Hostmonster - Site Shutdown Because Its Busy
Jun 3, 2009
Wanted to share a bit (read vent a bit if you're cynical ).
Just got the following e-mail from hostmonster.

Dear Dale:

Although your web site has been disabled, your data may still be available for up to 15 days, after which it will be deleted.

Apparently, there are two files on my website that are being hit quite a bit, and causing the server to slow down. (I admit, its a busy site, and the files are very big).
The files aren't new there, and neither is the traffic, but the plug was pulled with no warning what so ever, and no offer of remediation on their part beyond refunding the remaining portion of my contract (I would hope so too!).
I can understand that they may not be able to continue to host my site due to the volume of traffic it generates, but they really could have handled this much better.

Can anybody suggest a large hosting company based in France?
I'm looking for hosting that can handle a high bandwith, high profile, busy website. We will require excellent customer support and a professional attitude.

I think it's already high values, Is it safe to increase it?

I recently logged into my Windows Server 2003 OS Server via Remote Desktop and was met with a message/box saying Why did this computer shutdown. It had a dropdown field for a reason and then empty text fields for Problem ID and Comment.
What steps can I take to figure out what happened?
Server is a fresh install of Win Server 2003

So justgotvps.com gives me a pageload error, and now when I go to any of my (many) domains that are hosted on JustGotVPS I get some "Close my sale for me" BS site?
I can't SSH/Telnet into my VPS anymore (connection refused). Did I just get scammed for 6 months worth of fees? Time to reverse the charges; I'm more pissed because I just got set up there and I don't have a recent backup with the new configuration...

I have a very perplexing problem. Like clockwork, every 7 days I find my Windows 2003 server to be unresponsive. I use remote desktop to login to find that it has unexpectedly shutdown. The even code is 6008 and I researched it through the MS link and it says it can be cause by unplugging the power cord or manually rebooting the server through a switch. Is it possible the UPS at my host has my server on some sort of timer that automatically kills the power once a week? There aren't any scheduled tasks to reboot it, and this is a fresh install as far as I know.

i frequently read these forums for offers/to stay up to date with web hosting in general.
I never felt the need to register until now.
I have experienced what i believe to be sub-standard service from my paid hosting.
Here's what happened:
I got up, as usual to check my emails and i was hit with the following email
Your web hosting account for xxxxxxxx has been deactivated (reason: terms of service violation).
Although your web site has been disabled, your data may still be available for
up to 15 days, after which it will be deleted.
If you feel this deactivation is in error, please contact customer support as

I checked my domain, it returned nothing.
I don't believe that i have committed any terms of service violation and i am quite peeved off with the results.
My account was just suddenly deactivated with no warning, my domain (also registered via them) no longer works (i have no way of telling current visitors whats happened, the domain just wont work) and i have 15 days to contact them (via email) as phone is not an option as i live out of the US.
Not to mention after all that, i wouldn't review host-monster very greatly at all for speed, at first it was great but it just kept degrading from there until it was just extremely poor.
One thing they did do right was refund me (but i bet it doesn't include the domain) so ill be taking that money and my business else ware.

i'm hosting a forum (~80 simultalinous users online) In a VDS 512 MB RAM, Linux Debian with apache 1.3 and mysql 4.1 , php4.
Apache seems to be busy, pages don't even load, this can be resolved by restating apache. and after a couple of time (about 4 hours) it does the same thing again, and i do have to restart it again and looping ...
Here is my httpd.conf file :
Code:

In general I have been happy with hostmonster. Mostly because their support staff is polite and are willing to help. However, I do question the server reliability at times.
Lately when a customer registers at my forum or gallery, the customer does not get the activation email 4 or 5 hours later. Today, I tested it and sure enough, the activation email took 4 or 5 hours before it came.
I talked to tech support and they acknowledged they had over 250,000 emails backed up. That there are too many connections with hotmail accounts and that was causing a problem as well.
A customer having to wait 4 or 5 hours before they receive an activation email seems a bit long.
I'm not sure if hostmonster is going to do anything to prevent this from happening in the future, but for now they seem to be satisfied with the emails backing up on the server and the time it takes for them to be sent. They indicated this does not happen often, but I really don't know since I don't send myself emails on a daily basis.
I would rate email as one of the most important functions there is for a webmaster. Otherwise, hostmonster staff has been responsive and my hope is this will not be a constant problem.
If there are any other hostmonster webmasters out there, I would appreciate your feedback. You may have to send yourself a registration or a email to test it.

What minimum VPS specs should I be looking for to support a PHPBB3 forum that uses 100GB/mth bandwidth and has 50 concurrent users at peak times (measured by PHPBB, so not real-time concurrent)?
And are there any suggestions for inexpensive ($30 or less) options that would be worth trying? Have never used a VPS before.
If not, are there any shared hosting providers that specialize in hosting message boards like PHPBB?

I am a SolarVPS customer. So far, I have been really happy with their service - setup was very smooth, I had to contact support a couple of times at the start and they were really quick, and otherwise I've had simply no problems.
I was alerted yesterday to the fact that my site was down. I immediately logged into the box, and found that Apache and MySQL had stalled. I restarted them, and everything was ok. So then I started to look into the problem.
Then I noticed this in my logs:
Sep 3 23:07:26 myvps shutdown[26281]: shutting down for system halt
Sep 3 23:08:41 myvps exiting on signal 15
Sep 4 03:14:22 myvps syslogd 1.4.1#18: restart.
It seems that my VPS was shut down for 4 hours and then brought back up. My Apache and MySQL didn't come back up properly after the restart (ok, my fault here, a configuration issue), so I was down for about 17 hours.
Anyway, I didn't do this shutdown, and I don't think my box was hacked and someone else did it, because even if they did, by my reasoning, it wouldn't have been down for 4 hours.
So I wrote an email to SolarVPS. They got back to me really quickly, asking me to send my server ip's and my root password (I had initially only sent my customer number). I was not really happy sending my root password over email to them, so I just sent them the server IP's.
I then got an email back saying that it was standard procedure to send my root password to the over email, and that it was secure because their helpdesk is secure. I don't know how they are securing the email connection from me to their helpdesk though (of course, it isn't secure, because email is sent in plain text), so I still haven't sent them this. I don't need them to log into my server anyway, I can see that it went down, I just wanted to know if they had brought the machine down for a reason. The whole root password over email thing is not the problem anyway.
What concerned me is the rest of their response.
They told me that they had not brought the machine down on purpose. I sent them the log lines I pasted above, and their response was:
- shows that your VPS has been shut down, just like the owner of the VPS would have shut it down using "halt" command. This issue appears when the VPS is overloaded (RAM is almost 100% used, and CPU is upto 90-100%), and in this case Virtouzzo shuts the VPS down in order to avoid resources abuse on the entire node and not to affect the other VPS's.
This is the part that concerns me. As I understood it, the Virtualization software is there to keep you in a box, and restrict the amount of resources that a person can take up so it doesn't affect others. If my server is under heavy load, I can understand if it becomes slow, but I don't find it acceptable for it to be shut down for 4 hours!
Is this usual policy for VPS's? If this is the case, I guess I'm going to have to look for dedicated, because this is not acceptable to me. Although my server is rarely under high load, I don't want to have to worry that it might disappear for hours if it is.
It would be great to hear some opinions from people with more experience in this area than me. If true, this is definitely something people should mention as a disadvantage to VPS's.

It seems siteground has a better plan(more space, traffic bandwidth, other feature) but hostmonster allow ssh access and I think that maybe good for installing our own software.
I also interested to see if anyone uses there free shopping cart software like osCommerce, zencart and cubecart.
Anyone has any trouble with them in PHP5 environment?

it's getting to the point where I need to optimize MySQL to better handle a busy server.
These days it seems MySQL is using 30% - 60% CPU almost constantly. But, the good news is that I've got 4 gigs of ram on this box and their seems to be an access of 600mb free constantly throughout the day.
Is it possible to tweak MySQL to a little more RAM dependent and take some of the load off the CPU? It seems MySQL wont go over 300mb of ram at any given time.. I'm already working on optimizing the SQL Querys on the web page itself.

I am using apache 2.2 webserver and tomcat 6 as app server.
I have two unix boxes (let say A and B) where apache is installed for load balancing purpose.
The issue is now and then I see that on both the server reaches to 250 busy servers which makes my site very slow and after some time the site is unaccessible.
When I see this I restart apache on both unix boxes and also restart my app server.
But that does not work. As soon as I start apache the httpd process ramps up to 12 (ps -ef | grep httpd) within a minute and the busy servers still remains at 250.
The only I have to do is wait and watch till the busy servers goes down to 250 and then site is back to normal.
Some times it takes hours for busy servers to go down below 250.
I dont understand that why even restarting apache and tomcat doesn't work. why the busy servers are still at 250. even after I restart.
This is what I have in httpd.conf
<IfModule worker.c>
ServerLimit 80
StartServers 2
MaxClients 250
MinSpareThreads 25
MaxSpareThreads 75
ThreadsPerChild 25
MaxRequestsPerChild 0
</IfModule>
I tried to increase MaxClients to 300, which also didn't work and apache or httpd process shuts down by itself.
