Server Down, Reason With Logs?

Server Going Slow For No Apparent Reason
Jan 22, 2008I have a dual processor, dual core server with 12GB memory.. It uses less than 4% CPU utilization and less than 5% memory utilization, but for some reason It's really slow to load sites...
I know this isn't much information, but would any have any ideas as to what could cause the slow speed?
If is anyone is available to look at it, I'll pay you (obviously).
Is The Bandwidth The Reason Server Prices Are High Or
Sep 12, 2008Like if you try to make your own server, it would cost a few thousand right? Or bought one from IBM or something. If you rent a server, it could cost you like double that I notice or even more in a period of a year.
I was looking at the prices of Xeon 5420 and they are like only 400 or something. Motherboard, ram, hdd's shouldn't amount to too much right?
And companies are charging like 50 bucks a month for a 2 gigs of ram.
Or am I actually looking at this wrong and actually am looking at desktop components? So is bandwidth the cost for these prices? In the long run aren't people being ripped off?
Trace Reason For Spike Load On Shared Server
Jun 19, 2009I have a shared server (root access) using Cpanel / Centos with suphp enabled.
Twice this week the sever's load skyrocketed and was unable to login to trace teh cause, had to reboot instead.
After reboot, I went to whm > CPU/Memory/MySQL Usage and saw nothing in red aside netstat (21% cpu). I'm not sure if this is the cause, but how can I trace the absolute user or script causing this spike?

Jan 28, 2007we have dual xeon linux server redhat 9 / cpanel
we have a strange crash .... you cant access ftp /ssh / httpd ...
i need to request a server reboot to get access ... and everything after this run ok...
i have check message log .. nothing in it for example
10:20:10 ftp log
11:15:60 rebootlog
also the same in httpd log ...
so as you see there is a gab between the server crash till reboot....
this happen 3 times till now ...

Jun 10, 2007My server is Fedora Linux. I access it via Putty using SSH.
I find it a pain to look through the logs using PICO since it won't scroll and I'm a slight linux mainly windows guy.
Is there a way to either copy the whole log at once over to notepad or something or to download the file to my local PC?
Then I could go through it much easier.
I tried using copy in putty but that only copies the screen and these logs can be huge sometimes.
How To Transfer Awstats Logs From Old Server To New Server
Oct 7, 2008We had some issues with old server hence we migrated some websites to another new server from our old server.
We did a backup of all existing webfiles and database from old server and transferred the same to new server, a manual transfer few weeks ago.
However, we were not able to backup our awstats logs for this domains, can someone guide how to transfer awstats from old server to new server?
We cannot perform an automated transfer from old server to new server now, is there some way we can migrate our awstats from old server to new server for this domains?
Delete Access And Error Logs On Server
Jun 28, 2008After a full year of operation, I think I need to delete some log files. What types of files can I safely delete (and is deletion the best option, i.e. will the files be regenerated from zero length?)
For example, my server's error_log file is 193 Mb and my access_log file is 14 Mb. Can I "rm" them both?
Are there any other such files I can safely delete that occupy space on the server?

Shared Hosting With Access To Server Logs
Mar 23, 2007=We are trying to integrate eBay.com feeds into our site and for some reason we are not able to get expected results on current shared hosting server. We tested the same on another server and we are able to get the right results. And the current host doesn't allow us to access the server logs unless we upgrade the account to VPS and Dedicated server. But we are pretty new to launch the site, hence we don't want to buy any VPS or Dedicated server for now. Now we are looking for another shared hosting who can offer to access server logs.

Spammers Trying To Connect To Mail Server & Filling Logs

Is there any way to disallow connections to SEND mail FROM my server to specific IPs? (Similarly to how you can limit connections to sshd from certain IPs)
I realize I cannot disable everything completely, as yahoo and the likes will have to connect to deliver mail. But no one of any use is going to try and connect to send mail, but a spammer.
No one has gotten in and abused it as of yet (knock on wood), but SMTP is being restarted at random and I can only imagine that this is being caused by one of these scumbags probably ddos'ing me. It takes eons to browse these logs, even if they restart via logrotate periodically!
Reason For High DNS TTL
Jun 10, 2008Is there a reason to set a high TTL for DNS? Like the standard is a few days.I set mine to 10 minutes. So whenever I do a change its propagated within 10 minutes. Is there a reason this would be bad? I realize it means more queries to my server, but 10 minutes is still rather long, not like thats going to totally hammer my server,

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Save Access Logs Of Websites On External Server
Oct 24, 2014I want to save the access logs of our websites on an external server. If I do this now with the default setup, the gets overwritten every day. The desired file name format whould be: websitedomain-tld-access-2014-10-24.log
How can I tell Plesk to do this and how can I make sure the statistics keep working?
On our other servers we use rotatelogs for this.

Slackware Linux Machine Hangs For No Apparent Reason
Jun 27, 2009I have a dedicated machine collocated at some hosting provider and after a while (14 days or so, but timeframe is not constant) it hangs for no apparent reason. It happened 2 times already. Nothing in the logs (it logs everything), nothing at all.
Before the commission the machine was running for a month without any problems.
The first time it happened the tech guy plugged in monitor and keyboard and could not see anything on the display. Before that machine was not loaded with any traffic, nobody should have actually known it is there (except for some DNS traffic). It took some 20 days of uptime.
The second time it happened was yesterday, after some 15 days of uptime.
I suspect hardware malfunction because I have 2 "identical" (OS & progs, not the hardware) systems running without any problems. It is an HP DL380 G5 machine, the problematic one.
New Hard Drive Deleted Over 1200 Videos For No Reason
Apr 14, 2008I got a new hard drive. After just completing the wonderful instructions on how to rename video files on the server, the new hard drive has just "misplaced" over 1200 of my exclusive videos!
I didnt erase anything, but now the hard drive can only see upto a certain letter, all after that has gone.........is there any way this hard drive can restore these files? its getting ridiculous now

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Fail2ban Blocks Courierimap And Postfix For No Reason
Dec 3, 2014we use CentOS Linux 7.0.1406 (Core) Plesk Version 12.0.18 Update #26 I got reports of several users on my system, and i can confirm this myself, that fail2ban is blocking courier imap and postfix connections when i try to connect to the Plesk Server with Outlook 2013 and theBat and the Apple Mac Mail Client.
I used the correct login information but fail2ban blocked the IPs for no obvious reason:

I disabled the two jails now and it works perfectly. But why is fail2ban blocking valid requests ? I tried it myself and i did not enter a wrong password or something. MaxRetry is 5 so this should not be a problem. The problem is not affecting all users but just a few. However all of them are using correct credentials so i dont understand why they are being blocked at all.
