asp.net 2.0 + mssql server 2005 + ajaxtoolkit support
I need windows hosting with asp.net 2.0 + mssql server 2005 + ajaxtoolkit support for a website project that is being developed. It can probably be launched on shared hosting, but I would prefer at least a VPS. With any success this site would eventually need to be hosted on a dedicated server.
I have been offered a 1U Dell server for free with Windows Server 2003, Dual Xenon Processors, 2 GB ram and 2 x 80gb hard drives. It would probably serve the site well for a long time, but I would need to set it up (or get it setup $) for the above requirements and get it colocated somewhere. BTW, I'm not too familiar with Windows hosting.
To launch the site, I don't really want to spend more than $100 per month. And I'd prefer to stay in the $50 per month range if possible.
Open to any and all suggestions, comments, questions at this point? I've searched and see a lot of suggestions for shared hosting, but I'd really like your opinions on colocating the dedicated server.

We use VS 2005 and are happy with the stability and performance etc but wanted to know if there are any great advantages to using virtuozzo? It seems that a higher ratio of VPS per box can be achieved with virtuozzo due to the ability to share RAM but is this worth it for the extra cost of licenses and possible security / stability risks?

I've got MSSQL 2005 Enterprise running on Windows 2003 Standard R2 x64. The server has 12GB RAM.
Now, I've been trying to find some way to monitor how much RAM MSSQL takes up, but found two conflicting things.
One source says that MSSQL 2005 Enterprise can only use up to 4GB RAM on Windows Standard R2 x64. Another says Microsoft changed this to 32GB for Windows Standard R2 x64 only (i.e. not x86).
Could anyone confirm either of these? I'd find out myself if I knew how I could see how much it's using (it only shows 90mb in taskmanager).

I got some question regarding MS virtual server2005 R2.
1. If i created an instance of Windows2003 in virtual server2005, if i screw up something. would it affect or crash my host server? I have a colo Windows2003 R2 standard server but it also host several websites that i don't want it to go down if i mess up the instance in vs2005. i believe it won't affect the host but i just want to confirm this. does anyone have problem with screw up guest OS taking down the host OS?
2. how about liscense? do i need to purchase an liscense of Windows2003 in order to run in virtual server?
3. how much RAM do you think i need to assign to it? my colo server spec. is AMD64 dual core 4000+ w/4GB of RAM. Do you think 512mb is good enough for the guest OS (windows2003).

I was trying to bring down license fee for a customer who needed SQL Server on Windows Server.
realised that MS has released a fix to install the SQL Server 2005 on a Windows 2008 Web Edition.[url]
The license fee for the web edition is lower than the standard version.

I have built a website based off of The Beer House template/book and am about ready to launch it. I need SQL server 2005, and ASP.net functionality. I will either use the included forum module or am considering a third party forum such as aspplayground.net.
I would like to spend $10-$20/month, I don't mind paying a bit extra to have a fast loading site, but I don't want to spend too much. I would appreciate any suggestions.
The database will handle the forums, the store, the users of course, and a custom database I am building for some vehicle information. To start out the database is not very big (maybe 20mb), but I expect it to grow to support the forums and users, etc.
Also, I have already built a database (mdf) file on my computer through visual studio 2008. Is it true most shared hosting accounts wont allow you the access to copy and paste the database file directly? I don't really want to have to recreate all these tables on the host server.

i am finding a MSSQL 2005 server for one of my application for my client.
Actually, it is a small business program. It will not have a heavy load on the server.
Do any hosting packages company for that with reasonable price? It is not a website. It is a C# software application. So the port will not be 21 or some web port.

I have a sql server 2005 database which is 5gb. My current host only allows 2gb and charges and obscene amount for extra space. Does anyone know of an inexpensive host that I can put a 5gb database 2005 on? It doesn't need much bandwidth, it will just be for storage/archive purposes.

how do you guys do the maintenance for shared hosting SQL 2000/2005? Do you just let the customers do the maintenance, compacting and optimizing themselves or do you scheduled a task to do that?
Till now I had let my clients do that. But some clients it seemed do not really know much about this. But if we were to compact or optimize all the databases by task scheduling, I am worried that it is something against their privacy.

I have just found out my server only supports .htaccess with ISAPI_Rewrite. Not quite sure how to accomplish this as in the past I just used normal .htaccess code. I just want to do a simple redirect so could anyone shed a bit of light on what I now need to pop in the file.

I have modified this regular expression file for the ISAPI_Rewrite mod (for IIS), but its leaving out querystring param's. I've played with it but can't quite get it to work.
I can see WHY its not including them, I'm just not sure what the expression should be.
Example:
[url]
This should rewrite to path:
/username/?12345
Currently, the expression results in this:
/username/
Here's the code I'm using now:
[ISAPI_Rewrite]
# Any web site starts other than www will be re-mapped to /<subdomain>/
# Example: [url]
# Note: if the folder does not exists, then the user will get a 404 error automatically.
RewriteCond Host: (.*).domain.com
RewriteRule (.*) /$1$2 [I,O,L]
#Fix missing slash char on folders
#This has to be at the end because if invalid dir exists,
#we should show 404 first
RewriteCond Host: (.*)
RewriteRule ([^.?]+[^.?/]) http://$1$2/ [I,RP]

I`ve just got a new Windows 2003 Web Edition box and now I`m going to install a database server on that.
MSSQL 2005 license would costs 270$/mo for me, So thats not possible to use it because of its price.
I`m not sure if MSSQL Express 2005 or MSDE (which are free) can handle all requirements of ASP.NET programmers or not.
Is there any limitations for major scripts on those? or will those make any doubts for programmers?
Please share your experiences and suggestions.
* I`m going to install "Hosting Controller" on that box.

6 multiple domain name support in one hosting plan
7 a lot of bandwith

Hey all. I have some legacy web applications that requires MySQL 4.X to function. Too much pain to upgrade. Can any of you recommend a VPS linux hosting provider that you can vouch for, who also support MySQL 4?
I am currently using MediaTemple GS which has MySQL 4 support; however, recent problems have made me want to consider other options. Unfortuantely, MediaTemple DV (thier VPS option) does not have MySQL 4 as an option.
Many thanks.

I am currently hosted with HostFresh on their HongKong sever (Shared Hosting) and my site has been down for 7 days now!
I tried emailing them for several days, before calling their US phone line 3 days ago, which I was told they could not help and had to wait for an emailmwhich i replied I had been waiting 3 days for a reply..... later that day I finally get a response for my email which asked what the hell is wrong and when it will be fixed, the simply say- site was nullrouted and have to wait for it to come online
this was 3 days ago now... I have sent 1 (sometimes 2) emails per day since, I currently have 8 open tickets, all ranging from the last 6-7wks - YES... I had open tickets when this all began t do with me paying my bill twice, which i heard nothing for weeks so I did a charge back through PayPal.. another mater.
Does anyone else have this problem with support there?
and with the site?
is there a way I can get my files of the server and DB?
can someone please advise what I should do?
I am hopeless with out them as they have my site files, otherwise i would have dumped them days ago!
by the way, I have emailed them number of times, they just ignore me, I am going to be calling again t the U.S in the morning, though they have no idea, and frankly nor do I - I need my DB it has my whole site for the last 18mths on it - over 10,000 members info.

I am writing a PHP/MySQL application which extracts information from a .DBF file on a remote server and then builds a web page.
However, I just found out that my hosting company doesn't (and won't) support the FTP functions within PHP and they won't enable DBF file support (extension=php_dbase.dll in php.ini)
Does anyone know if other hosting companies will do this?
Also, at the risk of asking a very broad question, is there a place to go to get consolidated reviews of web hosting companies?

How much traffic can a typical $5/mo shared hosting account support?
A lot of them claimed "unlimited" bandwidth and storage. Of course there's no such thing as unlimited.
I have a site based on Python, Django, MySQL or Postgresql. It doesn't have any video or other bandwidth heavy elements, but the whole site is dynamic, each page takes about 5 to 10 DB query, 90% reads, 10% writes.
What kinds of traffic can a shared hosting account support for a site like that?
At stackoverflow.com, someone stated that a $5/mo shared hosting account can typically support 10-20,000 unique users per day or 100-200,000 pageviews/day. Does that sound about right?
Any recommendation for a good hosting company that'd suit my needs? My site will start small but hopefully will ramp up quickly. I'd like a hosting firm that can support that growth.
