OpenBSD Pf: Long-term Connection

Jan 7, 2008

I recently deployed an OpenBSD machine using pf to be a router/firewall for my home LAN, using NAT and sitting between our cable modem and our switch. It seems to work great.

But I just noticed an 'active' connection to a website... It's been open for 19 hours. 12KB of traffic has flowed over the connection, and the machine on the local end that initiated the connection is a laptop that's been offline for hours.

My question is twofold:

- Why hasn't this been dropped, after hours of inactivity?

- Short of restarting everything, is there a way to instruct PF to drop the connection / lose state information on it?

MySQL Long Procees Time

Futurehosting: A Long-time Client Update

Aug 2, 2007

Recently however it seems they're getting some bad press, most people are blaming growing pains.

As someone who's seen the before and after picture, i thought i'd chime in and actually put some positive notes on these boards, as I know these guys deserve more credit than this! It's one of those situations where if something goes wrong, people complain, if everything is right, not enough people speak up!

Server speed / specs:
one word: fantastic. i now have 2 VPSs with them - one in their new data center. I had moved the 2nd VPS from another host (also very well known on these boards, who I won't mention) where I had been having loads of issues regarding load and IO wait times. Load would spike up to 20+, server would crash, reboot, and this would happen 20+ times a day. Nothing critical on that server. Post-migration, using very very similar specs on futurehosting, and the load has been <0.10 since I started her up 3 days ago.

My current server sees load going up once in a while - during a large scale DOS attack last month the load only went up to 4, with over 1000 TCP connections. I only realized there was an issue as I checked one of my status scripts and noticed the enormous tcp count. I've recently moved to a new VPS on a new node, and load has been incredible, along with responsiveness.

No complaints at all on that front.

Network performance
Their old data center, softlayer, has much to be desired. There has been at least one outage every month so far which lasts in the hours duration. However, FH has made the very wise option of expanding out to a new datacenter and will hopefully slowly phase out softlayer, which has become quite pathetic. Connectivity wise though (speed/bandwidth) - no complaints.

Support
I remember getting a response within minutes months ago. However, that being said, months ago the customer service could only deal with the most basic of problems, and would escalate the issue if it was complicated, which would take time for a response.

FH did go through a growing pains phase a little while ago with regards to customer service - you wouldn't get a response too quick.

However now it seems they have begun improving. They are expanding their support base, and if you deal with the support guys you'll definitely be impressed by how dedicated and "hardcore" they are. Very recently I had a major issue with my server - it got compromised via root and someone wreaked havoc. Some script was installed that basically self-DOS'ed the server and basically killed it.

FH support instantly shut down the server and put me back up on my old server which I had migrated from only a week ago. They thoroughly went through and wiped clean my current server, fully bullet-proofed it and cleaned up the security of it all (something that was not a problem when they set it up - but rather my fault over time as I had disabled some very silly things I shouldn't have...) The guy working on the server, Jim, worked his *** off, pulled an all nighter (he was still responding to my tickets at 9am GMT, which was 4am his time - and I know he's not a night shift guy!). By the end of it all, he put me back onto my current newly-secured server, and was still revving to go, asking me what I wanted and to give him another challenge!

So, to sum this section--
good attitude: check
know-how: check
laziness: none.

I guarantee one thing - the vps company I just moved my 2nd vps from in this situation would not have spent an entire night rebuilding my server the way it was, but would've simply put me back on my old one week image, said "oh well, sorry, bad luck" and moved on.

All in all, my experience with these guys over the past couple of weeks (since the new data center opened) has been nothing short of positive, and I know they're rising out of the slight slump they had gotten themselves into.

I'll submit my URL to the mod to verify this post. And no, I don't work with FH

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Slow SMTP Response From Qmail

Jun 16, 2015

We are seeing intermittent slow responses from SMTP on a RHEL6 server running Qmail on Plesk 11.5. The response is being measured from a remote Zabbix server.

The response time seems to be slow (>10s) for a period of 2-3 minutes and then returns to normal (<1s). All other services continue to be ok during the period of slowness.

The server_args line in /etc/xinetd.d/smtp_psa already contains "-Rt0" and all the DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf are resolving properly.

From looking at the maillog file the server was receiving about 35 SMTP connections a minute at the time of the slowdown. We have the server configured to use 2 x RBL's.

I wonder if we are hitting a limit on the maximum amount of SMTP connections. The file /var/qmail/control/concurrencyincoming does not exist so, according to the Qmail manual, there shouldn't be a limit on the number of incoming SMTP connections.

The issue is that Health Monitor still reported that there was low diskspace displayed by color yellow. And it look Health Monitor over 16 minutes to change the alarm level from Yellow to Green

However the statistics at the specific subscription still present the Backup usage of 51 GB's whilest they are no longer there.

What can i do about this in order to speed up the synchronization?

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: SMTP Service (qmail) Stops Responding On Port 25

May 19, 2015

Since 15.05.2015 smtp experiencing problems.

Smtp service (qmail) stops responding on port 25:
# time telnet localhost 25
Trying 127.0.0.1...
quit
quit
Connected to localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1).
Escape character is '^]'.
quit
quit
Connection closed by foreign host.

real 4m10.629s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.002s

After server restart or sometimes apache stop or ixnetd restart its responding for a some random time, and then again it stops to respond. Plesk panel show it as stopped but qmail itself running in memory, and does other its work, it just stops responding at port 25, or responds with a huge delay.

I've tried change it to postfix, reconfigured with mchk, repaired with repair.sh -r, disabled and uninstalled parallels antivirus, antispam, dnsbl, disabled firewall, disabled smtp lock. Checked apache, dns. Enabled submission port which works when 25 port doesnt, but i need working 25 port.

Nothing solves problem, its just stops responding after some random time. There is no errors on maillog.

I think this problem occured after recent plesk microupdate, because i didn't do anything to server configuration in last months.

This article says it might be dnsbl [URL] .... but it disabled(from plesk panel) on my server, maybe there is way to focefully kill any relation to dnsbl?

Plesk info:
OS Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5.9 (Tikanga)

update: xinetd restart is definitely brings smtp alive, but it goes off after random period of time (5min ~ couple hours)

SMTP Connection Has Stopped Working

Jul 9, 2008

I have been having great trouble sending mails from my local Thunderbird/Windows client to my Debian/Exim-server via TLS/SMTP.

I am no expert on TLS and SMTP, but I managed to create a server certificate and set up a secure (TLS) connection more than a year ago, and it has been working fine until it suddenly stopped working a couple of weeks ago.

Sending to external addresses from web pages still works fine, the problem seems to be in the SMTP connection. If I try to "telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 25" I get no reply whatsoever (it seems to connect but it just gives me a blank screen with a blinking cursor) and I am wondering if there is a firewall issue or if I am simply not running the right daemon to listening for incoming SMTP connections...

POP continues to work fine with teapop/stunnel enabled.

I am running Exim 4.63-17 on Debian Etch. I configured Exim to be of the type "internet site; mail is sent and received directly using SMTP"

==============================
Firewall shouldn't be a problem (?):

debian:~# iptables -L
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
==============================

I really don't know what to do. I have tried running:
tail -f /var/log/daemon.log

Which responds when I access my mail using POP but not when I try to send using SMTP.

Sending Email Cpanel :: SMTP Command Timeout On Connection

Jun 3, 2008

i have this weird problem of emails not gettign delivered and i am hosting with theplanet. Every email is sitting on the queue and not delivered.

i checked with dnsreport and it says

Timed out [Last data sent: [Did not connect]]

and my exim_mainlog shows

R=dk_lookuphost defer (-1): host lookup did not complete
2008-06-03 04:49:59 SMTP command timeout on connection

i have restarted exim, checked firewall and still i am unable to fix my problem!

update:

i again checked with dnsreport and my nameservers are failing

NS FAIL NS A timeout occurred getting the NS records from your nameservers! None of your nameservers responded fast enough. They are probably down or unreachable. I can't continue since your nameservers aren't responding. If you have a Watchguard Firebox,

it's due to a bug in their DNS Proxy, which must be disabled (31 Jul 2006 UPDATE: several years after being informed of this, there is a rumor that there is a fix that allows the Watchguard DNS proxy to work).

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Postfix Relay - Connection Time Out On Forwarded Mail

Dec 1, 2014

My hosting provider recently (and without any warning) decided to block outgoing connections to port 25. What this means is for any client/domain/email address that has a forwarder setup, the mail will never reach its destination because the connection to the other server always times out. The error logs look like this:

postfix/smtp[8414]: connect to ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM[74.125.131.26]:25: Connection timed out
postfix/smtp[8421]: connect to aspmx2.googlemail.com[74.125.131.26]:25: Connection timed out
postfix/smtp[8425]: connect to aspmx3.googlemail.com[64.233.186.26]:25: Connection timed out
postfix/smtp[8423]: connect to aspmx4.googlemail.com[64.233.166.26]:25: Connection timed out

I haven't been able to find a way to force relay to 465. Or maybe I shouldn't have relay on at all and do this another way?
