAM: 4096 MB RAID 10 Disk Space: 100 GB FREE Backup Space: 100 GB Premium Bandwidth: 4000 GB Dedicated IP Address: 2 Monthly Price: $119.99 does that seem like a good deal to you? I ask because I am new to all of this, and don't know if I am getting jipped. Should a site on this server run fast, if it is a high traffic "tube" site?

Server Has 7 GBs Of Free RAM
Current server has 4 GB ram, all buffered by linux. Code: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 4054 3917 137 0 99 2139 -/+ buffers/cache: 1678 2375 Swap: 4094 0 4094 The buffer has 2375 MB of free ram. However this is a heavy mysql server. I want the empty ram be used by mysql so it becomes faster. We are currently moving to a 8GB ram server, and the free ram will be around 7 GB if we use the exact same configuration. I want the free ram to be 1 GB at most, why pay for 8 GB ram if I'm going to use a fraction of it? What optimizations should I attempt? I know about harddisk I/O bottlenecks, I have two SATA drives in the system, and a SAS drive dedicated to mysql, that's all we can afford currently. All mysql databases are for SMF forums, and currently using MyISAM tables. Switching to another storage engine is a possibility, if it won't create problems in restarts and hot backups.

Subversion Server RAM Usage
I have a low traffic VPS, with fairly limited resources (most notably only 256mb RAM). This runs fine for what's currently being hosted - one low traffic site (with 1-10 users on at any time, usually 2 or 3), and several other essentially dead sites. Everything runs smoothly, and generally RAM usage remains below the 200mb mark. However, I've been contempating setting up a Subversion server on the same VPS, and I'm unsure if this will top it over the limit. Does anyone here have any experience running a SVN server? How memory hungry is it? If I do set this up, it won't be very active, with a couple of checkouts a day, and a max of 2 or 3 users connecting at any one point, more often than not no one will be connected. Can I do this with the resource limitations listed above, or should I start looking at alternatives?

RAM Usage: Dedicated Server Vs. VPS
I have never rented a dedi before but have used and continue to use VPS for my websites. With a hostinabox VPS with lxadmin control panel and apache for web serving I have seen idle ram usage at around 100MB. My question is am I going to see a similar amount if I move to a dedicated server ? I ask this because I remember reading somewhere that dedis have a higher RAM usage by the OS compared to VPS. So does a dedi at idle use more RAM than a VPS at idle?

More RAM Or CPU Power For The Database Server
Given the choice which is more beneficial. Some of the things I've read say Database servers use up more RAM and others say they use up more CPU power. I'm just not sure. Can anyone comment intelligently regarding that as well?

Optimizing MySQL On A Busy Server (4 Gigs Of Ram)
it's getting to the point where I need to optimize MySQL to better handle a busy server. These days it seems MySQL is using 30% - 60% CPU almost constantly. But, the good news is that I've got 4 gigs of ram on this box and their seems to be an access of 600mb free constantly throughout the day. Is it possible to tweak MySQL to a little more RAM dependent and take some of the load off the CPU? It seems MySQL wont go over 300mb of ram at any given time.. I'm already working on optimizing the SQL Querys on the web page itself. my.cnf (4.1.22-standard): # Default to using old password format for compatibility with mysql 3.x # clients (those using the mysqlclient10 compatibility package). # old_passwords=1 # [mysql.server] # user=mysql # basedir=/var/lib # [mysqld_safe] # err-log=/var/log/mysqld.log # pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid [mysqld] datadir=/var/lib/mysql socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock safe-show-database old_passwords back_log = 75 max_connections = 600 table_cache = 128 thread_cache = 32 wait_timeout = 60 interactive_timeout = 80 connect_timeout = 60 tmp_table_size = 64M max_heap_table_size = 64M max_allowed_packet = 64M max_connect_errors = 10 read_rnd_buffer_size = 524288 bulk_insert_buffer_size = 64M query_cache_limit = 8M query_cache_size = 100M query_cache_type = 1 default-storage-engine = MyISAM local-infile=0 thread_concurrency = 4 [mysql.server] user=mysql basedir=/var/lib [mysqld_safe] err-log=/var/log/mysqld.log pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid open_files_limit = 8192 [mysqldump] quick set-variable = max_allowed_packet=16M [myisamchk] set-variable = key_buffer=256M set-variable = sort_buffer=64M set-variable = read_buffer=16M

CPU Load Low, Server Slow, Need More Ram
My server gets 300 - 600 concurrent connections to http port 80, has a CPU load of 1 - 2%, has practically all RAM of 1 GB used, is running apache 2 and centos 5. It tends to get slow and when I ban IPs that use many connections to my server (raping it), it becomes fast again. But soon after that new ******* users come which I again ban and the process repeats itself I'm starting to think that maybe I just don't have enough RAM to handle them because it seems at least some of those users are legit. I don't however have even that much content that needs to be cached so I'm not sure what good RAM would do but perhaps apache just needs more.
