Nortel 455x Series Comparable Cisco Model
Sep 14, 2009
I used so far Nortel switches like Nortel 4550T-PWR, recently few of them died and since they have only 1 year of warranty i'm looking into other options.
To Nortel is this Cisco comparable model Catalyst 3750 (p/n: WS-C3750-48TS-S) or this Catalyst 3560 48 10/100 + 4 SFP IPB Image(p/n: WS-C3560-48TS-S) ? If is some other model please let me know, and i got around 20 nortel switches 2xxx, 4xxx and 5xxx series and at at least once a year one dies is that normal? They are properly installed in server rooms so there is no overheat issue.
And how much warranty Cisco gives on their switches which are comparable to 4xxx and 5xxx series of Nortel.

I'm researching hardware alternatives to the Foundry switches we currently employ in our DCs. I'm focusing in on the Cisco 3750G-24TS, which seems to cover all the bases I need from a hardware standpoint. What I'm looking for from this crowd is any information they can share about that switch from a service & reliability perspective, especially how Cisco has treated you when you run into problems with the devices.

I happen to have a Nortel 2500 and 2600 they have really hit there limits and looking to a few alts... preferably open source or low cost... I have about 500 instant internet end points and slowly moving each location to a AVTS circuit (manage VPN via ATT).
So would any one know of a concentrator to work with nortel?...

I'm wondering if here are any hosts out there that give things comparable to offers on kimsufi (more specificaly, the 19.99€ package)
I want a server that has good ram and HDD, but the bandwidth doesn't matter much. I like the fact that it is unlimited on kimsufi even though it's 100mbps not guaranteed since the speed is not much of a problem, it's just that I don't have to watch out for bandwidth quotas. (lazyness)
I see offers that are around 50$ US and they offer only 512mb of ram and 80gb HDD with less than a TB of bandwidth and that isn't enough for me since I want to upload a lot of personnal files trough FTP to backup for example.
I really want something cheap, but comparable in specs to kimsufi offers. The reason I'm looking for alternatives is because I'm having lot of trouble going trough their order process and the technicians aren't helping much.

I was a reseller with WebstrikeSolutions for almost a decade and now, sadly, they are gone. Swallowed up by EasyCGI...don't know if they are any good or not but the few opinions I did manage to find haven't been very favorable at all. Plus, somewhere in the transition my credit card info got out into the world and the very next day after being billed by EasyCGI, fraudulant charges showed up on my credit card which I had to cancel! Not sure if it's a coincidence or not but the timing seems odd...so if you believe in signs, I'm thinking that that just might be one saying it's time to move on...
So, I am now looking for a replacement host. Unfortunately, trying to find out anything about the various companies by searching Google results in nothing more than a tangled mess of "review" sites that are nothing more than paid advertising for whichever hosts pays the most to be number one!
I am looking for a Windows host in the neighborhood of <$10 a month. I have been considering ReliableSite.net, m6.net, godaddy.com (except I use them to register my domain names so that might be a bad idea) and **************.com (why is a-c-cuwebhosting.com blocked out?). Any opinions about any of the above would be greatly appreciated. Of course, if anybody (other than a company owner or marketing guy/gal) has any experience with somebody else I would love to hear from you.
Now, as for requirements, my bandwidth needs are relatively low and storage doesn't need to be enormous but once my standard sites are up and running I would like the ability to offer customers individual website packages utilizing oscommerce (possibly) as their storefronts to allow them to sell their own products. Basically online stores that they don't have to code or setup themselves. That's the long term goal. Right now I just want to get my sites back online so that I can maintain and update them without incident.

Are there any other data center's out their that compare to the superb network reliability/redundancy & premium bandwidth that these 2 provide?
DataPipe has a full rack minimum - so that's out of the question.
Xiolink is extremely pricey and quoted me over $1,000/month per TB.
There has to be an in-between. I will be co-locating a 3U server to start out with, and I don't really have a specific location in mind yet, however I am looking for something that is generally faster and more stable then 85-90% of the other providers out their - both DataPipe and Xiolink seem to fall into that category. I haven't seen any other mention of providers as prestigious as these.(besides rackspace, but they don't offer colo).
I'll be providing the management for the server.

Does the single physical processor Core 2 Duo beat the Dual (physical) CPU AMD Opteron 244 in general?
I am curious as I don't see many people offering them anymore, and someone told me that the Core 2 Duos are actually faster than the 2 CPU Opteron I am talking about.

I have decided to finally remove all my servers rented from provider to provider to one single place.
I want to manage everything, so basically route the traffic (at this time without BGP or OSPF), my current average of traffic for all servers together would be about 15 Mbit/s with top at 35-45 Mbit/s.
I want to buy a cheap router (no computer router), I'd like to buy a chassis with very extensible and upgradable router, so I can start with a basic card and later use BGP (and maybe OSPF) and have ability to push from 30 Mbit/s (to over 1000 Mbit/s by upgrading cards and memory).
So, which (refurbished or not) chassis can I buy ? Which card would you setup with it ?
The important is really the ability to start with low cost configuration and go up to very high rates without having to change all (of course once I will be average over...).

I have 2 dedicated servers to host several websites at this moment. Each server hosts several website, include both files and database (Apache, PHP, Mysql). And I think that this is not a good model.
I intend to re-organize my servers to have one server for web applications (Apache and PHP) and one server for databases (Mysql). In this case, the servers could be better optimized.
What OS should be used for each server?

trying to understand the colocation business model (for webhosting).
Am I right in assuming that following business model:
1. Rent a portion (or full) rack from datacenter, e.g. calpop.com
2. Buy servers and get them shipped to datacenter
3. For unmanaged servers, typically most support will be limited to reboots, reinstall of OS/control panel, and server hardware issues - correct?
4. Provide basic support, or sign-up with companies like bobcare.com to provide support to clients who order server
One-time cost (for 1-3 years): Cost of dedicated server hardware
Ongoing monthly costs: rack rental + outsourced support (optional)
...plus marketing costs....
Please let me know if I missed something or overlooked details...

I'm running a fresh install of Plesk 12 on Ubuntu. I've used the migration manager to import domains and accounts from another (older) installation. Everything worked well.
After the process, Plesk suggested the "Complete Switching to the new Plesk business model". After switching, half of the Domains didn't show up anymore (not in Subscribtions, nor in a Customer Account) and the Domains page was completely blank. But if I check the page "Traffic Usage By Domains", the Domains still show up and they are still in the vhosts folder and they are still accessible.
So I guess the Domains are still in the database, they just lost the connection to a subscription or customer. How can I restore this connection?

I've asked sales a few times but they don't seem to know...what counts as a "website?" In PPA as a test we set up two subscriptions and one mail-only secondary domain on one of them. The Services/Websites tab lists all three, but only two are marked as Website under Hosting Type while the third is marked No Hosting. Does that count as two websites for license purposes, or three?
I'm trying to plan for multiple domains, subdomains, etc.

Does anyone know a way to put Virtuozzo on a Nehalem node?
Secondly, do these Nehalem's have a great increase in Virtualization like they say, versus the 5450 series?
I would like to know this just for general reference. Because in a VPS to VPS envoironment are these really better? If there's no solution to this I guess the best solution would be a 7xxx 16 core Xeon, what's your opinions on that?

In one of our racks, we now just have two Procurve (J4900B) switches, and run software firewalls on our CentOS servers. We are now looking towards a hardware firewall to ease managment and reduce load on our servers.
One of our suppliers reccomends the SSG140 from Juniper, and it seems to cover our needs. The SSG320 however seems to have more features, like layer3 routing. Could this device replace our Procurve switches, and act as a firewall/switch?
Anyone familiar with these devices and have some input on what to choose? How does the anti-ddos and bruteforce attack functions work out, do they hold up? Anyone tested the Deep Inpspection Signature module? Is it worth having for a ISP/Webhost?

What is the difference between the Intel 5000V, 5000X, and 5000P? I have done some research on this and depending on the manufacturer they can all be identical. The only difference that I noticed on certain boards was the amounts of memory it can handle. Is that it?

Recently I've tested the usage of domain keys on my plesk 12 server. The feature works without problems. I'm wondering however if it's possible to activate the domain keys by a service plan or subscription model. If not, for all my domains (65) I've to activate them manually and for each domain iIll create in the future I have to activate it too.
