Windows Server 2003 Web Or Standard Edtion
I am going to buy my own server and colocate this at a data center. This server is going to only host one website with Mysql as backend database. I notice there are 3 different Windows 2003 server, Web, Standard and Enterprise. I am leaning toward the Standard version. Can I use Window 2003 Standard Edition to run my the web server? Can I buy this to do web hosting [url]

Windows 2003 Web & Standard
I'm sure there is an easy answer to this, and i'm probably being a little lazy, but the google searches i did didn't really help. As I need to have windows hosting, apart from the price, is there any difference between setting up the server with windows 2003 standard edition and web edition? I want to run MS SQL and My sql databases, run asp, .Net 2 and php on the server. I'd also want to connect with RDP which i'm assuming is fine. Most of the searches seem to talk about the fact that you can't set up active directory,or making it a domain controller but not much else.

Windows 2003 Server Standard R2
I have to setup a company server over a huge hardware profile made for me: - 8 cpu - 16gb RAM - gbits LAN - 1 TB of RAID-5 storage bay The server will be splitted in two server (it's actually a balde running ESX and two guests). My question is: - I am better to setup 64 bits or better run the old and stable 32 bits? I consider this question because: - I might install Exchange 2007 - I might upgrade to Windows 2008 Out of this, is there known problem/issue with 64 bits Windows 2003 OS?

Windows 2008 Standard VS Web Edition
Posted this as an add-on to another question I had in the Tech forum, had no reply, perhaps I posted in the wrong forum. Posting here instead: I noticed MS has lifted some of the restriction concerning the Web Server edition, it's like half the price of Standard. I'm mainly going to be hosting a couple of separate web sites, run ASP.Net and PHP, along with some database servers (currently considering SQL Server Express and MySQL). Email server is being considered, though our load isn't too great, it's just for a couple of friends and myself. We're also intending to run game servers off it (Counter-Strike Source, Call of Duty series, etc.) on occasions. Would the Web Server edition suffice for these? Or is it still technically limited/has license restrictions, and I will need at least the standard edition? I may also intend to serve streaming windows Media files.

How To Change The Default Datetime Format For Windows Server 2003 Standard
how to change the default or the master datetime format for Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition. My problem is as such. - Have installed Coldfusion 5.0 on a Windows 2003 Server and have configured the part on the Web service extensions. - One of the coldfusion program/application that is needed to be migrated from another server which is running Windows 2000. - Encountered problem such as the datetime that is passed to the application when clients view on their workstations is different. - My program take in dd/MM/yyyy but however it seems like the server is always default to M/d/yyyy or MM/dd/yyyy. So, how can i change the default setting so that it will apply to the user account IUSR or across all accounts that is used on the server?

Windows Media Server & Web Server
I have a company that wants to stream some live events via Windows Media Encoder/Windows Media Player. I believe the best route is to use a WMS, stream to the WMS, then the CDN would pull from there for events. Can someone help me explain a Windows Media Server versus a web server? Can you host web sites on a WMS? Is WMS just an extension to a regular Windows 2003 server?

Windows WEB Server 2008 -stand Alone
I'm working with a local ISP and we're working on getting some windows hosting going (he's been 100% linux thus far). We're trying to ensure that we can host my e-commerce site on Windows Web Server 2008. It seems like it does exactly what we want - we can run a sql exress instance on it and just host the site on that same box. that's all we want to do. The ISP talked to some sort of Microsoft software reseller who's trying to convince him that Web Server 2008 requires Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (or some other version anyway) implying taht Web Server 2008 is simply an addon type of thing and has to run on top of another OS. Can anyone clear this up definitively? Also, are there any MAXimum system reqs for Web Server? I seem to remember reading somewhere you could only run 4 CPUs and like 4 gigs of ram or something with Web Server 2008.

I wonder how is that done, do they buy licenses in bulk and then lease them monthly basis or there is an agreement with Microsoft. Windows 2008 Versus Windows 2003 Server
With Windows 2003 server, there are comprehensive lists of what you need to do to secure the server before use. For Windows 2008, I wonder is there such a list? Or is it true as what I heard from Microsoft that it is already secured out of the box? Anyone has any resources on the hardening or preparation of 2008 for server hosting uses?

For instance under websitefolder you have a folder called bobsfolder. I want bob to login and just be "jailed" to bobsfolder, but when websitefolderadmin logs in they have access to the root of websitefolder and all its subfolders.

MSSQL 2005 + Windows 2003 Standard X64
I've got MSSQL 2005 Enterprise running on Windows 2003 Standard R2 x64. The server has 12GB RAM. Now, I've been trying to find some way to monitor how much RAM MSSQL takes up, but found two conflicting things. One source says that MSSQL 2005 Enterprise can only use up to 4GB RAM on Windows Standard R2 x64. Another says Microsoft changed this to 32GB for Windows Standard R2 x64 only (i.e. not x86). Could anyone confirm either of these? I'd find out myself if I knew how I could see how much it's using (it only shows 90mb in taskmanager).

Media Server Running Windows Server 2003 Std: Yes Or No
Most people probably run Linux on their media servers, but since I don't know much about Linux and the media server we have is unmanaged, I was wondering how you guys feel about running Windows Server 2003 Std on a media server instead of Linux. We'll only be using the server to host Flash video files (.flv) and we'll be serving those vids on websites hosted on other servers, resulting in approx. 50,000-100,000 media views per day (filesizes range from approx. 5MB to 10MB). We don't want to run Windows Media Services, just a Web server (IIS6) and have the Flash video players on the external websites take care of the streaming/downloading part.

Slow Server-to-server FTP'ing On Windows
I have a number of dedicated servers at different hosting companies, all with 100mbps burstable ports, using several versions of Windows (2003 or 2008, Standard or Enterprise). I've tried setting up FTP servers (the one that is part of IIS) on 4 of them, to transfer files between the servers. But, I can't get a single transfer to go faster than about 10-12Mbps. If I upload multiple files, each will go at right around 10-12Mbps (so I can get, say, ~50Mbps if transferring 5 files simultaneously). I've tried passive FTP, and I've tried tweaking the TCP settings (TcpWindowSize, GlobalTcpWindowSize, Tcp1323Opts), and the results are the same.

I want to run a website with huge traffic (50000 Unqies/Day) on windows server, the pages are in .asp (Static) no SQL or database. I wanted to ask a question, that are there any problems with Windows Servers on Windows 2003 (IIS 6) like any ASP connections limits etc. I mean does anyone have any idea if i run .asp pages with lots of traffic on server, will it make ASP pages Load SLOW ? (.html) work fine at this moment. Please kindly let me know of your experience with WINDOWS server. like ASP pages failed. or ASP pages not loading, or asp pages giving errors... etc Or should i switch to .php (linux server) i mean asking not from SECURITY point of view but... from LOAD balancing... means i want that Simple Static pages, .asp would create any problem with huge traffic of 50000/day on that server (whereas .html dont create any problem) so is there anything to do with .asp which could create problems ? any connection limits ?...

Windows Media Server
my Hosting service (Hostway) offered Windows Media Server at the time. I wanted visitors to have the ability to quickly stream .wma's, so I went for the cost. now...I'm unemployed; & money is real tight...so, I was thinking of dropping Hostway...going over to GoDaddy; & switching my means of musical delivery to .mp3's. So: 1) How much slower is mp3 streaming from a conventional server than .wma from a dedicated server? 2) Is there a way to speed it (mp3) up (save decreasing file size)? 3) Will .wma's stream without the dedicated server; & if so...how is that implemented? I really need to save money in this economy...but I don't want my listeners to suffer. Is that possible?

PHP On Windows Server
I'm about to deploy a site that needs ASP for the main application, but my client would like to use phpBB for their forum. I initially thought we'd have to get two hosts, one Windows and one Linux. But in doing some research, I see that some Windows hosting providers also provide PHP, and I am aware that PHP can be installed to run on IIS. My question is: is PHP under Windows any different that PHP under Linux? Are there any weird work-arounds that have to be dealt with? Or is it simple and straight-forward?

(Hardare is: Intel Xeon 2.50 GHz Quad Core). (b) How about licensing. I found this Microsoft page for "SPLA" licensing: [URL]... But just like everything else from Microsoft, it is rather confusing at first sight. Can anyone tell me in a few words how to best get a license for a single server with Windows? And also, where to download Windows Server software. (c) Do we need a license key in order to INSTALL Windows on the server?

Windows Server Capacity
I am trying to develop plans for my small 'datacenter'. My Question is how many shared hosting users (sites) can be on one server. While this question is broad, please assume a general distribution of users (sites) and the following server configuration (and lets ignore the datacenter network/uplink for the meoment): Xeon Quad Core 5410 processor 8 GB RAM Windows 2003 or 2008 Server O/S How about if a mySQL database is added (to the same server?) I recently started looking at some of the panel systems and it seems that a typical configuration is 'all-in-one', that is a Web Server, Database and email server - do these perform well? Is there any rule of thumb for Windows servers such as zz MB Ram per user; # of users per processor; # of user per processor core?
