OpenVZ - HN Can't Ping VE
I'm running my own OpenVZ server with a few VPS's running on it and have a small network issue.
I can't ping any VE from the HN. All the other networking is working ok (strangely I can ping the HN from the VE) apart from this. It's a simple setup with one network card connected to the internet.
OpenVZ the latest stable version running on CentOS 5.2
I'm pretty sure it's not a firewall problem but is something to do with arp or routing and one of the settings in sysctl.conf
Has anyone else seen this?

Invalid Command 'php_flag' - After Recompiling PHP & Apache?
After I recompiled Apache and PHP using easyapache from cPanel, we started getting all these weird errors. I'm getting a few people now complaining about not being able to enable register_globals. I believe (after searching) that having this enabled is a big security risk and shouldn't need to be used. However, some people apparently where using .haccess and php_flag to enable this. I did find on a few places that people can create their own php.ini file to emulate what was previously done with .htaccess? After searching around.. I found out that Register Globals can become a security risk based on the scripts configuration that uses it. This feature normally can be enabled via .htaccess using the glad "php_flag register_globals On". Creating a file called php.ini inside the directory of the site with the flag "register_globals=on" I believe will also enable this option. To enable this option on a global scale, you can edit '/usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/etc/php.ini', but its not recommended. However.. We are unable to get the php.ini concept to work. Is there something I need to do to enable/allow users to do this for their account?

Any 'easy' Smtp / Pop / Imap Package Or Installer W/o Having To Read Up On Exim Etc.?
any 'easy' smtp / pop / imap package or installer w/o having to read up on exim etc.? I want an email server quickly, w/o having to become an expert... I'd go w/ a hosted service, but I open allot of pop3 connections... (program I use downloads one email, closes connection, reopens... repeat)... There's lots of cookbooks out there, but they require quite a bit more time commitment (and configurability) than I want / need. Is there any dumbified installs available? I tried with webmin, but even that wants me to manually configure a postfix / imap server bridge.=

BoxVPS = Useless | STAY AWAY From This 'company'
URL: http://www.boxvps.com Their recent promotion thread: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=889733 Extremely non-professional service. Took them 48 hours to setup my VPS. Also had to create a support ticket. And when it was finally delivered, there was no DirectAdmin on it. Specially disturbing, since I actually paid for a monthly license. Not to mention that their responses are very vague. They claim to apply the promotions (triple disk space, double bandwidth) 24 hours after they setup the VPS. I have no idea why they do that. Moreover, they have false advertising on their VPS page (Instant Activation..where it should read 'We don't activate your VPS unless you create a support ticket). A speedtest from the VPS showed that the VPS is capable of bursting to a maximum of 10mbps, while average speed is barely 2mbps. Stay away from these guys. They're potential scammers. They WILL scam.. sooner or later.

After figuring out that TUX has some problems I reverted everything but not this mount --bind command.. What is the reverse command for this, so everything will come back to the point which they were before?

Ping Is Down, Http Is Up
My sites are up when I go to http and there is no slowdown but my monitors (panopta and pingdom) say that there is an outage in ping (only in ping, http is up). I tried pinging the server and there are packet loss up to 100% but the site is still up. I also used other online pinging tools (all-nettools.com, dnsstuff.com, etc.) and host unreachable. I tried contacting the provider but they say there are no network problem at this time. So I found this other site that's also hosted on the same provider and I can access their site but fails on ping.

My Ping/packets Lost
I'm getting slow server response times I've been struggling with this for quite some while. Here is what I know so far: 1. My website divinelightingdotcom through justping returns average 60-80% packets lost for all locations but Santa Clara, which usually has 0-20% loss. 2. My VPS is in Dallas 3. My ISP is also in Dallas, yet justping their website returns 0 packets lost 4a. When I ping my site from Atlanta, the avg trip is 44 ms 4b. However, the first access of my website through a browser usually takes about 5-10 seconds to respond 4c. I assume that my customers have this same experience (if so, this is killing me on my sponsored search advertising) 5. subsequent navigation through the website is usually acceptably fast. 6. wait an hour or so, and the initial page load has 5-10 second response delay again (can be any page on the site) 7. perhaps related, WinMTR from my location in Atlanta shows an comcast IP in virginia that consistently has 20% loss. I have opened a trouble ticket with Comcast.

My concern is, when I ping both servers from the same location, server B's times are nearly twice server B (90+ ms versus 48ms). How big of a difference will larger ping times like this make with respect to the end user (e.g., web page loading, etc?)

Understanding Ping/traceroute Times?
I'm looking into knownhost and they offer twice the bandwidth in their California option for the same money. Jay from known host said I should pick the one with the best ping times. I'd like to put the information here so someone might perhaps tell me what my best choice is. I'll put the stats here and then if you could tell me which one is better (Texas vs. California) that would be great. But if you think that the times between the two are only marginal (both real good), then could you help me decide about getting double the bandwidth for the same price. I know nothing of course, but the two data centers look like their both giving great speeds (Texas being better though). But perhaps both speeds are great. If that's the case, can anyone tell me why someone would not take the higher bandwidth offer? Thanks, I really appreciate any help with this! Here is the info... Ping Results For My VPS - Acceptable
We run our company website on a VPS. Now we do notice, that quite frequently, the connection times out or the server responds slowly. A friend of mine said the VPS could be the issue of this. I ran a ping test today for several hours, sending one ping with 16 bytes with a timeout set to 3 seconds. From 18000 pings sent (5 hours), 120 failed. Which comes to one failure in 150 pings, or one failure every 2.5 minutes. Is this still an acceptable failure rate or do I have reason to contact our VPS provider? According to our own usage statictics, we are not using much of the server's capacities.
