Web Host That Support 'resume' For Large Downloads

Apr 4, 2009

I have a problem in that I sell somewhat large download files, and Hostmonster told me their servers don't support 'resume'.

So if my customer has a power failure, etc., during the download, he'll have to start all over again.

So it looks like I'm going to have to move my download files to a different server.

Can anyone recommend a good host that will store my digital downloads and, that, most importantly, support 'resume'.

How Do You Host Large Video Files And Support The Bandwidth

Feb 8, 2007

I've got a client who wants to host audio files... Here are the sizes:

50 x 75MBs
300 x 10MBs
400 x 5MBs

That totals 8750MBs or 8.75GBs... If he gets hundreds of visitors, it could end up being 1000's of GBBs or bandwidth.

I don't know what to look for to support so much bandwidth... Do you buy bandwidth? Are their special companies out their that host it for you?

Moving Large Sites From One Host To Another

Oct 4, 2008

I have to move some large websites from one host to another. The websites contain data about 1 - 3 GB, and my internet connection here is not that fast, so that downloading and uploading would take many hours. Unfortunately I have no SSH-Access to both accounts (old and new one), so I have to make it by FTP.

So I tried to make a tar file and moved it from the old to the new host. I made a tar archive of the whole webfolder (I used php to execute the shell commmands) and moved it by ftp to the new host. But now I´ve got troubles when extracting the archive on the new host: the extracted files are obviously created by the wrong user, so I can´t delete or access them by ftp.

So I´m trying to find other solutions to fix these problems. Maybe someone else had the same problems and could give me advice how to move large sites? Or do you know php-applications that can directly connect one host accout to another via ftp?

Transfer Large Sites To New Host

Mar 5, 2007

Compared to others my sites may not be that big but I have one site that is 5 gigs and another that is about 9 gigs. I was wonder what is the best or most recommend way to transfer these sites to a new host.

I tried downloading the whole site using FireFtp but always seem to get about 3rd of the way done and something messes up the conection. Are there any better tools or methods to do this.

I also have pretty large Dbs that I'll need to transfer as well.

Fast And Large HD Space Host For Cheap

Jul 28, 2008

Who knows a good host that offers PHP5, mySQL 5, and at least 1 TB of hard drive space for a cheap hosting account.

I am setting up a digital asset management tool and I need alot of hard drive space for a few of users to be able to download large image files.

Which is why i need massive amounts of hard drive space.

If anyone knows of anything, please PM me or post it here. I will be checking this thread periodically.

OH and by cheap I mean less then $100/month.

I would guess the server could be either VPS or Shared or if you know of a dedicated server company, then that would be awesome too.

Free PHP Host With .htaccess Support?

Sep 2, 2007

I'm looking for a free web host to host my portfolio. I need:

1) Php/MySQL Support
2) .htaccess support, so I can have search-engine-friendly URLs.
3) Preferably I'd like there to only be a text/graphic ad at the bottom of the page, or to be able to pay a small fee and have the ad removed. (No popups)

Is there any such host available, or can any of you guys here who sell web hosting set me up with one such account?

How Many Users Will My Host/site Be Able To Support

Feb 12, 2009

I know this sounds a difficult question, but any rough answer is better than none. I am sure there are rough expectations.

Will it be 10's, 100's, 1,000's, 10,000's etc.

I am looking at a dedicated server Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.0GHz, 1GB memory with network speed of 100mb (with gigabyte burst whatever that means).

[url]- bronze package - if anyone is interested)

I will run one site only. The site has very heavy database usage and normal page views with average images.

Video / most photos are hosted and delivered with a seperate, top-quality CDN.

Your answer might be... "You should get about 1000 surfing, using database etc. before you notice a slow down" etc.

I suppose the thing is.. at what stage would I need a second dedicated server / package upgrade / what will this server get me?

Fast UK Host With MySQL Support

Apr 18, 2008

I currently run a website which is hosted with storminternet.co.uk and, while I can't fault their reliability, the (lack of) performance is undermining the usefulnes of the website.

Key features of the website are:

- completely MySQL/PHP driven so the host needs MySQL support and processor power . Some of the MySQL queries are fairly complex and call upon multiple tables of large datasets.

- monthly bandwidth is much less of an issue than speed (if that's not an oxymoron) as the number of visitors is currently <250/day.

- most if not all of the visitors are from the UK

In terms of budget I would be willing to go £150+/year if the service was top quality.

6 Months At Zone.net , My Resumé (detailed)

Nov 20, 2007

Sometime around May I decided to have my website transfered over to zone.net as I outgrew Dreamhost.

Dreamhost, which now offers quite some cool setups (such as pimping up your server by additional ram etc), has kind of "chucked me" off due to excessive CPU use that was triggered by my Wordpress install (running WP-Cache of course).

I was told, I outgrew a shared environment and should opt to either switch to their (at this time) 360$/month plan or get another hosting provider. when asked what to get, I was told "a vps with plenty of ram".

I had a particular setup in mind and was thinking of either joining jaguar pc hosting or zone.net.

What I did like at zone.net at this point was the working live-support. I clicked "live support" - chat now and within seconds I was talking to someone who had a clue and cared about getting me to move over.

I opted zone.net as they promised to set-up my domain(s) in before of moving for free and making the transition happen without any downtime.

It worked this way, I sent my sql databases to them and uploaded a four gig rar-file to third-party server (always handy to have another one at hand). They downloaded everything and setup my VPS with CentOs, plesk and virtuozzo.

From my GoDaddy-domains I know there were plenty of discount codes around- as I couldnt find any for zone.net I blunty asked them if they had a promotion campaign running and if there was a zone.net discount code.

Their honest reply, which I appreciate, was "yes" and I was given the code to discount my setup and monthly fee by 10%. Seeing as I did not find any codes on Google, this was a good catch.

The transfer went smooth and the first weeks passed. Without any trouble, my site(s) ran smoothly, quicker than ever and with no downtime. Thanks to the watchdog module, that one employee installed, services that killed itself were automatically loaded again.

Ever since I moved my site to zone.net it has been growing prosperously with 15,000 visitors daily and increasing. Wordpress and WP-Cache are working smoothly, Permalinks with htaccess are operational, too.

When I had trouble setting up WP-Cache (at one point you have to run a shell command to create a sym-link file), their Live-support helped me out in seconds.

I really liked the free and high-quality support at zone.net and the polite, yet direct employees.

The advantage of "sticking" with a company with a dozen employees is that in due progress you get to know everyone and they get to know you. You dont have to explain your setup and problems all over again, as your setup is known and sending passwords over etc has become obsolete.

Amongst my domains are also two German denic (DE) domains, the setup of them is very annoying, as you have to observe all kinds of regulations (like specific TTL time), different class C ips etc. - zone.net has been so accommodating to setup those different C-class ips for free.

I am quite sure that I would have had to pay additional money at almost every other company.

At my VPS I had Plesk and CentOS running, what I did not know is that you SHOULD not (seriously!) try to update your VPS (plesk) manually.
I pressed "auto-update" under plesk, and the whole vps went into full-out lockup mode. zone.net´s experienced techies had the website up within minutes, but still plesk was unaccessible.

This was the case for a week roughly and I did not receive any email for one week. This really annoyed me, but who to blame? It was all my fault- if I had not played around with things it would not have locked up so bad (internal errors all over the place). I decided to wait one week for them to find a solution, as the website was up, I was earning good money with it (around 40$ a day) and I did not care about emails... since it was only a secondary email address.

yet I wanted to have my plesk back.- so one employee worked on my vps for two days in a row and tried all kinds of hacks. still I did not work. so without asking, and I appreciate that, they cloned my "running" site and setup another vps and routed all traffic over there. wow. I did not know this was technically possible!

anyway, I had my plesk back and every setting I had done, was input kindly by the zone.net tech-man. If I had to do this all myself I would have lost valuable time at university that (at this point) I did not have.

Just a few weeks ago I received an email saying that my vps (and basically) every VPS had to be moved, as zone.net had bought their own network or net of servers or datacenter, I cannot remember what it was, anyway... my vps had to be moved, meaning starting at "zero". A new vps was setup again, but since the ips changed, too I had to undergo the whole IPs annoyance with the german denic domains again.

luckily zone.net helped me out quickly and assured me things would work.

Indeed it did, the transfer went very smooth, as the old vps was not shutdown until the new one had been successfully "talking" with my nameserver.

Bad thing though was, that I lost several posts and comments, as in the meantime I was accessing (randomly) two different sites on different servers.

At one time, the old site loaded, the next hour the new one loaded and vice versa.

If you plan to transfer sites, you should not post anything and close comments. just as a matter of fact, that was my learning...

What I did not like about zone.net is that after the server move and in the meantime, they have seem to taken off the live-support. I loved to quickly address my problems and have them sorted out.

Now I have to reside to their (working!) ticket system, where I usually receive a reply within hours, but sometimes also days (but that´s my fault then again to not "bump" my tickets every now and then).

In general, I am very satisfied with the performance at zone.net, the level of support and the possibility of having almost EVERYTHING customized to my needs. I appreciate being a customer there, seriously! as soon as I experience something else, I will post it here, promised!

Downtown Host Setup And Support Review

May 29, 2008

I have recently left dreamhost in search of a more reliable and speedy host. The only thing I will be missing from dreamhost is their customer support which is very good. In fact I didn't think it could be topped by anyone...but I was proven wrong (at least so far).

So what host did I choose? Downtown host obviously (based on title : P). This is not a FULL host review, just initial setup and support which normally would be a huge ordeal for me without help.

Anyway, I bought my hosting a few days ago and requested a site transfer in their support ticket system. I was greeted within 10 minutes by the support team walking me through the steps I needed to take in order to get it going. Once I gave them the proper information, the transfer was done in under an hour for four-five sites. I then tried setting up the sites by connecting them to the new databases that they transferred my data into. Didn't work like I thought it would so I continued to mess around with it until I basically screwed up my initial database...oops. Another ticket to support and within 10 min I get a reply that they will transfer the sites and repopulate the database again for me. Very nicely I might add. No sarcastic emails because the dumb noob messed up his database or anything : ]

The new transfer was complete and I set up everything without a hitch (since I figured out what I did wrong).

All this was done through a series of around 20-30 support emails. Every one was answered often within minutes. None over 10 minutes. All were pleasant answers and none were snotty in the least. Thank you Jorge, Sabastian and Diego for helping me with the problems. Their support indeed beat the crap out of dreamhost's. I've rarely gotten a response that quickly.

My package is nothing to scoff at either. 5GB of space and 100GB of bandwidth for around 65+ a year. That's right a year. The sites have run perfectly so far and the speeds have been VERY fast compared to dreamhost's.

I'd say I am incredibly happy with my initial setup with downtownhost. I will post a follow up review in a few months addressing my experiences with reliability and such. I expect it to be another good review, as I haven't been able to find a negative one for downtownhost on WHT.

Shopping For Host To Support Multiple WordPress Blogs

Sep 26, 2009

I am using aplus.net to host a WordPress blog and want to create more blogs.

Since aplus.net took 26 hours to restore my blog when somehow it was corrupted (no explanation on what they did), I have decided I need to host it someplace where I have full control.

I would be prepared to reinstall WordPress on my own. I also want to have the ability to control redirects. aplus provides a handful of very weak tools for managing the site.

I'm looking for a host that would allow me to manage multiple domains, and multiple instances of WordPress. I'm prepared to manage the MySQL db (if I have to, though I would prefer it if I had support for this).

Bad Downloads From Softlayer In LA?

Mar 12, 2008

My clients in LA - those on AT&T and Time Warner in paticular - are having bad download speeds from my server with Softlayer. Anyone else having similar trouble? Clients who normally get 500-700kb/s down are getting < 50 kb/s down, even early in the morning when the total traffic on my 100mbps port is under 1.5mbps.

Basically, east coast is fine, and anyone with a T1 in LA is fine as well - it's just DSL and Cable modems in LA that are screwed up. In fact, one of our are clients is using Apple Remote Desktop to connect to a remote client with a T1; it's faster to through Time Warner, then VPN to Verizon, and then connect Softlayer and back again than to go directly from Time Warner to Softlayer, which is really weird.
