Who has them and who's good at it?
I have a client asking about a managed Windows server.
I've always had hosting where everything is pretty much already setup. I am now considering getting my own dedicated server. I see most good packages are Self Managed Servers.
I'm not a system admin and never had any experience managing and setting up my own server. Is this a lot of work? Is this something that is also pretty easily learned or does this really take a lot of knowledge?
I own a pretty high traffic soccer blog. Nothing out of the ordinary!
It generates an average of 8k unique visitors/day - but can reach 30+ unique/day.
According to the guy who is currently hosting it - it does around 30-50gb bandwidth per day.
I'm not sure if I even need a Dedicated server for this. However, the old host said that the HUGE peaks of traffic in the middle of the day are causing him problems.
I'm not very technical - just the writer of the blog - do a couple of other web developments aswell, but I've never really needed a dedicated server before!
Thus, I need this fully managed - and want it to basically work as a reseller hosting account (if thats possible).
I need this quickly as the website is going to be deleted by the end of THIS month! He just told me today . He was taking the revenue from the site in exchange for the hosting. I'd now like to just cough up and pay for it!
If anyone can give me any advise, do I need a dedicated server? Would a VPS do? What prices am I looking at? Are there any companies which suit my needs?
Im having some trouble with my current host and feel im also being charged a bit too much.
Is there any hosts (other than Hostgator) that offer managed servers with Cpanel? I realy need a better host as im going mad with my current one.
I have a friend/client who needs TWO Dedicated Game Servers and he wants them from me.
I have never sold a Game Servers and told him so, yet he insists that he want's to buy them from me.
Well, anyone knows where I can buy All Managed Game Servers and Resell them to him?
I am a noob and absolutely no idea how game servers function.
I would like to hear about sites providing fully managed servers.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have 2 managed dedicated server with one of the big company in US. we have been with them for years, and the backup plan we purchase is using Veritas.
For years the backup space usage counted from the max/highest backup space taken each day in 1 month.
but suddenly in the last few months the billing department start to sum all days backup for 1 month that make us exceed our backup usage crazily.
how the backup plan counted on your managed dedicated server.
how the hosting provider would back me up in setting up my vps, support in additional issues etc. with regards each of the above topics.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have checked several companies
modvps.com
lunarpages.com
wiredtree.com
knownhost.com
but not a single company provide managed Windows VPS Solution.
i really like modvps.com and wiredtree.com .. there packages are too good and the support and services is also good ..
Any one suggest a company which provide Managed Windows VPS package .. under 50$ or max 70$
I need a Windows VPS to run ASP.NET 2.0 applications because my current provider is having some issues that keep my VPS down. As i am new to Windows hosting so i need a managed plan.
Another thing is that it must be stable. I usually have VPSes with Knownhost and they are really stable ( just wish they offer windows vps ). I need something like them ( uptime > 99,99% ).
What options do i have?
Need the following specs from an established Managed Windows VPS provider with Ticket and Phone Support.
Server 2003
Helm 4
30-50GB Disk
1TB+ Bandwidth
1024 Memory
MySQL or WinSQL
2+ IP's
I'm currently running a small hosting business. We only have Linux servers but now some clients are requesting ASP and dot net support.
I don't have any experience with windows servers, that's why i need a managed one ( actually i have been running linux on my desktop + servers for more than 8 years, so i don't use windows for a long time ).
I probaly will have a dedicated one soon, but first i need to "feel it" running a VPS.
I am considering moving to dedicated server, what are risks with self managed server compared to managed?
Managed servers are very expensive for my needs.
When a colo vendor can consider themselves as a managed colocation provider? What make them different than *normal* colo service?
If you need a managed colo, why not go with managed server? With managed server, your vendor will take care about the server health, including software and hardware too
(I am mentioning to fully managed server vendors like Rackspace, don't tell me cheap managed servers)
I am not hosting any domains on this, only using it via remote desktop connection. I need at least 1GB of ram, 1mbps connection minimum.

What other security measures do I need to take on the windows server as well?
Been hosting with Linux servers for years, one would almost expect that a security on a Windows server is "second nature", but I have some doubts about the security of these servers. We'll be using Windows 2003 standard & Windows 2003 Web edition.
I have been a user of sitepoint for quite a while now. I am developing software applications at present and keep bumping my head into the same old question.
Which is better, Linux or Windows servers. (Probably a question which depends on what they are used for of course.) In this case, they would be used to store a database for the application and therefore communicate with it etc.
The choice is, do I develop the application in .net and use windows or do I go down the PHP route and use Linux.
This is the options that have been explained to me, of course I am not a developer myself so am just hearing the advice I am told.
I've been watching Netcraft for a while, and it seems like windows keeps gaining ground on Linux

How long to your think this trend will continue?
I'm writing a .Net app using SQL server, and so I'm looking for a Windows server hosting. Do they provide things like Remote Desktop and what not? Because on some of my tables, I have to be able to login and give permissions to users and things of that sort.

Why do game servers use up more CPU on Linux, opposed to Windows?
Some people say it doesnt, and that is true for some games, but most games I have found, the CPU usage of the game on a Linux based server is far higher.
Just as an example, most Steam games.
I really would like to know why, and how it could be reduced. What are some things I can install, or configure to make game servers run more smoothly or use less CPU on Linux?
If anyone has any ideas & thoughts related to this, please let me/us know, for im sure this is beneficial to all.
Just to add in, I use CentOS 4.6 Final.
Does anyone know if running centOS 5.2 as a host OS on a dedicated server would be able to run both Linux and Windows VPS servers using virtuozzo? on their video it says you can however i cant find where/how to install a windows server 2003 template.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have tried copy files from Linux server to Windows Server using WinSCP3 and it was so fast.
I am not sure who to copy files as well from Windows to Windows with same speed. I tried to use RDC between the Windows Servers and share one drive. But it wasn't fast as WinSCP3.
The minimum requirements that I am seeking for is that it must be a Windows 2000 or Windows XP machine with at least 1024 MB of DDR PC3200 RAM and at least a single-core 2 GHz CPU whether it be AMD or Intel (something suitable for a gameserver and webserver combo), 40GB SATA/RAID Harddrive, and a Full Duplex 100 Mbit port with plenty of bandwidth to run a 32-Player 66tic CSS Server.
The price range that I seek is between $60 to $120 per month.
We are in need of one windows servers with windows web or standard edition with atleast 5 RDP logins, i came to know from company that we have to pay for additional logins, the number of logins provided will be only 2 per server, is it true.
Other company says that we can create any number of user inside the server and access the server via RDP

View 2 Replies View RelatedI don't use anything like active directory to manage my windows servers. I just manage them individually.
I need to make a change to terminal services configuration on all of them. I don't want to login to each one and manually edit it.
How the hell can I do this in Windows?
In Linux i could knock up a script in about 5 minutes with expect that would login to every single one and make the change i wanted.
If you met any problems with downloading from Odin servers (autoinstall.plesk.com or autoinstall-win.pp.parallels.com) - please describe this problem briefly and specify geographic location (country, city) of your Plesk server.
