I am developing a website for a client, whose web host is BT Business Broadband. I had noticed that the FTP connection to their server was a but slow, and the http connection was not as fast as my reseller account here. I also noticed something else funny....
I have simple PHP script that greets users according to the time of day. It was saying Good Morning, when it is the afternoon. To test, I uploaded another script to output the current time of the server. It was 5 hours out!
I contacted BT to ask them why the time was wrong, and they said that it's because the server is not located in the UK, the company that manages the server is located in Canada!
Frankly I am dissapointed with BT and feel slightly ripped off on behalf of the client.
They pay them enough money to expect a fast service, and to have the server located in the same country, let alone the same continent! This also will affect their search engine results, as it is hosted on a foreign IP address.
I am looking for a hosting company based in Canada (preferably) or who has it's servers based in Canada, not in the U.S., who offers both shared hosting as well as dedicated hosting for easy upgrade. The only requirement that I need is the possibility to have SSH access. Could you recommend me a company that has a few years history? I am looking for a long-term host for an important project.
What DC's would people recommend in Canada/North US? We've already got Texas, LA and Atlanta so want something more northley. I've got Iweb on my list, Liquidweb as a maybe as well
I have a web hosting business that has been growing constantly for a couple of years, now I think it's time to move on and instead of leasing servers start with colocation and operating my own hardware, I'm in Mexico and there are no good deals here as there are in other countries, so I have several questions about your appreciation of where things are better for business, US or Canada:
Where is colo cheaper? Where is hardware cheaper? Where is personnel less costly? Where is personnel better qualified? Where is office space cheaper? Where is electrical energy cheaper? Where are more investment opportunities? Where are taxes lower? Where is living less costly?
I've been researching these on my own but still have several doubts, may be you find some of this question obvious however I'd still like to know your appreciation.
I'm about at my end of dealing with Toronto providers but before we pull the plug on our T.O location, I figured I'd request a couple more recommendations.www.servertag.com - Used them in the past and had some issues with downtime / response times. Would rather not use them again.www.upscalehost.com - Amazing Toronto host but they're killing us by charging 95th percentile.
We're after a standard dedicated box (not celeron) with 1500-2000GB monthly limit. Know of a company? Maybe a neighbour with a rack in 151?
We have a need for a 1/4 or 1/2 rack of space somewhere in the Lower Mainland of BC, ideally in Vancouver but will consider other locations. Needs are pretty basic: 10-20RU of space, 1 20A power circuit, a single 100Mbps network drop, ~200GB of transfer.
I have been happy at site5. Due to the Patriot Act, the stricter Canadian PIPEDA law, and my Canadian residency, I am looking for a comparable Canadian host.
I have a number of domains. My research has not revealed any Canadian hosts that offer something comparable to the convenience of Site5's MultiSite. Looks like to operate multiple domains under a single account in Canada the administration is via subdomains or domain pointers rather than what MultiSite does. Is anyone aware of a Canadian host that offers MultiSite like functionality.
The company and all of its hardware must be in Canada so the data does not become subject to the laws of other jurisdictions.
I'm rather new to Windows dedicated servers and would like to know which Anti Virus to use for a Windows dedicated server?
What other security measures do I need to take on the windows server as well?
Been hosting with Linux servers for years, one would almost expect that a security on a Windows server is "second nature", but I have some doubts about the security of these servers. We'll be using Windows 2003 standard & Windows 2003 Web edition.
I have been a user of sitepoint for quite a while now. I am developing software applications at present and keep bumping my head into the same old question.
Which is better, Linux or Windows servers. (Probably a question which depends on what they are used for of course.) In this case, they would be used to store a database for the application and therefore communicate with it etc.
The choice is, do I develop the application in .net and use windows or do I go down the PHP route and use Linux.
This is the options that have been explained to me, of course I am not a developer myself so am just hearing the advice I am told.
I'm writing a .Net app using SQL server, and so I'm looking for a Windows server hosting. Do they provide things like Remote Desktop and what not? Because on some of my tables, I have to be able to login and give permissions to users and things of that sort.
I was thinking of starting service provider of online backup service located in USA the data is stored in a vault (off site server)
Data replicated to another server at a another location.
Critical data is 128-bit encrypted, compressed, and then uploaded to a REMOTE server hosted by my company via Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) with enhanced security.
The client chooses what kind of encryption they want to use and they choose their Password (I don't have access to this info) With out their password they can NOT restore their information back Lose the password and the Data can not be restored its loss I have no idea what the passwords are.
Now all the info will be stored on this server
The question that comes to mind if the USA Government wanted to look for any information located in this storage server
Can they force the clients to give them access to this data ?
Talking to someone at storage pipe.com
He was saying that in Canada this info is protected and can not accessed by law
He was saying a lot of company's because of this are looking for off site storage in Canada because of this issue.
So from what I can understand if the storage server is located in the USA if the Government wants to look at the files they will force the clients to provide them access to these fies either by asking or by court order
But in Canada this not an option the files are protected by Law Now a lawyer I am not be it seems that if the company has nothing to hide it will not be and issue.
But like I said I have no idea what people or company's are backing up.
It can be anything!
All I do is store the backup data. All I know is the amount(size) of Data stored on the server.
The last thing I need is people banging on my door asking me to access these files.
Now if I had my server located in Canada they would be protected by law.?
This question, and many questions relating to this I am sure must have reasoning behind it. It basicly relates down to the following;
Why do game servers use up more CPU on Linux, opposed to Windows?
Some people say it doesnt, and that is true for some games, but most games I have found, the CPU usage of the game on a Linux based server is far higher.
Just as an example, most Steam games.
I really would like to know why, and how it could be reduced. What are some things I can install, or configure to make game servers run more smoothly or use less CPU on Linux?
If anyone has any ideas & thoughts related to this, please let me/us know, for im sure this is beneficial to all.
Does anyone know if running centOS 5.2 as a host OS on a dedicated server would be able to run both Linux and Windows VPS servers using virtuozzo? on their video it says you can however i cant find where/how to install a windows server 2003 template.
I have tried copy files from Linux server to Windows Server using WinSCP3 and it was so fast.
I am not sure who to copy files as well from Windows to Windows with same speed. I tried to use RDC between the Windows Servers and share one drive. But it wasn't fast as WinSCP3.
The minimum requirements that I am seeking for is that it must be a Windows 2000 or Windows XP machine with at least 1024 MB of DDR PC3200 RAM and at least a single-core 2 GHz CPU whether it be AMD or Intel (something suitable for a gameserver and webserver combo), 40GB SATA/RAID Harddrive, and a Full Duplex 100 Mbit port with plenty of bandwidth to run a 32-Player 66tic CSS Server.
The price range that I seek is between $60 to $120 per month.
We are in need of one windows servers with windows web or standard edition with atleast 5 RDP logins, i came to know from company that we have to pay for additional logins, the number of logins provided will be only 2 per server, is it true.
Other company says that we can create any number of user inside the server and access the server via RDP
