NIC Bonding And Switches
I just stumbled across mention of bonding two NICs to serve as one. (E.g., 100Mbps NIC + 100Mbps NIC = 'virtual' 200 Mbps NIC, as far as everything on the network is concerned.)

I'd been familiar with the concept for quite some time, but I guess I never really thought it through until just now...

How does this work with switches? It seems to me that the answer should be a flat, "It doesn't." But it seems that it does work. How does the switch merrily map an IP to two different ports? Do the two NICs maintain their MACs? (Wouldn't two MACs to one IP cause even more problems?)

Configure NIC On Windows
Between our Linux servers, I can get speed up to 80Mbps when transferring big files. However, between Linux and Windows, it's just around 800Kbps - 2Mbps. It shows in network connection properties that connected at 100Mbps, but not sure why it's so slow

Is there any setting I should pay attention? Running Windows 2003 on that box.

Ethernet Connections
I now have to move on to the question of Ethernet ports in relations to rack mount servers. I have just about ever question answered now. Now my question is about the connection to the web my server will use. Is it better to have a single or a dual Ethernet post?

I see a lot of duals. Here are some of the samples I have read when building my server.

NIC Cards Upgrade On 2 Servers
The issue we have is that server1 (web) has the load very high, compared to server2 (mysql). Sever2 stays at 0.5 during peak time.

I must mention that we have very heavy traffic hits only for 30min/day, then things calm down.

I simple diagram would be:
[USERS] <= NIC1 => [SERVER1 WEB] <= NIC2 => [SERVER2 MYSQL]

So I think we can install a load balancer and upgrade the NIC cards, in order to solve this problem.

What I thought is this:

In server1 (web) install 2 NICs, one facing the users and one facing the server2 (mysql).
Currently we have a 100MB NIC card into each server.
The 95th is way to high at peak time, over 500MB so I was thinking on installing a 1GB NIC facing the server2 (mysql).

My question is:
What is the best way to install a second NIC into an existing configuration?
Do I need a Cisco 2970 switch?

Example:
[USERS] <= NIC1 | NIC3 => [SERVER1 WEB] <= NIC2 => [SERVER2 MYSQL]

Possible Problem With The Ethernet Of My Dedi

Hardware Information:icore7 920 + 12gb ram
Software Version;csf firewall, ossec Intrusion Detection System, rvsitebuilder
Control Panel(if any)whm+ fantastico

yesterday the dc tech logged-in by ssh (root) cause we couldn't connect to the ftp box we keep our backup's (the new box couldnt connect to the ftp got time out)
They fixed it.

Today i got a time out and after 2 reset and restaring of services the server was back again.Then i got this messages and it still coming (3 hours now i get 1 similar message per 5 second )

Also the firewall stopped the port scanning from a server within the same dc.

I checked it on google and the explanation's varies but most say that is a problem of the router/switch or similar.

Metro Ethernet Vs. DS3
Say I have my own office to start building out my own "mini" data center.

If I wanted a lot of bandwidth for the most reasonable cost, how do one go about buying bandwidth from various providers? What is Metro-Ethernet vs. say a DS3? I know there is Fractional DS3 (6 to 45mb/s) and then Ethernet services up to GigE. I'd rather not mess with BGP right now either.

If I am looking at 15-20mb/Sec of bandwidth, what would be a good route to go? My budget is about $1500/month for bandwidth and IP Addresses (I need 2 Full Class-C IP Spaces). I also want to be able to turn up speed as needed without a lot of hassle.

Is this a reasonable budget? And where would be a good place to start? Just call up like Level 3 or am I too small potatoes to even deal with?

We're ready to setup 3-4 42U racks for servers and are in need of choosing Ethernet switches. What do you guys use and why?

I'm looked at Cisco switches, but lost in their product forest. I'm looked at Express 500, 2960 and 3750-E models. Is there any more difference (in exception of stacking, cli and hot-swap fan/psu) that I need to consider? Prices differentiate too much.

I'm also looked at Linksys/D-Link business products and they seems to have the same features as Cisco Express series, but only 50% cheaper.

If There's 2 Ethernet Line, How Will The Traffic Be Like
I've a rack in the datacentre, and actually sharing the ethernet line with another partner's rack.

Something like:

Bandwidth -> Switch 1 -> Switch 2 (partner's rack)
Bandwidth -> Switch 1 -> Switch 3 (my rack)

After a previous uplinks issue, i'm never able to hit above 4Mbps of download speed to my home's cable broadband anymore. I have no idea whether it's because my partner capped my bandwidth from Switch 1, or his usage has increased such that it's affecting my traffic too. I can't be too concerned about it with him, as he's paying the bulk of the bandwidth costs.

For the whole rack, i'm not able to hit above 5Mbps accumulatively, and my normal bandwidth usage is only about 1-2Mbps.

So i'm thinking of getting another line for bandwidth directly from the datacentre to my Switch 3, perhaps starting from just 1-2Mbps only.

How will things improve? Just a silly thought, whether my total available bandwidth can now be 5Mbps + 2Mbps = 7Mbps.

I am attempting to NIC team a HP BL465c blade server within a HP BladeSystem c7000 Enclosure. Once teamed I get an error:

"Active Path Failure: No team member of an NFT team is able to establish a connection with the echo node."

I have verified the network port connections are correct so I am unsure what the root cause is. We just recently purchased our first blade enclosures and have not NIC teamed on blade hardware before.

Network Issues (cisco / Nic Duplex)
We are currently showing a bunch of our server as half duplex on the nic when performing the command "ethtool eth0". The switches are all set to full duplex on our network.

Every single port has duplex full and speed 100. We can't seem to figure out why specific servers are showing half duplex and some are showing full. Can anybody give any insight on this issue and perhaps where to look? I am stumped at this point.

CPanel With Multiple Ethernet Adapters
We have a few CPanel servers, all with multiple NIC's. (2 Each)

We want to setup Eth0 to be the managment interface (ie. 72.2.24.x)
We want to setup Eth1 to be the Shared / Exclusive IP Nic (ie. 67.69.141.x)

Here is the issue, Eth1 is on a totally different Vlan than Eth0.. thus, isolating DDOS attacks, and any other type of traffic concerns for managment.. But, it also has a different G/W as Eth0.

2 NIC - Set Default Gateway - Crossover Cable In Use
I have a Linux Server (CentOS 4.4) running, it has two network cards.

1. Onboard 100MBit (eth0), uses DHCP to obtain IP, this card is the only one that is able to connect to the internet.
IP: 192.168.1.13
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Bcast: 192.168.1.255

2. PCI Gigabit card (eth1), uses static IP, and is connected to my Windows machines via a CROSSOVER cable.

Yum Problem On Fedora 5
I am having a problem with YUM on Fedora 5, for a long time it has not worked saying there is nothing to update when I know there is, I have tried to correct this by following a forum post of someone having the same problem, now I have really messed things up...

When I type any yum command (yum, yum --version, yum check-update etc) I get the following error:

Here is where I stand..

OS: FRESH install of Unix Fedora Core 6
Kernel Version: Kernel 2.6.18-1/2798.fc6 on an i686
Hardware Information: Brand new Dell SC1435 Server
Software Version: MySQl 5
Control Panel: cPanel

A few things I did already..

Nothing to do
mysqld: unrecognized service

#ps -ef | grep -i mysql

I don't see the mysql.sock file. What I can do to further troubleshoot this issue?

4 G RAM Not Detected By Fedora 7
We recently setup a server with 4 gigs of RAM and installed Fedora core 7 32-bit version in it. After installing the OS, I have found that Fedora is able to detect only 2 GB and not 4 GB of RAM. I installed the kernel-PAE and kernel-PAE-devel modules and restart the server and made sure that the the OS with the PAE switch starts at boot time. However, the OS still does not detect the 4 GB RAM. Any idea what else can be done apart from installing the 64-bit OS in the system?

I will be dropping my shared-hosting plan and ordering a small VPS as soon as I can decide on which operating sytem to use. It seems that most companies offer the following choices: Suse, Debian, Fedora and CentOS.

I freely admit that I am a full-fledged n00b when it comes to linux and will be learning as I go, the problem is I just don't know where to start because I'm not familiar with any of them. I have at least heard of Suse, Debian and Fedora before, but didn't even know this CentOS existed until yesterday... and yet, it seems to be one of the more popular choices.

So I was wondering if some of you seasoned VPS veterans here could recommend an OS, tell me what the differences are, or otherwise share any experience you might have with any of them.

Probs Upgrading To Fedora 5 From 4--Yes, I Know I Am Late In Doing So
I tried to upgrade to fedora 5 and then to whatever is next, but I am having problems. After running yum -y update I get this:

Error: hwdata conflicts with pcmcia-cs
Error: Missing Dependency: hotplug >= 2001_04_24-9 is needed by package pcmcia-cs
Error: Missing Dependency: howl = 0.9.8 is needed by package howl-libs
Error: Unable to satisfy dependencies
Error: Package hal needs kernel < 2.6.15, this is not available.
Error: Package hwdata needs pcmcia-cs, this is not available.
Error: Package howl-libs needs howl = 0.9.8, this is not available.
Error: Package pcmcia-cs needs hotplug >= 2001_04_24-9, this is not available.

How To Upgrade Fedora Release On Old OpenVZ Vps?
On my desktop I keep up with the Fedora life cycle by upgrading via DVD every six months or so, and I am currently running Fedora 9. By contrast, my hosted VPS based on OpenVZ/CentOS is still providing me with a Fedora Core 5 virtual environment. I used to keep up with FC5 updates via yum until FC5 maintenance ended, long ago. Question: is it possible to upgrade from Fedora Core 5 to Fedora 9 via yum and without any intervention on the current underlying VE by the VPS host? If so, how would I do that?

To Take Data From Mounted 2 Disk Fedora Cpanel
I've got a problem with one of my servers, and i dont now how to do it. I need to find a technical service that I could hire for a job.

It's a small job. I've got one server that was compromised by D.O.S. atack and taken down by hosting company they did a clean instal fedora and cpanel and said that the data would be mounted on a old drive I need to restore the webs about 30 small sites
Would anyone suggest a person that could do that?

Kernel Upgrade On Fedora Core 4 Server
I have a server running Fedora 4 and WHM/cPanel. I would like to upgrade the linux kernel to the latest version, so mosey in via SSH and type "yum -y upgrade". It downloads a few things and tells me everything is hunky dory.

Now, the version it says it is currently running is: 2.6.17-1.2142_FC4 #1 Tue Jul 11 22:41:14 EDT 2006

Is that the really the newest version available? Maybe I'm confused as to how this works, but if I go to kernel.org it tells me the most recent stable version of the kernel is 2.6.24.3. Is this because I am running FC4?
