I'm trying to understand how nameservers work. Here is what I would like to do. I'd like to have one nameserver point to my main hosting account and the second one point to another hosting account that I will call my back up host. Is that a proper use of the two nameservers or is that not a good idea for some reason?
I changed my nameservers from my last domain, I deleted all the dns entries etc... and updated my hostname etc... But, when I go to create a new cpanel account, it still shows up with my own nameservers and making it with my old nameservers.
I tried going to /etc/nameserverips and they were the new nameservers. Im not sure how to fix this, any ideas?
I just got a VPS plan for the first time where I want to host several new websites. In the past I've used individual accounts to host a couple of other websites and haven't paid much attention to nameserver setup, just configured at my registrar whatever I was given from the hosting service.
So, I got a brand new domain to act as the host of the rest of the domains I'm setting up: www.example.com.
In the VPS I have setup this one as the default domain for nameservers: ns1.example.com ns2.example.com
Question 1: - Can I setup ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com as the nameserververs for www.example.com ? i.e. nameserver is used for the same domain in which it is named. Even if this is possible, is it a good idea or would it be better to host it somewhere else? When I try to define those as the nameservers in Godaddy I get the error message Nameserver not registered. What am I missing?
Other DNS questions Question 2: - If I host my nameservers in my VPS, I will need a separate IP for each one (ns1, ns2...and so on). Can I still use those IP's to actually host websites, or do I need additional IP's to host the actual sites? Any value in keeping each IP dedicated to a nameserver?
For example: IP#1 = used for ns1 IP#2 = used for ns2 IP#1 = used for website 1 IP#2 = used for website 2
Question 3: - Are DNS backup services valuable if I host my own nameservers? Any suggestions on good quality providers? Price not an issue.
Question 4: - If I used DNS backup services for example.com will that apply to ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com which I used for my VPS? and therefore will be applicable to other domains I host? Does this make sense? Or would I need a separate backup for each domain I host? Can I use one backup for multiple domains?
Question 5: - What are the drawbacks of hosting multiple sites under the same IP? I control all sites under these IPs
Question 6: - Can somebody recommend a good resource to learn how IP, DNS, nameservers, etc work? Any book, paid website, video... anything ? While there's a ton of info on the web, all is scattered and none seems to be too detailed enough for somebody starting to learn about this.
i have just bought a godaddy domain and some others on dotster etc....
I have lots of hosting on another of my domain like example . com Now the domains i bought before had like example2 . com /index.html
but i only see the option to direct it as a frame or full redirect to my hosting.... so i would have to use like site.example.com for it.
I was wondering if i had to buy hosting for this domain so I get example2 . com/ or whether its possible using DNS? Nameserver? or something ( i dont really know what they are) so I can use site.example.com hosting(eg. site.example.com/index.html but it says example2 . com/index.html....
Just like you hear of these people who buy hundreds of domains and put landing pages...do they have individual hosting for each one?
I have a website and I wanted to have custom nameservers for it. Such as www.example.com when you whois it'll be like ns1.example.com, etc. Is this possible on shared hosting or do I need to upgrade to VPS?
I am developing a site for a new company that will run under a medical engineering firm. I'm currently the only employee and am setting up websites and graphics for the company, but working out of the same office as everyone else. We currently have a VPS through iPower to host our site on, and everything is dandy. However we only own one IP address on the VPS, and I want to be in charge of my secondary nameserver, as I will also eventually use it as a secondary MX server. I have never done this before so I have a few questions about it. My previous experience has all been graphic design and web design, not much on the hosting side of things.
1.Is it possible to run a server on a XP desktop just using Apache or similar software (and a dynamic DNS service)?
2. Would it be possible to run this through the company LAN and router to make it accessible via the web without any serious tinkering on their network? (it has to stay up, and I have no idea what kind of routers or firewalls they are using currently). Basically given the standard setup how hard is it to open up the ports on the router(s)? I've done this only on a home router before, so I assume it can't be much different.
could any one has for example 3 hosting accounts each one in a ddifferent hosting company , could it be possible to put all Name Servers of 3 different hosting sites under one domain name ?
Will the nameservers work if the nameservers are pointed to a parking page? For example:
I need to change my nameservers to ns1.mywebhost.com and ns2.mywebhost.com
(nameservers are made up)
These nameservers are from my web hosting service provider. When I visit the nameservers, it shows up a parking page from a domain parking service (let's say NameDrive parking page)
Will the nameservers function correctly and will my websites work? I have this question because usually the nameservers that I use, they always point to a CP page or something like that rather than a parking page.
Actually I make backup in 1 ftp account, also I have another ftp account what I don't use it. Do you know how to copy files directly from 1 ftp account to another one?
1 ftp account it's with bqbackup.com 1 ftp account it's with another backup provider
any of them have ssh access, so I'm looking to something like copy-at-the-fly ftp? without downloading all first to another server?
i have a cpanel server. due to some problems , one of my customers asks me to terminate his account and create it again WITH NEW DOMAIN NAME and restore old backup in this new account. how can i restore old backup in this new account that they have different domain names and usernames!
I have about 5 sites all hosted on my same hosting account. One of those domains is attached to the hosting account. I place my other domains in a folder of a sub-directory of my main domain. This has been working fine, up until today when i noticed a weird error. I give you a little example of how my sites are setup
my main domain: www.maindomain.com
My other sites hosted in a sub-directory of my main domain: www.maindomain.com/sites/site2/ www.maindomain.com/sites/site3/
How my other sites appear on the web: www.site2.com www.site3.com
This works fine for every page until i go to www.site2.com/index.php It redirects to www.maindomain.com/sites/site2/index.php for some reason
The one thing that currently annoys me is that when an account is terminated from one of our servers, the account is still left on the backup drive.
Is there any way to automatically remove the accounts files from the backup drive when terminating an account? Or do I have to continue to do it manually?
I am moving hosts and my old host is unable to backup my current site and give me a single tar or zip file of my websites (They do not use cpannel)
The only access I have to them is var ftp and there custom control pannel, I have been backuing up.
My new cpanel host has given me SHH access and I was trying to run a ftpsync a perl based script to sync a site but it times out "421 No Transfer Timeout (900 seconds)"
At the moment I am backing up the site to my local pc but it has been running for the last 12 hours, All the sites only total about 350mb but they are made up of lots of small files and I think that this is the reason why it is taking so long.
I wanted to know if any one had any other ideas as I am a little bit worried that I might lose some data that is why I would like to some how backup my old host direct to my new host.
Using online backup service, it is possible if we are root or we have a vps or server to keep an exact replica of our site that we can fire off in the event of downtime happened.
Is there a solution where we can keep an exact backup (a mirror) using a reseller account even without root?
(without downloading the files of all the sub account to our own pc of course)
I have a dedicated server with SSH ability and I need to backup some of the accounts of the server via rsync to a normal shared account where I only have ftp access..?
