Plesk 11.x / Linux :: WD Preventing Shutdown / Reboot
Jun 5, 2014
PRODUCT, VERSION, MICROUPDATE, OPERATING SYSTEM, ARCHITECTURE
Plesk Panel 11.5.30#46
Centos 6.5
AuthenticAMD, AMD Opteron(TM) Processor 6272
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
Upon a shutdown or reboot, the system shuts down sw-collectd. Further along, it will end wdcollect and the following will occur:
init: psa-wdcollect main process (pid) killed by KILL signal
init: psa-wdcollect main process ended, respawning
wdcollect[pid]: Language en-US is used for sending e-mail messages.
wdcollect[pid]: Failed to connect to database server during the startup. New attempts will be made if needed.
wdcollect[pid]: Server started
I believe this is preventing the un-mounting of drives which in the end freezes the shutdown process on:
Please stand by while rebooting the system...
After this occurs, I have to force the VM off and then boot again.
I have tried the following:[URL] .....

So Everything was going great! Until I needed to reboot, and then after that only Plesk panel worked not my IP or any domains setup with it.
BUT when I restart Nginx it all starts working again! (Had to /usr/local/psa/admin/bin/httpdmng --reconfigure-all to get the domains to go to the right directory though)
But now everytime I reboot the server Nginx has to be restarted
Is this Normal?
I`m running Plesk 12 fresh clean install yesterday
CentOS 7 64BitÂ

Two month ago I installed plesk 11.5 on my server (with centos 6 or 7 I don't remember) Then i added my domain.com by clicking on "Add New Domain" and using the auto dns system configuration. All worked great. During this period, Parallels Plesk was auto updating to 12.x 1 week ago, I restarted my server, and my website was down (I think because DNS problem with 12.x or ip problem or port closed...)
So I formatted my dedicated server, then I reinstall Parallels Plesk 11 (with centos 6) and the website worked great. Then I re-formatted my dedicated server, then I installed Parallels Plesk 12 (with centos 7) and the website did not work.
So I think the problem come from plesk 12
This is how I process to configure my website on plesk 12 :
1. This is a 1&1 domain and an OVH dedicated server.
So I configure DNS like that :
1rst name server : nsXXXXXX.eu
2nd name server : sdns2.ovh.net
2. On plesk, i click on "Add New Domain"
Capture : [URL] ...
3. I wait for DNS propagation but it doesn't work...
Capture of DNS checker [URL] ....

Just upgraded from Plesk 11.5 to 12. (CentOS 6.4)
Everything is working but when I reboot the server using the Plesk CP it never comes back up. No CP, no domains, no SSH.
If I reboot it using the 1&1 CP it re-boots fine.

SETUP:
CentOS 6.3, 64 bit.
Plesk 11.09, Update #10.
I enabled Watchdog in Plesk.
It works fine.
However, it doesn't start up by itself after a server reboot.
I can start it manually with the following command:
/usr/local/psa/admin/bin/modules/watchdog/wd --start (which I have done by adding it to /etc/rc.local)
Shouldn't Plesk do this automatically?

Recently upgraded to Plesk 11.5 & upgraded to the latest CentOS kernel. Whenever I reboot the server DNS services do not work, can't view any websites hosted on the server etc.
Once I either restart BIND through Plesk Panel or
Code:
# service named restart
Everything works perfectly.
My var/log/boot.log shows named started [OK]
When I run
Code:
# service named status
Immediately after reboot everything looks normal, despite not resolving DNS until restarted.
I ran
Code:
# ceckconfig --list
And both httpd & named services are displaying all 'off' on every runlevel. But, obviously named service is starting automatically, maybe by psa?
Should httpd & named be listed as on, is this the problem?

OSCentOS 5.6 (Final)
Panel version11.0.9 Update #61
The system is up-to-date; last checked at June 6, 2014 03:32 AM
I use pingdom to alert me when sites go down. It would happen only once every few weeks, and I'd just reboot the VPS from my provider's control panel, however in the last 24 hours it has started doing it more and more often. The only change I have made in this time is to delete a few unused web sites.
When I get alerted, I check the the domains and they won't load. I look at the plesk control panel page thought and that does work.
I can SSH in, but I can't see anything that might work in the messages log.
I removed the plesk control panel error as that only seemed to happen once and is not happening anymore.
I saw quite a few entries in the /var/log/secure log and so I added iptables rules to only allow SSH access from my own IP and to DROP all other requests. It seemed fine for a while, but after 12 hours it has started becoming unresponsive again until reboot.

I'm just wondering what a few good techniques to prevent DDoS would be. What causes them? How can I protect my server against them? I noticed that Apache has something called mod_evasive which helps against them. Does lighttpd have something like this?

I recently logged into my Windows Server 2003 OS Server via Remote Desktop and was met with a message/box saying Why did this computer shutdown. It had a dropdown field for a reason and then empty text fields for Problem ID and Comment.
What steps can I take to figure out what happened?

So justgotvps.com gives me a pageload error, and now when I go to any of my (many) domains that are hosted on JustGotVPS I get some "Close my sale for me" BS site?
I can't SSH/Telnet into my VPS anymore (connection refused). Did I just get scammed for 6 months worth of fees? Time to reverse the charges; I'm more pissed because I just got set up there and I don't have a recent backup with the new configuration...

I have a very perplexing problem. Like clockwork, every 7 days I find my Windows 2003 server to be unresponsive. I use remote desktop to login to find that it has unexpectedly shutdown. The even code is 6008 and I researched it through the MS link and it says it can be cause by unplugging the power cord or manually rebooting the server through a switch. Is it possible the UPS at my host has my server on some sort of timer that automatically kills the power once a week? There aren't any scheduled tasks to reboot it, and this is a fresh install as far as I know.

Is there a way to prevent a certain service from taking up a certain amount of load on the server?
Like, shouldn't there be a way I can tell gzip or exim how much server load they are allowed to take up on my server?
I know it may run them slower, but it will be for the better if I could set each one to only be able to have a max load peak or something.

The images I am trying to block are on page generated by a simple PHP script on my server. The offender has replicated what I am doing with ASP on their server. They are hotlinking to my images for the resulting page. They left my website's name on them, so they must think that giving credit is enough.
I'm going to be contacting them to stop but I also want to see if there is a way for me to prevent it from happening in the first place.
I tried mod_rewrite...
Code:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^[url].*$ [NC]
RewriteRule .(gif|jpg)$ - [F]
I know mod_rewrite works on my server because I've been using it for some other things.
However, whenever I enable the above code (add it to the directives and restart apache - have also tried just putting it in a .htaccess file in the appropriate directory), I end up with images still being allowed on my domain and the other domain I'm trying to stop from using my images. Do you think it could have to do with an absent referrer? I read that the code doesn't work if the referrer is blank. What else would cause this not to work? Obviously the domain would have to be correct, but it doesn't block from my domain OR the offending domain.
I tried another method:
Code:
<FilesMatch ".(gif¦jpg¦png)$">
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer ^$ allow_image
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer ^[url] allow_image
Order Deny,Allow
Deny from all
Allow from env=allow_image
</FilesMatch>
This one blocked images to the offending domain, but it also blocked mine!

I am currently using IPB as my forum software. I've enabled admin validation only for registrations, to combat the increasing amount of spam signups. I see a lot of .ru and .cn email signups, or other suspicious signups, which I always delete.
What is the best way to combat these spammers?
I've been considering something like WHT uses, that you need X posts before being able to post links, how can I accomplish this with IPB?

I am running a hosting service. Recently a user put a phishing site on the server, pretending to be an eBay signup page and soliciting passwords. I had all kind of truble with this, because eBay complained to my server company.
I would like to ask if you know any solution what would block such sites automatically?
It could search for some predefined texts on the page (such as "sign in to eBay") and block the page if they are found. I wasn't able to find anything in Apache documentation.

Apparently, there are two files on my website that are being hit quite a bit, and causing the server to slow down. (I admit, its a busy site, and the files are very big).
The files aren't new there, and neither is the traffic, but the plug was pulled with no warning what so ever, and no offer of remediation on their part beyond refunding the remaining portion of my contract (I would hope so too!).
I can understand that they may not be able to continue to host my site due to the volume of traffic it generates, but they really could have handled this much better.

I am a SolarVPS customer. So far, I have been really happy with their service - setup was very smooth, I had to contact support a couple of times at the start and they were really quick, and otherwise I've had simply no problems.
I was alerted yesterday to the fact that my site was down. I immediately logged into the box, and found that Apache and MySQL had stalled. I restarted them, and everything was ok. So then I started to look into the problem.
Then I noticed this in my logs:
Sep 3 23:07:26 myvps shutdown[26281]: shutting down for system halt
Sep 3 23:08:41 myvps exiting on signal 15
Sep 4 03:14:22 myvps syslogd 1.4.1#18: restart.
It seems that my VPS was shut down for 4 hours and then brought back up. My Apache and MySQL didn't come back up properly after the restart (ok, my fault here, a configuration issue), so I was down for about 17 hours.
Anyway, I didn't do this shutdown, and I don't think my box was hacked and someone else did it, because even if they did, by my reasoning, it wouldn't have been down for 4 hours.
So I wrote an email to SolarVPS. They got back to me really quickly, asking me to send my server ip's and my root password (I had initially only sent my customer number). I was not really happy sending my root password over email to them, so I just sent them the server IP's.
I then got an email back saying that it was standard procedure to send my root password to the over email, and that it was secure because their helpdesk is secure. I don't know how they are securing the email connection from me to their helpdesk though (of course, it isn't secure, because email is sent in plain text), so I still haven't sent them this. I don't need them to log into my server anyway, I can see that it went down, I just wanted to know if they had brought the machine down for a reason. The whole root password over email thing is not the problem anyway.
What concerned me is the rest of their response.
They told me that they had not brought the machine down on purpose. I sent them the log lines I pasted above, and their response was:
- shows that your VPS has been shut down, just like the owner of the VPS would have shut it down using "halt" command. This issue appears when the VPS is overloaded (RAM is almost 100% used, and CPU is upto 90-100%), and in this case Virtouzzo shuts the VPS down in order to avoid resources abuse on the entire node and not to affect the other VPS's.
This is the part that concerns me. As I understood it, the Virtualization software is there to keep you in a box, and restrict the amount of resources that a person can take up so it doesn't affect others. If my server is under heavy load, I can understand if it becomes slow, but I don't find it acceptable for it to be shut down for 4 hours!
Is this usual policy for VPS's? If this is the case, I guess I'm going to have to look for dedicated, because this is not acceptable to me. Although my server is rarely under high load, I don't want to have to worry that it might disappear for hours if it is.
It would be great to hear some opinions from people with more experience in this area than me. If true, this is definitely something people should mention as a disadvantage to VPS's.

I can't get SELinux to let httpd load the IonCube module for PHP. I've given the CentOS 5 forum a try (here: http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/...15403&forum=42), talked with WHMCS's support (the app I'm using that needs it), and even opened a ticket with IonCube. Unfortunately nobody seems to know how to tell SELinux to let httpd "exec" modules.
I'm running CentOS 5, and the error I'm getting in /var/log/messages is:
Jul 23 10:15:30 host kernel: audit(1216833330.905:1249): avc: denied { execheap } for pid=22055 comm="httpd" scontext=root:system_r:httpd_t:s0 tcontext=root:system_r:httpd_t:s0 tclass=process
I can disable SELinux and it works fine (setenforce 0), but that's not the solution I'm looking for. Can someone please tell me how to do this the *right* way?
