Why Server Memory Is Important

Oct 27, 2007

today i was asked if my server support ruby on the rail. The person said that the rail needs at least 256Mb of free RAM to run it. Is it true?

I checked my server memory by using TOP command and saw that it has less than 10MB of free RAM. My question: Where does it go? I got only 30 sites running and mostly are static site and No proxy.

what eats up memory? What ways can i use to free up my memory?

How Important Is Server Location

Mar 2, 2007

I am based in the UK and ideally I want my server based in the UK too. But the best host I've found so far seems to be American.

If most of my users are from the UK, then I don't want the latency to be too high. Or it so insignificant that I don't need to worry?

I was looking at [url] but if someone knows a similar deal in the UK I'd like to hear about it!

Location Of The Domain Name Server (DNS) Is Important ?

Jun 26, 2009

we have a server where we run sites and emails, but now we are going to buy a offsite email solution (based on ms exchange) in order to have our emails running when our web server is down.

But at the momment we run our own dns at our webserver using our own nameservers, in order that our emails keep working during a webserver downtime, we need to host our dns server at another location. So the offsite email company that is based in usa, said to us that they can host our dns at their datacenter in usa.

So i will have a configuration like this:

Webserver >> location: Spain
Mail Server >> location: USA
DNS Server >> location: USA

note: 99% of my website visitors came from Spain

So my question is:

Does it matters in terms of speed/performance having my dns server located in usa?

So in a simple way, will my website will it be fast with the dns located in spain, or having it in usa is exactly the same in terms of speed/performance?

What Server Specs Are Important In This Situation

Sep 18, 2007

I'm building a web app that will be both serving ads as well as recording things like impressions and clicks.

Obviously it will have a dedicated server (and will most likely quickly expand in to needing multiple servers) but I'm curious what specs are most important for this sort of thing.

Is processor speed more important? RAM? Hard drive speed?

It won't be heavy so much on the side of server full pages of data (like a normal website) as much as it will be heavy for display ads and recording visitor data.

I'll be running a LAMP setup for this and will also be serving actual ad files (images, flash) from a CDN.

More Important For Shoutcast Server? Bandwidth Or Port Speed?

Jun 28, 2008

I wonder whatLs more important on a shoutcast server, to get more bandwidth per month as possible, or a faster port connection?

I have test a 2 hours music stream at 128k bit rate and was only 5MB per listener !
This is not to host 24/7 radios. Its a project to host DJs /Live Bands at
a maximum of 128k, with no more than 2 hours events.

Also each event between 50-80 listeners, and not at same days or hours.

About the port connection, what this means? :
Port: 10/100MBPS SWITCHED VLAN

Is it shared and from 10 to 100mbps?

I am trying to find the best deal with dedi servers.
Have at this moment a unlimited bandwidth /100Mbps shared, but it seems the CPU is too low (AMD Sempron 3100), as I canLt seem to create more than 40 shoutcast accounts (and no client is streaming, just ON), and the server load goes up to 4.5 !!

So, I am looking on the market , as I saw better deals with better processors (Pentium4, Core 2 Duo), and much cheaper (below $100), but they only offer 2000/3000GB bandwidth.

Whats do you think?

Rental Dedicated Server In Europe: It Is Important To The Quality Of Reliability!

Aug 24, 2008

Requires a dedicated server in Europe.

Requirements:

1) Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2,2 GHz;
2) RAM: 2024 MB DDRAM;
3) Hard Drive: 2x 250 GB SATA (can be smaller);
4) Traffic: At least 1000 GB or unrestricted;
5) Port: 100 Mbit / sec. (ideally 1000 Mbit / sec.);
6) IP-Addresses: 2.

Mandatory conditions:
1) A great date-center;
2) Operational and anglophone support;
3) Ability to establish a panel, for example: ISPmanager.

Recommended requirements:
1) Protection against DDoS-attacks;
2) The ability to administer the server, a company that provides services to lease (regular updates, round-the-clock monitoring, etc.).

The server is designed for the site, which will:

1) Forum;
2) Video and audio materials (up to 20 spots, for up to 10 minutes each), which can be viewed directly on the site using flash-player or download. Clips will not be frequently changed or supplemented;
3) Downloading developed software, up to 0.5 Mb;
4) Download documentation formats: DOC and PDF, up to 2 Mb;
All audio, video and documentation for its own production.

Additional information:

The number of visitors, initially to 10000 per month (probably much less or slightly more, not yet known) The audience will be visitors from the following countries: Ukraine, Russia, Poland, UK, Germany, France, USA and Canada.

Budget:
up to $ 200 a month. But if such amount is not sufficient for the entry requirements, are ready to revise the budget.

Need a really high-quality channel of communication and operational support, etc. Perhaps for these tasks, you recommend other requirements to a server and placing the territory? Check your real council.

Also look in the direction of affordable rental server and utilization of services: Akamai Technologies. If someone has experience working with Akamai, I ask, share their views. Should I use it for such a project?

A lot of information has been revised to servers in Germany, UK and USA. But the single answer, yet to be found.

How Do You Delete The Script / Important Database Data If You No Longer Rent A Server

Apr 24, 2009

I would like to know how to delete the script/important database data on a server in case of no longer rent it.

I will cancel a server in the coming month, but there are some critical password hardcode in my script. I am afraid it's not safe if only use a command liked "rm"

However, it's seem that it's not possible for me to format the HDD or run a fill zero software.

Cpanel VPS - Plenty Of Free Memory, But 'committed' Memory Exceeds VPS RAM

Jun 12, 2009

I have a VPS. And have had an issue both when it was 1Gig and now I recently downgraded it to 768m, because I am moving some sites to a dedicated.

However, the part I am having trouble grasping is that when I look at graphs from Munin, it will typically always show 200-400MB free memory (and free -m and top agrees with munin), but Munin shows 'committed' memory that is above the total Ram on the VPS and once the 'committed' ram exceeds the VPS limit, processes start failing.

So, why is 'committed' memory exceeding the RAM on my VPS, when Munin, free -m and top all show there is free memory available?

Code:
root@server [~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 768 449 318 0 0 0
-/+ buffers/cache: 449 318
Swap: 0 0 0
Here's a graph that munin produces that shows the 'committed' memory exceeding the total memory.

Server Memory

Sep 27, 2009

We have an IBM X336 with dual Xeon 3.4s. This machine natively takes PC2-3200-ECC-Unbuffered - 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM.

Has anyone had any experience with ECC ran on if it will clock down?

For instance can I install PC2-5300 same memory type (240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM) will it work? (I would test it but I dont have any ).

I know it works in desktops but never have had a reason to do it in servers.

[For whatever reason the PC2-3200 is more expensive than the PC2-5300.]

How Important Is Location

Oct 11, 2009

I live in Turkey. I'm gonna buy a reseller package from Hostgator which is located in Texas. I will mostly make websites in English language for business(affiliate websites) but I decided to make 2 websites in Turkish language for a hobby of mine. Should I buy hosting from a company in Europe or can I still go with Hostgator? I really like Hostgator's package but how much disadvantage would there be in terms of speed? Would people be able to tell by speed whether the server is close or not? Is there a way to test it? All my friends' computers have a speed around 100kb download per second.

PCI Compliance How Important Is It To You

Dec 11, 2008

How important is PCI Compliance to you as a hosting provider? Are you compliant now?

Do you intend to be complaint? Also how many thing that just getting a scan from comodo or another scanner makes you compliant?

As far the rules for PCI-DSS state if you store CC's which all hosting companies do if they are using a billing system, i.e MB, WHMCS etc.. You have to be compliant to a fault for a 37 page document with lots and lots of requirements that most don't do and don't know how to do.

Is it worth it to not make the effort and get compliant or risk losing your merchant account and getting on the TMF list and fined $50k?

Server Unresponsive ( Out Of Memory )

Apr 8, 2009

I've run into an issue lately with a few servers that I support and I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions on how to approach the issue?

Scenario:

The server will stop responding to new network connections, I can ping it, but nothing more. When the DC looks at the server, they find the error " Out of Memory " on the console.

What is a good approach to troubleshooting these?

Here is what I do, if I'm off base, I'm here to learn and will read

find / -name "core.*" -ls | egrep core.[0-9]

**try and find software failure

df -h

**validate disk usage

** check /var/log/messages /var/log/dmesg

If I can't find anything obvious in those places, I start digging through the access_logs and error_log to try and find a giant influx of requests that could have hit the server too quickly to process thus filling the memory up.

In this case, I adjust the rlimits.

*shrug* This is not fixing the issue on a few servers and I'm curious how other people approach this problem? Could this be hardware?

My Server Memory Usage Is 100%

Jun 10, 2009

Since a short while back my server memory usage is 100%. The amount of
visitors decreased so the memory should be lower in consumption than before.

I suspect a newly installed script could have bugs or misuse of the
server by hackers. I don't know how to see on the server what script or
what part makes the memory use so high. I see Apache is very high but
I'm on VPS.

Server Memory Leaks

Feb 1, 2008

i'm running Suse 10 linux server in my company, and that server is used primary for graphing solutions, and data gathering.

server is fujitsu-siemens primergy rx100 s2 - suse was the only OS that detected disc controllers at that time.

It runs tons of queries to bunch of devices via SNMP and stores data in RRD files and some other data to mysql. It also runs a web server for displaying that data.

queries are short PHP script, that runs in CLI mode by cron

Few months ago my company switched to MPLS routing of our local network, and IMHO that was done very bat so sometimes i get timeouts, or networks run very slow.

other thing is that i server is behaving really weird.

Issue 1 - memory leaks or something like that
After restart it works quite fine for about 10-15 days, but after that when i run top i see that apache is using more and more VIRT memory, it starts with 8 megs per process and ends up with 150-200 megs per process.
things i tried to fix:
recompiled from scratch (php,mysql,httpd,snmp,maybee even libc but i'm not shure about that) all latest stable version, no improvements - when it runs it runs like hell, but after few days it starts to eat memory again.

Issue 2 - strange CPU load
after few days of flawless work, when it starts to eat memory it starts increase load, BUT in period of 08-20h load increases up to 100 and then suddenly drops to 1-2... and then in next morning it starts to rise again

only thing that comes to my mind is that ether:

- some computer is infected wit some virus, so in work hours it kills my machine - but ther is nothing weird in netstat

- doe tho lousy MPLS routing server is getting bunch of timeouts in work hours when we have large amounts of traffic, so the poll queue get larger and larger (cron runs every five minutes)

-everything is messed up - i need to reinstall everything (I'll rather shoot my self in the foot )

so what i'm asking here is HOW to gather data on what exactly is happening on that server, I'm quite experienced in writing shell scripts so it would not be a problem for me to write some custom scripts to analyze traffic, ports, (using iptraf) i just need someone to tell me WHAT and WHERE to look.

P.S. 1
Almost Everything on server is compiled by me, in order to get maximum from hardware. No RPM's

P.S. 2 PHP and Mysql are already well tuned and optimized - query cache works, APC is installed, for first 10 or so days it can handle A LOT of load without a problem.

Memory In HP Proliant DL 360 Server

May 29, 2007

We have a HP Proliant DL 360 Server, it was running with 2gb RAM, this consisted of 4 x 512mb sticks. We upgraded by adding another 4gb, this was 2 x 2gb sticks, so we removed 2 of the 512mb sticks and replaced with 2 x 2gb stickes, effectively giving us 5gb of RAM. When I rebooted the machine at the server centre it immediately displayed 5 gb of RAM as it run thru boot up, it then displayed a screen saying it had found the RAM (it looked like a BIOS type, although I'm no expert) I think if my memory serves me right it then confirmed the memory was OK and continued booting into Windows 2003. However when we viewed the maching remotely it is only showing 4gb of RAM. Does anyone have any idea why this might be? where would are missing RAM be? I guess its the 2 x 512 not displaying. Its awkward to access the server easily, it means making an appointment etc, I wondered if there is anything we can do remotely to configure the RAM.

Server Memory Testing

I have a feeling this is a memory error and am looking for a way to confirm this.

I found a package called memtest86+ (via yum) but have never used it. Have any of you used this program in the past and if so what are the steps? Does the server have to be shut down? Are there other programs out there to accomplish what I am trying to do?

New Dedi Server - Memory Not Going Below 87%?

Oct 7, 2007

I've recently purchased a new dedicated box and am noticing via phpsyinfo that memory is pretty much always around 87% (It was at 97% used today for a good hour and quite often its at 90+%)

This system has a 1GB of ram, and runs DirectAdmin. There are only 4 sites on the server and none of them are busy sites currently.

I've read around and studied a few of the threads here on WHT regarding high memory usage but I am at abit of a loss on the cause here and what I can do.

I found a few commands to run to help try and establish the cause - After running ps aux I noticed:

I don't really understand the results above, I can obviously see the ps aux shows some high percentage of memory used by some processes -

How Important Is Host Location

May 5, 2009

I am in the process of finding a host for my website (as I am not very happy with the current one).

My statistics shows that most of my visitors are from Europe and Asia and not much from US.

My question is, should I think of a host in Europe or Asia?

does it actually make a lot of difference where is your host located ?

How Important Is Live Chat?

Feb 15, 2009

How important is this from a customer standpoint? Assuming ticket response times are under 1 hour, is Live support something that customers really want? I'm considering adding it as a support option, but want to weigh whether or not its worth it.

Is 24x7 Support Important To You

Apr 9, 2009

I don't know how some web hosting companies get away with saying they offer 24x7 support but don't. I have come across many companies that all clam the same thing but at the end when it comes down to it they are not there when you need them.

My question is if they have a live chat button on there site and I see there sales team offline, that is an immediate sign they are really not there 24x7. If a person is qualified to manage a server is he/she not qualified to sell a product?

how can a network be monitored if you don't have a staff 24x7?

How Important Is Hosting Location

Oct 4, 2009

I work for a company that does business mainly in California but we have people all over the country including Boston and NYC. I'm looking for dedicated servers and found good pricing/service in Chicago but worried about response times for my Cali folks. I'm hosting a non public web app that everyone needs to use so the load is low and response times are not super critical.

Will my users experience noticable latency?

Also people that manage the servers may be in Cali as well. Will they find it fustrating to remote into these windows servers and manage them or will it be acceptable or should I find something closer to california?

How Important Is It To Have RAID On A Dedicated Box

Apr 18, 2008

What really are the chances of a drive failure in any given year?

I worked in corporate IT departments for 15 years and had RAID on everything even though I rarely saw a drive failure. Out of hundreds of drives one might fail in any given year.

It does look like some folks here have experienced drive failures on dedicated boxes though, so my dilemma is this: If both cost the same am I better off to have a box with no RAID at a good host like theplanet, or have a box WITH raid with one of the value hosts?

IMPORTANT: Do Not Ignore This Email

Jul 25, 2008

I'm receiving this email from the server :

"IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email.
The hostname (one.icv.ro) resolves to 76.163.193.147. It should resolve to 209.188.81.112. Please be sure to correct /etc/hosts as well as the 'A' entry in zone file for the domain.

Some are all of these problems can be caused by
/etc/resolv.conf being setup incorrectly. Please check this file if you
believe everything else is correct.

You may be able to
automaticly correct this problem by using the ' Add an A entry for your
hostname ' under ' Dns Functions ' in your Web Host Manager"

So everything is working fine ..
I checked the DNS zone and every thing is ok.

but run this on the server :
====================
dig +noall +answer +additional icv.ro NS
icv.ro. 84220 IN NS ns9.ixwebhosting.com.
icv.ro. 84220 IN NS ns10.ixwebhosting.com.
====================
dig +noall +answer +additional icv.ro
icv.ro. 82792 IN A 76.163.193.147

and they are wrong.

strange that the ping is fine.. and is corect ip:

ping icv.ro
PING icv.ro (209.188.81.112) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from one.icv.ro (209.188.81.112): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.060 ms
======================

So my server didn't updated the ns. They are the old ns .. and the new one are

Name Server: ns1.wiredtree.com
Name Server: ns2.wiredtree.com
