VPSByte Fraud "Protection"

May 18, 2007

I use a company called VPSByte for basic unmanged VPS service. They are asking me to scan a copy of my drivers license as well as my credit card and post it on their private support page for fraud protection reasons.

I think this is rather absurd. Is this normal? I'm not doing it, I think it's stupid, never mind that I don't have a scanner.

I have been with them for about a week now and have opened about 40 support tickets.

I think they are great with the managed hosting , they have a 1 hour response gurantee and the live support is very friendly.

I also upgraded plans which went smoothly.

I found the best VPS Host! I came accross VPSByte.com and I just loved them. They helped me from selecting a plan, setting up my account, and other issues I had. Their support is friendly and fast. Also, they have a lot of different plans to choose from and I found just want I needed. I am kinda new at VPS and so they helped me out a lot on getting started. They offer a lot of services and features. I love the many different control panels they offer. They treat me like a friend and guide me through the solutions to my problems. I would really recommend this host to everyone. The site i have with them is emeraldfeathers.com.

I am happy with my current host (SolarVPS) and also have some kind of liking for Futurehosting.

I have just seen some really good offers for VPS from VPSByte and was considering hosting a friends sites with them.

But because I have no experience with them, I'd like to know whether there are any VPSByte customers here and what your experiences are with them, good and bad.

What I want to know is in these criteria:

- Speed (I've tested and it seems OK because my Friend is in US),
- Performance,
- Stability,
- Support (How newbie-friendly are they because my friend is more of a newbie than myself)

VPSbyte Dead

May 28, 2009

I've ordered dedicated sever the AMD4200 at vpsbyte last Thursday, exactly a week ago, but status on my client page is still pending, during a whole week i sent 4 emails with 1 response - a promise to set up server in Monday, and that's 3 days ago. Gee i am so pissed off i had to set my project to idle and loose money. Their website is totally outdated to 2008 and buggy as hell, that kayako support thing doesn't work at all, general support is offline 24h, MSN is offline, 1h response means maybe 1 week response if lucky.I don't really grow my money in trees and i really need superfast connection to my dedicated server for reasonable price...

I feel robbed, should i report them to authorities for scam? or they are just out of business?

My VPSByte Review

Jun 11, 2007

My VPSByte Review.

I started to write a long review detailing the hellish experience I had with VPS Byte. But I think instead, I will just summarize with this.

VPS BYTE IS AN UNLICENCED, ILLEGALLY OPERATING OPERATION.

The State of Oregon, City of Portland and Multnomah County all require business licenses to run your business inside the state, city and county.

On their home page (vpsbyte.com) at the bottom, they say:
Copyright 2006-2007 VPSByte LLC. All rights reserved

If you call the Oregon Secretary of States office, you will see that, no such company (LLC) exists or is licensed to do business in Oregon. (Oregon Secretary of State: 503 986 2200)

On their "About us" page, they say:
VPSByte, maintained under the ASC Group of Oregon

Again, no such company legally exists in the state of Oregon.

If you pay them with Paypal, the payment really goes to: selectbyte.net. Once again, there is no company licensed to do business in the state of Oregon named Select Byte. Apparently Camron does business under many other names, none that I can find are legally registered.

That business address is in the city of Portland, Oregon. If you call the city of Portland:
(503) 823-4000

You will see that there is no business registered under any of Camrons names are licensed to do business in the city of Portland or Multnomah County.

Rather than continue on with my experiences, I suggest that you simply decide if you want to do business with an unlicensed "company".

[Review] VPSByte.com

Apr 19, 2007

Currently I'm hosted with VPSByte.com. They specialize in high quality VPS and Dedicated servers.

I bought a cPanel VPS from them a while ago and so far have had no problems at all with them. The prices are fantastic and the support (Should you need it...not often) is absolutely great. I've had an answer within an hour every time and they're always happy to assist you any day of the week.

Always making their services better and better VPSByte has been proven to be one of the very best, if not, THE best VPS provider I've ever seen. I'll definately be staying with them for as long as humanly possible!

I'd rate them *****/***** (5/5) and would recommend them any day.

What Anti-Fraud Measures Do You Use

Sep 30, 2009

Over the past number of years there has been an obvious increase in credit card fraud and identity theft.

Our policies have always tried to stay a step ahead but it seems no matter what is done the occasional fraudster manages to squeeze through, costing us a lot of money. At one some point in early 2009, it got as bad as 60% of the orders we received. It ended up eating a LOT of our time just to go through each order and verify them as best we could.

What methods do you use to fight fraud?

I'll start with some of the things we do.

- Require CVV code on the credit card
- We call the customer's telephone number and verify with them. - Verify the telephone number matches the region of the address they provide
- Require the CC issuing Bank's name and number
- We often require the customer to fax a signed credit card authorization form
- GeoIP matches location of the address in the order

Obviously the big challenge is proving that the person placing the order is the actual owner of the card. I've received the correct CVV, spoken with the customer on the phone number, had the phone number match the region... non-US so I wasn't able to verify their telephone details with the issuing bank. Had the GeoIP match and still found out it was fraud.

On a side note: Am I the only one that feels banks and those issuing credit cards need to take more responsibility for a system that's clearly broken? Even after going through the process above, it can still be fraud with a chargeback issued. In those cases, the company loses the money they made, pay a fee to the payment provider, lost time for Sales Reps and Tech Reps, and of course they lose money on hardware, electricity and bandwidth.

Increase In Fraud Orders

Jul 28, 2009

Anyone else see an influx of fraudulent CC orders with all valid information? Even the IP of these orders matches or comes close to matching the address. What's in common is that email correspondence reveals Asia-based IP addresses and the phone number never checks out.

Could this be due to the recent Network Solutions breach? I've never seen so many fraudulent orders with nearly everything checking out.

How To Fight Phishing / Fraud Sites In Free Hosting Server?

Aug 30, 2007

I run a Free web hosting service on my server with XPanel script installed. It has around 47K accounts in all. Recently i started getting mails from e-bay, banks and many other institutions regarding the Phishing sites operating from my server for cheating their customers / members. Though i removed them but i have to do it manually and after getting mails from them.

Now that i dont want any more such site to run from my hosting site, What are the options available for me in order to check all accounts automatically and remove any such site on its own? As there are 47K accounts and 100+ new signups each day, it is not possible to check all accounts manually.

I want any script / addon which can check all possible Phishing / Spamming / Spurious / Fraud sites and intimate me/ delete them upon request. Any person using such services? I need your guidance + support.

Looking for some fast and effective answers from experts here.

Hostnine Afiiliates " Scam, Fraud "

Oct 5, 2008

I joined Hostnine.com affiliates program and within the first two months of pushing their services I had made over 2800 dollars in commissions. Whats the problem you might ask. They don’t pay. They don’t answer their phones and when I went to their forum to ask a question about the affiliate program I was banned in 1 min after asking. I tried online help but the guy who works for online help has alot of excuses. I will make sure everyone knows about this rip off scam so people like me can avoid this company altogether. I’m not the only one who was taken. After I couldn’t get him to answer me in repeated emails i googled hostnine scam and many other ways to see if their we others.

Of course their are, someone he owes 6500 dollars and even employees of his company begging to get paid so they can pay their bills. Their were also customers saying how hostning had canceled their accounts after three months for no reason. Even customers who had canceled and were still being charged via credit card. at the last ticket Ben gabler the owner of the company said that the check has been sent out to my country..

But i didn't send any address for my country. So, how did he get it?

VPSSell Review - VPSSell Fraud - VPSSell Scam

May 3, 2008

Just wanted to post a quick review on VPSSell.com. This is a 100% horrible company to do business with. We originally chose them to help launch our new GlobalWebX free hosting service, which was supposed to have fully launched by now. They were a new company, but had good prices, and the owner (mdshah) seemed to be active on WHT and cared for his customers. I know what it's like having started several new hosting companies, and I knew that just because a company is new does not mean it is no good.

So, we signed up for a VPS from VPSSell.com. It took a couple of days to setup the server, but once it was up, it ran very well. I had a couple of setup questions for VPSSell.com, and they were very helpful in answering them. All went well, so we purchased a LayeredPanel license, and paid to have LP install it on the server. This took a couple of days, and then we spent some more time painstakingly putting finishing touches on the Website, server configuration, LP configuration, and forum.

On April 29th, I received a notice from VPSSell.com stating the following:

Quote:

VPSSELL Network Maintenance Advisory - Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 -

6AM-10AM EST WINDOW

VPSSELL Network Engineering will be performing maintenance in our

Philadelphia POP during the hours of 6AM and 10PM EST on Wednesday, April

30th, 2008. At this time, VPSSELL Network Engineering will be

performing a significant upgrade to our existing network infrastructure. This

upgrade will involve replacing our core switching equipment, with newer

Cisco™ equipment, and implementing a new network design---allowing for

easier upgrade, higher fault-tolerance,

and extra redundancy. This work is expected to minimally impact on our

client base, however, we like to advise ahead of time when working on

the core of our network. There may be momentary periods of higher than

normal latency while circuits are re-routed, BGP updated/reloaded, or

cabling switched, but there is no overall outage expected.

This maintenance is necessary in order for further growth of the

VPSSELL network, as well as to implement additional redundancy into the

network--including the turn-up of new fiber/transit in the Scranton

facility from XO™ Communications (shortly after this maintenance is

completed).

Regards,
VPSSELL Technologies.

Fair enough. Sounds simple and straightforward. Unfortunately, in the mid-afternoon of April 29th, the server went completely down. I was alerted to this by an associate of mine, who was working on configuring the forum at the time. I told him about the maintenance alert, and assured him it should be back up by the next evening (I just assumed the maintenance had started early).

So, the next day, at 10 PM EST, late that evening, the site was still not back up.

Figuring there may have been a few hitches in getting things running, I waited until the next morning (May 1). At this point, many other VPSSell.com users were posting on WHT and mentioning the same problem. None of their servers had come back up, and they (and I) were now very concerned. We contacted the user mdshah on WHT (again, he owns VPSSell.com, and appears to be the only employee) through private message, and heard nothing back. We (I and other VPSSell.com users) tried again and again to get in touch, and still nothing. Finally, on May 2nd, the user mdshah posted the following in a thread on WHT (but he did not reply to any of his customer's PMs!):

Quote:

Someone abused the server & the server got suspended. The data center said that they had sent us abuse alerts but we never received it. When we asked for mail logs they replied that the mail were bounced & we never got alert & the server got suspended. We tried to convince them for 2 days but we couldn't get the server back. Finally, we have ordered for new servers & will setup all VPS accounts in 24 - 48 hrs.

We are not cheating any customers, you will get your services back. We greatly apologize for the inconvenience caused to you.

Some people has opened paypal disputes claiming SERVICE NOT RECEIVED. This is not good as we always tried to provide you our Best services but someone did mess with our business.

Thanks.

Am I incorrect in seeing a problem where the manager/owner of a service has his service go completely down and does not reply to his own customers (many of whom - like me - are paying $50.95 per month for service!) for 3 days??? The server has been down for over 4 days now, and still no promise of a refund. mdshah is also pretty much refusing to cancel anyone's account. I have threatened to sue (and will follow through with this, to recover the $50.95 as well as other damages related to no access to the server, and to cover court costs).

Basically, I can say that VPSSell.com is a scam - and I really recommend you stay away from them. From now on, I will go with trusted companies - who care about their customers.

Another tidbit: [url] - over 9 hours of downtime in late April.

DDoS Protection Or Not

Apr 24, 2008

Is bound to happen to my server one day or another (get attacked). So I need help deciding whether to get a DDoS protection server now or later. Or pay as I go (I'll explain this in a bit).

First of all I am considering getting this because I want to use this server to hide the real source where people are downloading from. People connect only through FTP server and download. Of course if I give the real IP away I am subject to attack at anytime from anyone.

I think if I buy a server somewhere else and have people connect to there then that server will connect to the real server if I was to get attacked the server I bought "somewhere" else would only get attacked which would or would not be protected by a that special company who protects for these kind of things.

Only downside so far is I have been able to have the method above done. A person connects from one server which connects to the real server they will be downloading from BUT I use up to 2x bandwidth. Because when someone requests a file from server A...server B sends to server A then sends back to the user requesting it. A process that well works but anyone know if instead of sending back to Server A it will go directly to the user without exposing any info on the real server?

When I meant "pay as you go" I mean have a server with a DDoS protection company but don't get any protection until it happens rather than waiting on the last minute before switching to them (like adding new users now but those users knowing the real source).

These "users" downloading do about 106GB average. So you can see how big a downside is having to use 2x of bandwidth from the method I know above. The companies I am on do not have DDoS protection that I know of so I am forced to look for external companies to use to connect to the real source.

-So far everyone knows the real source IP but that is because I trust them. Anyone else is waiting to get on it and me looking for ways to put them on.

//hopefully you enjoyed my big paragraphs.

-And what kind of "protection" would I need if only FTP is being used since there is "specialized" kind of filtering on attacks.
