What To Chose Intel Core 2 Quad+Intel Core 2 Duo Or Harpertown
We are hosting our software system which do calculation and file manipulation. Now we have Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 and would like to get Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 to increase our system performance. Also we have other choice, get Intel Xeon E5405 Harpertown 2.0GHz to replace two above. I think it is better to have one server box because one box easy to manage than two. Also Harpertown is much faster than these two together. What is your opinion?

As I understand I would move from a two core to a single core CPU. In the first move letter they send me, they where saying I would get a CPU plus, plus 1 GB mem more.

Core 2 Duo Vs Dual Xeon
How would processor performace compare assuming the harddrives were the same and the amount of ram was the same? For example, how would a system with older dual xeon 2.4 or 2.8 cpus compare to Intel Core2 Duo E4300 socket 775, 2x 1.8Ghz/1M L2 system? I am guessing that the Intel Core2 Duo would win, but by how much? I am sure this is hard to compare since ram speeds are different as well, but hopefully someone can make an estimate.

Core 2 Duo 1333 MHz FSB Boards
We are starting to look for new motherboards for LGA775 1333 MHz FSB Intel Core 2 Duo chips and I'm wondering what boards other people are using. Support for the new Core 2 Duo E6xxx/E8xxx series chips is a must. Our qualifications for boards is that they must work out of the box (or very near to out of the box) with CentOS/RHEL 5 and must fit in a SuperMicro SC512 case with no modification (meaning: working NIC & low profile audio).

32 Bit Xen Guest On X86_64 EL5 Node
Let's make this straight, I have this vps, which is pending cancellation in a few days. Hardware Node = EL 5 x86_64, Vz = Xen I asked my provider for 32 bit centos, I even rebuilt it, but my "uname --all" still Quote: Linux xxx.xxx.com 2.6.18-128.1.10.el5xen #1 SMP Thu May 7 11:07:18 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux so I opened a ticket asking about the vps arch. The provider have told me that to run a vps 32 bit guest, what you have to do is (?) +++++++++++++++++++++++++ yum clean all echo i686-redhat-linux > /etc/rpm/platform +++++++++++++++++++++++++ so yum will exclude any x86_64 packages. The provider has told me also that my "uname" display x86_64 because the hardware node is 64 bit. Is this true ? I'm no linux or vps guru, but that's doesnt feel right at all. This has cause me some issues especially with kernel-headers and some program failed to compile. So, is it possible to run a 32 bit OS as xen guest inside 64 bit node?

Experience With Power Distribution
How would you distribute power to your racks? What we are panning on doing is piping directly out of the fuse panel down to the raised floor. Inside the floor there will be flexible romex that feeds up into the racks. Once fed into the racks it is then piped into junction boxes which are attached to a piece of unistrut. There will be a ton of outlets so each server has two outlets, one of course being for backup. Does anyone see anything wrong with this? What about UL 60950-1 standards?

Perpetually Updateable Linux Distribution
Would anyone have any ideas which Linux distribution can be updated the easiest, as in 2 years later, I can run a command or something that will bring it up to the most recent release without having to be fully reinstalled. I will be working with Xen soon, and I know that is more friendly for that type of thing than something like OpenVZ or Virtuozzo could be. I say this after seeing the 2 releases per year idea that Fedora seems to think is fun, and how much work it has been for people to keep up to date. For hosting, its hard to deal with uprooting every so often and migrating to a new system just to keep up to date. I would love to hear some perspectives on this from anyone experienced in this area.

Multiple Server File Distribution
We're running multiple cPanel-based Linux boxes now, and are looking for a simple way to distribute our basic system files across all boxes. No important low-level files, just the basic cron job bash scripts we run on all servers etc. This would also be a help for syncing these shared files across to new boxes we bring online. Does anybody have any recommendations for a simple file distribution system for this purpose? Ideally it would run as a cron job rsyncing the files across. It may just be easier for us to write our own script for the purpose, but thought I should ask if there was anything off the shelf

Choosing 32bit Versus 64bit OS
I'm in the process of preparing to install CentOS 5 on my server, and was wondering whether most people recommend going with the 64bit version or sticking with 32bit. My server's CPU is 64-bit capable (Xeon 3060 at SoftLayer), and I have previously run CentOS 4.4 64bit on it, though I did have some struggles from time to time getting things to work (following setup guides that tend to assume 32bit more often than not). I'll be running just a standard setup of PHP 5, MySQL 5, and Apache 2, powering several moderate-traffic sites that run on the Drupal CMS (e.g. about 7000-10000 visitors per day total, though hopefully more in the future of course). I don't plan on running a control panel other than Webmin, though I might get DirectAdmin or similar in the future to make hosting some friends/clients a bit simpler. Will going with 64bit offer any worthwhile advantage with this setup?
