Selling A 4 Socket Enterprise Server
I have a somewhat unusual question for a hosting forum, but it seems to fit here reasonably well. I figure that anyone who does colo would know about buying and selling servers.
Right now, I have a very high-end system, basically a Sun V40z:

It is fully configured with processors, memory, but only has a single hard drive currently. The system comes with a built in management processor and OS; from the console you can boot/restart the server, check which DIMMs or processors are working (or failed), etc. It has been barely used, and is in mint condition.
I'm thinking about selling it, because I'd prefer a smaller, more compact server.
Where do you guys go to sell servers? Based on listings here, the server seems to sell in the range of 20K, with a warranty of sorts (30 days):

Obviously, I can provide no warranty, but I have pretty much the same configuration.
It's meant to be a pretty high-end database server, and I just don't need this many horsepower.

Socket F <-> Socket 940 Heatsinks
If you have a socket F m/b, does a socket 940 heatsink works nicely on a socket F m/b? I can fit the original socket 940 heatsink on a socket F m/b but I am not sure whether there are any cooling related problems? Selling C Class IP Addresses To Forward To Our Server?
We are interested to buy different C class IPs so we can host many related sites on the same server. Our hosting provider does not sell different C class IPs. I wanted to know if there is anyway to buy IP addresses from somewhere else, lets say from other hosting companies, or private providers, who would forward the IP to our server. Did you ever hear of such service? Does any one want to offer us this serivce?

Missing Data In Server Socket Application
i developed a socket application to recive data from port.this application recvng data from a unit through port no 4444(Vehicle Tracking unit). this application recvng data and evrything is ok....but some times no anydata is coming in to this application.for eg:if application recves data 2 days after that 2 days it will recve one or two data only....again after 2 days it will recve all data correcly....that means lot of missing data we have....my question is whether this missing data is bse of my socket application or unit? The manufacturing company telling us unit is sending the data continuiously..but some times this socket application is not recvng data in 2 days interval....i dont know how to solve this issue....is any other setting is required in server to recve data continuously.... i think socket application 100% is ok...unit maufactures telling unit also sending data continuously...then where the problem is???can anybdy share ur idea about this?

Windows 2K3 Server Enterprise
experienced people in Windows 2003 Server edition then me. Now working for this client of mine seems they have much more problems then just a single hard drive issues as posted in another post. Now they also have a Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition on their server, which is activated but their Product Key fails every time they try getting an update like SP1, etc... Now, I'm guessing it's because their product key isn't the original or fake as they never purchased Windows 2003 but the tech they fired installed it any ways and got it working. So I went out and purchased an Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition (OEM Version) as it's cheaper and I had to build a system recently so that worked out pretty well. Anyways, using all of the tips on the internet to disable or deactivate windows worked well but when using the Activation Wizard and entering the new product key, it just comes back to the product key area again. So I've called Microsoft and the guy on the phone wasnt able to help me nor activate the windows. Question: Does anyone here have experience with Windows 2003 Server and would know why this is happening or know a fix? Do I have to reinstall the OS? If reinstalling, can I do it the same way as Windows XP that you select to install a new operating system, then select the partition, it detects the operating system on there and replaces the OS files only with the new ones but leaves everything in the same state, does something like this work or is available in Windows 2003 Server?

Enterprise Web Server Security
I'm in an environment where we have hundreds of users uploading content to a web site. With the current system, someone could potentially run a command that would wipe out hundreds of files (and it has recently happened). We are currently looking at ways to improve security and prevent "accidents" by separating the public server into to parts. A public server and a quality assurance server. Everyone would have access to the QA server, and the QA server would upload all changes to production. I personally see the benefit, but don't see the problem being completely solved. Does anyone have any advice on this or link to articles or books that might help to set up a secure web server structure?

Selling Blades As Dedicated
Does anyone sell (lease/rent etc) individual Blades as dedicated servers? I'm planning to branch into more rack dense colo services and wondered what the WHT opinion on this matter is. The way I see it, blades offer more redundancy, quicker provisioning and replacement in cases of failure, and lower costs, all of which would be passed to the customers. I would of course fully disclose the fact that they are blades, just wondering if it would matter to any buyers..

Selling Your IT Department On ISAPI
I update the corporate website for my company. Our server is IIS and when I need a 301, I have to send a request to IT to do it, as our pages are static .html and .shtml (SSI) and using javascript redirects is not ideal for SEO. A redesign we're going to be deploying, will include the shuffling of several pages/directories and redirecting of quite a few URL's. This fact alone seems to provide a good argument convincing IT that this is a good idea. From what I've read here and elsewhere, heliontech's solution seems to be the way to go. Since this is 3rd party, I'm looking to have further leverage to explain my case on behalf of using this. Are there benchmarks and data that support the reliability of this method versus the straight MS stuff? Also, I'm not real tech savvy on the server end, but I was told that our corporate site and application sites may reside on the same box and that applying the ISAPI rewrite would affect those as well. This would obviously make it a "no sell" with my IT colleagues. Would sites residing on the same server be globally affected by the ISAPI? If so, is there a way to circumvent this and just set the ISAPI for the one site?

How Good Is Using Whm/cpanel For Selling Hosting
I am doing some part-time work for a small web design company that is hoping to get some extra revenue by selling hosting to its customers after it designs the sites for them. They wanted to know what I thought about it, and so far I've said that it seems like getting a dedicated server (from a larger provider) for about $200/month would be a good fit. If they charged $20/month then they'd make it up after only about 10 customers, and they have many more than that. And with a dedicated server they could put a lot more than 10 accounts on the site. The thing they're worried about is having to actually administer all those accounts. The sense is that their clients are pretty low maintenance, but if you give one malicious user an FTP account into the server, they are (understandably) worried about that person's ability to affect the entire server. The dedicated server provider I have in mind provides WHM/cPanel for a relatively small fee, and my thought is that this could address that problem. So (having only used WHM/cPanel in passing myself), what I'm wondering is, is this the sort of thing where they could give users access simply by giving their customers a cPanel account, and not worry too much about security or configuration (keeping in mind that the dedicated host also has security people working)?

Ipower - Blatant Over Selling, Trying To Kick Me Off With Fake TOS
Ipower - blatant over selling, trying to kick me off with fake TOS I am currently being ignored on live chat with Ipower. They issued me with possibly the stupidest TOS violation imaginable. They claimed that I am using my web space for storing files which is not allowed - it must be site content. The links to the files are public on the site. They have admitted, actually admitted, that the TOS is fake. Yet they have just suspended my directories. The real reason is because they are over selling disk space. Our contract gives me 2 Tb and I am daring to use 25% of that space. They have told me - straight out - they want me off their server because I am using too much of what I paid for. Why do web hosts like Ipower believe that they can just ignore the law like this? It is false advertising, fraud and breach of contract. They have expressed their contempt for the law in plain English. What is it with these people? Why must I sue them to have this blatantly stupid matter resolved?

This is on a Debian VPS with Apache installed. I figured this forum would be more appropriate because I think this is an OS level issue. I'm running a basic php client / php server. The php script is requested by the web browser and connects to the php server on the backend. Apache And Socket
I've a strange problem with my flashchat realized on php and xmlsocket. I premise that chat works fine with 100 concurrent user. But When the number rises, and I've been to 350 users at the same time, something happens to the server which makes the whole thing freeze. After I eliminated just about everything that can go wrong with the php side of things, we came to the conclusion that this must be something related to the apache, since if before the php socket server went bad on account of an error, we simply needed to relaunch the php again, and everything would start up and work just fine untill the next crash. We have a unix server, using Apache 2, php 4.something or 5 (but again, problem is not there), did anyone knows what this could be? are we passing some limit of sockets connections Apache has that we don't know about? a limit of data transfer we are breaking? my script, when running and holding on to 300 users, use about 2-3 Mbit of bandwidth, nothing to get excited about.

What Is Best Socket Am2 940 Cpu
I am working on doing some various upgrades to my workstation computer. I got it back in Nov and have been adding to it every since. The motherboard was bad when I first got it so I had to buy a new one. I already had an athlon 5600 so I figured I would get the mobo for that. Upon advice from various people I got the abit kn9 sli, for socket am2 940 processors and nvidia nforce 570 sli mcp I am wanting to upgrade the processor now but I havent really found much info on what would be the highest level processor I could drop in. I know the phenoms dont work and some have told me that the athlon 6400 would be the biggest i could drop in but that isnt much more then I have now so would be no point. Two Sessions Active At The Same Time With Same Socket Application
i hosted one server socket application in my dedicated server which is recving the data from different units(vehicle tracking system) through port no 4444.in dedicated machine i am keeping one active session always...that means my socket application exe is opened always in an active session ie sectionA.This session is not logged off insted i used to close the rdp for keeping this session active.Based on settings if userA accessing SessionA then userB cannot able to reach the active sessionA at the same time instead new sessionB will open for userB. now my question is if userB also opened socket application in SessionB with same portno ,then which soket application will recive data from the units...whther the applictaion from sessionA or from SessionB?

15 days review .. litespeed enterprise web server We have installed litespeed on our 4 servers ... 2 are cpanel 1 is Direct admin 1 is Plesk .. All have websites running shopping carts, joomla cms, drupal cms, os commerce, etc.... None of our customers had any problem ... and all of them reported super fast loading .. static websites load in a zoom ... also cpanel loads 'like a bullet' with litespeed .. compared to apache on same server .. cpanel loads 2x times fast ... we had problem of ddos on one of the servers .. now with litespeed its all history .. also it seems now we can host double websites on same server with litespeed .. it reduces hardware costs ..no wonder wordpress.com uses litespeed .. we have also tried lighthttpd .. but its too complicated ... litespeed is like plug and play usb ... also there support is fast and have active forums ... and they regularly come out with updates and its easy to upgrade ...and instructions in there wiki is simple and clear ..

Enterprise Storage Hardware
I'm also curious as to some suggestions on forums really geared towards server hardware discussion. if you know any good ones, please let me know anyway, here's the situation: I currently lease my servers. I'm planning on switching to colocation. three primary functions need to be met: 1) web server 2) mysql server 3) mass storage I'm contemplating the best way to do this. price is a concern but I'm willing to pay more if it's warranted. would it be a bad idea to have the mass storage and the webserver on the same machine? ie, take the web server box and just throw in a SAS/SATA RAID card and put in the extra disks. it'd obviously save in overhead costs. if I do put them on one box, should the OS be booting from seperate physical disks from the rest of the storage? if I don't put them on one box, ie, the web server and the storage server are seperated, what would be the ideal way to connect them? just ethernet/LAN, through a fibre connection, etc? and that brings me to another question... why does SAS have external adapters if it's not supposed to be used to directly attach the array to more than one box? can it be used this way? is there a reason it shouldn't be?

Available RAM Windows Enterprise 2003
I am running a server with Windows Enterprise 2003 installed, it has 32GB RAM installed but in control panel I can only see 15.5GB RAM, I understand graphics cards etc will take some of the RAM so I suspect Windows is only seeing 16GB, instead of the installed 32GB, anyone any idea as to why I do not see all 32GB.

Opensource XEN Vs XenSource Enterprise
my clients with getting up some VPS's (around 16 - 24 to start) so he can consolidate some of his servers. Due to his need for windows as well, we'll be going with XEN. His big thing is to consolidate 4 of his webservers into VM's over seperate boxes (like 1GB ram each) and maybe even VM his SQL box so he can get an MSSQL in there for later on. My question is: How does the opensource XEN compare performance wise to XenSource ENT? At times he'll need to pull some good network transit (100Mbit+ over the LAN) and we want to make sure it isn't going to lag out or simply just not work. Does anyone got any benchmarks from using both?

GD-1.8 And Perl-GD-1.33 On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
we have a customer who has Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 on there server and they have asked us to install GD-1.8 and perl-GD-1.33-1.i386 every time we try and install GD-1.8 it says 'GD-2.2 is newer blah blah' and we can not continue. Dose any one know how this can be done and if so could they please give us some information of how to do it. we have been thinking about forcing 1.8 to install but we do not think this is a good solution as it will cause other problems.

My 1 Year Experience With JaguarPC (Enterprise Plan)
1. Transferring the sites to JaguarPC - Moving the sites to them was kinda rough, but with Veena's help everything was fixed in the end. I wouldn't say their tech support was not helpful, it's quite the opposite, but sometimes though not too often, I've got the impression I was communicating with some kind of auto reply machine. 2. Uptime - I've had 100% uptime (measured by the third party service) for the last four-five months. It was 99.2-99.5% some months last year, including scheduled maintenance downtime, server move, etc. 3. Transfer speed, site speed There had been problems in the past year with site speed and extremely low transfer rates in/out, but it was fixed. I can see all of my sites up and loading pretty quickly. 4. Server load When I had a big vbulletin board and gallery hosted on my VPS, I should admit I was experiencing server load problems now and then especially when 100+ people tried to use Flash Chat. I don't have this board anymore, and therefore no server load problems. 5. Tech Support - In general quite solid and reliable, but a bit uneven. While some of their tech staff is brilliant and replies within 30 min, and makes sure the problem is fixed, there were a few that probably didn't read the tickets properly and didn't understand the nature of the problem right away. But then again, their tech support managed to assist me every time I needed them last year. Don't know much about current situation now, I haven't tried to contact JaguarPC Tech Support for quite a while, which actually is a very good sign, right? 6. Price - Very reasonable, among the lowest in the market as far as I could see. And they also have Cpanel included in the price, lots of features, traffic, and pretty good storage space. 7. Conclusion - So far I see no reason at all to change my hosting provider. I think I will continue a bit longer, a year (or two?).

DirectAdmin / Plesk Hosting - Enterprise Grade Spam Filtering A Plus
We have a variety of clients that we just put on various providers/platforms that we use for various reason. I've given up on HSphere though. I can see the versatility in this but I just don't have the time to invest learning the interface. What is a +++ though is HSphere platforms bundle in urchin--so for certain sites, we can turn urchin up on the fly. Is there any hosts you guys recommend that have Enterprise grade email filtering. Part of the problem we have seen is just the level of spam filtering. Even with Pair, stuff was just coming through. For those with email in house -- great , as we just run the MX through Postini 1st and lock down SMTP on the FW side. For some of our clients *with some minor hiccups* at times, we moved them to Google Apps. The spam filtering is just a +++ as much as I would like to get away from Google on the email. And yes, I am aware they own Postini now... Back on to Webhosting. I think we have found a couple of new guys to try For nix based hosting, I'm planning to move some sites to Medialayer. Support or just various emails between them is very good ! For windows, we are debating. I have to reach out to Karl over at Steadfast and or Wiretree to inquire...but I'm leaning on a Plesk Windows Shared or VPS. Usability is key on the CP and Cpanel/Plesk is just so much easier than Hsphere. For the *email aspects* that's tied into any hosting provider, Mosso was interesting - BUT just looking at status.mosso.com was frighting.
