I want to start up my web server again. I have Windows XP hosting my web server right now. and, it's slow.
Should i stick with Windows, run IIS and use httpZip from Port80?
I really like microsoft, and don't want to change and adapt to something else.
give me advice
Or, should I run Linux
I would run Linux on it, but I don't know how.
And they have different version of Linux. Example Redhat, Ubuntu etc.
Which one should I go for?
Also, what do I do if I have a netgear ethernet card? Is that Linux? Is it compaitable with Redhat?
And last question, what do I use for security?
I'm a hacker, yeah.. I know what all people can do to websites. How do I stop them?
DoSing, Cross Scripting, XML Attacks, MySql Injection.. Etc.
If a linux fan can respond, that would be nice.

Mirror A Site Running Server 2003 Web Services
Mirror a site running server 2003 web services I'm a network admin at a university and one of the departments is hosting their site on their own personal server running Server 2003 and Windows Web services. They've been asking me how would they go about mirroring their site in the event of a power loss intentional or otherwise. There are times during holiday periods where building maintenance will shut off power but they still want students to be able to get to their site. So they want to set up a mirror on another server in an office offsite. I've done some research on the subject but I haven't been able to find anything dealing with mirroring Microsoft hosted sites.

Media Server Running Windows Server 2003 Std: Yes Or No
Most people probably run Linux on their media servers, but since I don't know much about Linux and the media server we have is unmanaged, I was wondering how you guys feel about running Windows Server 2003 Std on a media server instead of Linux. We'll only be using the server to host Flash video files (.flv) and we'll be serving those vids on websites hosted on other servers, resulting in approx. 50,000-100,000 media views per day (filesizes range from approx. 5MB to 10MB). We don't want to run Windows Media Services, just a Web server (IIS6) and have the Flash video players on the external websites take care of the streaming/downloading part.

Running A Game On A Server
I'm a flight Sim Buffer, I use Microsoft flight simulator X Delux, I also have real flying hours under my belt too. My Question is, what would I need to have FSX running 365 days of the year with upto 100 Connections at all times from it, plus teamSpeak? Should I Rent a gaming server and allow my costs to increase, which taking into account I have three children, would be quite hard? Or is there a Gaming server service that I can use? i have a strange problem at my server , i hosted 1 wesite ( forum script with no plugins ) when my traffic consuption reache to 25mbs the server running very slow for hours although the load avarage is very normal 1-2 Iowait 3% ram consumption 8-10Gb my uplink port 1Gb and of course my DC said the connection is normal with no limitation the server specs are good Quad procs 7200 ,16Gb ram ,15K SCSI speed connections reache to 2000-2500 per seconds

Running A DNS Server
I currently have one dedicated server and four VPSs all using Plesk and all having their own name servers controlled by Plesk. What I'd like to do is consolidate everything so all my sites use one set of name servers. I'm a PHP developer (and will be developing my own front end), and only have limited knowledge of administrating a server, so first of all if anyone has done this before and made mistakes in the process, please could you share them with me so I can avoid making them? Secondly, I would like to use a MySQL database for storing the DNS info - I've found a tutorial at [url]which I'd like to use - could someone who knows what they're talking about have a skim through this and reassure me that everything there is correct and up to date (the article was written in early 2006 - just checking nothing in the world of DNS has changed since)? Running Exchange Server
can someone here help me setup/configure exchange server? I really have no idea but interested in doing so on my dedicated server. I just want to know how to say, setup email accounts/web access. Right now, just installed WS2003 EE R2 with updates and installing other things too like SQL Server 2005/AV/ISA Server I take it I need to make the machine into a domain? I have 2 IP Addresses assigned to me. and I have 2 domains, so I'm thinking about configuring each domain for an IP Address. I would ideally like to have email addresses for both domains but going to test it on 1 domain first before proceeding onwards. In the future I'm thinking of running a web server from my residential house. I currently have rogers cable , but they do not allow you to run a server from their residential internet connection. Does anyone run a server from their house? What kind of internet connection do you have? I'm guessing most people don't do this because they find out it cost way to much to get a special connection ran to their house. Colocation might be the only way to go.

If i want to run e-mail server on my machine are those thing all that i need: 1) Separate machine running Linux + UPS 2) Internet connection - ADSL/WiFi (what is minimal acceptable down/up speed for running server normally?) 3) Domain name + one or two static IP addresses acquired form my ISP 4) Email server and webmail software 5) One man that know everything about server security and settings. Why i want to run server at my home is because i have two spear machines with lot of HD space which can be perfect for this use. Only problem could be internet connection... Running FTP And HTTP Server From PC
I am trying to install a FTP Server in my computer so that I can simply login into my own computer to grab important files at work... since carrying laptop and loosing flash drives are becoming annoying . In my home computer I have Linksys Router, and Verizon as my ISP (blocks port 80, 21 I believe). Since Verizon blocks those ports the configuration has become a nightmare. Using BulletProof FTP Server I made the FTP Server listen to port 5000. And in my router's forwarding section I opened the port 5000, and made it listen to 192.168.1.100 (Port Range Forwarding, TCP UDP both). I did the same for my Apache server and made it to work with port 443. When I access [url] the web server loads up fine. But when I try [url] it doesn't load up, where 1.2.3.4 is my IP. Mail Server Up And Running But Inaccessible
I can't check my mails using POP3 and Outlook Express. If I do a 'telnet hostname_address 110', I get the MTA welcome message, however when I try to access with Outlook Express, it takes like 30 secs, then it says it's taking time and asks if I want to wait more or cancel, I click "Wait", then after a few secs it says the waiting time expired. Do you know what may be causing it?

Can I Install Hardware RAID After Server Is Up And Running
I have several servers that have a HighPoint RocketRaid 1520 SATA raid card. I have recently discovered that this card requires drivers in the OS to actually take advantage of the raid functionality. Well, it seems the drivers were never installed. So I essentially do not currently have a raid setup, even though I have a pair of HD's in each of the servers affected. Now, I do have a Windows server that automatically loaded the driver, but the Linux boxes do not have the driver it seems. The instructions for this card state that the driver is installed at the time of OS installation. I bought these servers when I acquired a host a couple of years ago and obviously they weren't setup properly. So here's my question, I am thinking of trying to install this raid driver on the affected servers now. They have been running for a couple of years this way and I don't want to screw something up. Is this something that I can do at this point without going back to reinstalling the OS, etc? Can the raid driver be installed after the fact here like I'm thinking of doing? Should I proceed with trying to get this RocketRaid card to work or would I better off buying hardware raid cards that are configured outside of the OS? And if I should go with the hardware level raid, what card do you all recommend? I'm running RHE3 on these servers and they are P4's with 1GB of RAM.

Current Status My main website is a dating/magazine/community site. I use server ONE for as my main server for: nameserver mail apache - php mysql This server uses FreeBSD with CPanel/WHM Server ONE load averages are about 1-1.5 A year ago I got another server (server TWO) to host a php chat script, and unload the main server. This server hasn't a domain attached to it and I'm using it through its IP. This server runs: apache - php mysql And it also uses FreeBSD but with Webmin. The load averages for Server TWO are about 0.20. Recently I transfered all the images of Server ONE to server TWO, with a good result for loads on server ONE. What I want to doSome users of the site complain that they can't see any images of the site due to IP based images src. So I want to set up a redirection so images.example.com to redirect transparently to the other server. When I tried to setup a subdomain redirection through Cpanel, I just got again the IP of the other server. Who can this be done? If I must setup DNS stuff in server TWO, in order to achive it, can I use it also as spare nameservers for the domains hosted on Server ONE? What else is easy to transfer to server TWO in order to unload server ONE?

Here, I am not hosting any ‘foreign business interests’ or associating with any other ‘hostile networks’. I am needing to create many sub-nets, with 3 to 5 WAN’s inbound and outbound. I have a ‘research sub-net’ needing special considerations and will link associates/contractors by VPN. The product-line will also require Radius Server(s). Plus more details and requirements that make the whole project most complicated. (Thanks to ‘leeware’ for this beginning theme) 1.0 Objective: Building a 30-50 Server facility: I checked my records and made this decision 2 - ˝ months ago. Since then I have acquired 28 servers, an internet security device, two 3com’s, two 4-port kvm’s, a few small Cisco switches and a host of power related stuff. 2.0 Justification for Building vs leasing: Control. Costs. Open options. Unique demands more easily appreciated by myself as I am the one possessing the vision. Choosing who I work with as I do the hiring/contracting or initiate associations. We are generally molded by personal experiences and these set-up our prejudices. I am certainly no exception. My experiences with hosts generated an excellent introduction to the wide world of websites/control panels etc and some products that support it. But the too often cryptic communications, some surprise costs due to my ignorance and that vulnerable ‘boxed in’ feeling made me wonder… 2.1 What is your rational for building vs leasing? One of my major ‘cross the line’ rational came when I discovered I could buy a used server each month for a similar cost of leasing one. Next, were all my own confounded ‘special circumstances’ that kept cropping up and of course these were not the fault of any hosting company. Lastly technology came to my street in the form of good multiple pipes and my zoning is acceptable because I am off a major highway. 3.0 Business Objectives: My business objectives center around a very long-run project that I have already long ago completed and keep updated to viability. And I would rather keep that subject to another venue. 4.0 Budgetary Information: I have enough ‘resources’ to pull it off. 4.2 What is your operating budget (How much money do you plan to spend on an ongoing basis to keep the place running for 12-24 months?) Same as previous and I will note that ‘time and attention’ is keenly important. 4.3 More importantly, where is this money going to come from? If from investors they generally require a sound business plan. I require a sound business plan and have it. 5.0 Return on Investment: Accomplish goals on and on… 5.1 After you account for the initial capital expense to get everything up and running + your on going operating costs, how long will it take you to make back your initial investment and then reach profitability? These processes are also almost always a search engine. On the rare case I see them running on other domains on the same server they're always on Wordpress sites. The longer the processes run, the more processor/memory they use, the more they slow the server down. It seems to have just started in the past few weeks, I've had the site there for a couple years.

Running BSD Server But Windows Box Keeps Displaying Login Prompt All The Time
I run a FreeBSD box as my file and webserver I use a DynDns domain name and run the little update program. But anyway when ever I use my lappy and when ever my lappy makes an outgoing connection a login prompt comes up asking to connect to my domain. It used to just say my public IP but I edited hosts.rc so now it says my domain on the prompt. Is this somthing to do with samba or apache on BSD or is windows detecting that I host my own or what.

I have a company that wants to stream some live events via Windows Media Encoder/Windows Media Player. I believe the best route is to use a WMS, stream to the WMS, then the CDN would pull from there for events. Can someone help me explain a Windows Media Server versus a web server? Web Hosting On Same Server As Game Server
Does a typical LAMP setup for a high enough traffic site(s) take enough resources to affect the performance of a game server? (we'll say 1million page views per day) I'm speaking of say, 2MB of ram, dual xeon 2.8 type machine, with IDE drives. Nothing too fancy. 1 milion page views per day may be pushing it, so what about say, 200 per day? Just wondering if anyone has a setup like this and how it fairs out at the game server end. I'm thinking of moving my websites over to my game server + add more sites over time, but don't want it to lag the game. I know as a fact bandwidth would not be the issue, I'm thinking more ram/cpu. The game I host (Ultima Online) uses very little bandwidth with even 30+ people online. I use less then 1% of my link capacity at most times. I've seen it spike to 5% and that's most likely when I was downloading data.

Network Web Server And Database Server Together
I am going to setup our new database server (call it beta) in our data center. Previously we only had one server (call it alpha) which was web, email, ftp, dns, and database. Beta is taking over alphas database duties. We have a Sonicwall router/firewall as our main connection access point. I am trying to decicde if we should simply connect alpha and beta together locally via a gigabit crossover cable, or if I should connect beta into our sonicwall router/firewall. Beta does not need to be outside accessible at all. So if I connect beta to the sonicwall I simply would not open any ports. What do you guys think is best for performance and the overall right way to do it.

DB Server And Web Server In Different Data Centers
DHas anyone got experience of having a web server and db server setup where the servers are in different datacenters? Is this a viable solution or would the performance of sites suffer too much due to the added latency? The only other problem I can think of is additional bandwith usage but that's not a major worry. Reason I ask is beacause I've found and excellent deal for a DB server and would like to keep my current server for the front end..

Media Server Or Web Server + NAS
I currently use a Dedicated Server: Quad Core, 8GB Ram, 3TB HDD as a Media server which streams video clips etc... on my websites. But Im moving my sites to a UK colo, I have been advised that its better to have Multiple Web Servers connected to a NAS / Storage Server? As I dont want to have multiple servers doing seperate jobs I want 1 cluster e.g. Web Servers + Load Balancers + Storage + SQL I Purchased a HP StorageWorks NAS 1200s 1TB LINK: [url] Will this do the job? Or should I use this as backup storage and get something else?

How To Setup A WEB Server Which Talks With DB A Server
I have been shooting away a lot of questions on these forums lately, but you guys have been very helpful. Thanks. My problem is this. We are going to get rackspace. Then we are going to purchase two servers. The first (WEB) is a httpd, dns, ftp, smtp, pop3 server. The second (DB) is purely a database server which will run mysql and mssql. The first server (WEB) runs a asp/php applications that need to connect and talk with the database (DB) server. I was thinking of only connection the WEB server to the physical internet through the co-location drop. Then connecting the WEB and DB server directly via a CAT6 cable. Both servers will have gigabit NIC cards. Then in theory in the asp/php applications all I have to do, is point them to the local ip address of the DB server as this should work. Is this a good solution? Will speed be an issue, the delay from talking to the WEB server and talking to the DB server? I was thinking this is more secure, because the WEB server is the only machine physically connected to the internet, the DB server is not. Though, is it true, if hackers compromise the web server, they then would be able to compromise the DB server as well via the WEB server? I am open to suggestions though, and better ways of setting this up.

I own a file hosting site. The site is powered by 2 servers - 1 front end web and database server, and 1 where all the files are stored. I'm facing a problem that uploading and downloading often failed. Connections to mysql would timeout. Has it to do with mysql settings or because the file server is located at a distance from the sql server?
