VPS For Hosting Downloads/Media Files

Aug 30, 2007

I have a little project for a website that contains some of Downloadable files
and Media Files!

In my calculation..., I may use about 50 GB storage
and if the number of visiors is as what im expected i'll need 1 TB bandwith or some less!

==
let's talk about the hosting part here
i know that there are some companies that over more than 300 gb storage and more that 3 TB of traffic!

but i don't think they are going to work with my project so... i searched for a vps to start my project ..., and im thinking in dedicated server in the future..,so let's not talk about the future right now!

I want to talk about the ability of vps for downloads hosting!
the vps I've found is this one:

Disk Space : 60,000 MB (60 GB)
Number of Domains : Unlimited Domains
CPU Limit : Equal Share
Guranteed Memory : 512 MB
Burstable Memory : 2048 MB
Monthly Bandwidth : 2,000 GB
Included Control Panel : cPanel / WHM

Where To Host Files That Will Get 100's Of Thousands Of Downloads

Mar 18, 2009

I have a file that will probably be a few megabytes in size that will be downloaded 100's of thousands if not millions of times.

Where would be a good place to store this file?

Are there any big file hosting companies out there you've used or can at least recommend for this sort of thing?

How To Upload Media Files Directly To S3

Apr 21, 2008

We are using EC2, this EC2 is already linked with S3 for uploading the back of database.

We are using PHP script for this and its working fine. Now our developers want to upload media files directly from Client PC to the S3. This should be without disturbing current EC2 . We have implemented the uploading functionality through Flash. It will be great if you could tell us a way.

Large Media Files & Backups

Jul 16, 2008

I've been using Lypha for the past 4 years, but they've taken the last straw (gigabytes of backups went missing and they wont reply to emails as to why).

Looking for a web hosting package for under $10/month that has large enough disk-space/bandwidth to allow me to backup large audio / video files to it, as well as the normal site operation (I use it for portfolio website, as well as hosting additional domains)

Media Hosting

Apr 22, 2009

Hopefully this will be a quick and fairly simple question. I already have my site hosted with another provider and very, very happy with the service.

However, i want to add video support to my site. However the current provider i use doesnt have the functionality i need (FFMPeg, etc).

So what i am looking for is a reliable host who will store, convert/encode my files and then stream them for a decent prices. As it will be a new feature to my site im not looking at spending a fortune to start with (i know, how many times have you heard that?) but will be happy to upgrade capacity as and when.

Im not interested in fancy cPanels or bogged down features for "Web Hosting" which i will never use. I just need a host that can store, encode and stream my media (i will handle the scripting side. Ideally they would be located within Europe, but thats not 100% nessesary.

Media Hosting/Amazon S3

Feb 1, 2008

we recently launched a site that has a you-tubeish clone to it, none the less the media progressive download bottlenecks the the rest of the sites functions beyond video...

I've been looking into solutions with moving the files elsewhere.

I was looking at Lime Light Networks but they were $1/gig, granted i'm sure their service is great but we're currently moving 3tb and have been going up around 500gb every month. So we really can't afford that.

I just stumbled on Amazon S3 and that looks real attractive, has anybody used their services or know of a site that does that I could test it out.

And the last stupid question, I'm trying to figure out how it works, they make it sound like all you have to do is put a CNAME in your zone, but I need the video clips to be put there as they're uploaded...

UK Media Hosting (mp3/avi) - No Databases Or Php

Jun 4, 2008

I have most of my sites on the very reliable clook.co.uk but I only only get around a Gig of bandwidth per month per site.

I'm thinking of getting an unlimited hosting package so I could upload client's music files, large images, video clips etc.. Nothing is illegal or adult. Then I could host my sites as normal at Clook and then point to all the very large files being hosted at the new place.

I think I'd get about 10Gig of traffic max a month. And as it'll just be an extended online harddrive I've no real need for databases, email, php, cPanel etc...

I've seen some unlimited offers at hostpapa.co.uk for 4.99 a month with a free domain. Is there a catch? What do you recommend?

Media Temple And Hosting

Apr 23, 2008

They really have an ideal plan for me with their grid service. But I wanted any recent customer views on them, before I make my mind up about going with them for hosting.

Also if you don't think Media Temple is good can you provide someone who is?

I have been reading this forum all night now. And I'm just clueless still as to who would be good enough to go with. I don't want to make a wrong decision. I would prefer something with 10Gb or over not fussed on the cpanel or bandwidth as long as they have good support and are efficient. Also my budget is around the $20-$25 bracket.

Media Temple Grid Service Hosting With Clients

Oct 18, 2008

I currently own a reasonably sized VPS paying around 40/$80 a month for it. I am extremely happy with the service but I have recently move from freelance to being hired by a company.

I wish to scale down my costs so looking at other options.

I hear a lot (mostly good) of things about MT and was wondering what peoples experiences are - particular with ease of use, support and uptime.

I would also like to know about how the normal shared hosting option works for people hosting some clients website and email. I currently have around 10 clients hosting with me and 100 emails. Is it easy for clients to use and i assume pop and imap are supported.

I currently run my VPS on cpanel. would it be easy to transfer everything or is it very much of a manual job?

Bad Downloads From Softlayer In LA?

Mar 12, 2008

My clients in LA - those on AT&T and Time Warner in paticular - are having bad download speeds from my server with Softlayer. Anyone else having similar trouble? Clients who normally get 500-700kb/s down are getting < 50 kb/s down, even early in the morning when the total traffic on my 100mbps port is under 1.5mbps.

Basically, east coast is fine, and anyone with a T1 in LA is fine as well - it's just DSL and Cable modems in LA that are screwed up. In fact, one of our are clients is using Apple Remote Desktop to connect to a remote client with a T1; it's faster to through Time Warner, then VPN to Verizon, and then connect Softlayer and back again than to go directly from Time Warner to Softlayer, which is really weird.

Slow Downloads

Apr 28, 2009

I own the website [url]and it's hosted at Host Excellence. Recently there have been some downtime periods, and most importantly, I have noticed that downloads are very slow. For instance, when I download a file such as [url]I get an approximative transfer rate of 100-150 KB/sec (whereas most other sites download at 500 KB/sec or more). First of all I'd like to know if you guys get similar results, and what do you recommend? I have contacted my host about it, they seem to deny the problem. Should I switch? What to? I need something reliable and fast.

I send an email to datacenter about this issu and they sayd:

Code:

Dear Mr Yarmohammadi,

I just checked the switch configuration. Could you please look for the
configuration of the network card in your server and if it is in 'Full

If not, please try and configure it in this way, maybe it already is,

Mp4 Videos And The Downloads Made From Cellphones

Oct 29, 2009

I have a problem with some mp4 videos and the downloads made from cellphones.

I have a plain LAMP server (centos 5, apache 2, php 5), the customers download the videos from a web, mobile section, and play on their cellphones.

The strange thing is that when they opened the video to play it on the cellphone, the video shows itself as a binary, although the extension remains mp4.

Tried moving the same video to another server, and it was played ok without any changes.. so, tested another server and after making this changes, it was able to reproduce the mp4 format:

I changed the Default mime.types from text/plain to application/octet-stream

TypesConfig / etc / mime.types

# DefaultType is the default MIME type the server will use for a document

# If it can not otherwise determine one, such as from filename extensions.

# If your server contains mostly text or HTML documents, "text / plain" isnte

# A good value. If most of your content is binary, such as applications

# Or images, you may want to use "application / octet-stream" instead to

# Keep browsers from trying to display binary files as though they are

# Text.

#

DefaultType application / octet-stream

When the videos out in binary, with a lot of strange characters, leaving just this: application / octet-stream

I see in /etc/mime.types and there is support for many formats, including. Mp4

However, on the original first server even if I change the above code, I can not reproduce mp4.

On any laptop or pc from the three servers I can reproduce the videos, the problem it’s just on one server playing from cellphones.

WHMCS Breach - Some 3.5.1 Downloads Were Compromised

Jan 8, 2008

I just received a fairly scary WHMCS notice, you can view the details here:

<<please don't paste the file names, there are accounts that may have these on them>>

What are your thoughts on the entire situation? Personally, I'm a tad fearful (luckily, I hadn't upgraded to the next version yet as I was letting the other users play beta-testers) given the fact that there wasn't any versioning / modification 'notification' system in place on their end.

I'm fearing further updates. In essence, my concern is that the WHMCS development team isn't entirely certain how they were backdoored or to what scale they were backdoored.

Are their own billing systems & servers hosted in the same environment, were our billing details also released? etc. I want to know the scale of the attack.

Web Host That Support 'resume' For Large Downloads

Apr 4, 2009

I have a problem in that I sell somewhat large download files, and Hostmonster told me their servers don't support 'resume'.

So if my customer has a power failure, etc., during the download, he'll have to start all over again.

So it looks like I'm going to have to move my download files to a different server.

Can anyone recommend a good host that will store my digital downloads and, that, most importantly, support 'resume'.

Review: MediaLayer For PHP/MySQL, PacificRack For Downloads

Mar 9, 2008

I thought some might find this short review useful. I recently found my website - vladstudio.com - pushing shared hosting limits fast (powweb.com at that time). After long days of (unsuccessful) searching for ideal hosting (fast, with lots of traffic, managed, and of course cheap :-) ), I got good idea from my wife and splitted my website into 2 pieces hosted separately.

For domain, PHP and MySQL, I've been using MediaLayer Application (shared) hosting. I might already mention it here before - I'm extremely happy with them, once my site hit digg.com frontpage and I got 500000 visitors in a day, and hosting did not go down! Right now, it serves about 25000 visits (500000 hits) a day, every hit being dynamic PHP page with several MySQL queries.

For hosting images and downloadable files, I use PacificRack dedicated server (most basic one, but with 2000 Gb/m traffic included). I am very bad at managing servers, but default configuration and my modest knowledge of Linux was enough - it is only used to store files that visitors download from vladstudio.com.

So, if your site is growing out of shared hosting too, consider 2 separate hosting accounts for application and files - it works very well for me. And once again, big thanks to MediaLayer and PacificRack.

Long Curl Downloads Delaying Other Connections

Dec 4, 2007

I've tried Lighttpd and Apache. Server is QuadCore 1 cpu.

Either one when I have one long curl download occurring in Firefox, and open up another window to connect to the site it waits until the curl process completes.

In Lighttpd I have php 5.2.5 fastcgi and xcache.

There is no errors. It simply just waits until the process is completed and 1 second later the second request (2nd browser) starts.

Code:
fastcgi.server = ( ".php" =>
( "localhost" =>
(
"socket" => "/tmp/php-fastcgi.socket",
"bin-path" => "/usr/local/php5/bin/php-cgi",

"bin-environment" => (
"PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN" => "16",
"PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUESTS" => "10000"

Moving Files From One Hosting To Another

Aug 7, 2008

I'm trying to migrate my vps to another server, and basically I need to move the entire public_html directory from first server to the second. As its almost 2.5 gb, downloading and ftping isn't really an option, so I'm thinking i need to tar and then gzip it, and then somehow transfer it diectly.

so my question is what is the proper command to use for tar and gzip in this case? and what method to transfer. should i use wget or is there a better way. Once i have it on my destination server how do i untar it, and what path will it untar to?
