VAServ Unresponsive Billing

Oct 20, 2009

I can't say that I can recommend CheapVPS's (VAServ) services to anyone. In the end of July, I bought a VPS from them.

Had some initial troubles with the set up - they accidently set up 2 VPS's for me and set the wrong amount of memory, but that was solved by sending a support ticket. Wanted Debian instead of CentOS, another support ticket.

In the end of August, I canceled it - mostly because I didn't need it anymore. However, September already came and I was charged for the VPS. I sent a ticket to their billing department asking for a refund, and they gave it to me, no problem there.

I go on with everyday life, until October comes. I guess I forgot to cancel the PayPal subscription for my VPS because I'm charged for it once again. I promptly cancel the subscription and fire off a support ticket.

This time, they're insanely slow to respond to this. I sent a ticket in on Oct 1. and I get a response on the 8th: they ask me for a PayPal transaction ID. I send it to them, and I haven't received any reply since.

On Oct. 15 I tried adding a new comment to my support ticket, but I still have not received any response.

Today, I try to nag their live chat salesperson and they tell me that they've "added a note on my ticket for the billing department".

A2B2/VAServ

May 28, 2008

Just thought I'd pass on my experiences with A2B2/VA Serv to avoid anyone having similar experiences.

I've been a customer of theirs for several years now and the past 6 months have been awful. It started with them canceling a DNS hosting service they offered with out notification, leaving all my sites inaccessible for two weeks. Since then I've lost track of the number of times that my DNS records have been inaccessible. There have also been problems with their firewall denying access to my box, causing another day of downtime.

In fixing these issues, the support staff have continually shown lack of knowledge of the tools they're working with (from not knowing how to send out important announcements to people on their mailing list, to pressing the wrong button and overwriting my zone file with the default). Speaking to Rus has usually resulted in the source of the problem being located, but then it can take days for his support team to then understand what needs doing. The worst support was when Rus and team ignored requests for access to my zone files for months and then demanded I paid them an extra month's worth of hosting or they would switch of my site instantly. I have tried to find out if this was an isolated case or if others were having similar problems, but Rus refuses to allow me to discuss this issue on their own forums - presumably he know how many people have been affected and doesn't want that many people complaining publicly.

It's a real shame - it was a great company when I started hosting with them, however I think it's now grown too big for it's boots and can't provide the same level of service and reliability it used to.

EpicVPS (VAServ) Suspended My Server

Sep 27, 2008

Today i found out my server was suspended by VAserv without any notice beforehand. They sent me a email stating that i violated some policy as per email here:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The server was suspended for AUP violations. Your server has IRC chat software installed as the message clearly states that

===================
> I found these suspicious looking connections on the Undernet IRC Chat
> Network connecting from a netblock you control. The originating ip(s)
> and undernet server(s) each one was connected to is listed below. The
> destination port they were using is most likely port 6667. Other
> possible
==================

The Chat software that you are using may be using IRC as an internal interface for operation.

Regarding the supension, We suspend all the domains, vps, servers who violate our terms and conditions and comes under scanner for AUP violations without any warnings given.
------------------------------------------------------------------

i am not running any IRC clients/servers. The only thing remotely close is a Userplane webchat app that i'm currently installing, and that is a private chat script. So even after all this emailing back and forth, my server is still suspended. Very lack of respect for their customers. I'm preparing to move my business elsewhere, i've actually been waiting for this... just needed a reason, and now i have one. Since they took over EpicVPS.. my original 80gb allocated storage have been taken away... somedays i see 50gb , other days i see 30gb.. i suppose they are overselling which is causing the fluctuation, even though they claimed its backup storage lol. Anyhow... has anyone encountered this, do they have the right to lock me out of my own server without notice?

I noticed that since their acquisition of EpicVPS, there has been alot of attitude from staff and a lot less user friendly. Network lags alot more now as well. All downhill.

Unresponsive Dedicated IP

Oct 12, 2009

I recently purchased a Dedicated Server, and this is the first time I have ever used a Dedicated Server before, although I do have some experience with Linux. The problem I am having is that if you assign an Unused Dedicated IP to a domain using WHM the entire website that is assigned to that IP becomes inaccessible. I am able to ping the Dedicated IP, but that's about it. So the problem is probably that the Dedicated IP isn't pointing to the proper location where the website is, if you use the Server IP everything works fine.

So my question is what do I have to do to fix the problem and point the Dedicated IP to the proper location? Is it something that the Host has to do for you or is it just a simple file edit as root? I am using CentOS 5.3 64-bit as my Operating System with cPanel/WHM as my Control Panel.

Server Unresponsive ( Out Of Memory )

Apr 8, 2009

I've run into an issue lately with a few servers that I support and I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions on how to approach the issue?

Scenario:

The server will stop responding to new network connections, I can ping it, but nothing more. When the DC looks at the server, they find the error " Out of Memory " on the console.

What is a good approach to troubleshooting these?

Here is what I do, if I'm off base, I'm here to learn and will read

find / -name "core.*" -ls | egrep core.[0-9]

**try and find software failure

df -h

**validate disk usage

** check /var/log/messages /var/log/dmesg

If I can't find anything obvious in those places, I start digging through the access_logs and error_log to try and find a giant influx of requests that could have hit the server too quickly to process thus filling the memory up.

In this case, I adjust the rlimits.

*shrug* This is not fixing the issue on a few servers and I'm curious how other people approach this problem? Could this be hardware?

Unresponsive Server Mystery

Dec 23, 2007

I've been having this problem for the past week: everyday in the afternoon my dedicated server goes unresponsive for about an hour or so--you can FTP into it (upload and download work fine) and access the control panel, but it refuses to serve up any webpages / files through the browser (no one can access my site). Meanwhile the CPU / RAM seems to be just sitting there being completely unused. This problem just starts by itself and then goes away by itself somewhat regularly. Restarting the server has no effect on this.

I'm puzzled as to what the problem could possibly be or how I can fix it--any ideas? My server's running Fedora 6 / GoDaddy control panel.

Some Initial Impressions Of Fsckvps / Vaserv: Mixed--set Low Expectations

Oct 13, 2009

I had three VMs with Fsck VPS, dating back to before they got hacked in June. I've been paying the bill since then, I imagined as a kind of insurance, so that I had the VMs handy if I needed to use them in a big hurry. Last week, I tried to log in, and found that my three VMs didn't exist, anymore. As far as I can tell, the VMs haven't existed since the June break-in.

SETUP / PROVISIONING

My first reaction was "They've been billing me for three months, and providing nothing?!??!" I'll be honest, I was pretty tweaked, but after I'd calmed down I decided to see how they handled the situation. So I submitted a ticket asking for an explanation: How long had the machines been down for, and what would it take to get them back up and running?

It took about a day, but we eventually established that VAServ could build three new OpenVZ VMs, and that they would give me three months' credit for those three machines. Since I actually do need the VMs, and I didn't really want to fight about the billing, I decided to go for it. It took another day, but I did get three new machines up and running.

Unfortunately, I do have some complaints about the process, specifically:

- VAServ's technical support is very inconsistent, and different techs seem to have vastly different levels of communications skill and professionality.

- Many of the techs don't seem to bother reading your ticket, beyond the subject. They tend to only be capable of answering the first question in each ticket/email, and they ignore anything else you've asked.

- After the FSCKVPS/VAServ buyout, following the break-in, the HyperVM control panel was disabled. If you need a reboot, or a root password reset, or anything that you can't accomplish yourself by SSHing into the VM, you have to open a ticket. (Seems like a chancy proposition, now, to me.)

REBOOT-AND-PRAY

Today, I started seeing memory allocation errors in running programs. The machine mostly worked, but certain operations (shell scripts, in particular) would error out. I opened a ticket asking for some guidance, and within less than 10 minutes, the VM started rebooting. I got an update about the ticket a few minutes later, and was told that the VM had been reconfigured (increased memory allocation limit) and rebooted.

I was pretty mad about the no-notice reboot. I'd been in the middle of editing a bunch of configuration files, and I lost an hour of work. It just seems so unprofessional and inconsiderate for VAServ's technician to bounce the VM without confirming it with me, first.

I did get an explanation/apology from the tech who rebooted the machine. I asked him to have his supervisor contact me, which took a few hours, but I did hear back. The supervisor wrote:

"...we reboot the vps if we found any VPS out of memory. Normally most of the service stop working or access got killed when VPS is out of memory..."

To me, it sounds like the reboot is a standard procedure for a common problem. Given that kind of environment, it's only natural that the tech's first impulse would be to reboot, given a ticket about memory errors.

At the same time, it's also indicative of a bottom-of-the-barrel service, isn't it?

- Memory problems seem to be common--is that because they're over-subscribed? Does your 512MB allocation mean anything, or is it just talk?

- The staff can't / won't bother to read through a ticket and give it some consideration.

- The staff has an itchy reboot finger. Their first impulse is to power-cycle, rather than to try to understand and fix the issue directly.

FOR THE FUTURE

I do intend to continue using VAServ / FSCKVPS, at least for now. They're really cheap, about $10/month for a 512MB VM, and I can mostly get done with what I need to do. But this is a qualified opinion. I am solely using these VMs for simple R&D projects: Quasi-professional work, stuff that nobody is currently paying me to do.

Given my experiences so far, I would never trust these guys with a real, money-making business project. VAServ / FSCKVPS is suitable for toying around with, or if you're flat broke, but I wouldn't bet my job on them if I could possibly help it.

I'm setting a calendar reminder for myself, right now, to check back in another month or so with an update to this post. Assuming I'm still chugging along with these VMs, I'm going to make a point of posting my impressions on a regular basis.

Review: A2b2 / Cheapvps / Epicvps / VAServ Group

Nov 25, 2008

So... let's start my review, shall we?

I came into VPS business with EpicVPS, both Amaresh and Raghev (if im right), are excellent persons. Always helped me a lot and their service was overall great.

After some disasters xD, EpicVPS was sold to VAServ. I thought: Okay... maybe it's time to move BUT I should definitely wait a few months and watch how this is going to be.
So, stayed as a client.

I dont know how much months have passed, maybe 6? Dunno, but I do have to say a few things about Russell's company, VAserv.com:

I had some billing problems, specially when they changed to the other software, but all this was solved with screenshots (not that they doubt, just wanted to keep it clear), and in no time, I had it fixed. (Also had one billing issue, for some other reasons, which was solved and today Vladimir just made my day.. heh, not that he offered anything, but telling me kind words... made me feel good. )

Loads... Everyone knows that when you're using a VPS, sometimes you have some stupid users abusing the server , this way you'll get affected as well.

Happened a few times, and I was telling them it wasn't my VPS, etc etc (I've a pretty big vps, and always monitored so I can be sure that everything is running smoothly, this is also pretty secured). I didn't like when they once restarted my vps without asking, and load issue was still there. Again a few days later, they restarted again, like it was my problem. (And figured later that wasn't, but it happens!).

Anyway, this was solved, and their staff was really helpful on this, being really decent with me, just like it SHOULD BE in EVERY company.

Uptime... What can I say, it's true the VPS was rebooted a few times, but, besides that, it's great.

Staff... Always helpful, an extremelly fast support and lovely staff! Just like... hum, Kody, Vladimir... both awesome. (I consider them like business-friends. Honestly, they have helped me A LOT).

It's true that there are a few of them that still need some work heh, but overall, it's really really good.

Support... Extremelly fast and efficient! Top notch. Never saw a company like this.

Hardware... Top notch, NEVER had a disk issue, or something like that. Just like a dream!

Network... PERFECT. But really, just PERFECT. I'm living in Portugal, and I've about 40/50 ms to UK (I choosed UK, but they have other locations), the network is really fast (downloading at 1.7 mb/s from my home, no download accellerators). Also, never had a single downtime.

Billing... Good billing software now. Pretty organised, and simple. I like to keep it simple, easy to use. (And yes, I know that ubbersmith is a COMPLETE software xD)

Price... Excellent. I don't find any place with better prices. Even if I someday find one, I still WON'T move.

Other Issues... Had 2 IP's listed on SBL, reported it, and they already knew, then 2 weeks after the issue was solved. (Yeah yeah 2 weeks, but I emailed SBL and they didn't even answered me , so, vaserv did a great job.)

They just got me as a loyal client, and won't leave them for sure! Rus, great job!
I guarantee you that if you join them, you'll have an excellent service.

Overall:
Uptime: 10/10
Staff: 10/10
Support: 10/10
Price: 10/10
Total: 10/10

What do I want them to get better? Please... just keep providing this quality service.
Join them.

(Domain will be verified as I will submit through the Report button.)

So load under 1, almost no hard drive access, why is the ping so high?

Burton Hosting Totally Unresponsive

Jun 10, 2008

Has anyone had any more luck getting a response to either tickets or emails from Burton Hosting since the last thread here, which is months old? Our uptime remains decent, but with absolutely no responses to tickets (we have many outstanding by now) or emails (both to the standard network and support addresses and to individuals personally), and their phones disconnected, we of course are very concerned, and will probably be forced to look for a new host (I just hate the hassle!!) when our contract expires next month.

I did find in another forum posts about a Virante Marketing fiasco in which Burton was falsifying reviews, etc.---this does NOT sound like the Burton I knew before.

While we have exploratory emails out to DreamHost and a few others, I was hoping someone here would know a way to contact Burton---I just hate not knowing!

Apache :: Server Becomes Unresponsive With Wsgi Application

Nov 20, 2013

I have Apache 2.2 installed on Windows to host a web2py application using wsgi.

Apache crashed once stating it had run out of worker threads, so I inscreased ThreadsPerChild to 500. It has since crashed/become unresponsive without giving anything in the error log.

I set up mod_status, and am looking for understanding what I see when looking at server-status page.

It says 135 requests currently being processed, 365 idle worker. However I don't think there are 135 people connected.

Here's the request lines:

SrvPIDAccMSSReqConnChildSlotClientVHostRequest
0-1253840/0/0W138495448300.00.000.00
... the line above is repeated identically 125 times
0-1253840/32/32W000.00.460.46127.0.0.1dalgety-svr8.havelock.intGET /server-status HTTP/1.1
0-1253840/0/0W52400.00.000.00192.168.202.109dalgety-svr8.havelock.intGET /HubForms/ProjectFolderIndexing/index HTTP/1.1

[Code] ....

Question:

1) What are those 125 requests, and why are they not exiting. Are they anything to worry about? why is there no Client/VHost/Request? Could they be from the python process? Could they be what's causing the issue?

2) The Acc entry 0/121/121 on /HubForms/capacity_requests/index - is this representative of an issue?

3) When I restart Apache, it typically says "Terminating 375 threads that failed to exit" but that number doesn't match up with anything. Are these the idle threads?

Also I'm not sure what "restart" actually means, i.e. what stops and what stays (i.e. why am I on generation 0-12?).

4) Is any of this anything to do with why Apache becomes unresponsive, or should I be looking elsewhere?

Apache Frequently Unresponsive And Strage Error Log Entry Looking For Mdqt.php

Apr 11, 2008

Many a times websites hosted on my Red Hat Linux server would not open even though Apache and everthing else is up and running. When i hit reload on browser 4-5 times the website would load or i have to restart Apache and everything starts working normally.

Today when this problem resurfaced i did not restart Apache and looked for in apache logs and saw this strange entry in apache Error Log;

[client my.ip.xx.xx] script '/my/website/httproot/mdqt.php' not found or unable to stat

The above was in apache Error Log, above is my ip address, and i never requested a file named mdqt.php, in fact no file by the name mdqt.php even exist on my entire server.

I then looked for mdqt.php in error logs and saw several requests made for this file and from various IP addresses.

i understand this is what causes my http to die.

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: All Sites Unresponsive Until Reboot Happening Several Times A Day?

Jun 8, 2014

OSCentOS 5.6 (Final)
Panel version11.0.9 Update #61
The system is up-to-date; last checked at June 6, 2014 03:32 AM

I use pingdom to alert me when sites go down. It would happen only once every few weeks, and I'd just reboot the VPS from my provider's control panel, however in the last 24 hours it has started doing it more and more often. The only change I have made in this time is to delete a few unused web sites.

When I get alerted, I check the the domains and they won't load. I look at the plesk control panel page thought and that does work.

I can SSH in, but I can't see anything that might work in the messages log.

I removed the plesk control panel error as that only seemed to happen once and is not happening anymore.

I saw quite a few entries in the /var/log/secure log and so I added iptables rules to only allow SSH access from my own IP and to DROP all other requests. It seemed fine for a while, but after 12 hours it has started becoming unresponsive again until reboot.

Netdepot Billing

May 11, 2009

I have sign up for a dedicated server with netdepot in the beginning of the year.

After sign up i ordered an extra hard disk and a raid card.

It was not installed as i was expecting and i ordered a 3 rd hard disk.

The overall installation procedure took some days.

The nightmare is the billing.

I had used a special price with a special discount.

The first billing came without the special price.

The second billing came without the special price and without the special discount.

They forget to charge the 3rd hard disk. I had to remember them to be able to pay for it.

They have double charged the 2nd hard disk and the raid card.

They have refunded it.

2 months after the 3rd disk has been payed they are still asking for the money in spite of all the payments have been done from the same paypal account.

The first payments were not possible to be done by their billing interface which lead to a blank page.
Some of the first tickets opened came blank to me.

In some cases i had to clean the cookies to see something and in other cases that was not enough.

Beware of their billing department.

Diana in particular has asked me 3 times for the payment that was already done. The payment was done after i have remembered them that i have a 3rd hard disk and correct by email by 2 or 3 times the amount to be charged.

I pay after all is clear but 2 months later they were asking again for the same money.

I think that they donīt keep proper records of the received amounts.

They didnīt apologize for the mess.

Just one word of regard for Sailor with whom i have made the purchase agreement and that has at all the times helpfull on solving the things with his company.

The server is nice and the price was ok as well but in 4 years in hosting business i never found such a messy billing department.

Burstable Billing

I'm really confused about burstable billing. I'm hoping you guys can help me out.

I'm currently with Softlayer and I have two dedicated servers with 2TB of bandwidth a month. So far this has been fine for me.

I'm getting ready to move to a third server and therefore I'm looking at colo space. The problem is that they all seem to charge by the Mbps instead of by the overall bandwidth you use.

The bandwidth here in Austin is expensive (About $200+ per Mbps) and I have no idea how much I'd need.

Here's a sample of the last 7 days of traffic on one of my servers

Any idea how much bandwidth I'd need? Also, are these colos just screwing with me? Should I be able to find a plan that charges me by overall bandwidth instead of using bustable billing?

Billing Issue With Fluidhosting

Mar 18, 2009

I've been a client of fluidhosting for around 2 years.

In terms of support, performance and reliability everything was fine during those years.

Few days ago, on the 14th of march i asked to cancel my account as i wanted to move to a different host because of price issues.

I pay to fluidhosting on monthly basis, each month in advance until the renewal date of the next month.

My renewal date is the 2nd of each month. This means that on the 2/3/09 i paid to fluidhosting until 2/4/09.

On the 14/03/09 , i asked my account to be canceled.

That's where the problems begin...

Fluidhosting says that canceling accounts should be stated --30-- days before the renewal date. This means that you can basically cancel your account ONLY on the day you renew it, and basically, as i see it, they are forcing you to pay for another month.
FH claim it's in their TOS, and indeed it is. Though i can not be sure if it was there 2 years ago or not, but even if so , i find it very unethical they "force" on you to always pay for another month.

So I replied my ticket and they also know I having some problem with the server that support department had wrote to me. the next day I managed to solved the problem and replied to them no need their help. A few days later when I log on to the billing system failed due to my e-mail address was not on file. So I wrote the ticket to billing department before THU 9am GMT-5 EST, Friday till sun no responded. So I wrote to support with refer to billing ticket ID and support replied to me most department like billing work only in Mon to Fri 9am to 5pm EST GMT-5. In Monday afternoon, the billing replied said my server is cancel on 07 March 08, no payment due and my billing account closed even my server is still active.

There is nothing I can do about it. If you want detail can check my web site [url]or [url] which the billing department can made this mistake for very long reply time which I not happy wrote to customer service department that I spend a lot of time effort making the server work and also other department for hard work on trying to help me providing better service to me now waiting for their reply.

I decided that you all can look a last minute visit my homepage if not a blink of an eye 7 March 08 my server will be switch off by them.

Strato-hosting Billing Me Over $100

Jun 4, 2008

My contract with Strato-hosting expired three days ago, and two days ago I got an email invoice saying that they had automically renewed my contract for three months. (of which I had no warning) and I owed Ģ53.51. I asked to cancel and they claimed it could only be done at the end of the new three month contract, which would defeat the object of cancellation, because I would still have to pay the bill.

Are they legally allowed to bill me for hosting I neither want nor can afford?

Also, as a last resort, their T&C's say that if you use their hosting for porn they will terminate the contract without notice. If I were to do that, do you think I wouldn't have to pay? I really am desperate here.

IWeb Billing / Refund

Dec 12, 2008

I purchased a dedicated server from Iweb back in October, I was paying 134.00 a month, no setup, etc.. After 3 weeks, I decide that a dedicated server is not what I need, and cancel. I attempt to cancel, and basically have to deal with my account manager only, as no one on Live Chat, etc.. can help me for whatever reason. Iweb has a 30 day money back guarantee, I have been waiting nearly 4 weeks for a refund. During this time, I have been getting overdue notices as well as today getting an invoice that I had a "Successful Payment" to Iweb for 134.00$ (the cost of my monthly service.)

I have been in constant contact with my Iweb manager, who is "very disappointed" in the accounting department and will process the refund immediately. Now, he is going to "talk to his boss," to get things sped up.

Today, I log in to web chat to talk to him, and he is "busy," and will call me when the refund is complete.

All in all, the actual web service was good with Iweb, however, their business practices are the worst I have seen thus far. Everything is this round-about procedure which is painful to deal with.

My philosophy is, if I can pay YOU for your services immediately to get started, then YOU can pay ME just as quick. It wasnt like I could get my dedicated server started with a "I'll pay you as soon as accounting writes you check in a few weeks." Extend the same courtesy to me.
