How Do You Delete The Script / Important Database Data If You No Longer Rent A Server

Apr 24, 2009

I would like to know how to delete the script/important database data on a server in case of no longer rent it.

I will cancel a server in the coming month, but there are some critical password hardcode in my script. I am afraid it's not safe if only use a command liked "rm"

However, it's seem that it's not possible for me to format the HDD or run a fill zero software.

How Do I Delete All Data Off Linux Server

Dec 16, 2008

Just finished migrating server providers and our old servers are being canceled soon. Does anyone know how to delete all log data or any other cached files for security reasons? Is there a command in SSH that can wipe it clean? Without damaging anything of course.

Servers are:
Linux
WebHostManager

How Important Is The Data Center To Choosing A Host?

May 6, 2008

From testing, I've come to the conclusion that I get extremely fast page downloads from a host in the Equinix Center in VA. I'm in Western NY. I don't know if this data center is better than most or if I just happen to be in an ideal location for their service.

I have a business that gets orders from the whole U.S., but a majority are in the East, especially the NE. Visitors come from everywhere in the U.S., but I'd like to keep the buying customers happiest.

Page download speeds are very important to me and I'd like to keep them as fast as possible for my customers. How important is the data center used by a host going to be to my decision? Also, is there a way to find webhosts from a particular data center? Manually going to webhost sites to find out if they have servers in the Equinix center has been painfully slow.

Data Centre Location - Important For International Clients

Jun 16, 2008

Just wanted to get everyone's ideas on something. The web development company I work for is actively seeking business throughout the world. All of our applications are currently hosted on servers in the north west UK and London.

It may work out that we pickup some business in South America, South Africa and Asia.

A lot of people in our company are saying that it will need to be hosted near to our clients for speed issues as if we try and host the websites and backend applications from the UK they will be too slow. Surely the point of the internet is that it doesnt matter where the stuff is hosted. Colleagues are saying that if we are trying to administer servers on the other side of the world the poor connections will mean we will struglle.

In some of the countries the infrastructure must be pretty advanced. London has huge POP on the net and surely this will help.

Hosting stuff for clients based in South America isnt too bad as I think we would be ok hosting stuff in America. Likewise I'm sure there are similarly developed countries in Asia will be able to provide hosting. Not too sure about South Africa.

Secure Delete Data On HDD

Jun 14, 2007

we've just moved to a new server and was wondering if there was any programs to secure erase all data on the hard drive on the old server (with centOS), as we don't want anyone else who get this harddrive to be able to recover any data.

I'm not that familiar with the file systems used by linux, so perhaps this isn't a problem. Just had to ask.

We use some DoD "approved" applications to remove sensitive data on NTFS partitions on our stationary computers, but couldn't find anything for *nix.

Dedicated Server For Rent

May 25, 2008

I have a high end 8 core server with SAS drives and 10mbit burstable premium bandwidth that I am no longer using. However, I have locked myself in an agreement that I cannot get out of for another 13 months. As an individual, am I allowed to offer the server to others on these boards as a dedicated server?

Why Colocate When You Can Just Rent A Server

Jun 5, 2008

colocate because you have sites the size of myspace or because you offer dedicated server hosting yourselves? Because if I have the choice of renting a high end server at ThePlanet for $200 per month, or pay $300 a month for only bandwidth and just to have my server sit there in their facility, I rather rent. Plus I read a few posts in this forum where you guys say that you spend hours in the colocate. Does your server require that much maintenance or what are you doing?

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Delete Subdomain Without Removing Files Or Database?

Aug 30, 2014

I cannot seem to find a conclusive answer to this. I use subdomains to create client websites then once they are in their own domains the subdomains still remain. Can I delete only the subdomain and leave all the files or at least leave the database since it is still connected to the new domain. Example below.

subdomain.example.com uses database1

newsite.com still uses database1

Is there a way to copy the database into the new domain?

UK Dedicated Server Options - Rent Or Buy?

Jul 28, 2008

Have been snooping on these forums for a while and doing my research but now I need some advice. Hope you can help...

I currently have a dedicated server with 1&1 hosted in Germany and running 15-20 small company/friend websites. Whilst I have been reasonably happy with 1&1 (mainly down to their dashboard and reboot/restore/serial console functionality and prices), it's time for an upgrade. I am also looking to move back to the UK in order to get a UK based IP and slightly reduced latency, I understand I will have to pay a little more for the luxury!

I'm looking at a dedicated server with the following specs:

- Single Dual/Quad Core Processor
- Min 2GB RAM
- Min 2 x 160GB HDD + Hardware RAID 1
- 2TB data/month should be OK
- CentOS 5 (other *nix?)
- Plesk (cPanel?)
- 10GB NAS Backup
- Remote Reboot Port

Budget is around £100/month. At the moment it's between UK2, WebFusion, UK Servers, Poundhost, RapidSwitch and 34sp. I need to get quotes from DediPower, UK Fast & UK Dedicated...

The other main option is to buy a reasonably-specced Dell PowerEdge R200 (or equivalent?) and colo it. A machine with Quad Core Intel Xeon X3320, 2.5GHz, 2x3MB Cache, 1333MHz FSB, 2GB RAM, 2 x 250GB HDD, RAID 1 would cost about £700. Add colo from RapidSwitch and a Plesk license and the total is around the same as the best dedi offer.

Would welcome your thoughts on the benefits and pit-falls of renting vs. buying and recommendations for each based on my preferences. At the moment I'm swaying towards the buy and colo option as costs in year two will me much lower and I can resell/upgrade the hardware, but perhaps I'm missing something...

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Delete Domain Without Data?

Nov 10, 2014

I can not delete only a Domain and replace it with a other Domain. There is just the possibility to delete the Domain incl. the data. The Problem is i have 2 Domains that point to the same root-directory. And now i was making a new website in a other directory. And now i want to use one of this domain for my new website. But i can't change it. Also if i change the document root, the website d'ont use the new domainname - it makes like a redirection to the old domainname.

Script For Dedicated Hosts That Need To See Which Domains No Longer Point To Server

May 27, 2009

I'm trying to find a script of some kind that determines which domains (from a list on the box) no longer point to the server. I have to believe this exists somewhere, but with searching I'm coming up empty.

Plesk and cPanel are my targets. I could build it myself with some time, but honestly, I'm one of those guys that doesn't like to reinvent the wheel when it's already out there...even if as a paid script.

How Important Is Server Location

Mar 2, 2007

I am based in the UK and ideally I want my server based in the UK too. But the best host I've found so far seems to be American.

If most of my users are from the UK, then I don't want the latency to be too high. Or it so insignificant that I don't need to worry?

I was looking at [url] but if someone knows a similar deal in the UK I'd like to hear about it!

Why Server Memory Is Important

Oct 27, 2007

today i was asked if my server support ruby on the rail. The person said that the rail needs at least 256Mb of free RAM to run it. Is it true?

I checked my server memory by using TOP command and saw that it has less than 10MB of free RAM. My question: Where does it go? I got only 30 sites running and mostly are static site and No proxy.

what eats up memory? What ways can i use to free up my memory?

Location Of The Domain Name Server (DNS) Is Important ?

Jun 26, 2009

we have a server where we run sites and emails, but now we are going to buy a offsite email solution (based on ms exchange) in order to have our emails running when our web server is down.

But at the momment we run our own dns at our webserver using our own nameservers, in order that our emails keep working during a webserver downtime, we need to host our dns server at another location. So the offsite email company that is based in usa, said to us that they can host our dns at their datacenter in usa.

So i will have a configuration like this:

Webserver >> location: Spain
Mail Server >> location: USA
DNS Server >> location: USA

note: 99% of my website visitors came from Spain

So my question is:

Does it matters in terms of speed/performance having my dns server located in usa?

So in a simple way, will my website will it be fast with the dns located in spain, or having it in usa is exactly the same in terms of speed/performance?

What Server Specs Are Important In This Situation

Sep 18, 2007

I'm building a web app that will be both serving ads as well as recording things like impressions and clicks.

Obviously it will have a dedicated server (and will most likely quickly expand in to needing multiple servers) but I'm curious what specs are most important for this sort of thing.

Is processor speed more important? RAM? Hard drive speed?

It won't be heavy so much on the side of server full pages of data (like a normal website) as much as it will be heavy for display ads and recording visitor data.

I'll be running a LAMP setup for this and will also be serving actual ad files (images, flash) from a CDN.

More Important For Shoutcast Server? Bandwidth Or Port Speed?

Jun 28, 2008

I wonder whatLs more important on a shoutcast server, to get more bandwidth per month as possible, or a faster port connection?

I have test a 2 hours music stream at 128k bit rate and was only 5MB per listener !
This is not to host 24/7 radios. Its a project to host DJs /Live Bands at
a maximum of 128k, with no more than 2 hours events.

Also each event between 50-80 listeners, and not at same days or hours.

About the port connection, what this means? :
Port: 10/100MBPS SWITCHED VLAN

Is it shared and from 10 to 100mbps?

I am trying to find the best deal with dedi servers.
Have at this moment a unlimited bandwidth /100Mbps shared, but it seems the CPU is too low (AMD Sempron 3100), as I canLt seem to create more than 40 shoutcast accounts (and no client is streaming, just ON), and the server load goes up to 4.5 !!

So, I am looking on the market , as I saw better deals with better processors (Pentium4, Core 2 Duo), and much cheaper (below $100), but they only offer 2000/3000GB bandwidth.

Whats do you think?

Rental Dedicated Server In Europe: It Is Important To The Quality Of Reliability!

Aug 24, 2008

Requires a dedicated server in Europe.

Requirements:

1) Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2,2 GHz;
2) RAM: 2024 MB DDRAM;
3) Hard Drive: 2x 250 GB SATA (can be smaller);
4) Traffic: At least 1000 GB or unrestricted;
5) Port: 100 Mbit / sec. (ideally 1000 Mbit / sec.);
6) IP-Addresses: 2.

Mandatory conditions:
1) A great date-center;
2) Operational and anglophone support;
3) Ability to establish a panel, for example: ISPmanager.

Recommended requirements:
1) Protection against DDoS-attacks;
2) The ability to administer the server, a company that provides services to lease (regular updates, round-the-clock monitoring, etc.).

The server is designed for the site, which will:

1) Forum;
2) Video and audio materials (up to 20 spots, for up to 10 minutes each), which can be viewed directly on the site using flash-player or download. Clips will not be frequently changed or supplemented;
3) Downloading developed software, up to 0.5 Mb;
4) Download documentation formats: DOC and PDF, up to 2 Mb;
All audio, video and documentation for its own production.

Additional information:

The number of visitors, initially to 10000 per month (probably much less or slightly more, not yet known) The audience will be visitors from the following countries: Ukraine, Russia, Poland, UK, Germany, France, USA and Canada.

Budget:
up to $ 200 a month. But if such amount is not sufficient for the entry requirements, are ready to revise the budget.

Need a really high-quality channel of communication and operational support, etc. Perhaps for these tasks, you recommend other requirements to a server and placing the territory? Check your real council.

Also look in the direction of affordable rental server and utilization of services: Akamai Technologies. If someone has experience working with Akamai, I ask, share their views. Should I use it for such a project?

A lot of information has been revised to servers in Germany, UK and USA. But the single answer, yet to be found.

Rent To Own

Mar 3, 2008

Anyone knows of any providers in the US (or UK) who has rent to own offers? Please highlight the ones you know are good, won't rip you off in the end and so on.

Prefer the US as I am sick of paying in EUR and GBP, just too much hassles in accounting

Planning on expanding my current offerings.
