Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Server Health Emailed Alerts / Alarms

Apr 22, 2015

I keep receiving emailed alerts with subject like:
"<server name> alarm level changed"

with content like:

Server health parameter "Memory > Real memory usage" changed its status from "green" to "yellow".
or
Server health parameter "Services > Apache CPU usage" changed its status from "red" to "yellow".

(and then a readout of the top command)

1) Where in Plesk can I see live alerts (or a historical log of these alerts)

2) Where can I change the settings (I think it may be too sensitive and the thresholds need to be adjusted)

3) I don't quite understand the alerts in general either, for example, the "Memory > Real memory usage", the TOP command output is for example:

top - 12:19:59 up 4:56, 1 user, load average: 0.21, 0.21, 0.21
Tasks: 255 total, 1 running, 254 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 5.5%us, 0.7%sy, 0.2%ni, 92.8%id, 0.8%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.1%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 5967176k total, 2539756k used, 3427420k free, 134972k buffers
Swap: 4194300k total, 788k used, 4193512k free, 664916k cached

More than half the memory is unused, very little swap is in use. I don't even see a reason to be warning about this.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Changed Mailserver - Open Xchange Inbox Shows No New Emails

Jun 12, 2015

I changed the Plesk mailserver from Courier to Dovecot. All went good, but after the Install i can not see new E-Mails in my Inbox. Even the Search does not Work.

I can change the Mailserver again and use Courier. This works and i can see my emails. But only with Courier.

Some details:

Inbox has 100 E-mails. After scrolling down to the first emails, i can even see the newest email. But i have to scroll down and load all E-Mails.

Changing "Sort by" from "Date" to "Unread" all emails appear, even the latest. But changing to "Date" the newest email is missing again. Only a Number on my Inbox button shows me there has to be a new email in there.

The Open Xchange Team can not find any errors, the open xchange log looks good.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: High IO By Sa-learn / Spamtrain

Mar 12, 2015

at 6 in the morning sa-learn / spamtrain starts to learn from junk mails. This causes high load on the system und takes about 2-3 hours. Is there any way to change the time to some hours earlier to avoid high load in office hours?

nice -n 19 ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php >/dev/null 2>&1
... to solve the issue, that it didn't seem to have any effect to your CPU/IO usage. Please try as well the full path, if you experience issues, as for example:

/usr/bin/nice -n 19 /usr/bin/ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php >/dev/null 2>&1. Please make sure, that "nice" and "ionice" are located at the given paths and don't just copy&paste the suggestion with the whole path - usage ( you could use "locate nice" / "locate ionice" to verify the paths ).

You asked as well for a different execution time, to avoid high usage during office hours. I would recommend to try several spamtrain - cronjobs, which you might setup with

For Plesk 11 you would use:

nice -n 19 ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f execute-spamtrain >/dev/null 2>&1
/usr/bin/nice -n 19 /usr/bin/ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f execute-spamtrain >/dev/null 2>&1

For Plesk 12 you would use:
nice -n 19 ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f ExecuteSpamtrain >/dev/null 2>&1 /usr/bin/nice -n 19 /usr/bin/ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f ExecuteSpamtrain >/dev/null 2>&1

or use the direct command with: nice -n 19 ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/spamtrain >/dev/null 2>&1/usr/bin/ nice -n 19 /usr/bin/ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/spamtrain >/dev/null 2>&1

If you still would like to exclude one of the daily DailyMaintenance - cronjobs from your "50plesk-daily" script, you have to modify the line /usr/local/ psa/ bin/ sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php >/dev/null 2>&1

to all different parts like:
/usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f Plesk-COMMAND-name1
/usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f Plesk-COMMAND-name2
/usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f Plesk-COMMAND-name3

where you have to leave out the commands, which should not be executed daily. ( Please see the current Plesk-commands for the DailyMaintenance - script with "/usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -l" and be aware that Plesk 11 and Plesk 12 have different commands! )

From time to time, it is wise to clean up the spamassassin - database ( as you already found out with the linked forum-thread), but I would recommend a 6-month-cronjob and not a monthly one. that spamtraining with spamassassin can be very time investing and you should try out addons, filters and rules to find the most efficient configuration for each, unique server - unfortunately there is no "best-for-all" solution.

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: High CPU Wait I/O And Load Average During Backup

May 20, 2014

PRODUCT, VERSION, OPERATING SYSTEM, ARCHITECTURE
Parallels Plesk Panel 11.5.30 MU #44 CentOS 6.5 (Final) 64bit

2 of our our servers are suddenly experiencing high Wait I/O Times, and high Load Averages during the backup process. During this period the Plesk grinds to a halt, sometimes crashing out completely (although SSh is still possible. We have been in talks with our server suppliers (assuming this would be node related) however they have done a lot of testing etc. and categorically state the node is fine , with no other users affecting it.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE : We backup the server using the scheduled backup service and Wait I/O immediately goes up.

ACTUAL RESULT: Plesk downtime / Website downtime

EXPECTED RESULT: No downtime, successful back up

Some other info :
All other processes (MYSQL, apache, Nginx etc) are all running between 1 - 10%

Partition "/usr" utilization 4.2% used (1.81 GB of 43.3 GB) (?)
Partition "/var" utilization 50.6% used (61.8 GB of 122 GB) (?)

We are struggling to identify what has changed on the server that would cause this sudden change.

I already installed FAIL2BAN and DDOS DEFLATE without lock. I have CloudFlare Enabled.

When there is a high CPU load, I have checked netstats, and I don't identify many ips connected, so I think it could be an internet script (or virus).

I will paste the result of

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: How To Stop High Number Of Httpd Processes Crashing Server

May 17, 2014

Our server is running; Plesk 11.0.9 and CentOS 5.7 it has a Q8200 CPU @ 2.33GHz and 2GB of RAM. Now there are just two websites on the server plus a couple of redirects/forwarding domains, although lots of domains are still on the server but turned off in Plesk. Both websites are OSCommerce sites and I just need to keep these sites going until the end of the year when we will switch to our new Joomla based website.

We have seen an increasing number of server crashes and after various checks of the logs, fitting a new BIOS battery, check of the hardware by EasySpace who host the server, installation of ClamAV, LMD and RKHunter (which did find some Trojans and Suspect software), I have traced it down to some external Http activity that is taking all of my CPU time and RAM. Here is a screen capture of the Htop listing and when I killed these processes the CPU and RAM went back to normal. The problem is that I usually have to restart the HTTPD service and sometimes things get so bad that the server crashes and I have to request a power cycle.

Plesk 11.x / Windows :: Site Has Disappeared Though Still Shows Normal In Parallels Panel

Jan 31, 2014

Site has disappeared, though still shows normal in Parallels Panel

I keep a simple site for my art portfolio and some misc files hosted with unlimitedwebhosting.co.uk and Parallels Plesk.

Yesterday I noticed that the site and all its contents give a 404 error, and the home page shows the default page generated by Parallels Plesk Panel. However, all my files are still accessible from ftp and the Panel:

The index.html file is still the same old one as it should be, yet the homepage doesn't show it.

As per the default setup, all the content of the website is in the httpdocs folder, not the root. Though I did try copying the index.html to the root and see if that worked, but it did not. I'm very inexperienced when it comes to web hosting and everything related, so I'm not sure if it's somehow user error or if I should try to contact Parallels.

Here's a history of emails I received from them - notice how the invoices are followed by multiple payment confirmations:

So perhaps cancelling the one payment made them think I wanted to cancel the hosting and the site was taken offline? I don't know.

RAID Health Status

Oct 15, 2009

I have a PROMISE TECH hardware raid card running a 4 disk RAID 10 array. I logged into today to check the drive statuses which were:

Drive 1: OK
Drive 2: OK
Drive 3: OK
Drive 4: OK, PFA

So they all look to be okay, but that 4th disk has PFA (I'm guessing that stands for predicted failure analysis) but I am not sure if that means its predicting a fail, or just stating that the technology is running?

Also, this array is the system drive on a server which has much too little memory, (there is usually 5-7GB PF swap during the day) and I'm concerned that the drives constantly under that stress are more prone to fail. They are 2.5" SAS 10k Fujitsu if that means anything.

High-End Linux Hosts

My company's done shared hosting with our web site thus far. (I've gathered that the best of the best in shared hosting include Steadfast, DowntownHost, HostGator, Lunar Pages, and WebzPro. Any to add to the list, feel free!)

We're now thinking about moving to higher end hosting, i.e. a dedicated or managed server. So my questions are:

- Who are the biggest names and best quality Linux hosts in this category? That is, if those I mentioned above are "bargain" hosts, who are the "high end" hosts?

- What is the difference between a "virtual private server," a dedicated server, and a managed server? Ideally we'd like to still have a hosting package where security is taken care of and there's a lot of customer support to fix problems, but with our own dedicated resources.
