Gate, Hostway, And KickAssVPS Experiences
Sep 23, 2008
I have used this forum a lot recently and just wanted to give back.
I had my site hosted with gate.com for about 2 years which had been "OK". I wanted shared windows hosting with a real SQL Server account included and there weren't many options. Gate.com was only $10 at the time for a shared windows site with 100MB MS SQL included. Down time has been nowhere near 99.99%. Several times a year the the site was down for days at a time. I was nearing my 100MB SQL limit and noticed that SQL was no longer included with their new plans, so I started doing some research on this site.
Right after that they migrated to new servers. Based on some domain names, setup screens... that I've seen recently, I believe that they were bought out by hostway.com. Since then, everything has been horrible.
They moved my SQL database to a new server, but kept the old one with the old name visible on the web. Since you can't have 2 computers with the same name and they didn't tell me about the change, the new server had to keep the old name but I couldn't access it with that name. They never told me about this change and never gave me access to the new server. After calling, one tech support guy actually gave me a CNAME as the server name. Like I could access the server using a name ending in hostway. <- yes, not .com, just a dot at the end.
The aliases that were pointed to my domain were redirected to some investment club. One tech guy tried to fix it by deleting the alias from my account and then re-adding it.
The script he used to do this automatically charged my credit card for $10 for each alias and only worked for one of them. He said it was up to me to contact billing to fix this. Three weeks later, the alias that worked was broken again - pointing back to the investment club.
Gate.com also had phone support (originally a plus), but hold times during this transition period could take an hour. Filling out a ticket took 3 weeks for a reply.
I had already decided I wanted to try out a VPS because I had a couple more sites I wanted setup and I didn't want to get nickled and dimed for each one. Again, I wanted Windows Hosting with SQL Server included. Based on some reviews I read here I decided to go with KickAssVps.com. Their Plesk license includes 10 domains for free (I need 6), they have a free SQL Server 2005 1GB coupon (still available on this site until October 1st), and RAM was great at 960MB which I now realize is a lot more than I need.
Have only had the site for a 9 days but so far I am happy. Registered the account late on a Saturday and it was setup by 11PM that night. Questions have been answered in a couple of hours. The KickAssVPS.com site doesn't have the greatest support, but you aren't using any custom tools from them. Help for Plesk, Virtuozzo, DNS setup, IIS... can all be found online and so far I haven't had much of a problem.
I get about 8500 page-views a day and RAM is still under 300MB. Having SQL off server instead of using SQL Enterprise Express is great. Users of the site have commented that the site and chat both respond noticeably faster now. Remote Desktop is also very fast.
Uploading about 1GB of images took a very long time, but not sure if that was on my end or the server.
Sorry for the long rant. Just needed to release some aggression against my old provider.

This is a follow-up to my original thread [url] regarding my client's experiences with HostWay.
I simply can't believe all of this, and I went through it.
The low points of the whole thing work out like this: In order to set up an SSL for my client's site, we needed a dedicated IP. If you do a traceroute on my client's URL, it resolves to someone else all together. Int he mean time, I tried to purchase an SSL through HostWay, and when they didn't respond in a week and a half, I e-mailed cancelling the order, and purchased a (thankfully) inexpensive SSL from GoDaddy. I got an e-mail back within hours from HW saying, literally, "We never processed your SSL order, so there's nothing to cancel. Let us know if there's anythig else we can do."
As I mentioned before, e-mail support seems to be handled off-shore, and it takes over a week for most answers. Phone support gets you, I found out, a service in Florida.
While the people I dealt with on the phone were always professional and polite, they literally could do almost nothing. I was told several times, "I have to e-mail someone in Chicago - no, I don't know who it is, all I have is an e-mail address."
Back to the SSL - seems HostWay already installed one on my client's site at some point - and it had nothing to do with my client. You could visit a secure version of the site, and it would tell you not to enter, as the cert didn't match the site.
My client and I both were on the phone with the Florida 800 number for hours at a time.
Average wait time to speak to someone was 30 minutes or so. I'm not carping about that part - but they were feeding us false information which was supposedly fed them from "Chicago." Specifically, I told them on the phone and via e-mail that the IP didn't resolve correctly, and that the old cert needed to be removed before a new one could go on (and only their SSL team can install certs, supposedly).
They told my client that the GoDaddy cert was causing them problems, and that it needed to be cancelled before they could install one of their GeoTrust certs. I nuked it - even though I knew better - and of course nothing was done. They lied to my client for several days, saying the new cert was installed (even though I knew it wasn't, and I told my client so, and showed them HW's tech was passing on false information).
This situation went on for almost two weeks. Finally, Monday night, my client got a supervisor based in British Columbia, Canada, who promised that he would walk "the tech admin" through fixing the problems that night. But that was only after my client threatened to pull his account.
Well, the IP is still screwed up, but they replaced the cert that night with one for which they charged my client an arm and a leg. The CC processing company is happy, so we let it ride, and they're now processing payments over the web.
If this is confusing, it's because I condensed many long days and nights into a few short paragraphs. Let's just say that HW didn't have their thinking caps on tight, because they committed to their preposterous stories to e-mails which we all received.
Later this year, at a conference to be held in Canada, a committee of nuclear power station operators will be discussing whether or not they should keep HW as the host of their site. Gee, I wonder what the consensus will be.

I switched to kickassvps.com yesterday. I switched from Zone.net due to down time and other issues. I places my order on their site and had my vps up and running in about 15 mins. Also note that all this happened on a SATURDAY! These guys so far have been very helpful and the VPS is fast. They also offer double the memory of my previous host at the same price!
I would recommended kickassvps.com to anyone looking for a entry level to advanced level vps.
Fast setup/affordable/good customer service

here is my experience with Gate.com
I went to their website to order a VPS. They had a special offer on the Linux server, and I asked a sales rep via the telephone if that offer could also apply to the Windows VPS and I could just add the difference. She told me yes, and that I should order the VPS, and then call their support line and have them add windows to it once it is up.
Well the site was confirmed after hours, but they have an 866 number up at the top, so I called that.
Their technical support girl answered, and she said that she couldn't add windows to it, because it was a special. I explained the situation to her and she said call back on Monday (this was Friday).
So then I notice two charges on my credit card, one for 19.95 (the sale price, it was 1st month free, and i just had to pay setup fee) and one for 15.00
So when I checked into it Monday they said that they said that the 15$ charge was for their "technical support call" when I was told technical support was free for the servers. Then I asked about having it changed to windows and they said they could NOT add windows to it, that I'd have to pay regular price. I said well that's not a big deal, I didn't mind. But they would not refund the setup if I placed a new order, so I would be out the $20.00 on that, even after I explained to them the situation. Then they finally refunded the $15.00 technical support fee, and I closed my account. In the end, I'm out 19.95 and waiting for the $15.00 to come back, not a big loss for the knowledge but, a loss none the less.

I used to recommend Hostway.com to other companies, as they host our eCommerce site as a shared hosting site and their uptime and customer service were very good.
But, NEVER AGAIN. Today, they have been down ALL DAY since around 10:30 am (they would not give me the exact time) and so has our business site! I called twice and the wait time the first time for a tech support person was over 1 hour! IN-FRIGGING-CREDIBLE! The 2nd call a few hours later was at least a 45 minute wait.
The answer I got was that they had a hard drive crash and my site is unlucky enough to live on that drive. Understandable, but their explanation that it takes ALL DAY to restore a hard drive from tape is incredible (or havent they heard of RAID systems??). In any case, our site came back up for a few minutes and is back down again. Downtime since 10:30 or so is approaching 6 hours now!
So, I will no longer recommend HOSTWAY to anyone for any reason. The incredible wait times on the phone line are ridiculous and we have lost $$$ today due to this outage and associated loses from adwords, too.
Finally, it seems that Hostway's other problem is that they are trying to offer too many other kinds of services besides just hosting (which they used to be good at), and now they suck at their core basic service. That's my two cents.
Any recommendations for a replacement hosting service that is reliable and well known?
I think I pay about $50/3 months for Hostway.

Signed up and paid the first month for a 'Linux Entry' + 1 GB mySQL around 4:45PM today. It's now 11:21PM and I have not heard anything or received any Emails for remote access. Does it usually take this long?
Reading thru this site they seemed to be one of the best if your on a $30/month budget.
Maybe setting up the Linux stuff takes longer for them than Windows?

just thought i would post my experience with gate.com. i ordered their biggest vps plan, with 512mb or memory. i was pleasantly suprised when i logged in and found they had actually given me 1GB. the problems started when i went to login to plesk, they had not installed it, but they fixed that quickly. (although tech support for anything other than this would cost $15 per incident) the biggest problem with them is it appears that they oversell the lines to the dedicated servers, and for much of the time, it takes a VERY long time to load pages, if they even load at all. i cancelled my account though, without any of the problems i have heard they have with cancellations.

I noticed the lack of KickassVPS reviews, so I decided to try them out (they were nice enough to give me a free trial). The short time I was with them was surprisingly very good.
I didn't notice any downtime at all and the server was very fast, which was pleasing.
They didn't seem to have any trouble in that department (10/10 for uptime and speed).
I contacted support a total of 2 times; the first reply came 8 hours later but they went above and beyond what I asked. I asked for PHP + MySQL installed and they also installed PHPMyAdmin and provided me a test file to prove that they were all truly installed. My previous hosts didn't do this. I sent a request to install Ruby on Rails which was responded to in 9 hours, informing me that although they were new to Ruby on Rails, they would still install it and they wanted to confirm if I was ok with it. That's around when my trial ended. I'd give support a 8/10. It would be perfect if they responded in a more timely manner, but support was very, VERY friendly, helpful and professional. Keep in mind that I contacted support on Labor Day, so they might have been busy that day but still found time to respond to my support inquiries.
Overall, even though the support requests were a bit slow, I'd keep KickassVPS in mind when looking for a reliable Windows VPS provider. Personally, I think they live up to their name for those who aren't in a hurry or who can manage their own Windows servers. Although my trial was only for a week, from my experience I can say these guys seem to be trustworthy. Your server probably won't go down the minute you receive it and support won't leave you hanging for a prolonged period of time. These guys have been added to my list of good VPS providers whom I consider when buying a VPS.
Just in case you didn't know, their website is kickassvps.com

According to the reviews on the Forum. Most of you won't trust an important client/application to a VPSLand VPS.
So I was wondering if you would trust a critical application to KickassVPS?
Why my question?
I am evaluating to consolidate 2 VPSLand based VPS into 1... the load is not so high and KickassVPS seems to provide more features for the buck... not to mention Plesk and Smarterstats...

They are sure running some great specials right now but sometimes things aren't as good as they seem. Any experiences from people especially on their management services & such from users who have had them (or used to have them) for some period of time (not brand new or short-time users--- unless the short time was due to very bad experiences from the start).
And please-no "secret reps" telling me how great you are, would like some actual user experiences. Have been very happy with the same provider for over 6 years but their pricing is not reflecting the current trends in server technology & I'm growing tired of "negotiating" (old tech at new tech prices) so I've been looking for some options for the first time in years.
High-end users preferred (quads-dual quads etc.) but mainly want to know if they live up to their management & security promises (response times SLA, tech knowledge, etc. for "fully managed".

A few month ago I needed some Windows VPS server and checked out WHT.
Apparently some folks recommended VPSLand and I thought it would be a good choice. Well after a few weeks with them I decided to move to another firm, because their Support is worse then I have ever seen with any hosting company.
It takes days to get an answer and in one occasion i even had to cancel the server since they couldn't get it to work again
Then yesterday one server went offline and after waiting a half day on support I received an email telling me that the server was online since months.
Then the hit today was that they just shut down one of the server cause he would use to much CPU
The thing which puzzles me is that they shut it down without notice and have me, the client, figuring out why i can't login
Long story short. I will move all my server to another company and can only recommend you to stay away from those guys.

I'm a longtime lurker and finally decided to register today. This place has been great for hosting info., etc.
I've been piggybacking on a friend's Mosso hosting account for about six months. That is, I pay a % of the $100 full-account price, as I haven't needed the full allotment of space, bandwidth, etc.
While I like Mosso and especially the simple control panel, etc., it seems like they've had a tough run of stability problems lately. Other than a couple instances of my site taking a few seconds to load, I haven't been impacted myself (that I can tell).
HOWEVER, I've noticed Mosso very recently has changed the format of their Status blog by eliminating the archives and only showing the latest post or two. This tells me Mosso is concerned with the number and length of outages they've had lately, as it's no longer possible to review recent downtime issues as it was for most of the past few years. (I was watching Mosso long before switching to their hosting.)
Further, maybe I'm just paranoid, and it seems like others would be complaining if it's true, but lately I've suspected some email is going AWOL. There have been several instances lately when I've checked my email after a day or two and noticed 10- and 12-hour gaps with no emails (not even spam). I've also had weird stretches where I've sent emails to a dozen people but only received replies from half of them. (These are friends and business associates; people from whom I'd expect a 95% reply rate.)
After a lot of comments, and especially complaints, on this board over the past couple years, it seems like Mosso rarely comes up here anymore, which seems like it should be a good thing. I'm curious if others here have had recent experience with Mosso and, if so, if they've had any problems.

About 1GB of space and maybe 10-20gb of bandwidth. It will mostly be for photography but later on in the year I will have to host some songs and approx 50 people will be downloading 10 songs each.

I am specifically interested in hearing from people who have direct experience with them, not just "I've heard they're really good". Have you experienced many outages and how is support for you?
Please also mention whether you have used / are using their managed or unmanaged option.
