Game Servers - Linux Vs Windows
Aug 2, 2008
This question, and many questions relating to this I am sure must have reasoning behind it. It basicly relates down to the following;
Why do game servers use up more CPU on Linux, opposed to Windows?
Some people say it doesnt, and that is true for some games, but most games I have found, the CPU usage of the game on a Linux based server is far higher.
Just as an example, most Steam games.
I really would like to know why, and how it could be reduced. What are some things I can install, or configure to make game servers run more smoothly or use less CPU on Linux?
If anyone has any ideas & thoughts related to this, please let me/us know, for im sure this is beneficial to all.
Just to add in, I use CentOS 4.6 Final.

Personally I would never follow this route (hosting gameserver(s) on a VPS), but maybe some people on these forums do and I'm quite interested in what these people run (game+slots), on what hardware/OS, at which host and their opinion about the performance of it.

Alright, I have been running game servers for about 8 months now, but I am having some issues with a new box I just ordered in Ny. I only have 1 server on it, which is a CS 1.6 server and it is getting HORRIBLE FPS. Now usually when I put a new server on a box it always gets constant fps, so if I set it to 500 it will pretty much stay at 500, this has been the case on 10+ boxes I have. This one is getting from about 100-300 with a few spikes to 500. Now as far as running the game server, I know what I am doing, however this must me an issue with the server.
It is a Dual Opteron 252 with 2gb's of ram.(Plenty to run a high fps server)
The only thing I can think of is maybe the timer set in the linux kernel is too low. If so how would I change this (Never done it before)
Anyone else have similar problems? Any ideas what could be the problem?

I'm planning host multiple game servers on a single machine. I'm going to configure my own machine for this purpose. I'm uncertain on how powerful should I build my machine.
I'm going to host resource demanding games like Battlefield 2 and Armed Assault. Both of the mentioned games has a dedicated server application that requires roughly 2ghz of CPU power and 1GB to 2GB of RAM (depending on connected users) to run on.
Base on the above requirements, I'm going to put together a machine with 2 dual core Opteron or Xeon running at 2ghz and 8GB of RAM. The machine is going run 4 virtual servers with the game server application running on them. My configuration uses basic division to calculated the required CPU and RAM on my custom configured machine. Is this a practical approach?
Has anyone tried anything similar with xen? I'm worry about any performance impact that might happen due to overhead or shared cpu & ram cycle latency as game server demands real time performance.
I'm though about doing this because it's cheaper to rent a 1U rack space running 4 game servers than renting 4Us for the same purpose. Care to share experience or thoughts on this subject?

I just got a new box, and I installed a game server on it ( Take in mind it is windows ) and when you type status in console it says STEAMID PENDING on all users.
I have restarted the game servers, and that didnt work. I rebooted the box, but that worked. When i went in game and typed status it said the SteamID's of the user, but when i restarted the game server it went back to "SteamID PENDING".
Can any one help me out why it is doing this?

I have been a user of sitepoint for quite a while now. I am developing software applications at present and keep bumping my head into the same old question.
Which is better, Linux or Windows servers. (Probably a question which depends on what they are used for of course.) In this case, they would be used to store a database for the application and therefore communicate with it etc.
The choice is, do I develop the application in .net and use windows or do I go down the PHP route and use Linux.
This is the options that have been explained to me, of course I am not a developer myself so am just hearing the advice I am told.

Currently I am hosting a server for a particular video game from my home with a large amount of bandwidth using FreeBSD 7.2 and VirtualBox. Everything works perfectly, but I'm looking into a new domain and a professional hosting solution in order to improve the overall experience for my users. I'm a college student (graduate, robotics) and therefore I'm on a tight budget.
I've generated a usermap using a GeoIP database that shows the span of my userbase.
In short, most of my users are from America and northern Europe.
tinyurl dot com/ygl3fvp
The virtual machine I use currently uses 192 MB of virtual RAM. Although the hard drive uses over 6GB, most of that is taken up by the operating system itself (Windows XP MCE) -I can fit my daemon into 2GB. Using Linux or FreeBSD is not an option unfortunately. I do not require high reliability, but I cannot afford to be locked into a contract. If possible, I'd like to get a VPS host with a low introductory cost so that I can determine whether my needs will be met with as little cost.
After checking around for low-cost VPS hosts that fit these criteria, the three most likely candidates seem to be:
- 24shells.net - $18 a month
- Pandela - $24 a month
- Kickass VPS - $35 a month

Without any fanfare, at the beginning of September, Parallels released Virtuozzo Containers (formerly Virtuozzo) 4.5.
Version 4, launched in January, unified for the first time the Windows and Linux branches, introducing major new features like virtual SMP masking and support for Microsoft and Red Hat cluster services.
Version 4.5, which is built on this new architecture, brings in a wire range of new capabilities:
Enhanced resource management (CPU pools, vCPUs remapping on logical CPUs, offline vHD fragmentation)
Containers cloning
Containers startup order
Support for Windows Server 2008 (32/64bit, with or without Hyper-V, up to Service Pack 1) and its new Failover Clustering
Support for Hyper-V (it’s not exactly clear if this just means that the Hyper-V parent partition can be segmented in containers, or something else)
Support for TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) NICs inside the containers
Support for new 3rd party backup and anti-virus solutions (including the ones provided by AVG, CA, EMC, IBM, McAfee, Symantec and F-Secure)
Support for iSCSI inside the containers (a container can be an Initiator)
Support for IPv6 addresses inside the containers
It’s not entirely clear why Parallels didn’t promote in any way what is still considered its flagship product.
It is true that the large majority of the attention is focused on hardware virtualization, but the company OS virtualization platform should still have a competitive advantage over VMware, Citrix and Microsoft hypervisors in the hosting industry, which is well worth some more marketing effort.
We are wondering why Parallels haven't been shouting from the rooftops. This is a game changer.

I'm rather new to Windows dedicated servers and would like to know which Anti Virus to use for a Windows dedicated server?
What other security measures do I need to take on the windows server as well?
Been hosting with Linux servers for years, one would almost expect that a security on a Windows server is "second nature", but I have some doubts about the security of these servers. We'll be using Windows 2003 standard & Windows 2003 Web edition.

I have tried copy files from Linux server to Windows Server using WinSCP3 and it was so fast.
I am not sure who to copy files as well from Windows to Windows with same speed. I tried to use RDC between the Windows Servers and share one drive. But it wasn't fast as WinSCP3.

The minimum requirements that I am seeking for is that it must be a Windows 2000 or Windows XP machine with at least 1024 MB of DDR PC3200 RAM and at least a single-core 2 GHz CPU whether it be AMD or Intel (something suitable for a gameserver and webserver combo), 40GB SATA/RAID Harddrive, and a Full Duplex 100 Mbit port with plenty of bandwidth to run a 32-Player 66tic CSS Server.
The price range that I seek is between $60 to $120 per month.
