Apr 8, 2009

I ordered a new server from iWeb a few days and after I transfered everything and was stating to set everything up I noticed that I as only getting about 1/2 of my download speed from both of my iWeb servers.

Is anyone else experiencing slower then normal downloads from iWeb?

Normally I could max my connection out at 2.1 MB/s now I can only get about 800 KB/s - 1.0 MB/s

Slow Downloads

Apr 28, 2009

I own the website [url]and it's hosted at Host Excellence. Recently there have been some downtime periods, and most importantly, I have noticed that downloads are very slow. For instance, when I download a file such as [url]I get an approximative transfer rate of 100-150 KB/sec (whereas most other sites download at 500 KB/sec or more). First of all I'd like to know if you guys get similar results, and what do you recommend? I have contacted my host about it, they seem to deny the problem. Should I switch? What to? I need something reliable and fast.

VPS Incredibly Slow, Huge Numbers Of Slow MySQL Queries For Plesk/Watchdog

Nov 11, 2008

I've got 25 domains on a Virtuozzo/Plesk8.6/CentOS5 VPS. Each domain has one up-to-date install of WordPress, most have very little traffic (average 200mb per month), maybe 2 domains get 5-7gb traffic per month.

I monitor port 80 connections and rarely see more than 10 at a time.
That should in my opinion be no problem at all for a VPS with 768mb guaranteed ram and 2.4ghz cpu. I've got 30gb hard drive spare too.

But.... about 8 or 10 times a day it grinds to a complete halt: server load at 500-1000%, sites timing out, plesk takes 3mins to load, often I can't even connect with SSH, and the plesk web server, apache

INSERT INTO module_watchdog_sys_stat (time, type, value, service_id) VALUES(FROM_UNIXTIME(1226404705), 'MAINMEM_USAGE', 17472, 11);

80 seconds sounds like a huge amount of time for a MySQL insert to me! Does anyone know if this is likely to be the cause of my trouble? Some problem with Plesk and the database? Or could it be something else?

Bad Downloads From Softlayer In LA?

Mar 12, 2008

My clients in LA - those on AT&T and Time Warner in paticular - are having bad download speeds from my server with Softlayer. Anyone else having similar trouble? Clients who normally get 500-700kb/s down are getting < 50 kb/s down, even early in the morning when the total traffic on my 100mbps port is under 1.5mbps.

Basically, east coast is fine, and anyone with a T1 in LA is fine as well - it's just DSL and Cable modems in LA that are screwed up. In fact, one of our are clients is using Apple Remote Desktop to connect to a remote client with a T1; it's faster to through Time Warner, then VPN to Verizon, and then connect Softlayer and back again than to go directly from Time Warner to Softlayer, which is really weird.

Incomplete Downloads

May 18, 2008

My site is hosted on siteground, and i offer a few mp3s for download on my site. But, when my visitors download the songs, only a part of the song is downloaded, not completely. Siteground says this problem is about the apache server limitations on the http protocol downloads.

Can any user defined apache handler be defined to increase the http timeout value? I am on shared hosting.

Port Configuration For Downloads

May 28, 2008

My new server speed seems very low. The downloads are taking too much time. While downloading the os templates I am getting the download speeds in the range of 30K/s - 40k/s (Max 100 K/s)

I have another server in this DC and havent this problem on this.

I send an email to datacenter about this issu and they sayd:

Code:

Dear Mr Yarmohammadi,

I just checked the switch configuration. Could you please look for the
configuration of the network card in your server and if it is in 'Full
Duplex'
mode?

If not, please try and configure it in this way, maybe it already is,
because the switch just changed to 100 MBit FD in automatic configuration
mode.

I have 2 mbit DSL connection at home and I can download files with 90 kb/s from the server. I also see the same speed on a 100mbit port server. But I can download files from RapidShare with 210 kb/s..

What do you recommend me to do make faster downloads from server-side?

Mp4 Videos And The Downloads Made From Cellphones

Oct 29, 2009

I have a problem with some mp4 videos and the downloads made from cellphones.

I have a plain LAMP server (centos 5, apache 2, php 5), the customers download the videos from a web, mobile section, and play on their cellphones.

The strange thing is that when they opened the video to play it on the cellphone, the video shows itself as a binary, although the extension remains mp4.

Tried moving the same video to another server, and it was played ok without any changes.. so, tested another server and after making this changes, it was able to reproduce the mp4 format:

I changed the Default mime.types from text/plain to application/octet-stream

TypesConfig / etc / mime.types

# DefaultType is the default MIME type the server will use for a document

# If it can not otherwise determine one, such as from filename extensions.

# If your server contains mostly text or HTML documents, "text / plain" isnte

# A good value. If most of your content is binary, such as applications

# Or images, you may want to use "application / octet-stream" instead to

# Keep browsers from trying to display binary files as though they are

# Text.

#

DefaultType application / octet-stream

When the videos out in binary, with a lot of strange characters, leaving just this: application / octet-stream

I see in /etc/mime.types and there is support for many formats, including. Mp4

However, on the original first server even if I change the above code, I can not reproduce mp4.

On any laptop or pc from the three servers I can reproduce the videos, the problem it’s just on one server playing from cellphones.

WHMCS Breach - Some 3.5.1 Downloads Were Compromised

Jan 8, 2008

I just received a fairly scary WHMCS notice, you can view the details here:

<<please don't paste the file names, there are accounts that may have these on them>>

What are your thoughts on the entire situation? Personally, I'm a tad fearful (luckily, I hadn't upgraded to the next version yet as I was letting the other users play beta-testers) given the fact that there wasn't any versioning / modification 'notification' system in place on their end.

I'm fearing further updates. In essence, my concern is that the WHMCS development team isn't entirely certain how they were backdoored or to what scale they were backdoored.

Are their own billing systems & servers hosted in the same environment, were our billing details also released? etc. I want to know the scale of the attack.

Web Host That Support 'resume' For Large Downloads

Apr 4, 2009

I have a problem in that I sell somewhat large download files, and Hostmonster told me their servers don't support 'resume'.

So if my customer has a power failure, etc., during the download, he'll have to start all over again.

So it looks like I'm going to have to move my download files to a different server.

Can anyone recommend a good host that will store my digital downloads and, that, most importantly, support 'resume'.

Review: MediaLayer For PHP/MySQL, PacificRack For Downloads

Mar 9, 2008

I thought some might find this short review useful. I recently found my website - vladstudio.com - pushing shared hosting limits fast (powweb.com at that time). After long days of (unsuccessful) searching for ideal hosting (fast, with lots of traffic, managed, and of course cheap :-) ), I got good idea from my wife and splitted my website into 2 pieces hosted separately.

For domain, PHP and MySQL, I've been using MediaLayer Application (shared) hosting. I might already mention it here before - I'm extremely happy with them, once my site hit digg.com frontpage and I got 500000 visitors in a day, and hosting did not go down! Right now, it serves about 25000 visits (500000 hits) a day, every hit being dynamic PHP page with several MySQL queries.

For hosting images and downloadable files, I use PacificRack dedicated server (most basic one, but with 2000 Gb/m traffic included). I am very bad at managing servers, but default configuration and my modest knowledge of Linux was enough - it is only used to store files that visitors download from vladstudio.com.

So, if your site is growing out of shared hosting too, consider 2 separate hosting accounts for application and files - it works very well for me. And once again, big thanks to MediaLayer and PacificRack.

Long Curl Downloads Delaying Other Connections

Dec 4, 2007

I've tried Lighttpd and Apache. Server is QuadCore 1 cpu.

Either one when I have one long curl download occurring in Firefox, and open up another window to connect to the site it waits until the curl process completes.

In Lighttpd I have php 5.2.5 fastcgi and xcache.

There is no errors. It simply just waits until the process is completed and 1 second later the second request (2nd browser) starts.

Code:
fastcgi.server = ( ".php" =>
( "localhost" =>
(
"socket" => "/tmp/php-fastcgi.socket",
"bin-path" => "/usr/local/php5/bin/php-cgi",
"max-procs" => 1,
"bin-environment" => (
"PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN" => "16",
"PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUESTS" => "10000"

IWeb Has Done It Again

May 27, 2009

I just received my 4th server with iWeb and I could not be more satisfied. After the problems I had with my first server with them I was so close to just saying to hell with them, but I decided to give them one more chance and ordered a whole new server. Ever since they have been running like a fine clock.

I ordered my second server in July of 2008 and since then I have had 0 downtime. Because of iWeb they have allowed my site to have almost 300 days of continuos uptime and counting.

I purchased my 3rd server in the beginning of April after I started getting some hardware failure possible emails, my account manager then Patrick Hanley was great, got me in a new server right away so I didn't have to deal with any possible hardware problems.

I saw there 10TB special and decided to consolidate some of my VPS's that I have around into 1 server. Again the order process was excellent.

I got...

2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo

2GB Ram

2x 320GB Hard Drive

CentOS 5

Cpanel

10,000GB Bandwidth

$144 a month

Which was only $5 more then I was paying for my pervious server with 3TB of bandwidth.

The server build time was about 2 days. I wish it could be a little faster but no big deal.

The only problem I have with iWeb is, then I call everyone that answers starts speaking french even tho I selected 9 for english at the menu. I just think since I selected 9 at the menu it should let the person know I selected 9 for english. Not a huge deal tho.

I would recommend them to anyone, total A+ in my mind and I will be a customer of iWeb for a very long time to come.

Iweb ....

Sep 18, 2008

Does anyone have any information or reviews for Iweb? I tried a basic search and couldn't see anything relevant. They offer some absurdly good sounding packages, but are also obviously overselling.

I found them when I ran a WHOIS for Leasticoulddo, a popular webcomic. But, what about their shared hosting?

Their basic package:
600gb storage
unmetered bandwith
unlimited domains
unlimited parked domains
zero downtime
99 cent domain names
$25 google adwords credit
500 email accounts
unlimited MYSQL

and then their fee schedule:
10 Years - $1.67 / month
5 Years - $2.99 / month
2 Years - $5.83 / month
1 Year - $6.99 / month
6 Months - $7.38 / month
1 Month - $7.77 / month

In other words, it only costs you $60 dollars more to go from 2 years to 10 years.

Any actual clients out there on this offer...

Iweb Support

Jan 18, 2009

I moved a web site over to iweb.com about 4 months ago. I've found them to be quite responsive to simply queries and issues - quite a change from the previous host I might say. Last week I ran an FTP download to perform a backup of all the material. After about 12Mb, the transfer was aborted and I could no longer access the site by FTP, or HTTP and I couldnt get email. The site is not down though as others can access it, but I cannot access it from any computers on my network (PC and mac). I chatted with support and they said they'd have to look into it - this was last Wed (1/14). I still cannot get connected. Further diagnosis from my end leads me to believe that IP was blocked due to the FTP transfer (I was able to duplicate this from a different IP). Apparently, the problem has been escalated to the sysadms but they are swamped and can't get to my problem. I figure unblocking the IP should be an easy quick fix. Perhaps understanding why it happened and how to rectify that will take longer.

My question to the group is, is this level of service normal for iweb.com, and are my expectations of a quick fix unreasonable?

In the last 48 hours i have sent 4 emails to Iweb's abuse department but received no response at all and the attacks still going on. I included the log files, a screen record video showing the site is submitting request to my site.

I also contracted live chat and they told me they will make sure this problem resolved in 18 hrs but i did not received any response or what so ever.

Iweb Sucks

I can't believe it %4#:-(

We have 2 servers with Iweb Technologies in Montreal and our main server is down since 2 days.

We had 2 disks in RAID and they tell us both disk broked. How can it be in same time? and it take so long to get a short job done
I am so upset.

Never go with a datacenter who is your provider/competitor in same time. We suspect them to try to ruin our business, I cannot see any other raison why.

Who wants our business I am ready to rent a dedicated server now
with Plesk ? You better have a strong and quick support.

IWeb Review

Jun 1, 2008

here is my review of iWeb, after all the problems have gotten worked out from here [url]It turns out when they did the install of cpanel, there was a install of PHP already on there and openldap was there before the install and caused a whole mess with cpanel.

After all that has been worked out i'm pretty happy with iWeb so far.

My Server:
Core 2 Duo E4600
1GB Ram
320GB hard drive
CentOS
100mbps port
3000GB bandwidth
cpanel

Sales is pretty good, although im not all there with this, having to have your account manager around to do anything with your sever almost. Ive gotten rather annoyed a few times because I was told to get in touch with my account manager for simple things.

There network is solid, I live in south florida and I can max my connection at any time of the day. I have a friend in utah with a 20mbps connection and he can max it at anytime as well. Ive been able to have the server push 50mbps + for several hours with no problems.

There portal is pretty simple, no softlayer but gets the job done, and is far more then I really need, bandwidth graphs are just about all I need.

All in all I would say they are pretty damn good. After my initial issues got fixed, I would recommend them to just about anyone now.
