Supermicro 16GB Of 32GB Of RAM
I'm considering putting together a new set of servers... My primary goal is to have IPMI and 16GB of 32GB of RAM in a system. I'm wanting lower-cost systems. I don't need a ton of CPU or anything special on disk (2 SATA is all I really need). My previous generation of systems was PDSMI+ with 8GB RAM and they have been working great... but time to see if I can put together some budget 16GB of 32GB servers. Anyone have some combos of motherboard + RAM to recommend? (I'm open to Tyan or other server motherboards, even AMD or Intel)

Socket F <-> Socket 940 Heatsinks
If you have a socket F m/b, does a socket 940 heatsink works nicely on a socket F m/b? I can fit the original socket 940 heatsink on a socket F m/b but I am not sure whether there are any cooling related problems? According to the thermal design guide, it says: Quote: The heat sink, fan, mounting spring clip, and thermal interface material used for the AMD PIB thermal solution for socket F (1207) processors are the same as the heat sink, fan, mounting spring clip, and thermal interface material used for systems based on the socket 940 processor. Default Permissions 775
I was on a server (reseller account) that ran PHPSuexec and default permissions were 755/644 as they should be. We moved to a new cPanel 11 server and default permissions are 775/664. This is the same on 4 different servers from 4 different hosting companies (all reseller accounts). Three are CentOS, one RedHat Enterprise. I entered a support ticket for one company and they said the permissions were not right and supposedly fixed it (I have left that company since then so I can't check). The other hosting companies say their umasks are right and would not change it. Apparently the apache installation defaults to these permissions which, security wise, seems kinda strange. Can anyone shed some light on whether or not this is secure and does this mean I'm going to have change permissions evertime I upload files to install shopping carts, billing software etc.? (It's not hard it's just stupid to have to). Should my hosts change apache system umask (022) to make permissions default to 755/644?

Mid-level (1GB RAM) VPS With Strong Support
My university runs a website to help students find rentals in the general area. We recently ran into some billing issues with our current VPS host, and we're trying to move to a new VPS. I have some experience finding cheap VPSs (I use Slicehost for a 256MB RAM VPS), but this one has different requirements. Our current VPS provides us with 1GB of RAM, and we don't want to go below this. Also, the VPS we use gives great tech support to my boss (who only knows the very basics about technology). We'd also strongly prefer a VPS that comes with Cpanel. Does anyone have any recommendations for other VPSs that meet these requirements?

Intel Mobo Modification
I just picked up an Intel D946GZIS http://www.intel.com/products/mother...gzis/index.htm I've heard of many taking the higher quality motherboards and removing the audio post in order to fit into a nice SuperMicro case. Does anyone care of share their method of doing so? I was thinking a Dremel possibly, but I'd like to gather opinions as I'd like only to have to use this Motherboard as this will be a personal Dev server.

Installing An ATA Drive Into An Old IDE Mobo
I have this new 160 GB drive that I got from a friend and is in great working order. I can't install it in this machine (I would love to, but one of the ports on the motherboard is snapped off, so I can only plug in one SATA drive in at a time. So I've decided to put it into my server machine, just an old computer I setup with Linux and whatnot to be used as a network server if anyone needs to put anything on it. Plus, it's fun to toy with. Anyway, I ran into the problem that the motherboard is IDE, which means I can't plug it into my hard drive... Is there anyway (that won't cost me an arm and a leg) to plug in this new hard drive into an old computer? Or am I just out of luck? Incidentally, if anyone knows how to replace an SATA plug in, or knows of a cable that can plug in two cables which in turn plugs into the mobo, let me know.. that'd be awesome.

This is on a Debian VPS with Apache installed. I figured this forum would be more appropriate because I think this is an OS level issue. I'm running a basic php client / php server. The php script is requested by the web browser and connects to the php server on the backend. Apache And Socket
I've a strange problem with my flashchat realized on php and xmlsocket. I premise that chat works fine with 100 concurrent user. But When the number rises, and I've been to 350 users at the same time, something happens to the server which makes the whole thing freeze. After I eliminated just about everything that can go wrong with the php side of things, we came to the conclusion that this must be something related to the apache, since if before the php socket server went bad on account of an error, we simply needed to relaunch the php again, and everything would start up and work just fine untill the next crash. We have a unix server, using Apache 2, php 4.something or 5 (but again, problem is not there), did anyone knows what this could be? are we passing some limit of sockets connections Apache has that we don't know about? a limit of data transfer we are breaking? my script, when running and holding on to 300 users, use about 2-3 Mbit of bandwidth, nothing to get excited about.

Shared Hosting RAM Vs Virtual Private Server (VPS) RAM
I have a reseller shared hosting plan that allows for 50 sub-accounts and I'm using about 20. I am looking at getting a VPS with between 256 - 394 mb RAM and am wondering if I were to move all of my accounts to the new VPS would I be ending up with less RAM to use for all of my sites. To put this another way how do most reseller plans manage RAM usage? Do each of my sub-accounts have access to say 64 mb RAM so that if I were to use all 50 sub accounts I would have access to 50*64 mb. From what I've experienced and read with shared hosting my thought is I could end up with less access to server resources, CPU and RAM, with a VPS plan - though with VPS the resources are more guaranteed rather than being dependent on the usage of other accounts on the server. The reason I am looking at a VPS account is that I have a site that will likely have 1000s of users with a server intensive script (Moodle) and I know it would violate the reseller account agreement. So maybe my plan should be to keep the reseller account and use it for my database driven sites and use the VPS for the server intensive site and my html based sites. Also, my VPS choice seems to be narrowed down to Liquidweb, JaguarPC and Zone - has anybody heard of any negative experiences with Liquidweb? I can't find any.

What Is Best Socket Am2 940 Cpu
I am working on doing some various upgrades to my workstation computer. I got it back in Nov and have been adding to it every since. The motherboard was bad when I first got it so I had to buy a new one. I already had an athlon 5600 so I figured I would get the mobo for that. Upon advice from various people I got the abit kn9 sli, for socket am2 940 processors and nvidia nforce 570 sli mcp I am wanting to upgrade the processor now but I havent really found much info on what would be the highest level processor I could drop in. I know the phenoms dont work and some have told me that the athlon 6400 would be the biggest i could drop in but that isnt much more then I have now so would be no point. Selling A 4 Socket Enterprise Server
I have a somewhat unusual question for a hosting forum, but it seems to fit here reasonably well. I figure that anyone who does colo would know about buying and selling servers. Right now, I have a very high-end system, basically a Sun V40z: [url] It is fully configured with processors, memory, but only has a single hard drive currently. Missing Data In Server Socket Application
i developed a socket application to recive data from port.this application recvng data from a unit through port no 4444(Vehicle Tracking unit). this application recvng data and evrything is ok....but some times no anydata is coming in to this application.for eg:if application recves data 2 days after that 2 days it will recve one or two data only....again after 2 days it will recve all data correcly....that means lot of missing data we have....my question is whether this missing data is bse of my socket application or unit? The manufacturing company telling us unit is sending the data continuiously..but some times this socket application is not recvng data in 2 days interval....i dont know how to solve this issue....is any other setting is required in server to recve data continuously.... i think socket application 100% is ok...unit maufactures telling unit also sending data continuously...then where the problem is???can anybdy share ur idea about this?

Two Sessions Active At The Same Time With Same Socket Application
i hosted one server socket application in my dedicated server which is recving the data from different units(vehicle tracking system) through port no 4444.in dedicated machine i am keeping one active session always...that means my socket application exe is opened always in an active session ie sectionA.This session is not logged off insted i used to close the rdp for keeping this session active.Based on settings if userA accessing SessionA then userB cannot able to reach the active sessionA at the same time instead new sessionB will open for userB. now my question is if userB also opened socket application in SessionB with same portno ,then which soket application will recive data from the units...whther the applictaion from sessionA or from SessionB?

Difference Between RAM And Burstable RAM?
What is the difference between RAM and burstable RAM? What even is RAM! I ask because I upgraded my server (again) today. I went from 256 RAM, to 512, now to 1024 of RAM. Is 1 gig of RAM good? Softlayer Support Vs Theplanet Support
I'm undecided between an upcoming dedicated hosting server and am moving between Softlayer and ThePlanet. My decision partly comes down to support. I've read many reviews on WHT about both companies, but not necessarily comparing them from people who have experienced both. So my questions (keep in mind this is my first dedicated. Hivelocity Support, Or No Support
I've been with Hivelocity for 2 years. Occasionally we have problems, but it works. Their support staff can do very simple things relatively fast, however if you have some serious problems, e.g. failed disk and need to be replaced and do restoration from backup, it will be hell! They will NOT do what asked in Reload Request, delayed answer to chat, no answer to tickets for many hours. So far I'm very disappointed of Hivelocity support.

I have a question because I am a bit confused. On one of our servers we needed more RAM. So we ordered RAM from our provider and we paid. After 3-4 hours i get a reply the ram could not be added. (No explanation given) The server can handle 32GB ram and currently has 16GB. We added 8GB more but this is what they said: " The server will not post with anything over 16GB, even though the board supports up to 32GB. The server in question has 4GB of memory. This 4GB of memory has been replaced recently in order to solve this problem, with no avail. RAM For Cheap
I am shopping for servers with 32-64GB of RAM and the typical list price of $10/gbyte is not in line with reality (ie 4GB ECC DDR2 RAM can be bought for 70 bucks). I saw WebNX special offers between 2-300 dollars for 32GB machines, now that's more like it but, I cant really rely on special offers on the long run. As my application will be frontended by a CDN, network quality is somewhat less of an issue. Reliability and price is. So who be good a choice for machines with lots of RAM? Should I Upgrade My Ram
I'm in a vps with 512 MB ram now, my visitors per day is 10K and from top command, i just use about 200 MB. But, my vps is always got downtime everyday about 30 minutes. The CS said it is because my ram, the top command is not representing the real ram and recommend me to upgrade my ram to 768 MB. Should i upgrade my ram?

VPS: What's Using All My RAM
I'm running a vB forum (runemart.com), and my VPS has the following specs: ~666MHz CPU 512MB RAM CentOS 5.3 64-bit DirectAdmin In my VPS control panel, it's saying that I'm using around 350MB to 450MB RAM - this is 24/7, it never goes below 350MB. At the moment all I'm running is a vB forum, that doesn't have many memory consuming plugins (such as no shoutbox at the moment). Is it normal for a vB forum to use so much RAM? Is there any way that I can find out what's using the RAM?

X7DCL-i RAM
I have a X7DCL-i here.. Board works fine with my dual L5410's in it, posts, great. My problem is with the RAM. I have 4 4GB DDR2-667 ECC Registered DIMM's. The box posts with any one stick just fine, and the same with any 2 sticks. Whenever I put all 4 in, or all 4 and the 2 2GB's I have, the box won't post and just beeps. I called SuperMicro, and they blamed it on the revision of the board, and it only works with 2 slots. So the board has 6 slots but you can only use 2?
