Changing SSH Port

May 16, 2007

I'm trying to change the ssh port on one of my servers, I have edited the sshd_config file and ssh_config. Changed the port, then enabled the port on APF. Restarted both APF and SSH.

Tried logging in via the port I specified, would not let me. Tried the default port, logged in fine. Why wont it change to the port I specify?

Port Speed Conversion

Feb 14, 2007

how to translate this into what would be needed in port speed to cover this server if converted to colo, in Mbps ? Is it 4.5?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The statistics were last updated Wednesday, 14 February 2007 at 10:50,
at which time 'XXXXXXXXX' had been up for 362 days, 17:47:15.
Last 30 days usage (Metered 95%): 4670.57 kb/sec
Last 30 days usage (Metered 95%): 1477797.53 MBytes
Total Utilization ( Last 30 days ): [In 637187 MBytes] [Out 65140 MBytes]

Max Speed: 12.5 MBytes/s
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, is there a real need to be on a burstable connection, or are flat rates OK most of the time? Just looking for the advantages and disadvantages of it.

Changing SSHd Port With Firewall Installed

Jul 13, 2008

I have a friend who usually manages my server, but he's been hard to contact, and these forums are officially my best friend

I figured out how to change the sshd config, and restarting the service to change the port. My friend installed a firewall due to ddos attacks, and I think i need to manually unblock the port that I would like to be the new sshd port. How can I find out what firewall I'm running, and where can I add a new port to the allow list?

Port Speed: Big Difference Inbound Vs Outbound

May 18, 2008

I am moving into the world of dedicated servers (from VPS). I just got a server from Serveraday.com /OLM.net.

When I was doing bandwidth tests, I found the server's inbound speed was much slower than outbound. I tried downloading a bunch of different provider's 10MB test files from the command line of my server using wget. They were all around 20-30 Kbps.

When I take those same 10MB files and serve them from my dedicated box, the results are much different. My server can push the files out at over 1Mbps.

Why would my server be set up this way, and is this normal behaviour? I sent a ticket to OLM, but their support seems to take a long time. So I figured I would bounce the question off of all you here on WHT

Capping Port Speed On A Dedicated Server

Nov 26, 2008

I've got a CentOS 5 box that I want to cap/throttle the speed of the port to ensure that no more than 50 meg is passing in either direction at any given time.

- I know you can do this with FreeBSD using ipfw but that's not an option for me at the moment...

- I also know you can do this with some reasonably decent switching gear but again that's not an option. It's not my switch and they don't provide capped ports.

So, the question then becomes is there any way to lock the port down to 50 meg using only linux itself?

More Important For Shoutcast Server? Bandwidth Or Port Speed?

Jun 28, 2008

I wonder whatLs more important on a shoutcast server, to get more bandwidth per month as possible, or a faster port connection?

I have test a 2 hours music stream at 128k bit rate and was only 5MB per listener !
This is not to host 24/7 radios. Its a project to host DJs /Live Bands at
a maximum of 128k, with no more than 2 hours events.

Also each event between 50-80 listeners, and not at same days or hours.

About the port connection, what this means? :
Port: 10/100MBPS SWITCHED VLAN

Is it shared and from 10 to 100mbps?

I am trying to find the best deal with dedi servers.
Have at this moment a unlimited bandwidth /100Mbps shared, but it seems the CPU is too low (AMD Sempron 3100), as I canLt seem to create more than 40 shoutcast accounts (and no client is streaming, just ON), and the server load goes up to 4.5 !!

So, I am looking on the market , as I saw better deals with better processors (Pentium4, Core 2 Duo), and much cheaper (below $100), but they only offer 2000/3000GB bandwidth.

Whats do you think?

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Changing Custom Port And Creating Full Backups

Jan 22, 2015

Have some very important questions regarding changing plesk ports and creating full backups.

1. When changing plesks port number, what exactly will it effect? Will it effect auto updates, etc.?

2. When creating a backup, I'd like to backup the entire server to rollback at anytime when changes are made to core files, is this possible?

3. With backups, somehow I'd like to schedule backups to possibly make nightly copies to an external hard drive on my computer for a fail safe method just in case the server happens to crash and I'd need to restore to another server/service. How would this be possible?

Metro Ethernet Vs. DS3

Jul 22, 2008

Say I have my own office to start building out my own "mini" data center.

If I wanted a lot of bandwidth for the most reasonable cost, how do one go about buying bandwidth from various providers? What is Metro-Ethernet vs. say a DS3? I know there is Fractional DS3 (6 to 45mb/s) and then Ethernet services up to GigE. I'd rather not mess with BGP right now either.

If I am looking at 15-20mb/Sec of bandwidth, what would be a good route to go? My budget is about $1500/month for bandwidth and IP Addresses (I need 2 Full Class-C IP Spaces). I also want to be able to turn up speed as needed without a lot of hassle.

Is this a reasonable budget? And where would be a good place to start? Just call up like Level 3 or am I too small potatoes to even deal with?

Ethernet Connections

Jan 18, 2007

I now have to move on to the question of Ethernet ports in relations to rack mount servers. I have just about ever question answered now. Now my question is about the connection to the web my server will use. Is it better to have a single or a dual Ethernet post?

I see a lot of duals. Here are some of the samples I have read when building my server.
2 x Intel 82546GB Gigabit Ethernet Ports
Dual Onboard Gigabit Ethernet LAN Ports
Dual Intel 82541GI Single-port Gigabit Ethernet Controller
Broadcom dual Gb NICs
Intel dual Gb NICs
Broadcom BCM5754, 10/100/1000Mbps

I dont know which one to look at or get?

i have recently get this server , we moved to this server in the same datacenter

Hardware Information:icore7 920 + 12gb ram
Software Version;csf firewall, ossec Intrusion Detection System, rvsitebuilder
Control Panel(if any)whm+ fantastico

yesterday the dc tech logged-in by ssh (root) cause we couldn't connect to the ftp box we keep our backup's (the new box couldnt connect to the ftp got time out)
They fixed it.

Today i got a time out and after 2 reset and restaring of services the server was back again. Then i got this messages and it still coming (3 hours now i get 1 similar message per 5 second )

Code:
Nov 4 12:31:20 gandalf kernel: martian source 217.20.117.1 from 127.0.0.239, on dev eth0

Nov 4 12:31:22 gandalf kernel: ll header: ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:00:1a:4b:3a:7e:23:08:06
Also the firewall stopped the port scanning from a server within the same dc.

I checked it on google and the explanation's varies but most say that is a problem of the router/switch or similar.

Choosing Ethernet Switches

Feb 22, 2007

We're ready to setup 3-4 42U racks for servers and are in need of choosing Ethernet switches. What do you guys use and why?

I'm looked at Cisco switches, but lost in their product forest. I'm looked at Express 500, 2960 and 3750-E models. Is there any more difference (in exception of stacking, cli and hot-swap fan/psu) that I need to consider? Prices differentiate too much.

I'm also looked at Linksys/D-Link business products and they seems to have the same features as Cisco Express series, but only 50% cheaper.

If There's 2 Ethernet Line, How Will The Traffic Be Like

Jul 13, 2007

I've a rack in the datacentre, and actually sharing the ethernet line with another partner's rack.

Something like:

Bandwidth -> Switch 1 -> Switch 2 (partner's rack)
Bandwidth -> Switch 1 -> Switch 3 (my rack)

After a previous uplinks issue, i'm never able to hit above 4Mbps of download speed to my home's cable broadband anymore. I have no idea whether it's because my partner capped my bandwidth from Switch 1, or his usage has increased such that it's affecting my traffic too. I can't be too concerned about it with him, as he's paying the bulk of the bandwidth costs.

For the whole rack, i'm not able to hit above 5Mbps accumulatively, and my normal bandwidth usage is only about 1-2Mbps.

So i'm thinking of getting another line for bandwidth directly from the datacentre to my Switch 3, perhaps starting from just 1-2Mbps only.

How will things improve? Just a silly thought, whether my total available bandwidth can now be 5Mbps + 2Mbps = 7Mbps.

And then when I view the site from home . it's fine. But when I tried to login, the site is using a pop-up, I guess it's http authentciation, login, I was redirected to a url without my port number any more, that stops my access to the site as obviously I would.
