Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Caching Bind Nameserver Setup

Aug 20, 2014

I would like to setup a caching Bind nameserver for which I need to modify the file /etc/named.conf. The file is automatically created by Plesk however and I am unable to find information on how to modify the file in Plesk.

Code:
#ATTENTION!
#
#DO NOT MODIFY THIS FILE BECAUSE IT WAS GENERATED AUTOMATICALLY,
#SO ALL YOUR CHANGES WILL BE LOST THE NEXT TIME THE FILE IS GENERATED.
// $Id: named.conf,v 1.1.1.1 2001/10/15 07:44:36 kap Exp $

Any way to modify named.conf?

Plesk Automation :: Master Nameserver Name BIND

Jul 9, 2013

In 'Operations > DNS manager > Nameservers' the nameserver lists the hostname of the node as the nameserver. How do you specify or alter the nameserver to something different which would be more standard for example ns.domain.name?

Can BIND Query Another Nameserver

Jul 2, 2008

I've got mydomain.com using my own BIND nameserver hosted on a dedicated server.

I need subdomain.mydomain.com to have a dynamic IP. I know many dynamic DNS providers, but they all require you to change the nameservers of your domain to their own nameservers. Unfortunately I cannot do this - I need mydomain.com to keep using my nameservers.

I therefore need a way to get my nameserver to query a dynamic DNS providers' nameserver for subdomain.mydomain.com. Esentially my nameserver would just copy the IP that the other nameserver returns. Can BIND do this, or if not, any other name-server software?

Nameserver Setup

Aug 21, 2007

I recently moved hosts and also decided to use what I hope is a more reliable DNS / nameserver setup. So I signed up at everydns.net. I surfed and read for hours and got more confused the more I read.

I finally set up my accounts with the corresponding records as follows:

*.mysite.com CNAME mysite.com
mysite.com A 123.123.123.123
mysite.com MX (10) 1mail.mysite.com
www.mysite.com A 123.123.123.123

My questions are:

1 - Is this pretty much right?
2 - should I have a second MX recored like:
mysite.com MX (10) 2mail.mysite.com

I'm using 4 nameservers >> ns1.everydns.net, ns2.everydns.net, ns3.everydns.net, ns4.everydns.net,

Nameserver Setup

Aug 11, 2007

I just purchased my first dedicated server. It comes with WHM 11.2.0 / CentOS Enterprise 5 i686.

Could someone please refer me to a guide to setup the nameservers? I've tried to follow some guides i found on google but still I can't get websites to resolve.

How do I know my nameservers are working? When I ping them they display the proper IP's and when I enter them in a browser it goes to the cpanel default site that it should but when I park domains to them, they don't work.

Could someone please maybe give me a guide for WHM 11.2.0? Also, some of the guides said to modify /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/nameserverips. I did modfiy /etc/resolv.conf to my information.

If it would make it easier, pretend i'm trying to add ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com as nameservers with the hostname server.domain.com and domain name domain.com. I want ns1.domain.com on ip 74.47.74.47 and ns2.domain.com on ip 74.47.74.48. What would /etc/resolv.conf look like after and what would /etc/nameserverips look like after? And what are the steps to take in WHM to set it up?

Is it ns1.localdomain.com or ns1.leaseweb.nl?

I suppose I can't set nameservers for my own domain since I've only got one Ip and I would need 2?

Cpanel Nameserver Setup

Feb 21, 2007

Sorry if this sounds confusing its my first time. So i have an account at ev1servers.net/theplanet.com when i signed up i was asked for a domain i could use for the servers main domain which we'll call maindomain.com, my question is when you setup private nameservers do they have to be setup for the main domain e.g. ns1.maindomain.com, ns2.maindomain.com? What i did was setup the name servers for a domain account on my server and i couldn't get it to work which leads me to believe it has to be the main domain.

Nameserver,hostname, DNS Setup...

Nov 3, 2007

I currently have a domain registered at godaddy.com

the domain is NDSuniverse.com

I've ordered a VPS at skodagroup.com, they given me WHT VPS Pro, Cpanel, LXadmin contrtol panel.

quote from e-mail
Custom DNS Server Addresses
=============================
The custom DNS addresses you should set for your domain to use are:
Primary DNS: ns1
Secondary DNS: ns2

You will have to login to your registrar and find the area where you can specify both of your custom name server addresses.

After adding these custom nameservers to your domain registrar control panel, it will take 24 to 48 hours for your domain to delegate authority to your DNS server. Once this has taken effect, your DNS server has control over the DNS records for the domains which use your custom name server addresses.

they didn't give me any nameserver DNS....

How can i get my domain hosted onto my VPS asap? Step by step instructions really needed. thank you.

Also, i have 2 free IPS.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Bind SSL To IP In Postfix

Dec 6, 2014

I would like each of my clients who have a dedicated IP address and an SSL certificate to be able to use their own domain name (and own certificate) when sending mail on ports 465 or 587. I have managed to change the default certificate used by Postfix to my own server's certificate, but I want users to use their OWN IP address and SSL certificate when sending, so this is not an option.

I have been able to update Dovecot to use a specific certificate for each IP address, but I can't seem to update Postfix. I was trying to follow these instructions but my postfix master.cf was quite different than the poster's file and I didn't succeed: [URL] ....

I know many people will simply say "it can't be done" or "just get the users to use the shared IP address", but I know there must be some workaround to make this work, even if it means manually updating the config file after every Plesk update. I'm even prepared (if possible) to have Plesk abandon management of Postfix and have me manage it manually, if that's even an option.

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Upgrade BIND Must Be Restarted At Reboot To Work

May 20, 2014

Recently upgraded to Plesk 11.5 & upgraded to the latest CentOS kernel. Whenever I reboot the server DNS services do not work, can't view any websites hosted on the server etc.

Once I either restart BIND through Plesk Panel or

Code:
# service named restart

Everything works perfectly.

My var/log/boot.log shows named started [OK]

When I run

Code:
# service named status

Immediately after reboot everything looks normal, despite not resolving DNS until restarted.

I ran

Code:
# ceckconfig --list

And both httpd & named services are displaying all 'off' on every runlevel. But, obviously named service is starting automatically, maybe by psa?

Should httpd & named be listed as on, is this the problem?

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Set Master NS (SOA) Record Properly (BIND Does Not Notify NS In SOA)

Oct 24, 2014

How to get plesk (12) to set the SOA record properly on existing domains?

Let me explain the issue first. We use PowerDNS supermaster mode as slave servers. The way this works is we configure PowerDNS so that it sees the plesk server as a so called supermaster.

When a so called supermaster notifies the slave servers on a zone update, if it doesn't exist it just adds the zone and pulls it in. This works very nice and without any scripting required (there's only the issue of removing them, I just have a script that deletes all domains that haven't been able to update in 2 weeks every day from the database).

The only issue here is that BIND does *NOT* ever notify the nameserver listed in the SOA. The nameserver listed in the SOA should be the master (and hence - thus plesk itself) and it being a master it should be where the changes occur and notifying it isn't necessary thus, which is why BIND doesn't do that.

Unfortunately plesk doesn't seem to grasp this concept. It will happily put any nameserver in the SOA record. Have adjusted the template and it seems to work ok for new domains now (not sure how reliably though), but it's a major pain for the existing ones. It's very hard to update them properly.

Reapplying template -> no change to master NS/SOA
Switching mode to slave and back to master -> no change to master NS/SOA
Resetting to default -> no change to master NS/SOA

The only way I've found so far is to delete the records manually, add them again and hope it doesn't change the order (yes it does this a lot, you'll have the correct order listed, click apply and the order just changes. Some times it adds them to the bottom of the list, some times to the top - not confusing at all).

Plesk really should be taught that if it's master, it should be the one in the SOA. Whilst my issue is larger due to the supermaster and slaves not creating the zone (and hence my slave not functioning), it is an issue in any setup because a slave listed as SOA will not be notified and doesn't pick up on the changes right away. Depending on the refresh times it might take quite some time for the slave to pick up the change then, which isn't desirable either as it will leave you with a slave that still returns incorrect records.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: CLI Vhost Setup Example?

Nov 22, 2014

I have to move a lot of customers from old home-grown server setup to a plesk panel powered server.I want to use the CLI to do this and wondered if there was a tutorial showing how to setup the customer and add the subscription/hosting plan for that customer?

I looked over the docs and tested them, but the service plan never shows that hosting is added.

# ./customer --create JDoe -name "John Doe" -passwd sample -country US -notify false
# ./subscription --create example.com -owner admin -service-plan "Default Domain" -ip 192.168.1.100 -login JDoe -passwd "user pass"

I get the email saying that the do moan was setup, but the domain does not show that hosting is affiliated with it.

Setup Bind Dns, Apache, And Vsftpd

Nov 11, 2008

I been using plesk, and cpanel so this is the first time I have Webmin for my CentOS.

After some googling and reading, i able to install apache, mysqld and vsftpd (for some reason, my host (hivelocity) didnt install these. So this is my setup.

a.com: in godaddy, i add nameserver host as ns1.a.com and ns2.a.com and change the dns to point to that

b.com: in godday, point dns to ns1.a.com and ns2.a.com
BIND DNS Server

========================

I create two master zone for a.com and b.com
a.com

Code:

$ttl 38400
a.com. IN SOA server.a.com. abc.yahoo.com. (
1226206691
10800
3600
604800
38400 )
a.com. IN A 1.2.3.4
server.a.com. IN A 1.2.3.4
a.com. IN NS server.a.com.
mail.a.com. IN A 1.2.3.4
ftp.a.com. IN CNAME a.com.
www.a.com. IN CNAME a.com.
a.com. IN MX 10 mail.a.com.
b.com
Code:
$ttl 38400

b.com. IN NS server.a.com.
mail.b.com. IN A 1.2.3.4
ftp.b.com. IN CNAME b.com.
www.b.com. IN CNAME b.com.
b.com. IN MX 10 mail.b.com.

APACHE

========================

I created 2 virtual servers for a.com and b.com
/home/sites/a.com/html
/home/sites/b.com/html

I create an index.php in a.com/html with content: "a.com YEAH"

I create an index.php in b.com/html with content: "b.com YEAH"

After wait for dns to propogated,

when i try to go to a.com, content "a.com YEAH" shows up.

But when goto b.com, content "a.com YEAH" shows up? Why?

Also, when goto ns1.a.com, content "a.com YEAH" is there.

I also has problem with vsftpd but let fix that later.
