Some Initial Impressions Of Fsckvps / Vaserv: Mixed--set Low Expectations
Oct 13, 2009
I had three VMs with Fsck VPS, dating back to before they got hacked in June. I've been paying the bill since then, I imagined as a kind of insurance, so that I had the VMs handy if I needed to use them in a big hurry. Last week, I tried to log in, and found that my three VMs didn't exist, anymore. As far as I can tell, the VMs haven't existed since the June break-in.
SETUP / PROVISIONING
My first reaction was "They've been billing me for three months, and providing nothing?!??!" I'll be honest, I was pretty tweaked, but after I'd calmed down I decided to see how they handled the situation. So I submitted a ticket asking for an explanation: How long had the machines been down for, and what would it take to get them back up and running?
It took about a day, but we eventually established that VAServ could build three new OpenVZ VMs, and that they would give me three months' credit for those three machines. Since I actually do need the VMs, and I didn't really want to fight about the billing, I decided to go for it. It took another day, but I did get three new machines up and running.
Unfortunately, I do have some complaints about the process, specifically:
- VAServ's technical support is very inconsistent, and different techs seem to have vastly different levels of communications skill and professionality.
- Many of the techs don't seem to bother reading your ticket, beyond the subject. They tend to only be capable of answering the first question in each ticket/email, and they ignore anything else you've asked.
- After the FSCKVPS/VAServ buyout, following the break-in, the HyperVM control panel was disabled. If you need a reboot, or a root password reset, or anything that you can't accomplish yourself by SSHing into the VM, you have to open a ticket. (Seems like a chancy proposition, now, to me.)
REBOOT-AND-PRAY
Today, I started seeing memory allocation errors in running programs. The machine mostly worked, but certain operations (shell scripts, in particular) would error out. I opened a ticket asking for some guidance, and within less than 10 minutes, the VM started rebooting. I got an update about the ticket a few minutes later, and was told that the VM had been reconfigured (increased memory allocation limit) and rebooted.
I was pretty mad about the no-notice reboot. I'd been in the middle of editing a bunch of configuration files, and I lost an hour of work. It just seems so unprofessional and inconsiderate for VAServ's technician to bounce the VM without confirming it with me, first.
I did get an explanation/apology from the tech who rebooted the machine. I asked him to have his supervisor contact me, which took a few hours, but I did hear back. The supervisor wrote:
"...we reboot the vps if we found any VPS out of memory. Normally most of the service stop working or access got killed when VPS is out of memory..."
To me, it sounds like the reboot is a standard procedure for a common problem. Given that kind of environment, it's only natural that the tech's first impulse would be to reboot, given a ticket about memory errors.
At the same time, it's also indicative of a bottom-of-the-barrel service, isn't it?
- Memory problems seem to be common--is that because they're over-subscribed? Does your 512MB allocation mean anything, or is it just talk?
- The staff can't / won't bother to read through a ticket and give it some consideration.
- The staff has an itchy reboot finger. Their first impulse is to power-cycle, rather than to try to understand and fix the issue directly.
FOR THE FUTURE
I do intend to continue using VAServ / FSCKVPS, at least for now. They're really cheap, about $10/month for a 512MB VM, and I can mostly get done with what I need to do. But this is a qualified opinion. I am solely using these VMs for simple R&D projects: Quasi-professional work, stuff that nobody is currently paying me to do.
Given my experiences so far, I would never trust these guys with a real, money-making business project. VAServ / FSCKVPS is suitable for toying around with, or if you're flat broke, but I wouldn't bet my job on them if I could possibly help it.
I'm setting a calendar reminder for myself, right now, to check back in another month or so with an update to this post. Assuming I'm still chugging along with these VMs, I'm going to make a point of posting my impressions on a regular basis.

I've been with XenVZ for about a day now, and thought I would share my initial impressions thus far.
I was looking for a cheap, basic little VPS to run a few simple services off of. I had raked high and low through these forums since I was looking for something located in the UK, with Xen virtualization for <£10/month.
I came across XenVZ in the advertising forum, and thought I would check them out.
Started up the Live Chat, and got through to Sean right away. I asked a series of questions and received prompt and professional replies.
I thought I would start out cheap, so I signed up for the £3.99 'taster' VPS (they have a 30 day money back guarantee, so can't really lose). Signed up around 8:10, received invoice 8:12, paid invoice right away and had the server details at 8:21. Whole signup process took around 11 minutes.
Even for a tiny VPS with only 64MB RAM, it performs fairly well. I am running a Ventrilo server inside Screen, IRSSI session inside Screen and Lighttpd server (serving a simple static placeholder page), and I still have around 20MB spare RAM.
The network seems pretty solid too, I thought I would test it out with a wget from a UK mirror service, the connection capped out at about 9.5MB/s.
If your looking for a UK VPS, I highly suggest giving these guys a check, can't fault them so far.
Of course, I'll be back in a month to give a more detailed rundown of the service.
I don't run a domain off the VPS but can provide the IP on request.

After considering and comparing VPS offers from Future Hosting, Knownhost, Wiredtree, and Liquidweb, I went ahead and ordered from Future Hosting.
I'll post my initial impressions, and try to update the thread over time.
I currently have a VPS at Godaddy, plus shared hosting at Godaddy, 1and1, and Namecheap.
My objectives were to get away from Godaddy VPS, set up with a 'better' provider, and consolidate sites.
I am fairly technically adept, though not an expert. My requirements are for hosting appx. 25 sites currently, with perhaps another 15-25 to be added over the next 12 months.
Most are low volume, a few are low-to-mid volume. Nothing fancy, primarily informational sites and affiliate sales sites (WP and Xsitepro), and some direct ecommerce.
I focused on the 4 providers mentioned above based on recommendations and reviews here and elsewhere. My main concerns are reliability and price.
After comparing plans and the specials listed on the 'Webhosting Offers' board, I settled on Future Hostings "Titanium" managed VPS offer. The special offer they listed was for 50% off lifetime cost.
Through live chat, I spoke with Nick to ask some specific questions. He was patient and helpful each of the 3-4 times I came back with questions.
One question I asked was how long it would take to get provisioned. He quoted me at under 12 hours - this was also mentioned on the "Offers" thread, specifically for the current special.
The "unspecial" price was $84.95 for 1Gb RAM, 650Gb bandwidth, and 50Gb disk space, with cPanel. I added Fantastico for $3.95. After the coupon code, I'll be paying $46.42 / month.
I put in the order at 10:04am.
Registration was activated at 10:50am.
Cpanel, Virtuozzo, firewall, etc. installed

An outstanding experience at the begining, disapointing this year, so that´s why I´m leaving them.
I bought a server on July 2007
1. I performed the migration on my own, did mistakes, and Zac migrated my site. He discovered Servstra, my current provider at that time, didn´t update 200 packages which were out of date. Zac updated all of them, installed a new kernel, and it solved the problem. Kudos here to Wiredtree
2. About 3 outages. On sep 2008 ticket PIE-852270, a power supply failed and server had a cooling issue, and went down 2 days, each day a few minutes. On dec 2007 ticket IJL-235362, my server switch had a power issue, site went down a few minutes. I used platinumserver manager and its monitoring service advice me on outages. All hardware problems were solved in a timely manner by WT.
3. I used to recieve quick answers from Wiredtree support ranging from 2 to 7 minutes. And solving my problems. Had the feeling of being safe with a very organized team and technical skilled.
4. I would rate them 10, I was a fan during the years 2007, and 2008.
5. For several months nothing important happened. I dropped PSM service.
6. Due to a new project, I needed a most powerful server, so I upgraded with Wiredtree.
7. They asked me to pay twice, once for the new server, and second for the older server next billing month period. Then, they would credit me the amount of money paid, minus days the migration take on server.
8. I didn´t want to be billed near 800 usd in a month. So I asked billing if the upgarde was possible without charging me twice. Because billing took time to answer, I asked to the sales department, and they answered me, it was possible.
9. It happened in the last day of billing period, starting the new one next day. Sales guy encouraged me to purchase new server to speed up the process. I did. But Billing replied me a few minutes after, there´s no way, so I was going to be billed for old server too. I got angry. I felt tricked by the sales guy.
10. The migration started. It took 2 days, and when I checked my mailing list database, no data was there. I got shocked. Even Zac replyed me, it´s ok not migrating that folder, because it was outside public_html. I got disappointed. I would expect from a managed server, take care of all migration details. migrating my data as is.
11. I discovered I weren´t able to connect to my server trough FTP. I asked support, even gave them details of my password. It took about 10 days to figure out a support guy, just a rsync will make work the ftp. So, the migration took 12 days.
12. Wiredtree wouldn´t give me the money amount of those 12 days. I talked to Customer service director, but according to him, if the migration took 12 days, then I will recieve credit back for the next billing period, minus those 12 days. I replied back, those 12 days were thanks to Wiredtree mistakes. But he didn´t move from his point of view.
13. I decided to leave, and canceled server. Customer Director called me to home yestarday to keep me as customer. I expressed, I can´t trust support guys, a new set that appeared on this year, because time response to the tickets went up to 15, even hours. And took several replies to solve my problems.
14. I felt warmed by him, but didn´t offer me credit me back the remaining 18 days to my credit card, so I´m loosing money here. Just in case I´m going back to Wiredtree in the future, then they would credit me the money, about 150 usd.
15. Actually I´m migrating to a new host, and propagating DNS
16. My last ticket IFM-287539 yestarday was replied 1 hour later, and not solving my problem. I resarched trough the internet, and solved it on my own.
17. I would rate Wiredtree a 7 for this last year.
18. Summing it up: outstanding service support on the years 2007, and 2008, but dropped the time responses, and quality of them on the year 2009.
I´d prefer not to disclose, neither my website, nor my name. I´m moving from Wiredtree and by this time, maybe DNS propagation is done. Wiredtree already know who I am. But if a mod need info about my site, kndly tell me how can I do it.

I have setup a new CentOS 6.6 server with Plesk version 12.0.18 and everything works as it should apart from the fact that in Filezilla the connection for domain1.com points to the httpdocs directory for domain2.com and vice versa. In the plesk filemanager and in a web browser the domains point to the right directory.

I would like to know as to what amount of expectations should one have when opting for a VPS.
i.e. what's the ideal kind of website that will work fine with a VPS ideal site in the sense that ... the bandwidth and resources (or other criteria) the site consumes.

Just thought I'd pass on my experiences with A2B2/VA Serv to avoid anyone having similar experiences.
I've been a customer of theirs for several years now and the past 6 months have been awful. It started with them canceling a DNS hosting service they offered with out notification, leaving all my sites inaccessible for two weeks. Since then I've lost track of the number of times that my DNS records have been inaccessible. There have also been problems with their firewall denying access to my box, causing another day of downtime.
In fixing these issues, the support staff have continually shown lack of knowledge of the tools they're working with (from not knowing how to send out important announcements to people on their mailing list, to pressing the wrong button and overwriting my zone file with the default). Speaking to Rus has usually resulted in the source of the problem being located, but then it can take days for his support team to then understand what needs doing. The worst support was when Rus and team ignored requests for access to my zone files for months and then demanded I paid them an extra month's worth of hosting or they would switch of my site instantly. I have tried to find out if this was an isolated case or if others were having similar problems, but Rus refuses to allow me to discuss this issue on their own forums - presumably he know how many people have been affected and doesn't want that many people complaining publicly.
It's a real shame - it was a great company when I started hosting with them, however I think it's now grown too big for it's boots and can't provide the same level of service and reliability it used to.

I can't say that I can recommend CheapVPS's (VAServ) services to anyone. In the end of July, I bought a VPS from them.
Had some initial troubles with the set up - they accidently set up 2 VPS's for me and set the wrong amount of memory, but that was solved by sending a support ticket. Wanted Debian instead of CentOS, another support ticket.
In the end of August, I canceled it - mostly because I didn't need it anymore. However, September already came and I was charged for the VPS. I sent a ticket to their billing department asking for a refund, and they gave it to me, no problem there.
I go on with everyday life, until October comes. I guess I forgot to cancel the PayPal subscription for my VPS because I'm charged for it once again. I promptly cancel the subscription and fire off a support ticket.
This time, they're insanely slow to respond to this. I sent a ticket in on Oct 1. and I get a response on the 8th: they ask me for a PayPal transaction ID. I send it to them, and I haven't received any reply since.
On Oct. 15 I tried adding a new comment to my support ticket, but I still have not received any response.
Today, I try to nag their live chat salesperson and they tell me that they've "added a note on my ticket for the billing department".

The term Managed Services concerns me with the way it is tossed around in the industry and I am curious to see what other hosts refer to as managed services, how they implement them and also what the consumer expects to receive on a managed server.
In going over one websites description earlier today they had more than five pages devoted to managed services and in my opinion said nothing. In fact at one point they mentioned their backup power, which while I will agree with that it is very important, that is infrastructure and IMHO has nothing to do with backup services.
Anyway I am interested in your view and definition of what you expect to receive on a managed server.

I'm experienced with various flavors of Unix but haven't taken the VPS plunge yet. My main fear is that I'm going to end up spending a lot of time managing the server, especially security. I'm leaning heavily towards a hoster that's well regarded on this forum but was surprised when I learned the default managed VPS they deliver is fully open. It also sounded like it was mostly up to me to do the hardening. I've seen the really helpful "HOW TO: Secure and Optimize your VPS" article and I'm okay carrying out these steps initially but all of this makes me wonder:
1) Shouldn't a brand-new managed VPS come completely closed and leave it up to the user to open the few services they need?
2) How much security work should I expect a managed hoster to provide up front and on an ongoing basis?
3) How much security work should I expect to put in initially and ongoing to keep this site running smoothly and securely?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting this to be "fire and forget" but I don't want running this server to become my day job. And after all, with my current shared hosting package I don't have to do *anything* - other than the occasional outage, it just runs.

However, I haven't seen any reviews on VPSEmpire since the takeover. Is anyone using VPSEmpire since vaserv and Russ has taken ownership?

Today i found out my server was suspended by VAserv without any notice beforehand. They sent me a email stating that i violated some policy as per email here:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The server was suspended for AUP violations. Your server has IRC chat software installed as the message clearly states that
===================
> I found these suspicious looking connections on the Undernet IRC Chat
> Network connecting from a netblock you control. The originating ip(s)
> and undernet server(s) each one was connected to is listed below. The
> destination port they were using is most likely port 6667. Other
> possible
==================
The Chat software that you are using may be using IRC as an internal interface for operation.
Regarding the supension, We suspend all the domains, vps, servers who violate our terms and conditions and comes under scanner for AUP violations without any warnings given.
------------------------------------------------------------------
i am not running any IRC clients/servers. The only thing remotely close is a Userplane webchat app that i'm currently installing, and that is a private chat script. So even after all this emailing back and forth, my server is still suspended. Very lack of respect for their customers. I'm preparing to move my business elsewhere, i've actually been waiting for this... just needed a reason, and now i have one. Since they took over EpicVPS.. my original 80gb allocated storage have been taken away... somedays i see 50gb , other days i see 30gb.. i suppose they are overselling which is causing the fluctuation, even though they claimed its backup storage lol. Anyhow... has anyone encountered this, do they have the right to lock me out of my own server without notice?
I noticed that since their acquisition of EpicVPS, there has been alot of attitude from staff and a lot less user friendly. Network lags alot more now as well. All downhill.

moving my colocation (just a single 1U server) to another provider. Is it reasonable to expect to be able to pay the original provider a fee to ship the server to the new location for me instead of requiring me to fly to the DC to pick up the server and do it myself?

This is my review of my initial setup with Pacific Rack.
After the issues with the fire at TP, I decided to pickup another server at a different data center as an additional server.
I ordered a Supermicro, which is a quad core processor. The price was well within the range, the extras were all within range as well, except cpanel, which was $35.00. I'd rather see that at $25.00, but overall that was fine. Total price as $266, right around what I expected to pay.
Setup took a few days, right at around what I expected.
When it was delivered, I asked why I couldn't log into WHM. They told me everything was fine. After some communication and about an hour and a half they said that they forgot to install cpanel... That wasn't a good start.
They failed to meet expectations because of the following:
1. RDNS was not setup at all. I shouldn't have to request it be setup. This is small, but if I didn't know to check/ask, it would be a major issue in the future.
2. The box always fails to reboot and requires manual intervention. Why can't they fix that? or even address the issue?
3. cPanel was not installed properly and when I asked for help, they told me that the box was unmanaged and I choose the configuration. If it didn't work right out of the box, the fault was my own for choosing that configuration.
Alex said, "You have received a standard Fedora 64 bit install, that we downloaded just for you. What you need must not be included in the standard install, or the cPanel install.
If you want us to manage your server, then you will have to subscribe to our server management service which is $29/month with a 6 month commitment. Otherwise you can just google for the command to install an RPM, as I don't know if off hand, but I know its really simple."
Just to comment, if it turned out to be as simple as installing an RPM, then I would have just killed myself due to the shame of it.
Turns out after working with cPanel support, it was an install error, cPanel was not installed correctly. (Don't know if that is PacificRack's fault or cPanel's, but I know it's NOT my fault and I would expect the data center to get my server up and running properly so I could manage it)
My expectation was that I would be delivered a box that worked properly and if it didn't, PacificRack would help me get it working so that I could use it. It appears that PacificRack's expectation was they just install the crap, it's up to me to make it work. If the install is bad, I can just Google it.
I'm fine with managing a server, I have four years experience running serveral servers, but I am not able to debug install issues where the box NEVER worked properly in the first place.
So, in this area, they fail to meet expectations.
I also found their technical staff to be arrogant and unfriendly, though I'm personally arrogant and unfriendly, but I always am very nice to support people, no need to cut my own throat.
Overall, I'd say that my experience doesn't seem to be typical, but the fact that they were unwilling to resolve the issues really bothers me. I detest companies who hide behind "unmanaged" as a shield against providing the services that they should be providing as a data center. I also refuse to pay a $29.00 a monthly fee to get a managed server (basically a $180.00 commitment) to get them to deliver a working server, when that should be a "Free" service provided when I purchase.
The DNS servers are pacficrack work well and the connections are fast and reliable.
The server still is not working up to expectations and their support people seem to be unwilling to get it to meet expectations with out going "managed". Now, honestly, $180 would be far cheaper than any other options, but its the principle of it.
Overall, I'd rate pacificrack about average. The server is a good server and at a reasonable price. The support people where knowledgeable. The turn around on tickets was very good, no ticket sat for more than a few hours. It really seems like pacificrack is a very small operation. I think that is a big plus.
At this point, I'm not sure if I should just move on or continue to try and get this server to work properly. I'll make a decision in a week when the server is close to renewal.

So... let's start my review, shall we?
I came into VPS business with EpicVPS, both Amaresh and Raghev (if im right), are excellent persons. Always helped me a lot and their service was overall great.
After some disasters xD, EpicVPS was sold to VAServ. I thought: Okay... maybe it's time to move BUT I should definitely wait a few months and watch how this is going to be.
So, stayed as a client.
I dont know how much months have passed, maybe 6? Dunno, but I do have to say a few things about Russell's company, VAserv.com:
I had some billing problems, specially when they changed to the other software, but all this was solved with screenshots (not that they doubt, just wanted to keep it clear), and in no time, I had it fixed. (Also had one billing issue, for some other reasons, which was solved and today Vladimir just made my day.. heh, not that he offered anything, but telling me kind words... made me feel good. )
Loads... Everyone knows that when you're using a VPS, sometimes you have some stupid users abusing the server , this way you'll get affected as well.
Happened a few times, and I was telling them it wasn't my VPS, etc etc (I've a pretty big vps, and always monitored so I can be sure that everything is running smoothly, this is also pretty secured). I didn't like when they once restarted my vps without asking, and load issue was still there. Again a few days later, they restarted again, like it was my problem. (And figured later that wasn't, but it happens!).
Anyway, this was solved, and their staff was really helpful on this, being really decent with me, just like it SHOULD BE in EVERY company.
Uptime... What can I say, it's true the VPS was rebooted a few times, but, besides that, it's great.
Staff... Always helpful, an extremelly fast support and lovely staff! Just like... hum, Kody, Vladimir... both awesome. (I consider them like business-friends. Honestly, they have helped me A LOT).
It's true that there are a few of them that still need some work heh, but overall, it's really really good.
Support... Extremelly fast and efficient! Top notch. Never saw a company like this.
Hardware... Top notch, NEVER had a disk issue, or something like that. Just like a dream!
Network... PERFECT. But really, just PERFECT. I'm living in Portugal, and I've about 40/50 ms to UK (I choosed UK, but they have other locations), the network is really fast (downloading at 1.7 mb/s from my home, no download accellerators). Also, never had a single downtime.
Billing... Good billing software now. Pretty organised, and simple. I like to keep it simple, easy to use. (And yes, I know that ubbersmith is a COMPLETE software xD)
Price... Excellent. I don't find any place with better prices. Even if I someday find one, I still WON'T move.
Other Issues... Had 2 IP's listed on SBL, reported it, and they already knew, then 2 weeks after the issue was solved. (Yeah yeah 2 weeks, but I emailed SBL and they didn't even answered me , so, vaserv did a great job.)
They just got me as a loyal client, and won't leave them for sure! Rus, great job!
I guarantee you that if you join them, you'll have an excellent service.
Overall:
Uptime: 10/10
Staff: 10/10
Support: 10/10
Price: 10/10
Total: 10/10
What do I want them to get better? Please... just keep providing this quality service.
Join them.

I was thinking of getting a 512MB VPS from FSCKvps.com
I heard they have great uptime, and I want to host my main domain on it so it will be off from my own servers. However, how does FSCKvps manage to offer such high plans for such low prices? Is there hardware really powerful or do they oversell?

We needed a VPS off of our network for our web development portion of our company and so we decided to take advantage of a deal with FSCKVPS. They had an unbelievable special ($7.46 for 512MB). Now I can understand why I am having so many issues but I figured with the good reviews of the past I wouldn't have this many troubles.
First off, when I signed up their web site claims the following information: 70+ Operating System Choices, Remote Desktop Access, and "Rebuilding without having to contact us".
After signing up I soon learn...they only have 5 OS choices, no remote desktop template, and you have to submit a ticket to rebuild because they no longer have a panel for management.
Now since our development project required multiple OS choices and we would like to have had remote desktop for an application I decided to cancel and request a refund based on false advertising the first day of the VPS.
They responded not too long after saying they would take it to the correct department, this was about a month ago. Still no refund, and I even received another bill yesterday.
My tip to them was fix your web site before offering services, after this they removed the 70+ operating systems but they still have Remote Desktop Access and reinstalls without contacting us right on their home page.

While dedicated server providers are quick to promote that they support the server hardware how proactive do you expect them to be in terms of identifying hardware problems?
When hardware goes bad a customer might see performance problems and report it, or perhaps notice hardware errors in the logs.
Or is it the host's job to be monitoring hardware components status? Would you consider such monitoring to be part of the basic service or an optional management extra?
I'm interested in your expectations with a typical dedicated server.

I have been with FSCK since about Feb 11th. I do not use the server much as far as my website, since I have basically taken it offline for a bit while I get some time and remodel it. I have used the vps for extensive sandbox, and the vps has been online every since I first signed up.
For a value VPS they are great, good price, fast response, and super fast servers.
I just upgraded my plan to the 2nd biggest plan, and I figure I will stay awhile. I am no linux guru, but make do, but this is a completely non managed setup, and they do not offer cpanel or directadmin, so I purchased a license at buycpanel.com for $15/mo.
All and all, a great company, and I would recommend to anybody who can manage a vps, or is willing to learn.

I signed up for a personal use VPS with the sister company of VAServ.
I signed up for the £19.90 VPS 1GB Ram - 50GB Space - 850GB Bandwidth package
Network Speed:
Excellent! downloading a 100mb file took me less than 2 minutes on my Virginmedia connection (UK).
Support:
I had a few teething problems, and one incredibly blonde moment! and both tickets we're answered within minutes!!
Server Performance:
The server i'm on has 4 x 2.7 GHZ processors and the VPS just flies! i've only got FTP and E-Mail running on this VPS but it's incredible! no lag's, no problems! only problem I had was the Centos template didn't seem to contain /dev/random /dev/urandom but i've corrected that and asked them to add it to there knowledgebase which i'm sure they will do
For such a low budget brand, I wasn't expecting much - but I was suprised! excellent!
I'll post a follow up in a few weeks
I'll send the URL/IP to the mods for verification.

I'd like to ask linode.com customers if they're happy with their service.
Are the VPSes fast? Are there I/O problems? Bandwidth? etc.

I'll admit it, I am a bit of a geek. As soon as I saw the company name, I knew I had to have a VPS with them!
I have had my VPS since January 20, 2009. At various times it has served my personal websites (which are now sitting on another VPS) and VNC server. At this time, it's once again a VNC server, and is collecting backups from a client site.
I have nothing but good things to say about this company. They have a stunningly large selection of VPS images. Support has been wonderfully fast. I have had had great uptime. And, their price is absolutely terrific.
They were fast to provision, support is quick, price is great, and their name is cool
Of all the value VPS providers I have dealt with, these guys come out #1 or #2. They are great.

I recently went out on a limb and signed up for dedicated hosting with IndiaNets, a company that I'd never heard of in all of my years as a web developer. I found IndiaNets in my search for a host that offers multiple, non-sequential Class-C IP addresses. (I need this for SEO reasons.)
Normally, I like to either call or chat online with a host before I sign up to see how responsive they are and how they treat people. Prior to signing up, I had a couple of live chats with Vijay, and he was great -- quick to respond and very knowledgeable. I also asked for an account feature that was not specified on their web site, and he went out of his way to accommodate me. After the second chat, I signed up.
Since all of my 20 accounts had to be set up manually, I expected this to take a few days, but Vijay set them all up within 24 hours, and this was on a weekend! He was also online and available to chat over the same weekend, which was good because I had a few tech support questions.
So far, so good. Then came an email after a couple of days saying that there was an issue with one of the servers, and the hard drive would need to be replaced. While it's always an inconvenience when these things happen, they happen nonetheless. It's the nature of the business. What really matters is how the web host deals with the problem. I must say, I'm impressed with how IndiaNets handled this issue. They sent an email to all customers explaining the problem and how it would be solved, as well as the time frame during which it would be solved so that people would know not to make any updates to their sites during this time. They also set up a web page with frequent updates about the status of the issue.
In addition, I submitted a non-related support ticket while all of this was going on, and I still got a fast reply (within minutes, actually). Even though I had to wait until the server issue was resolved for someone to address my other issue, I appreciate that I still received a reply with an explanation of what was going on and that it would be handled as soon as possible. This is much better than submitting a ticket and having to wait for days to get a response. I appreciate some kind of communication, even if it's to say something like, "I got your message, and I'll help you as soon as I can." This type of customer service is extremely rare, especially in the hosting industry, and I just want to say thank you to Vijay and IndiaNets for being so refreshing.

Been using ML for 2-3 days now.
vBulletin's performance is a hell of a lot better compared to my last host (fasthosts.co.uk - which takes 60 seconds to give an error page!)
In addition, litespeed is pretty damn sweet.
Setup took maybe 10-25 minutes from payment.
Only problem I have with it is that SSH is a bit too locked down - wget/etc don't work, and sort of negate the need for me to use SSH in the first place.. (to get and unzip files without having to upload massive things)

I recently switched my dedicated server hosting from The Planet ($100/mo) to iWeb ($70/mo). I'd been with The Planet for quite a long time (originally Rackshack, then renamed to ev1, then bought by The Planet), and had been reasonably happy with them, but I'd been thinking about jumping ship for a while, for several reasons: (1) I was unhappy with EV1 for paying protection money to SCO; (2) my hardware was getting out of date; and (3) I thought I'd see if I could save some money on my monthly bill. I found iWeb because they were high up in the netcraft rankings, and netcraft showed them as running Linux. Searching the webhostingtalk forums for comments, I did find one long thread that involved one very unhappy user, but I wasn't convinced that his complaint was completely reasonable, so that didn't scare me off.
The dedicated server page at iWeb has a prominent offer of 1-hour activation on selected servers, but that wasn't an option I could use, because I wanted to use their cheapest configuration, which is a 2.4 GHz celeron, with 1 Gb ram, 160 Gb disk space, and 1500 Gb/mo. Since this was a step down from $100/mo at my old host to $70/mo at iweb, I was worried about quality of service and support, so I only signed a one-month contract. If you prepay for 24 months, you can get the same service at $52/mo. There was a setup charge of $49. Access to a web control panel would have cost extra, and they tried hard to sell me on that, but I didn't need it, since I'm comfortable managing everything via SSH. I got Debian installed on my machine rather than their default for Unix boxes, which is CentOS.
The first problem I ran into was that I made a mistake at one stage of the sign-up process, and although the interface did have buttons for backing up to earlier steps in the process, they didn't work for me. Starting over from scratch didn't work, and I finally had to put in a different email address in order to get a fresh start.
I placed my order by phone Wednesday morning, and got access to my server Thursday afternoon. Everything worked well as far as getting apache, mysql, and postfix set up.
IWeb is Canadian. Their pricing for US customers is in US dollars. They answer the phones in French, but everyone I spoke to was bilingual, and we never had any significant problems communicating. My credit card company's risk management thingie got triggered because of the non-US transaction, but that wasn't a big problem.
The big problem I had was that I was unable to log in to the iweb web site, which I needed to do in order to set their nameservers to point my domains to my box's ip. I put in the username and password, but the login page just refreshed. I started attempting to resolve the problem first thing on Friday, and ended up dealing with a total of six people before finding a solution at noon on Monday. In the interim, they offered to set the dns zones for me from their end, and that worked. Support was pretty bad. Sometimes I was able to get through to a technician on the phone in 5-10 minutes, but other times I spent ~1 hour on hold waiting to talk to someone. Email support generally received either no reply or a non-helpful reply. This was one of those typical, frustrating tech support situations where you keep on explaining the same things to different people, they promise to get back to you but don't, they send you canned email replies that don't address your actual question, etc. The long and the short of it seems to be that their login page had at least one known OS/browser incompatibility (with some versions of Windows+IE7), and one other, which was the one I had run into (with both Firefox 3+Linux and Konqueror+Linux). (I had javascript and cookies enabled on my Linux box, and in fact the cookies were being accepted, but the page just wasn't loading.) Tech #3 was unable to log in to my account on his own machine using my login info on Firefox+Win. The final resolution of the problem was that tech #6 suggested I try a different machine, and I found that it worked on my wife's machine with Firefox+MacOS. Go figger.
So in summary, their support is horrible, but basically I'm resigned to the fact that all webhosts' support is horrible. Maybe iWeb's is a little more horrible than The Planet's, but they also cost significantly less. The experience has been bad, but not bad enough to make me give up on the initial investment of the setup fee plus first month's service. I realize that at $70/mo they're working on a very thin profit margin, and I'm not under the illusion that they can afford to provide the level of support that would come with a $300/mo account. I'm going to stick with them for at least a while and just try really hard to avoid ever needing support.

I got hostpc after hostsimplex.com closed down.
They have been very helpful in getting my site back up and running. I had a few issues like unable to get the back up of my sql to restore so I uploaded the back up and they restored that for me. Nice guys.
An interesting issue came up which required me to have a symbolic link well could have gone with out it but would have made it so one of my sites was down for a few more days.
Basically the symbolic link allows 2 sites I run to have the same games with out taking up any more space on the server. Actually this was hostsimplex's idea and they created the link. How ever I could not restore that link or figure out how it was made to after opening a ticket with hostpc I got one made.
But not right away cuz I was first told it would not work, which had me kind of puzzled so I told them hostsimplex had that file so I know it works just I am not sure how they did it. Any way they did get a symblolic linke, 2 in fact one I could not delete and another one. I had them delete the one I did not need and got the other one working.
I will say they are very good people and very helpful. They even put up with my frustrating of things not going right which was not thier fault.
verification link is in my siggy.

1. Month
I used 15 days of godaddy's shared hosting before FsckVPS. Due to unexpected traffic, I had to move to a VPS. So I chose FsckVPS's 512mb packet.
I was very sattisfied with them. Their servers were fast and the VPS got setup in just a few seconds.
The hacking incident happened this month. I was still pleased by the way they handled it. So I decided to stay with them. They decided to give 2 months free after the hacking incident.
2. Month and 3. Month
Everything was very smooth, running perfectly. Servers were still fast after I got switched to a new one after the hacking.
4. Month
This is the second time I paid to FsckVPS and I was pretty happy about it.
Then I have been informed that they will be switching servers. They told that it would take around 4 hours per vps.
So when I noticed that my vps was down for the first time, I didn't react and waited. After being down for about 8 hours, I sent them a ticket. The response came after 4 hours saying that it was now online.
I logged in to my vps and the first thing I noticed was how SLOW it was. After a while, it crashed and I couldn't reach to my vps anymore. I sent a ticket, they reset the server, it got a little better.
This happened about 4 times. Everytime I sent a ticket asking why this is happening, I only received a response saying it is OK now.
After 3 weeks of being like this, I decided to switch to a new VPS provider.
Now I am on my new VPS provider, hoping for better results.
My fsckvps will expire in 4 days and it is still very slow.
