Setup Nameserver - 1and1 VPS + Netfirms Registrar

Nov 18, 2008

I am wondering how to set up a nameserver on my new VPS with 1and1.

I have all my domains hosted on netfirms.

This is what I have done, but doesnt seem to be working:

i have a domain ex: mycompany.com on netfirms and i created an A Record that is ns1.mydomain.com that points to the ip of the VPS ex: 55.55.55.55

I have also created an ns2.mydomain.com. I did this through the netfirms control panel

Is there anything else i need to do?

Nameserver Setup

Aug 21, 2007

I recently moved hosts and also decided to use what I hope is a more reliable DNS / nameserver setup. So I signed up at everydns.net. I surfed and read for hours and got more confused the more I read.

I finally set up my accounts with the corresponding records as follows:

*.mysite.com CNAME mysite.com
mysite.com A 123.123.123.123
mysite.com MX (10) 1mail.mysite.com
www.mysite.com A 123.123.123.123

My questions are:

1 - Is this pretty much right?
2 - should I have a second MX recored like:
mysite.com MX (10) 2mail.mysite.com

I'm using 4 nameservers >> ns1.everydns.net, ns2.everydns.net, ns3.everydns.net, ns4.everydns.net,

Nameserver Setup

Aug 11, 2007

I just purchased my first dedicated server. It comes with WHM 11.2.0 / CentOS Enterprise 5 i686.

Could someone please refer me to a guide to setup the nameservers? I've tried to follow some guides i found on google but still I can't get websites to resolve.

How do I know my nameservers are working? When I ping them they display the proper IP's and when I enter them in a browser it goes to the cpanel default site that it should but when I park domains to them, they don't work.

Could someone please maybe give me a guide for WHM 11.2.0? Also, some of the guides said to modify /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/nameserverips. I did modfiy /etc/resolv.conf to my information.

If it would make it easier, pretend i'm trying to add ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com as nameservers with the hostname server.domain.com and domain name domain.com. I want ns1.domain.com on ip 74.47.74.47 and ns2.domain.com on ip 74.47.74.48. What would /etc/resolv.conf look like after and what would /etc/nameserverips look like after? And what are the steps to take in WHM to set it up?

1and1, Hardware Setup & Overselling

Out of curiosity, anyone have some stats or more information regarding the 1and1 shared hosting backend? (raid setup, how they "load balance" users across servers, ...)

They seem to use boxes with 4GB of rams, quad 1.6ghz intel processor (xeon 5110), 3.2TB of hdd (90% full). Looking at the /home/ it seem to host more than 10k accounts!

Nameserver Setup On New Server

Aug 14, 2008

I've just installed whm on my new server at leaseweb and wanted to know what nameservers I should put down in whm?

Is it ns1.localdomain.com or ns1.leaseweb.nl?

I suppose I can't set nameservers for my own domain since I've only got one Ip and I would need 2?

Cpanel Nameserver Setup

Feb 21, 2007

Sorry if this sounds confusing its my first time. So i have an account at ev1servers.net/theplanet.com when i signed up i was asked for a domain i could use for the servers main domain which we'll call maindomain.com, my question is when you setup private nameservers do they have to be setup for the main domain e.g. ns1.maindomain.com, ns2.maindomain.com? What i did was setup the name servers for a domain account on my server and i couldn't get it to work which leads me to believe it has to be the main domain.

Nameserver,hostname, DNS Setup...

Nov 3, 2007

I currently have a domain registered at godaddy.com

the domain is NDSuniverse.com

I've ordered a VPS at skodagroup.com, they given me WHT VPS Pro, Cpanel, LXadmin contrtol panel.

quote from e-mail
Custom DNS Server Addresses
=============================
The custom DNS addresses you should set for your domain to use are:
Primary DNS: ns1
Secondary DNS: ns2

You will have to login to your registrar and find the area where you can specify both of your custom name server addresses.

After adding these custom nameservers to your domain registrar control panel, it will take 24 to 48 hours for your domain to delegate authority to your DNS server. Once this has taken effect, your DNS server has control over the DNS records for the domains which use your custom name server addresses.

they didn't give me any nameserver DNS....

How can i get my domain hosted onto my VPS asap? Step by step instructions really needed. thank you.

Also, i have 2 free IPS.

Netfirms Warning

Aug 17, 2008

I recently ran into some problems:

- They doesn't support custom installation of PHPMyAdmin on their servers (You MUST use their own admin panel/pre-installed PMA or activate remote connexions)

I'm not sure to understand why PMA doesn't work, but when you create a PHP Script, you must use "MYSQLHOST" as the server host, instead of the usual "localhost". I think that PMA doesn't use the mysql_connect way to connect to the database. So maybe they doesn't allow TCP or Socket connection.

Anyway, that said, if you don't need a custom installation of PMA, you're OK for that point.

- They doesn't support the PHP FreeTypeLib, if you plan to generate image with the GD lib and add some text into it, it may be hard to get a decent result. ( Here I'm thinking of anti-bot confirmation code )

- They doesn't offer any uptime guarantee, and they have no policy in case your server will encounter sporadic down time (just the one I used did for the past 2 weeks)

... And it would be so much a problem if they where offering a reliable service and/or if they where standing behind their costumers. For that, I've been a little deceived.

{
More about the down time experience:

So we have contacted the support team, who said that the site is working well at the moment where we called. They doesn't seem to understand what an intermittent problem is.

They said that, as they doesn't see the trouble at the time of the call, they canot do anything (I was expecting them to place an http probe/monitor or something)

They asked us to take a screenshot of our browser next time that we encounter a down time. ( yes, I'm NOT kidding... a screenshot ! That's what I call technical support

}

I'm not ready to say that they are a bad hosting service, but, they are a little special as you see.

Netfirms Finally Has Mod_rewrite!

May 1, 2006

Hey guys... Not sure if this was posted yet, couldn't find anything on a first-glance search.

Netfirms has finally added mod_rewrite capabilities as well as better .htacces support! Now I'm completely happy. I was considering switching over to Dreamhost due to the fact that I've started running blog software and messy URLs = crap. Now there's no need. That was pretty much the only thing that was holding me back from a full endorsement, so if anyone's looking for a good cheap hosting plan, here's some of the stuff that I'm really happy about for $5 a month:

- quick, personal customer service (I think there's only 1 or 2 guys, and they always seem to be able to answer my questions on the spot)

- mod_rewrite
- .htaccess
- reliable clean FTP (no _vti files or other annoying folders like so many companies these days)
- good online knowledgebase
- nice online site stats viewer
- a bunch of other great stuff that I probably have forgotten about or don't use
- only $5!

Just thought I'd share in case the news hadn't spread yet. Not sure when they added it, but I noticed the "NEW" sticker today.

So i need an affordable dedicated (or semi-dedicate) with less than $100 a month to host my site. Until it grow and i can move site to local provider (better speed, more expensive)

Currently i aimed to netfirms enterprise 2. it's $69 a month, 100 GB Space/2000 Data Trans.

I have short-listed the hosting services I initially liked down to the following:

1. FatCow
2. An Hosting
3. Host Excellence
4. Netfirms
5. StableHost
6. A Small Orange

Which of them would be most suitable for me. I am about to start a small online business: two websites and a couple of blogs.

I am after proven reliability, 24/7 support, no down time and many resources (which most do anyway).

Can A Nameserver Be Specified In An A Record By Another Nameserver

Apr 4, 2008

1) I use DNSMadeEasy for a couple of my important domains so I can utilize their failover service.

2) I use my own nameservers for everyone else.

At my register (GoDaddy) I've added host entries to my domain (let's call it host.com) for ALL of my nameservers: DNSMadeEasy and mine. For example here are my host entries:

1) nsdme0.host.com = 55.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
2) nsdme1.host.com = 56.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
3) nsdme2.host.com = 57.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
4) nsdme3.host.com = 58.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
5) nsdme4.host.com = 59.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
6) ns1.host.com = 60.55.55.55 (mine)
7) ns2.host.com = 61.55.55.55 (mine)

At the register I've then configured host.com to use the first five nameservers for itself, the DNSMadeEasy nameservers.

For less critical sites that I host I simply point them to ns1.host.com and ns2.host.com, my nameservers.

Now, here's the twist. If I use dig to look up www.host.com I get:

[root@lax1 ~]# dig +trace www.host.com

BUT, if I lookup the nameserver (ns1.host.com) I get:

Code:
[root@lax1 ~]# dig +trace ns1.host.com

; <<>> DiG 9.3.3rc2 <<>> +trace ns1.host.com
;; global options: printcmd
. 218964 IN NS M.ROOT-SERVERS.NET.

...........................................
net. 172800 IN NS G.GTLD-SERVERS.net.
;; Received 497 bytes from 202.12.27.33#53(M.ROOT-SERVERS.NET) in 115 ms

ns1.host.com. 172800 IN A 60.55.55.55
host.com. 172800 IN NS nsdme0.host.com.
host.com. 172800 IN NS nsdme1.host.com.
host.com. 172800 IN NS nsdme2.host.com.
host.com. 172800 IN NS nsdme3.host.com.
host.com. 172800 IN NS nsdme4.host.com.
;; Received 241 bytes from 192.54.112.30#53(H.GTLD-SERVERS.net) in 151 ms

What I've realized is that the actual IP addresses for nameserver host entries come from a higher level server than my own, in this case H.GTLD-SERVERS.net. I guess this makes sense but I just hadn't realized it before. It looks like I don't even need to have record entries in my DNS records for the host nameservers.

Now for the question. Can I:

1) Remove my custom host nameserver entries from my register.

2) Add entries in my DNSMadeEasy records to specify the location of ns1.host.com and ns2.host.com.

3) Use the failover provided by DNSMadeEasy to also fail-over my DNS entries for my nameservers?

I know this would require one more hop if it works but it would allow me to provide failover ability to fifty domains without having to purchase the extra domains at DNSMadeEasy.

If I use my nameservers the domain also resolves correctly, just custom DNS I seem to be having problems with.

I've currently got the following setup at the registrars end:

Having Our Company Name As The Registrar

Oct 15, 2008

Ive done a few whois searches on some of our competitors websites. In the registrar details it has our competitors name as the Registrar and as the nameservers. How can we do this? so for example if someone did a whois on our clients websites, they would see something like this:

Registrar:
OurCompany Ltd [Tag = OurCompany]

Name servers:
ns1.OurCompany.co.uk
ns2.OurCompany.co.uk

Do we need our own nameservers and dedicated server? We've just bought an account with openSRS so we buy our domains through them (if that makes a difference).
