MSSQL Database Intensive Hosting

Oct 4, 2009

We were on shared hosting until we were asked to move off due to our database using a lot of the CPU - how much, we dont know.

Anyway, moved to a 1GB Hyper-V VPS, seems like we have one core of an E5420 but presume the server is shared between 12 people.

When our ASP application runs, the MSSQL server reaches 100% CPU and the website performs slower than the shared server we were on.

Where can we go from here? Seems like going from shared to a Dual/Quad Core Dedicated Server is a large jump and a massive jump in price.

What about a host with a high performance dedicated server for MSSQL shared between customers.

Plesk 12.x / Windows :: MSSQL - Unable To Backup Database Operating System Error 5

Mar 28, 2015

12.0.18 update #39
Server 2012r2

Logged into my panel today to run a database backup on a site I'm working on to be confronted with the following:

Unable to backup database 'XXXXXXXXXX'
Cannot open backup device 'C:Program Files (x86)ParallelsPleskBackupXXXXXXXXX.co.nzdatabasesXXXXXXXXX-29 est'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.).
BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

(Error code 21)

I'm not sure why permissions would change on their own, I'm also not sure how to fix the permissions error. I get the same error on all databases.

PrivateTemp folder appears to have write permissions for Group MSSQLSERVER

Hi Perf. MSSQL 2008 DB W/ Windows VPS

Mar 9, 2009

I've been paying $160 a month for a dedicated server that runs my web application and my mssql 2008 database.

Due to the economic times, I've been searching for a cheaper alternative... This gets me thinking... Wouldn't this be a good business plan for VPS companies?

Include 4-5 databases on a extreme, high-performance MSSQL server for all windows vps.

I know there are current setups like this, but no host really emphasizes the power of their mssql server. If they show how their db server is extremely fast, customers would be less likely to try and run their own express version on the vps. Thereby decreasing ram/cpu load on the vps, and increasing the overall efficiency of the dedicated server running the vps'.

Are there any hosts that currently market like this? If not, why don't you?

MSSQL 2005 + Windows 2003 Standard X64

Jun 4, 2008

I've got MSSQL 2005 Enterprise running on Windows 2003 Standard R2 x64. The server has 12GB RAM.

Now, I've been trying to find some way to monitor how much RAM MSSQL takes up, but found two conflicting things.

One source says that MSSQL 2005 Enterprise can only use up to 4GB RAM on Windows Standard R2 x64. Another says Microsoft changed this to 32GB for Windows Standard R2 x64 only (i.e. not x86).

Could anyone confirm either of these? I'd find out myself if I knew how I could see how much it's using (it only shows 90mb in taskmanager).

Win/MSSQL Hosting

May 19, 2008

what level of hardware/hosting plan I need for one of my clients.

Current stats:
~65 ecommerce orders per week
~5000 unique visitors per day

Requirements:
Win2k3
ASP.NET 3.5
MSSQL 2005

My first recommendation to them was RackSpace due their good reputation, but they were not able to pay for the plan suggested to them by RackSpace.

My other question is what type of plan do you guys recommend based on the above stats/requirements (managed/VPS/dedicated/etc.)? VPS is what came to mind for me since we'll probably end up using this setup for more than one website/domain and since they are so price sensitive.

I'm fairly comfortable setting up and administering Win2k3 and MSSQL. I'm sure that plays into the choices a little.

I know there is probably some information I have left out that would help you guys make a recommendation. Please just let me know what else would help.

Plesk 11.x / Windows :: Regional Settings And MSSQL Collation

We received the following request from customer in order for his website to function properly:

Go to the control panel of your Windows Server change Regional Settings so that the default language iS Greek.

Also, change the collation of Microsoft SQL Server to Greek-Accent Insensitive-Case Insensitive.

Will these create any problems to the rest of the websites that are hosted on the server? And if no, how to change the collation of the Microsoft SQL Server?

Plesk 11.x / Windows :: Delete Inactive MSSQL Remote Server

So now I can't remove the remote MSSQL server from plesk as there is a DB associated with it, and I can't remove the DB because it obviously can't find the remote server! I'm now stuck in a loop!

How I can force remove the DB/User from plesk and then the remote server ? I'm now receiving errors whilst backing up the account, so needs to be done.

Plesk 12.x / Windows :: MSSQL 2012 User Is Created Without DB Owner Role

Jan 5, 2015

After upgrading to Plesk Panel 12, when db user is created on MsSQL 2012 server, db user seems to be missing db_owner role which is causing a lot of hassle at the moment.

I was not able to locate any settings for such except for following option.

"Enable the db_backupoperator role membership for all Microsoft SQL Server database users"

Please note, this only applies to new db user created as Plesk 11.5 didn't have such problem and only seems to be related to SQL 2012 not 2008.

ASP.net 3.5 / ISAPI-Rewrite / MsSQL Shared Hosting

Mar 19, 2008

Since about 2002 I have constantly had my own co-located and then dedicated box. Before that, the only paid host I ever used was verio.net. Now that I sold off most of my sites, it is time to move to a smaller, shared hosting plan.

My question is can anyone suggest a good hosting plan? I do not need a lot of space or bandwidth, but I do require a few things:

- ASP.net 3.5 is a huge plus, but 2.0 is do-able

- At least one msSQL database

- Daily backups is also a huge plus. I don't need this second, but eventually I will want it.

- Good technical support is a must. I have dealt with to many companies even with my dedicated hosting that offered horrible tech support. A three day wait on a question is not acceptable. Phone support is a plus, but a 24 hour reply on an email is enough.

- ISAPI-Rewrite, or an equivalent is a must. I rewrite my URL's for SE rankings, as I believe everyone should, so the ability to host a rewrite script is a must. Though I use ISAPI-Rewrite, if their is an equivalent that is do-able.

- Need to be able to run at least (2) domains. My main company domain and then a second domain which is basically a landing page. In future I need a 3rd domain added, so ability to upgrade or add on a domain cheaply is a must too.

If you own a hosting company that matches this, or can suggest any please do so. If you suggest and they offer a referral program feel free to let me know your referral code as you obviously deserve the credit for suggesting the company.

MSSQL Express 2005 Instead Of MSSQL 2005 ?

Dec 27, 2007

I`ve just got a new Windows 2003 Web Edition box and now I`m going to install a database server on that.

MSSQL 2005 license would costs 270$/mo for me, So thats not possible to use it because of its price.

I`m not sure if MSSQL Express 2005 or MSDE (which are free) can handle all requirements of ASP.NET programmers or not.

Is there any limitations for major scripts on those? or will those make any doubts for programmers?

Please share your experiences and suggestions.

* I`m going to install "Hosting Controller" on that box.

PHP/Database Performance On Windows

Jul 19, 2008

I've got an app that I've built using FastCGI, PHP, MS SQL and it's currently running on a single IIS 6 (Win2K3) server. The MS SQL database is very large and some of the pages return large result sets so I've also installed memcached to cache the data.

Right now the web app and the database are both running on the same server. I'm looking at moving the database to a 2 node cluster, and the web server to it's own 2 node cluster for higher availability. But I've got a couple of questions:

1. Would IIS 7 (Windows 2008) be faster than IIS 6 (Windows 2003)?

2. Would Apache (on Windows) be faster than IIS?

3. Can Apache be clustered?

4. Would it make more sense to have a load-balanced pair for the web servers instead of an active-active cluster?

5. How does IIS 7 Kernel Mode caching compare to using memcached?

6. Would there be any decrease in performance if the database is running on another machine instead of the same machine as the web app?

7. Should memcached run on the web servers (which will be storing and retrieving the data), on the database servers (which actually has the data), or on it's own dedicated server?
