Hostway Service No Longer Good - Hosting Is Down Today
I used to recommend Hostway.com to other companies, as they host our eCommerce site as a shared hosting site and their uptime and customer service were very good.
But, NEVER AGAIN. Today, they have been down ALL DAY since around 10:30 am (they would not give me the exact time) and so has our business site! I called twice and the wait time the first time for a tech support person was over 1 hour! IN-FRIGGING-CREDIBLE! The 2nd call a few hours later was at least a 45 minute wait.
The answer I got was that they had a hard drive crash and my site is unlucky enough to live on that drive. Understandable, but their explanation that it takes ALL DAY to restore a hard drive from tape is incredible (or havent they heard of RAID systems??). In any case, our site came back up for a few minutes and is back down again. Downtime since 10:30 or so is approaching 6 hours now!
So, I will no longer recommend HOSTWAY to anyone for any reason. The incredible wait times on the phone line are ridiculous and we have lost $$$ today due to this outage and associated loses from adwords, too.
Finally, it seems that Hostway's other problem is that they are trying to offer too many other kinds of services besides just hosting (which they used to be good at), and now they suck at their core basic service. That's my two cents.
Any recommendations for a replacement hosting service that is reliable and well known?
I think I pay about $50/3 months for Hostway.

Cheap Host With Good Customer Service
I am creating a basic static site for my friend's gardening business. It will use html and CSS only, be around 5MB at most and does not require any databases, php support etc. My problem is that he wants to basically have the site up and running and then be able to forget about it really. I will be going on now and again to update it for him, but that is about it. My experience with free hosts is limited, I have used byethost before, and though very good, they do require a log on every week else they assume the site is no longer wanted and delete the account and all files! So, my requirements are: Free host that easily allows to have your own domain name Email address with the company domain, so quotes@domain.com, not quotes@domain.host.com Cheap Good customer service Need no more than 20MB (allow for some extra photos to be added) UK Based would be preferable

Good Colocation Service Provider In Hong Kong
our company just decided to buy two servers in Hong Kong and colocate them there. Does anyone know a reputable hosting company (data center) in Hong Kong that offers colocation service? we hope the hosting company/data center can buy the servers for us - probably give us a few choices with different configurations and prices so we can pick two middle level servers. Is this something a typical data center/hosting company can help us with? up-time is not critical for our website, but we want a hosting company (data center) we can work with for many years, therfore it has to be a stable and reputable (maybe large) company/center.

Final Results - HostWay
This is a follow-up to my original thread [url] regarding my client's experiences with HostWay. I simply can't believe all of this, and I went through it. The low points of the whole thing work out like this: In order to set up an SSL for my client's site, we needed a dedicated IP. If you do a traceroute on my client's URL, it resolves to someone else all together. Int he mean time, I tried to purchase an SSL through HostWay, and when they didn't respond in a week and a half, I e-mailed cancelling the order, and purchased a (thankfully) inexpensive SSL from GoDaddy. I got an e-mail back within hours from HW saying, literally, "We never processed your SSL order, so there's nothing to cancel. Let us know if there's anythig else we can do." As I mentioned before, e-mail support seems to be handled off-shore, and it takes over a week for most answers. Phone support gets you, I found out, a service in Florida. While the people I dealt with on the phone were always professional and polite, they literally could do almost nothing. I was told several times, "I have to e-mail someone in Chicago - no, I don't know who it is, all I have is an e-mail address." Back to the SSL - seems HostWay already installed one on my client's site at some point - and it had nothing to do with my client. You could visit a secure version of the site, and it would tell you not to enter, as the cert didn't match the site. My client and I both were on the phone with the Florida 800 number for hours at a time. Average wait time to speak to someone was 30 minutes or so. I'm not carping about that part - but they were feeding us false information which was supposedly fed them from "Chicago." Specifically, I told them on the phone and via e-mail that the IP didn't resolve correctly, and that the old cert needed to be removed before a new one could go on (and only their SSL team can install certs, supposedly). They told my client that the GoDaddy cert was causing them problems, and that it needed to be cancelled before they could install one of their GeoTrust certs. I nuked it - even though I knew better - and of course nothing was done. They lied to my client for several days, saying the new cert was installed (even though I knew it wasn't, and I told my client so, and showed them HW's tech was passing on false information). This situation went on for almost two weeks. Finally, Monday night, my client got a supervisor based in British Columbia, Canada, who promised that he would walk "the tech admin" through fixing the problems that night. But that was only after my client threatened to pull his account. Well, the IP is still screwed up, but they replaced the cert that night with one for which they charged my client an arm and a leg. The CC processing company is happy, so we let it ride, and they're now processing payments over the web. If this is confusing, it's because I condensed many long days and nights into a few short paragraphs. Let's just say that HW didn't have their thinking caps on tight, because they committed to their preposterous stories to e-mails which we all received. Later this year, at a conference to be held in Canada, a committee of nuclear power station operators will be discussing whether or not they should keep HW as the host of their site. Gee, I wonder what the consensus will be.

Gate, Hostway, And KickAssVPS Experiences
I have used this forum a lot recently and just wanted to give back. I had my site hosted with gate.com for about 2 years which had been "OK". I wanted shared windows hosting with a real SQL Server account included and there weren't many options. Gate.com was only $10 at the time for a shared windows site with 100MB MS SQL included. Down time has been nowhere near 99.99%. Several times a year the the site was down for days at a time. I was nearing my 100MB SQL limit and noticed that SQL was no longer included with their new plans, so I started doing some research on this site. Right after that they migrated to new servers. Based on some domain names, setup screens... that I've seen recently, I believe that they were bought out by hostway.com. Since then, everything has been horrible. They moved my SQL database to a new server, but kept the old one with the old name visible on the web. Since you can't have 2 computers with the same name and they didn't tell me about the change, the new server had to keep the old name but I couldn't access it with that name. They never told me about this change and never gave me access to the new server. After calling, one tech support guy actually gave me a CNAME as the server name. Like I could access the server using a name ending in hostway. <- yes, not .com, just a dot at the end. The aliases that were pointed to my domain were redirected to some investment club. One tech guy tried to fix it by deleting the alias from my account and then re-adding it. The script he used to do this automatically charged my credit card for $10 for each alias and only worked for one of them. He said it was up to me to contact billing to fix this. Three weeks later, the alias that worked was broken again - pointing back to the investment club. Gate.com also had phone support (originally a plus), but hold times during this transition period could take an hour. Filling out a ticket took 3 weeks for a reply. I had already decided I wanted to try out a VPS because I had a couple more sites I wanted setup and I didn't want to get nickled and dimed for each one. Again, I wanted Windows Hosting with SQL Server included. Based on some reviews I read here I decided to go with KickAssVps.com. Their Plesk license includes 10 domains for free (I need 6), they have a free SQL Server 2005 1GB coupon (still available on this site until October 1st), and RAM was great at 960MB which I now realize is a lot more than I need. Have only had the site for a 9 days but so far I am happy. Registered the account late on a Saturday and it was setup by 11PM that night. Questions have been answered in a couple of hours. The KickAssVPS.com site doesn't have the greatest support, but you aren't using any custom tools from them. Help for Plesk, Virtuozzo, DNS setup, IIS... can all be found online and so far I haven't had much of a problem. I get about 8500 page-views a day and RAM is still under 300MB. Having SQL off server instead of using SQL Enterprise Express is great. Users of the site have commented that the site and chat both respond noticeably faster now. Remote Desktop is also very fast. Uploading about 1GB of images took a very long time, but not sure if that was on my end or the server. Sorry for the long rant. Just needed to release some aggression against my old provider.

Transitioning Today
Warning! This is a very positive--well, basically a rave--about my experience with a web hosting service today. Please, read no further if you only like to focus on the negative in life! After being with relio.com for about a year and a half, turns out I needed help transitioning some domains to a new account. And turns out, weberz.com is now who I have to contact for support because they bought relio. Turns out there were some things I just couldn't do for myself, and I ended up on the phone with Rob, the system admin today. Talk about great help! He stayed on the phone, patiently working through all of my issues until they were resolved. Afterwards I decided to poke through their support forums to learn more about a company that has this level/quality of service, and I was even more confident that I am with a good web hosting service that can grow with me over time.

Logwatch Broke Today
I logged into my email to check for my nightly logwatch report (at 12am). Nothing. So I log into ssh and manually run it, get greeted with this: You have old files in your logwatch tmpdir (/var/cache/logwatch): logwatch.zcTV3hC0 The directories listed above were most likely created by a logwatch run that failed to complete successfully. If so, you may delete these directories. I last ran logwatch around 10:30pm, it worked fine. I try to run logwatch again, same error.. except now there's another temp file showing beneath the first. I go ahead and delete both of them, run logwatch again...it worked. I also got the other reports from when I tried running logwatch manually and was stopped with this error. I've never had this happen before, so I'm curious as to what caused it? Logwatch is in cron.daily and has never missed a single report. Just typical data corruption (as can happen with any computer file) or could something have interfered with its processing at 12?

Used Apache Update/some PHP Scripts No Longer Working
Having some issues here, I used Apache Update to install WHMCS as I didn't have Curl installed. Well had some issues using the username and password as it couldn't connect to the database, my modernbill and phpnuke scripts still work but some other scripts like joomla, some shopping cart software, and other MYSQL scripts are not working. I've run test scripts to see if I can connect to the database, got the following error with the PHP test script Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Access denied for user 'data_invoice'@'localhost' (using password: YES) in /home/data/public_html/test2.php on line 4 I cannot connect to the database because:Access denied for user 'data_invoice'@'localhost' (using password: YES) Also attempted it in SSH and getting a similar error that access is denied. Username and password are correct. I believe I upgraded PHP which my guess is what caused this. I've searched the forum for a few solutions and I had the problem in the past which I fixed it, but it's been a while.

Do Not Use Hosting-Ie- Awful Service
I ordered a VPS from Hosting-IE on the 25th March and was initially told it would take 4 days or so to setup. A week later I emailed them, and was told by Max that it would be setup that day. Throughout the next week I emailed a few times and received no response at all, and got fed up so a few days ago I just filed a complaint with Paypal to try and get my money back (After waiting nearly 3 weeks for a VPS I think I should). Now Hosting-IE are saying to Paypal that they gave me the info, when this isn't true. So I just lost 60 euro's, not that much but still enough to get annoyed about. Gonna see if I can file a chargeback with my credit card company.. hopefully it should work. Anyway, definately stay away from Hosting-IE! I should have read up on them before I ordered..

Good Hosting With Domain Name?
There is too many web hostings from the google search and i don't know which one is good. My situation is i have a web page that is my portfolio. It is made by flash and php. Moreover, there is a blog too.(WordPress - php) Everything is ready but i am considering the web-hosting. What i need is support php and mysql. If possible, i would like it support ASP.net too. (i think it is not too possible for both of them) And i don't really need huge web space...i think 1G is enough and the traffic will not too much too as it is private website. Secure File Hosting Service
I don't know where to ask this question so hopefully I'm in the right forum. I have a friend that owns his own company and travels alot. He needs a place where he can store his work files (mostly document like word, excel, pdf, drawings, etc...) which contains very sensitive information. He need a place where he or the people in his team can transfer files and that he can setup access levels for his users. He need access to his files with a secure tool such as sftp or something else that you guys can recommend. Also, since some files can be very large he requires a good transfer speed from everywhere in the world. He's looking at around 100GB of storage space and a very high transfer allowance. He will probably need to host his website also. Do you guys think it's better to host the files and website separately?

Hostforweb Worst Hosting Service
I am an established web developer and a project manager in one of the TOP e-commerce company. Just giving you these details so that you can ACCOUNT and RELY on my review. I have signed up with Hostforweb.com on 26th April 2008 On weekends I work for my business (my own not the company's for which I work full time). Uploaded the few websites that were lying there for quite some time. On 29 th April the websites went down, for which I opened a ticket with hostforweb.com support and got a reply from them saying that "there was some mis configuration in the nodes which is rectified." Today all of the sudden they suspended the account and sent a message saying they got a message from "Bank of America" (because of phising activity) One of my business staff phoned me to my work place and informed about this and for which I was like "WHaTTTT" I am being in the online business since 1998 and never had a complaint from any of my previous hosting or present hosting providers other than this silly service. After reaching home from office (which is an 1hr 15minutes ago), I opened a ticket in their support section and the ticket was forwarded to account & billing department by level2 support person. There are diverse salespeople who sell my wife's artistic services and those of other photographers like her. They are looking to replace their currently self-hosted calendaring system with a hosted service. Can anyone here recommend one or a place for me to look? Hosting A Public Email Service
Currently we are running a very successful site for extreme sports. We have just spent 6 months on development of our new site which we will launch in a fortnight. This will free up some of my time to look at other areas and avenues to attract members. Personally I would love to run a hotmail style service on our website, and believe this would help with the growth of our online community. Just interested in advice from others on areas to be aware and alert when running a service like this? I am also trying to make the decision between SocketMail or Atmail. If anyone has opinions on these, or an alternative solution i'm all for that advice too. Basically at this point I am wanting to get as much advice together as possible, then look to making an informed decision to go ahead or not. Currently we operate off a dedicated server and i realise this may have to become two servers in the near future with such a service. Good Hosting Customer Support
It's imperative for you to know that web host features does not just stop with Unilimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth. There are other very salient features to which some people looking for a host provider have ignore, it is CUSTOMER SUPPORT. You will not value the importance of a good customer support until you start having problems which you want resolved in the shortest possible time. For some host providers this is like telling them to do the impossible. It is sad that some of the so-called reputable host don't even have a ticket system not to talk of an on-line chat system where you can ask questions and receive answers in real time. So, for those of you that are new to hosting or want to change your host, then you had better look for a host that offers good customer support either by Chat, ticket system or forum.
