View 17 Replies View RelatedIn short, we've tried for months to contact a client and he's basically fallen off the face of the earth. Emails were originally received by his mail server, but now they bounce. His phone used to ring and we could leave voicemails, but now it goes straight to voice mail. I have a weird hunch he passed away or went to prison or something. We haven't heard from him in about 45 days.
He has pretty expensive hardware that any reasonable person would want back, but it's eating up a lot of space on the rack considering it's unpaid for.
So here's my question to other providers: When a colocation customer is completely unreachable (phone, email, etc) and way past due, what do you do with their hardware?
And customers: what would you want done with your hardware?
My Nameserver and FTP went down 3 times for the past 1 week. Each time they went down, i need to restart them using WebHostManager. Is there a setting problem on my server as I hv been getting this error msg email from cpanel every day:

IS THERE A SETTING PROBLEM?
my host freaked up when getting a letter from a company about DMCA, and quickly shut my site down.
Does anyone know of a dedicated server hoster who does not jump the gun and shut down sites from a little Cease and Desist letter for around 299 EUR a month?
The site gets roughly in the thousands of hits per day.

I was searching a few days ago for a good vps hosting. When I found out VPSLAND.COM, I was very surprised. Their prices are the cheapest on the net and, I thinked it was an hoax. So I did a bit of search on the net, and I found many negatives comments on them. But, I decided I try them anyway and buy a Windows VPS... and I think it was the good option !
The "supposed" downtimes and "non-replying support team" are totaly fictive. You want service, then, you get it with VPSLAND.COM. They offer great VPS plans at a price you will never see at other webhosters. And, since 3 days, no downtime.
I would like to hear people's stories about VPSLAND.COM if anyone haves.

In what appears as an even bigger mistake by alphared and I would expect some legal action against them even more. Alphared apparently will be trying trying to charge for service while the billing system and everything else was down.
How were we supposed to cancel, pay or do anything if we didn't want the service? How can they expect to have people pay for service when some of us have already moved and paid for service elsewhere?
I had confidence in them coming back, but I will for sure continue to move away. They couldn't manage the company and expect us to pay for service when we had no option to cancel.

I have a problem with hoster. Purchased virtual hosting. All worked fine for more than a year. I did not make any changes in websites recently. Last several days one issue appears constantly: website starts downloading very slowly (30-60 sec for 20 kb page, or connection timeout). And each day their tech support don't realy want to help me. Only after 3-4 emails they fix the problem, but on the next day the problem arises again. I suppose they just ignore my problem. Possibly server is overloaded by other sites, or software was not tuned correctly, or something like that, and hoster does not want to solve the problem.
What can I do with this hoster?

I have a blog (hindigo.net) registered and hosted through mydomain.com (Standard Windows Package). For the past days, it has been unaccessible most of the time (either keeps trying to load without success, or loads a blank page).
When accessing the site structure through FTP, all files are fine, and I can access the control panel without any problem.
I tried to get some info on possible server updates from the support, but their answers are not very informative:
- either a server update;
- or the site is working fine (it was indeed yesterday late, as I am in Asian time zone);
- or they ask to put DNS to NSx.MYDOMAIN.COM, while the hosting solution automatically puts NSx.MYDOMAINWEBHOST.COM
Am I the only one facing issues this past days with MyDomain.com, or is this general?
I am in the process of switching to another provider (Infomaniak.ch) anyway, but if this is a personal situation only (e.g. site attack?)

But I can start off with the basic req. that might narrow it a tad atleast.

I myself are not the most skilled coder in the world, nor is the others around me and we like Cpanel since it "saves" us from confusion very often.

We use CMS scripts (MXP, Joomla, e107, etc) for our communities and forum scripts (phpbb, vBulletin, etc) at all times. So a good loading time is a must, nothing is as devestating for a communitie than a slooow forum.

BIG and cheap. We just doing noncommercial / fun / silly projects / communities so it needs to be cheap and with a good size. Have some photographers + communities with albums and that eats up a good chunk of webspace after awhile.

We greatly appriciate any tips on hosters that covers this. Support don't have to superfast, we pretty relaxed when it comes to that, but the other reqs. is needed.

I am currently with a smaller US-provider where I am running a dedicated gentoo server with a dozen domains (all small stuff, mostly sme/private websites) and 2 dozen email accounts.
The nice thing about the current provider is that he lets me run sub-accounts where the holders of those accounts have their own billing. I let them run a domain/website on my server since its no extra cost for them, but they pay for the domain and extra email space for example w/o me having to care for it. They basically offer a minimum package and add every single thing on top of it, which I like since I do not need any webpage builders, templates whatever else. I rather only pay what I take.
Basically I am happy except for the connection speed, specially for the email. I am in Asia and other people using this server from Europe, and the time it takes to connect, up/download data to the server and to download larger emails is simply out of the normal.
any recommendations there? I am currently paying 75 USD/Mo + domain names. I think this is also a bit on the high side given that the server hardware is a bit out of date by now.
I am looking at the minimum to relocate only the email hosting to some faster service, which would have to have a reasonable storage size (>= gmail) with POP/IMAP access and of course to use my own domain names.

With Windows 2003 server, there are comprehensive lists of what you need to do to secure the server before use. For Windows 2008, I wonder is there such a list? Or is it true as what I heard from Microsoft that it is already secured out of the box?
Anyone has any resources on the hardening or preparation of 2008 for server hosting uses?
FTPS is not working after upgrade from plesk 11. On plesk 11 windows and linux worked fine, after upgrade my windows server, it stopped working.

I'm making a reasonably uninformed comparison here. Since Windows Vista is noted to be more resource intensive and slower than Win XP, are we right in assuming that Windows 2008 is slower than Windows 2003?
For instance, with two boxes with an identical hardware setup but the two different server OSes, will the same application like, say MySQL run slower on the Win 2008 machine?
There seem to be strong forum rules in place about the kinds of posts that hosters can make.
But from my perspective it is somehow leaving a large gap in useful information I would like to know that I can't quite put my finger on right now.
So I would like to get responses from Windows hosters in this thread without violating any forum spam guidelines and I sure hope I'm not wasting my time here with this concept but here goes...

Ultimately, the thing Windows Web Hosters are providing is the delivery of information that has been constructed by developers using program code they have assembled using a large array of mostly .NET technology.
The reason the Hoster is providing Windows hosting is that a sufficiently large enough population of Web Developers have been attracted to some aspect of the Windows technology stack.
And there is certainly lots of innovative and interesting technology that attracts developers to focus on .NET in just the same way that there is also interesting technology in the Linux world.
So here's the problem. It appears as if the Windows hosting companies with the odd exception have almost no interest in Windows and .NET technology.
But if they actually did have such an interest, it is not clear how they would communicate it for discussion here at WHT because of the spam rules and of course trying to communicate anything at all about hosting on the general internet is just swamped by spam. The noise level is just insane!
So I am hoping that such a discussion can take place in this thread by asking some very specific questions:
1. What interesting Microsoft technology have you researched, tested or played with lately?
2. What programs or scripts have you personally developed lately to investigate .NET 3.5 features?
3. What do you think of XBAP delivery from the net and why do you think it hasn't caught on in a larger way since it sure delivers a richer client experience than Flash or even Silverlight.
4. What do you think of Azure and will Microsoft let hosters be part of the cloud anytime soon? Can you think of useful or interesting Azure mashups from a hosting perspective?
5. Have you tried any totally silly and insane things with the .NET runtime inside of SQL Server 2005/2008 that would give your DB guys a heart attack?
6. Have you tried out the Google systems where you give your employees 20% of company time to play around with personal projects like this?
Latest Update 12.0.18 Update 12 appears to have removed PHP 5.4 and PHP 5.5 from my dropdown under hosting settings.
The only PHP that is left is PHP 5.3
Yet, the updates and upgrades page still lists PHP 5.4 and PHP 5.5 as installed.
Also PHP is still working on the virtual websites that were previously enabled with either 5.4 or 5.5, but not able to change using the Plesk Panel.
Given that Parallels has broken the Panel in that latest automatic update I'd hope it can be resolved ASAP.
I can't even find any references in the KB about Plesk 12 on Windows regarding PHP versions
I can even give feedback about the broken patch as every feedback channel requires paid support.

Prior to using plesk, I had a few sites that had SSL certificates installed, the old fashioned way (manually through IIS). I have now setup those domains in plesk, and I need to somehow make PLESK aware of these SSL certificates.Right now, I setup the domain in plesk, give it a dedicated IP, and allow SSL connections. It chooses the default certificate and my already installed in IIS SSL certificate isnt listed.
Is there any way I can get it listed? I went to the add an SSL area, and it seems that this area is only good for generating new SSL certificates, but mine is good for another 1+ years.The bummer is that for some reason, anytime I make any type of change to the site in plesk, that it seems to overwrite the SSL bindings and changes my manual changes to the correct certificate (through iis) back to the default certificate.
Is there hosting that use windows xp rather than windows server 2003? What is the advantage of using windows server2003 anyway?
