Hosting Account Management Tool
Feb 6, 2008
What do you use to manage all of your hosted accounts?
We have 2 servers, and about 95 clients. We bill our clients yearly. I cant seem to rely on plesk or cpanel for billing renewal dates, owner, etc.
IS there a program out there to help me see what account is due when, etc? Also who the owner is.
Ideally, Id love it o track by server, or view all, as well as show expiration notifications.
We are just to the point where managing these on excel is getting messy.

good remote management solution.
As the Intel vPro chip set looks very nice and has all this, what we need (remote power management, hardware analysis/informations, kvm, etc) we bought one main board with that chip set.
We had now the problem to find a software which has a good support for the Intel vPro chip set. We found and tried:
Intel AMT Developer Kit
LANDesk
Microsoft System Configuration Manager 2007
SyAM Software
The onliest software, which was install able and connect able at the moment, was the Intel AMT Developer Kit. Software like LANDesk and MS SysConfigMgr needs Windows Server Versions with and without Windows Domain. We succeeded (after fixing the requirements of each software) to install everything, but no software is able to connect to the vPro chip. Only the Intel AMT Developer Kit does.
The Intel AMT Developer Kit looks on the first look enough anf powerful. We can power on, off, reset, we see hardware informations, we can enter also the bios over remote console. But as soon as we want to start remotely a cd, for example simple memtest86 image, it doesn't gives any display.
Does someone of you has good experience in this system?
Has someone some suggestions, what software else is existing?
We want to manage linux/unix based and windows as well.
With manage we mean, to install and to maintain.
If here is some company, which can help us, also if it costs some money, we would be glad to get in touch.

I'm finally ready to move from a shared environment to a dedicated server. I don't know anything about server set up and management. Therefore I'm looking for a managed solution.
Reading through this great forum I found out that I can either go with a fully managed solution by the hosting company or go with an self-managed host and hire a third party administrator.
This will be my first dedicated server project. I would like to keep monthly cost below $400. Not necessarily looking for the cheapest deal out there, but rather for good service and stable performance.
I have heard good things about the Planet and liquidweb here on this forum. If I can find a reliable 3rd party management company I might be able to look into softlayer and/limestone.
I'm trying to decide whether I should go with inhouse management or 3rd party management.

I have about 5 sites all hosted on my same hosting account. One of those domains is attached to the hosting account. I place my other domains in a folder of a sub-directory of my main domain. This has been working fine, up until today when i noticed a weird error. I give you a little example of how my sites are setup
my main domain:
www.maindomain.com
My other sites hosted in a sub-directory of my main domain:
www.maindomain.com/sites/site2/
www.maindomain.com/sites/site3/
How my other sites appear on the web:
www.site2.com
www.site3.com
This works fine for every page until i go to www.site2.com/index.php
It redirects to www.maindomain.com/sites/site2/index.php for some reason

I can find lots of info on getting started on designing a web site but not much on getting started on publishing/managing the site.
I have been bumbling through trial and error for several years now. I was on infinology with hsphere for awhile. I am now on hostgator with cpanel 10. (Shared-babycroc)
I would like the equivalent of a dummies book that addresses all those pre-made directories and files that come with an account, discussions on permissions, password protecting directories, hotlinking, email account management, add-on domains, subdomains, etc.
I would really like a basic overview so that I could have a better chance of understanding the forum discussions and help sites I do find.

I am trying to determine the best design approach for this business need.
There are multiple URLs:
[url]
[url]
[url]
The URLs are going to be specific to a topic but the displaying of the pages is template based. For example, there is 1 JSP page that will display the content for a topic based on an ID.
[url]is ID 1 in my database table.
[url]is ID 2 in my database table.
[url]is ID 3 in my database table.
So I could do a form post to display the specific content for a topic.
Code:
<form name="frmTopic" action=”/topic” method="Post">
<input type="hidden" name="topicID" id="topicID" value="">
</form>
So by populating the topicID and posting this form, it directs to my JSP page and displays the content specific to the topic ID. So if I pass 1, content about cats is displayed. If I pass 2, dogs and 3, birds.
I want to keep the URLs specific to the topic but I do not want to pay for hosting for each site since the only difference from one site to another is 1 page. The 1 page is the page that tells the JSP page which topic to display (I realize I have to hard code the ID number after I add the topic to the database).
Here is my question.
Is there a way I can have a specific index.htm page for each site [url]with one hosting account (I am using GoDaddy)? Then I could have this page redirect to the template JSP passing the ID. I could then put very specific items about the topic on this page to hopefully improve its page rank in search engines.
If this is not possible, I could create an initial JSP page that checks the ServerVariable for the specific URL and then passes the ID… something like this:
Request.ServerVariables("SERVER_NAME")
I am looking for feedback on the best approach so if there is an option that I have not listed that is better, please let me know.

i am about to take on a big account where i will be hosting-developing-designing and doing analysis. im not sure if i should get my own server or transfer this new account to my hosting company (host monster).
im afraid if my server goes down i will not have the experience to rectify it in a rapid speed. is it ok to keep a big account that relies on web traffic and business with a host like host monster and what are the pro"s and con's. i have only done web design and development thus far and the hosting and maintenance is pretty new to me.

I'm trying to understand how nameservers work. Here is what I would like to do. I'd like to have one nameserver point to my main hosting account and the second one point to another hosting account that I will call my back up host. Is that a proper use of the two nameservers or is that not a good idea for some reason?

I have a question about SSL certs.
How do you transfer an SSL cert that you have on your current hosting plan to new servers hosting plan?
This is on Plesk and on a VPS and I have root access on both servers and both are Plesk if this even makes a difference.

I'm reeling right now after my shared hosting has been down for more than 24 hours (and this isn't one of the super-cheapies, it's in the $20-$30/month range)
In the future I'd really like to be protected against this kind of outage... I know downtime is inevitable with any host, so I'm wondering if it's possible to have some kind of failover system. Maybe I could get a second account with a bargain basement host (<$10/month) and keep it relatively up to date with a mirror of my site. But I don't know how I could manage the DNS so it went to the second host in the even of a failure on the first....
Does this kind of redundancy exist as some product in the industry that I don't know about (is that what "colocation" is?)? Is it likely that my host has the ability/willingness to redirect my domain (302 or something) in times of trouble like this?

I currently use a HostGator shared plan which caps off database connections at 25. HG support said my only choice is to move to a dedicated server which means my monthly hosting cost jumps from $14.95 to $174.00! Something I'm not too excited about paying.
Can anyone offer any suggestions on Virtual Private Servers running *nix? Would a VPS be a good alternative to an expensive HG dedicated server or do you recommend I just suck it up and go dedicated? I just can't believe how much they want considering I've seen some VPS for under $100. If I did go with a VPS, would there be an easy way to move all my files, databases, SSL certs, etc to the new server?

I have several domain names and I pay for hosting for each domain name. Each domain name gets little traffic, uses little bandwidth, and little storage space. I would like to pay for hosting once and share the bandwidth and storage space amongst the multiple sites. Do you know of a hosting company that offers this? I suppose it would involve having one hosting account and multiple IP addresses that resolve to different folders in your account?

This is one of my thoughts and a valid one based on my own experience.
One of the problems with shared hosting account that comes with multiple domain/web hosting, is that all the hosted domains shared one single cpanel and one root directory where all the addon domains directories and files are all jammed up together with the maindomain's directories and files.
Notably is some php scripted sites running on addon domains were unable to function effectively. One such example is using imagevue - a photo slideshow/gallery script. The problem of no photos or photos unable to load/show when the site is called directly from the addon domain [url]
However, when accessed through the maindomain [url] it has no such problem and the photos showed up.
With the above incident and having tried on three other different webhosts, it's clear that something has to be done or otherwise, having multiple domain hosting has no real benefits if you consider the above matters.
As such, the only solution I can think of is to install whm on our shared hosting account so that we can have each added domain to have its own independent cpanel.
So long as we are not doing any reselling activities, there is no reason for the webhost to object or refused.
If your webhost is genuinely care about you and truly to provide an enhanced and efficient webhosting experience, then whm is one way to overcome any shortcomings from existing facility of using a single cpanel for all your multiple addon domains.
Of course, another alternative is to use subdomains from the main domain and redirect all your addon domain sites to the subdomains. That would really defeat the purpose of having addon domains in the first place. Also, why should we? since the hosting account is for multiple domain hosting.
Webhosts offering so-called unlimited domain hosting or limited multiple domain hosting on a single cpanel, should review the existing known issues such as the one mentioned above, and consider using whm to overcome such issues, thus truly provide a pleasant and effective multiple domain web hosting experience to its customers.
Webhosts should tweak and enhance its existing features/softwares/hardwares to improve the overall webhosting services.

I know this question has been asked before but I tried the solutions I could find on net but not total success.
So, I have a shared hosting a/c with a domain(say www.xyz.com) pointing to it ..
Now I want a second domain (www.secondsite.com) to point to www.xyz.com/secondsitefolder
There was this article that says to use 'ZoneEdit' [url]how-to-...ting-aaccount/
And it works but the problem is when someone types www.secondsite.com in the browser, the browser url changes to www.xyz.com/secondsitefolder
Is there someway to stop tht browser url change or what's the correct way to have 2 domain names point to one shared hosting a/c.

As a domainer I have several domainnames I like to add to a hostingaccount.
Many of the domains will have a blog or minisite.
At this moment I have a shared hosting account with unlimited domains.
But for seo reasons it is better not to link the domains/urls to eachother cause they have the same IP.
What can you recommend me to have all the domains on different IP's?
Or is there another way to do this,I heard something about c-class....
If I have to put the domains on different IP's on my shared hosting account I will have to pay $2,50 for an IP per month, this will be quite expensive.

For years we have been able to send and receive through our web sites using Qwest and then a few weeks ago it stopped working for sending completely. I checked the usual things like port 25; I changed the outbound mail address to smtp.live.com per their instructions. Nothing. Now that Qwest is MSN it just doesn't work and their offshore "support" is worthless. This happens using Windows XP Pro and Vista.
