Rental Dedicated Server In Europe: It Is Important To The Quality Of Reliability!

Aug 24, 2008

Requires a dedicated server in Europe.

Requirements:

1) Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2,2 GHz;
2) RAM: 2024 MB DDRAM;
3) Hard Drive: 2x 250 GB SATA (can be smaller);
4) Traffic: At least 1000 GB or unrestricted;
5) Port: 100 Mbit / sec. (ideally 1000 Mbit / sec.);
6) IP-Addresses: 2.

Mandatory conditions:
1) A great date-center;
2) Operational and anglophone support;
3) Ability to establish a panel, for example: ISPmanager.

Recommended requirements:
1) Protection against DDoS-attacks;
2) The ability to administer the server, a company that provides services to lease (regular updates, round-the-clock monitoring, etc.).

The server is designed for the site, which will:

1) Forum;
2) Video and audio materials (up to 20 spots, for up to 10 minutes each), which can be viewed directly on the site using flash-player or download. Clips will not be frequently changed or supplemented;
3) Downloading developed software, up to 0.5 Mb;
4) Download documentation formats: DOC and PDF, up to 2 Mb;
All audio, video and documentation for its own production.

Additional information:

The number of visitors, initially to 10000 per month (probably much less or slightly more, not yet known) The audience will be visitors from the following countries: Ukraine, Russia, Poland, UK, Germany, France, USA and Canada.

Budget:
up to $ 200 a month. But if such amount is not sufficient for the entry requirements, are ready to revise the budget.

Need a really high-quality channel of communication and operational support, etc. Perhaps for these tasks, you recommend other requirements to a server and placing the territory? Check your real council.

Also look in the direction of affordable rental server and utilization of services: Akamai Technologies. If someone has experience working with Akamai, I ask, share their views. Should I use it for such a project?

A lot of information has been revised to servers in Germany, UK and USA. But the single answer, yet to be found.

Dedicated Server In Europe Area

Oct 22, 2009

I'm specifically looking for a server in the European area since I am from South Africa.

The reason being they will be more or less in the same timezone as I am and they also generally provide the fastest ping times (220ms to a server in Europe as opposed to 350ms to a server in USA).

I will be using the server as our own hosting space and hopefully be able to rent a monthly license for Parallels Plesk so that I may be able to resell hosting space - this is the primary reason for the dedicated server. I would like to know whether getting at least a quad core for this setup is essential or if I can get away with a dual core (in the case of hosting say 50 - 100 different websites).

So far I have been looking at keyweb.de which has a dual-core setup at 79euro installation fee and 49euro monthly fee. Their quad-core setup is 99euro installation and 59euro monthly. One drawback is it seems that they don't install Ubuntu linux (which is the OS i'm after). Another one is that their website isn't very intuitive - I cannot see whether it is possible to bundle Plesk with my order. I do however like the fact that they generally allow torrents.

Dedicated Server Company In Europe

Apr 30, 2008

actually I have my dedicated server with ThePlanet since many years ago, where I'm really happy, but due to recent spanish laws, I need to move everything to a european dedicated server as ThePlanet isn't certificated at the "Safe Harbor directive".

============
This is what I actually have:

2x1024 MB DDR 266 ECC
1 Dell 1600SC Dual Xeon MB DAT54AMB8C2
2 Intel P4 Xeon 2.8 GHz 533FSB (4x2.8)
2500Gb Bandwidth
Linux+Cpanel
============

What I'm looking for, is a serius company (no reseller company) with similar dedicated servers configurations. What I'm looking for is also a 1Gbps uplink connection. Bandwith is not so important, as my monthly bandwidth is only about 300Gb.

I've seen very fast (connection) servers in Netherland but don't know how serious they are.

OVH (apparently) looks also fine, but I've read very bad reviews about them.

DDoS Protected Dedicated Server IN EUROPE

Feb 22, 2008

After being hit by a DDoS (managed to evade it for a while, but it's still painful due to downtimes) I'm looking for a DDoS-protected server somewhere in Europe. I don't care about the exact location, it just has to be outside Canada and the USA. I do not require a lot of traffic - using just about 1.5GBs per day, diskspace also is not an issue, so the main things is the DDoS protection, connection availability and the general level of service.

Searching through this forum, I've found the only possible option for a DDoS-protected being DataPipe (contacted and awaiting for a quote already). Have I missed something else? Are there any alternative good hosters with reliable networks and protection in the EU?

Dedicated Server Required In Western Europe

Jun 3, 2008

Does anyone have any recommendations for a company that could provide a reasonably priced, reliable, unmanaged server for me somewhere in western europe?

I'll need a reasonable amount of bandwidth, so this is a consideration.

I'm based in the UK, but willing to look at other, more digitally enlightened countries nearby (Norway, Finland, France, Germany, etc) to get a better price since servers are very expensive here.

The server be hosting a big AJAX application so latency is a consideration also.

How Important Is It To Have RAID On A Dedicated Box

Apr 18, 2008

What really are the chances of a drive failure in any given year?

I worked in corporate IT departments for 15 years and had RAID on everything even though I rarely saw a drive failure. Out of hundreds of drives one might fail in any given year.

It does look like some folks here have experienced drive failures on dedicated boxes though, so my dilemma is this: If both cost the same am I better off to have a box with no RAID at a good host like theplanet, or have a box WITH raid with one of the value hosts?

TDS Deduction For Rental Services At India

Jul 5, 2008

My tax consultant tells me to deduct TDS for server rental services from SoftLayer.

SoftLayer in turn can claim the deducted amount back from US govt. This is the understanding between India and US govt, as my tax consultant says.

But I am unable to convince SoftLayer. Needing inputs from Indian firms who are having dedicated servers at US. Curious to know how to handle this TDS issue.

How Important Is Server Location

I am based in the UK and ideally I want my server based in the UK too. But the best host I've found so far seems to be American.

If most of my users are from the UK, then I don't want the latency to be too high. Or it so insignificant that I don't need to worry?

I was looking at [url] but if someone knows a similar deal in the UK I'd like to hear about it!

I checked my server memory by using TOP command and saw that it has less than 10MB of free RAM. My question: Where does it go? I got only 30 sites running and mostly are static site and No proxy.

what eats up memory? What ways can i use to free up my memory?

Location Of The Domain Name Server (DNS) Is Important ?

Jun 26, 2009

we have a server where we run sites and emails, but now we are going to buy a offsite email solution (based on ms exchange) in order to have our emails running when our web server is down.

But at the momment we run our own dns at our webserver using our own nameservers, in order that our emails keep working during a webserver downtime, we need to host our dns server at another location. So the offsite email company that is based in usa, said to us that they can host our dns at their datacenter in usa.

So i will have a configuration like this:

Webserver >> location: Spain
Mail Server >> location: USA
DNS Server >> location: USA

note: 99% of my website visitors came from Spain

So my question is:

Does it matters in terms of speed/performance having my dns server located in usa?

So in a simple way, will my website will it be fast with the dns located in spain, or having it in usa is exactly the same in terms of speed/performance?

What Server Specs Are Important In This Situation

Sep 18, 2007

I'm building a web app that will be both serving ads as well as recording things like impressions and clicks.

Obviously it will have a dedicated server (and will most likely quickly expand in to needing multiple servers) but I'm curious what specs are most important for this sort of thing.

Is processor speed more important? RAM? Hard drive speed?

It won't be heavy so much on the side of server full pages of data (like a normal website) as much as it will be heavy for display ads and recording visitor data.

I'll be running a LAMP setup for this and will also be serving actual ad files (images, flash) from a CDN.

More Important For Shoutcast Server? Bandwidth Or Port Speed?

Jun 28, 2008

I wonder whatLs more important on a shoutcast server, to get more bandwidth per month as possible, or a faster port connection?

I have test a 2 hours music stream at 128k bit rate and was only 5MB per listener !
This is not to host 24/7 radios. Its a project to host DJs /Live Bands at
a maximum of 128k, with no more than 2 hours events.

Also each event between 50-80 listeners, and not at same days or hours.

About the port connection, what this means? :
Port: 10/100MBPS SWITCHED VLAN

Is it shared and from 10 to 100mbps?

I am trying to find the best deal with dedi servers.
Have at this moment a unlimited bandwidth /100Mbps shared, but it seems the CPU is too low (AMD Sempron 3100), as I canLt seem to create more than 40 shoutcast accounts (and no client is streaming, just ON), and the server load goes up to 4.5 !!

So, I am looking on the market , as I saw better deals with better processors (Pentium4, Core 2 Duo), and much cheaper (below $100), but they only offer 2000/3000GB bandwidth.

Whats do you think?

I currently have Interworx as the default Control panel but are happy to change to Cpanel or otherwise. The iworx HA is not that good as if the cluster manager fails you loose everything.

I guess my only option is to do what most companies do and hope for the best - but have a good disaster recovery plan.

SCSI, SAS Vs SATA II Reliability

Apr 11, 2008

is it really worth the money nowadays to put in SCSI or SAS instead of SATAII (single disk, non-raid here), IF reliability is the only concern (i.e. NOT i/o performance) during the usual 3 year life time of a server?

Actually, I was pretty amazed by the sata reliability, in the past 3 years the only hdd failure was two sata on a mismatched mobo, which didn't support SATAII (a lot of read/write error, eventually died). Although we have 0% scsi and sas failure.

Crosslink Reliability / $100/mo DC ISPs?

Apr 3, 2007

to colocate a 1U in the DC metro area for $100/month for a small non-profit I work with. The service necessary is pretty basic -- 1Mbps or so would do (preferably unmetered so we're not on the hook for overage charges), 1 or 2 IPs would be fine, and the only real service necessary (besides steady power and connectivity, of course) would be the occasional remote reboot and 24/7 facility access.

I've come close to settling on Crosslink Internet (web site at www dot crosslink net, silly system won't let me post the URL directly because I'm new), because they're the only place I've found that can meet that price point. Before I commit, though, I wanted to hear from you guys:

* Are they a reliable ISP? They sound sort of low-budget over the phone, and while that's not necessarily a valid indicator of reliability, it makes me nervous.

* Are there any other decent ISPs in the Northern VA vicinity that could meet this price point that you guys would suggest over Crosslink?

VPS Reliability - What Is Normal Downtime

Jun 12, 2007

I currently have a Signature VPS with Servint and although I have found their customer service good and am getting concerned about my VPS's reliability. This is the only VPS I have experience with.

At the beginning of the year I was experiencing downtime at least once every couple of weeks and for at least 20 mins each time. Sometimes my VPS was down for over an hour. Most of the time the explanantion I received was a "Kernal Panic". Then for the last month and a half things have been good with no downtime, until today when my VPS went down again for about 50 mins.

So here I am asking what is normal downtime?

Is the downtime I am experiencing the norm and would I get the same reliability from any provider?

Would a dedicated server tend to be more reliable than a VPS?

I am considering moving to a dedicated server at LiquidWeb, not because I need the resources but I am wondering if reliability would improve. I am willing to pay for reliability! Any advice as to whether this would be a good move?
