Is there a reason to set a high TTL for DNS? Like the standard is a few days.I set mine to 10 minutes. So whenever I do a change its propagated within 10 minutes. Is there a reason this would be bad? I realize it means more queries to my server, but 10 minutes is still rather long, not like thats going to totally hammer my server,
Like if you try to make your own server, it would cost a few thousand right? Or bought one from IBM or something. If you rent a server, it could cost you like double that I notice or even more in a period of a year.
I was looking at the prices of Xeon 5420 and they are like only 400 or something. Motherboard, ram, hdd's shouldn't amount to too much right?
And companies are charging like 50 bucks a month for a 2 gigs of ram.
Or am I actually looking at this wrong and actually am looking at desktop components? So is bandwidth the cost for these prices? In the long run aren't people being ripped off?
We currently have a server that has Windows 2003 and were wondering the advantages of upgrading to R2? How I spend the extra money for an upgrade? Please no linux comments

I have a dual processor, dual core server with 12GB memory.. It uses less than 4% CPU utilization and less than 5% memory utilization, but for some reason It's really slow to load sites...
I know this isn't much information, but would any have any ideas as to what could cause the slow speed?
If is anyone is available to look at it, I'll pay you (obviously).
I'm having my first DDOS attack. Do people DDos servers for no reason? Beacause they are attacking an IP on a server that have not had any sites or any use on it for 4 years.
I have a shared server (root access) using Cpanel / Centos with suphp enabled.
Twice this week the sever's load skyrocketed and was unable to login to trace teh cause, had to reboot instead.
After reboot, I went to whm > CPU/Memory/MySQL Usage and saw nothing in red aside netstat (21% cpu). I'm not sure if this is the cause, but how can I trace the absolute user or script causing this spike?
I have a dedicated machine collocated at some hosting provider and after a while (14 days or so, but timeframe is not constant) it hangs for no apparent reason. It happened 2 times already. Nothing in the logs (it logs everything), nothing at all.
Before the commission the machine was running for a month without any problems.
The first time it happened the tech guy plugged in monitor and keyboard and could not see anything on the display. Before that machine was not loaded with any traffic, nobody should have actually known it is there (except for some DNS traffic). It took some 20 days of uptime.
The second time it happened was yesterday, after some 15 days of uptime.
I suspect hardware malfunction because I have 2 "identical" (OS & progs, not the hardware) systems running without any problems. It is an HP DL380 G5 machine, the problematic one.
I got a new hard drive. After just completing the wonderful instructions on how to rename video files on the server, the new hard drive has just "misplaced" over 1200 of my exclusive videos!
I didnt erase anything, but now the hard drive can only see upto a certain letter, all after that has gone.........is there any way this hard drive can restore these files? its getting ridiculous now
PRODUCT, Plesk for Windows VERSION 11.5 latest update VERSION OF MICROUPDATE 11.5.30 Actualizar #39, OPERATING SYSTEM Windows 2008 Server Suddently with no apparent reason, MYSQL stops and Ihave to go to the panel and restart it.
Every Morning I have to restart MySQL thru the control panel in remote console of windows..Works all day long, and then stops at night..Should work as always did, for several months I did not even reboot the server, no I have to reboot the server to see if that fixes the problem. Latest windows update, latest Plesk for windows update, but I have the feeling that with the latest microupdate something has broken,
we use CentOS Linux 7.0.1406 (Core) Plesk Version 12.0.18 Update #26 I got reports of several users on my system, and i can confirm this myself, that fail2ban is blocking courier imap and postfix connections when i try to connect to the Plesk Server with Outlook 2013 and theBat and the Apple Mac Mail Client.
I used the correct login information but fail2ban blocked the IPs for no obvious reason:
Code:
2014-12-03 12:46:57,908 fail2ban.actions[920]: WARNING [plesk-postfix] Ban 82.134.94.102 2014-12-03 12:46:58,049 fail2ban.actions[920]: WARNING [plesk-courierimap] Ban 82.134.94.102 I disabled the two jails now and it works perfectly. But why is fail2ban blocking valid requests ? I tried it myself and i did not enter a wrong password or something. MaxRetry is 5 so this should not be a problem. The problem is not affecting all users but just a few. However all of them are using correct credentials so i dont understand why they are being blocked at all.
I've got a problem with an SQL query that is behaving badly. Its probably really obvious, but I can't see the problem!
I have a table with 3 fields:
Code:
money bigint(20) income int(12) userID mediumint(7)
I have a row that has a negative money and a value of 0 for income. When I update the money value to add "0" to it, nothing happens (as expected). When I update the money field to add the income field (which is equal to 0) to it, MySQL flips the sign to make the money field positive.
The following queries show the problem:
Code:
mysql> SELECT money, income from users where userID=327961; +----------------------+--------+ | money | income | +----------------------+--------+ | -9223372036854775807 | 0 | +----------------------+--------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec)
mysql> SELECT money, income from users where userID=327961; +----------------------+--------+ | money | income | +----------------------+--------+ | -9223372036854775807 | 0 | +----------------------+--------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec)
mysql> UPDATE `users` SET money = money + income WHERE userID =327961; Query OK, 1 row affected, 1 warning (0.00 sec) Rows matched: 1 Changed: 1 Warnings: 1
mysql> SELECT money, income from users where userID=327961; +---------------------+--------+ | money | income | +---------------------+--------+ | 9223372036854775807 | 0 | +---------------------+--------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec)
mysql> Notice that there is no negative sign after the third select!!
So, we are saying that executing an update where 0 is specified in the query results in the correct action but if you take the 0 from another field it takes the negative sign away...
This for various reasons is a rather urgent problem. This problem has only appeared after upgrading from MySQL 4.0 to MySQl 5.1. This problem does not occur in MySQL 4.1.
I got 5 wordpress and 5 statics website on this server and 100 visitors by 24H00 each day.
Question 1 : Why the memory is so low and the swap so high ? Question 2 : Why i don't find high usage process in top command ? Question 3 How can i resolve this problem ?
I thought this problem was fixed in Plesk 11.5 but I'm still getting the following backup warnings in Plesk 12..."For security reason backup is performed on behalf of subscription system user...."
My phpbb forum creates cache files which have apache ownership and Plesk backup manager gives warnings that it cannot backup the files due to ownership errors.
I have searched for days for a solution without success. If I change the permissions to owner instead of apache the forums don't function correctly.
Is this a Plesk bug that is still evident in Plesk 12?
I have a site that is eating up my server resources and need to know what the best solution for this is. I'm thinking of getting another server just for mysql but do not know what specs the server should be to handle the current traffic/database load and have the site run smoothly without slowing down to a snail's pace.
An alternative is to get another server just for the videos being served and leave the database and html on the current server. This is where I'm stuck and don't know what route to take with this.
I've attached screenshots of top and bandwidth usage per day. Hopefully with this information you could tell me if I need another server or if there are any things I can do to the current server to help things move faster.
I am running in a High load problem lately. I have one of those cheap 1and1 servers which was running fine until 2 weeks ago. Once I rebooted accidentaly, it did not come back with some unrepairable kernel errors and I had to re-image it.
I chose to reimage the server with CentOS 5, for better support. The new re-image worked fine for some days, at least so I thought and now I am having high loads. The server crashes if not monitored every moment as the load is unpredictable.
Just a restart of the Apache will bring the server back to normality, but I am not sure if it is apache or some other script to be blamed. I have beeing monitoring through apache server-status, but I cannot organize something unusual in the high load moments.

So my server is "unresponsive" for abour 18 hours, burst net didnt answer my tickets and I dont know what to do. Ive been with this setup for almost 5 months with no problems, No changes have been made to hardware or software.
lsphp is my webserver (litespeed). The sleeping processes are my SHOUTcast servers.
The thing I am concerned about is the "94.3%ni". This is slowing down my server completely and I am not too sure of what it is. Can anyone shed any light on this?
My VPS holds about 80 domains and low-use accounts.
Every night, from around 1.30am, the load suddenly skyrockets and will usually be around 5 to 10 for a few hours. Occasionally it'll spike to 30+ for a few minutes.
I had some antispam software running, and a couple of other packages (mail queues, mail manage etc), so I disabled all of that and removed all the crontab entries etc.
It's not really made any difference.
I can see the load stats going back 8 hours, as part of the ASSP spam package (I've just left the ASSP server load cron running just so I can continue monitoring it!)
Can the apparent load on my VPS be caused by other VPS's on the same node?? So in reality, my load is fine but is being affected by other people's VPS's?
I hope that makes sense. I'm 99% sure that my VPS is 'clean' (in so far as cron entries)
I'm asking the question because I took a second VPS on the same node and that one too has high loads overnight when there's nothing running on it (ie, no add-on software, no Cpanel accounts added)
I have a VPS with LXadmin control panel and 1024 Ram.
the memory always 333-450 but now it is more than 800 and the VPS stopped I restarted it many times but after restarting it the memory gone crazy again.
So, how to know what causes high load and eating my Memory?
Anyone know of any good/cheap high-bandwidth VPS providers? Don't need anything crazy as far as processing power or RAM (512MB with no burstable is fine). Sorta like Slicebox's budget servers, which I've had good experience with.
To e upfront, the box will be used for a little bit of testing, etc. but mostly to seed the latest Windows 7 builds :p. Don't think Microsoft minds all that much...Win7 requires a legitimate beta key to activate (which I have, and I'm not giving anyone mine) and it's a whole lot cheap for them to let people download over BitTorrent than Akamai, which they normally use.
So, any ideas? EU isn't out of the question...anywhere with a lot of/unmetered bandwidth for cheap, and a VPS that's reliable + has at least 512MB of memory for prices comparable (or slightly lower than) to Slicebox.
