Downtown Host Setup And Support Review

May 29, 2008

I have recently left dreamhost in search of a more reliable and speedy host. The only thing I will be missing from dreamhost is their customer support which is very good. In fact I didn't think it could be topped by anyone...but I was proven wrong (at least so far).

So what host did I choose? Downtown host obviously (based on title : P). This is not a FULL host review, just initial setup and support which normally would be a huge ordeal for me without help.

Anyway, I bought my hosting a few days ago and requested a site transfer in their support ticket system. I was greeted within 10 minutes by the support team walking me through the steps I needed to take in order to get it going. Once I gave them the proper information, the transfer was done in under an hour for four-five sites. I then tried setting up the sites by connecting them to the new databases that they transferred my data into. Didn't work like I thought it would so I continued to mess around with it until I basically screwed up my initial database...oops. Another ticket to support and within 10 min I get a reply that they will transfer the sites and repopulate the database again for me. Very nicely I might add. No sarcastic emails because the dumb noob messed up his database or anything : ]

The new transfer was complete and I set up everything without a hitch (since I figured out what I did wrong).

All this was done through a series of around 20-30 support emails. Every one was answered often within minutes. None over 10 minutes. All were pleasant answers and none were snotty in the least. Thank you Jorge, Sabastian and Diego for helping me with the problems. Their support indeed beat the crap out of dreamhost's. I've rarely gotten a response that quickly.

My package is nothing to scoff at either. 5GB of space and 100GB of bandwidth for around 65+ a year. That's right a year. The sites have run perfectly so far and the speeds have been VERY fast compared to dreamhost's.

I'd say I am incredibly happy with my initial setup with downtownhost. I will post a follow up review in a few months addressing my experiences with reliability and such. I expect it to be another good review, as I haven't been able to find a negative one for downtownhost on WHT.

Downtown Host : Ongoing Review

Aug 19, 2009

I recently picked up an account with Downtown Host to host my dad's site and wanted to start a thread that I will update as time goes by. I know there's a "honeymoon period" with most hosts and sometimes, like my wife (LOL.. kidding *hides*), things change as things progress..but I have been very impressed.

So, to get things started...

Ordering Process

Easy as it usually is these days. Although the space isn't really needed, I picked up their Bronze plan for 6 months and it worked out to be about $50 USD thanks to a handy coupon. This is the first time I have ever had enough preliminary confidence in a host to go for 6 months up front (outside of getting a ridiculous deal) and I hope to not to be disappointed and regret the decision.

DTH does use a phone call fraud verification system on new orders which I appreciate. I think it shows that they are proactive in sorting out bad purchases and is one of the nicer fraud-detection interfaces I have come across. I believe Wirenine is the only other host I have used that employs a similar system.

Jorge (Jedito on WHT) was very helpful in the ordering process which, again, I appreciate and was pro-active in helping me getting me on board quickly even going so far as to drop me a line welcoming me aboard.

Initial Transfer, Etc.

Once again, very easy. There were a few hiccups that were issues on the previous host's side in terms of creating cPanel back ups so things could get moved over. Both techs were extremely helpful and kept me updated throughout the process, notifying me of even the slightest issue (again, none on their side) in getting files moved over for two domains, some of which included add-on domains.

One of the sites I moved over included a wordpress blog that was previous its own account under a reseller plan so I had a question regarding the process of switching over the MySQL database information to ensure the blog worked off the tip. Again, DTH was very helpful and gave me instructions on what I needed to do to make sure there was no interruption in serving the blog. They certainly didn't have to help me with the changes so it was really nice of them to do so.

Performance

In a word - fast. Once the nameservers switched over for the main site (cincihost-dot-com), I entered the address and *bam*. No lagged delays with larger-sized images, they just popped up. Previously, the page loaded somewhat "in order". Not anymore. I hit "Enter" and it was there. Nice.

cPanel loads fast and in checking the server load here and there, it is always below 1.00.

Support

As I have alluded to above, support is fantastic. The first ticket I submitted took a bit to be responded to which was worrying. Who knows what happened, but it was responded to, oddly, shortly after I mentioned it to someone. From that point, support has been lightning fast. As I think happens a lot of times, I have submitted a few tickets in order to get everything set up and going and they have all been responded to or updated within 15 to 20 minutes. I recently submitted a ticket to have my cPanel theme changed (it default to a RVSkin which I do not like) and it was resolved in, literally, one minute. Fastest support I have ever experienced.

Summation

Really the only thing I didn't like was that cPanel loads the green RVSkin which seems cartoony to me and I much prefer the original x3 theme. This was quickly changed so no biggie.

Everything else has been absolutely fantastic as you can probably surmise.

I look forward to being hosted with DTH and have a good feeling that my father and I will be with them for a long time to come.

Thanks to Jorge, Sebastian and everyone at Downtown Host!

Hostgator Or Downtown Host

Sep 15, 2008

They both have plans starting at $5 USD / month. One thing that concerns me is, Hostgator seems to provide more that Downtown host:

- 350gb disk space
- 3,000gb bandwidth

Downtownhost:

- 5gb disk space
- 100gb bandwidth

For the price of roughly $5 USD. Why is there such a difference with the two? Does this mean Hostgator is better off?

Free PHP Host With .htaccess Support?

Sep 2, 2007

I'm looking for a free web host to host my portfolio. I need:

1) Php/MySQL Support
2) .htaccess support, so I can have search-engine-friendly URLs.
3) Preferably I'd like there to only be a text/graphic ad at the bottom of the page, or to be able to pay a small fee and have the ad removed. (No popups)

Is there any such host available, or can any of you guys here who sell web hosting set me up with one such account?

How Many Users Will My Host/site Be Able To Support

Feb 12, 2009

I know this sounds a difficult question, but any rough answer is better than none. I am sure there are rough expectations.

Will it be 10's, 100's, 1,000's, 10,000's etc.

I am looking at a dedicated server Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.0GHz, 1GB memory with network speed of 100mb (with gigabyte burst whatever that means).

[url]- bronze package - if anyone is interested)

I will run one site only. The site has very heavy database usage and normal page views with average images.

Video / most photos are hosted and delivered with a seperate, top-quality CDN.

Your answer might be... "You should get about 1000 surfing, using database etc. before you notice a slow down" etc.

I suppose the thing is.. at what stage would I need a second dedicated server / package upgrade / what will this server get me?

Fast UK Host With MySQL Support

Apr 18, 2008

I currently run a website which is hosted with storminternet.co.uk and, while I can't fault their reliability, the (lack of) performance is undermining the usefulnes of the website.

Key features of the website are:

- completely MySQL/PHP driven so the host needs MySQL support and processor power . Some of the MySQL queries are fairly complex and call upon multiple tables of large datasets.

- monthly bandwidth is much less of an issue than speed (if that's not an oxymoron) as the number of visitors is currently <250/day.

- most if not all of the visitors are from the UK

In terms of budget I would be willing to go £150+/year if the service was top quality.

Web Host That Support 'resume' For Large Downloads

Apr 4, 2009

I have a problem in that I sell somewhat large download files, and Hostmonster told me their servers don't support 'resume'.

So if my customer has a power failure, etc., during the download, he'll have to start all over again.

So it looks like I'm going to have to move my download files to a different server.

Can anyone recommend a good host that will store my digital downloads and, that, most importantly, support 'resume'.

Setup Subdomain To Another Host

May 3, 2007

to setup 1.domain.com to another host

I have domain (domain.com) which is on dedicate server with root access.

also have 2-nd-domain.com which is on hostgator host(where can i add domains via addon domains)

now i need to setup 1.domain.com subdomain on hostgator.

how can i do it ?

pls correct me, if i'm wrong

1. via Directadmin Subdomain Management tool (on domain.com) add "1" subdomain

2. check "DNS Management" section -> 1.domain.com is on main domain.com IP

Unfortunately there isn't any option to edit this record. i can only delete it and add manually. (i know, that i can do it via SSH - > edit config file, but i don't have enought experience to edit files via SSH. just know, few commands, how to archive, reboot, move, etc ...)

delete this record and add manually

DNS Management -> Add Domain Records ->
1.domain.com - A record =IP of hostgatore host

btw, did i need to add NS records?

3. go to 2-nd-domain.com and try to add 1.domain.com via addon domains.

hmm

it seems, that i'm doing something wrong, as i got

Quote:

Using nameservers with the following IPs: **.***.***.**2, **.***.***.**1 (my main domain IPs) Bind reconfiguring on gator using rndc

Created DNS entry for 1.domain.com
account is created, but IP-s are wrong

Shopping For Host To Support Multiple WordPress Blogs

Sep 26, 2009

I am using aplus.net to host a WordPress blog and want to create more blogs.

Since aplus.net took 26 hours to restore my blog when somehow it was corrupted (no explanation on what they did), I have decided I need to host it someplace where I have full control.

I would be prepared to reinstall WordPress on my own. I also want to have the ability to control redirects. aplus provides a handful of very weak tools for managing the site.

I'm looking for a host that would allow me to manage multiple domains, and multiple instances of WordPress. I'm prepared to manage the MySQL db (if I have to, though I would prefer it if I had support for this).

MDDHosting.com Review (A+ For Great Support)

Sep 30, 2009

I wanted to take a minute to throw out a review of a good host I found a few months back. I remember while I was looking for them that I found a ton of "Avoid XYZ host" or "ABC host is terrible," but very few reports of a host that people would suggest TO use.

In any case, I transferred my business domain (www.thecliplady.com) over to MDDHosting (www.mddhosting.com) a few months back and everything has been fantastic. As I recall, my account was setup quickly, and they helped me to transfer from my old server and setup my SSL cert right away. Since then, I have had almost 0 downtime, was always notified of maintenance or issues that might affect my account, and generally everything was quite snappy (pages loaded quickly, etc).

But, the one thing that really blows me away and is truly fantastic about MDDHosting is the support. In my time with them, I have filled 5 support tickets. In the worst case, I waited about 25 minutes for a response. Yesterday, my ticket was responded to in 2 minutes, and completely resolved in 3 minutes (It was a simple issue, but it was nice to not wait to finish deploying my new site).

Here is a screenshot of that last ticket: [url]

To sum it up, I feel very confident in suggesting MDDHosting to anyone who values great support and a stable server. Plus, the prices aren't bad either. Make sure you at least check them out, seriously!

Apache :: Setup A Virtual Host

Aug 7, 2014

I have a fresh Ubuntu 14.04 install (desktop). I installed Apache, php and mysql from APT and updated everything.I tried to setup a virtual host using these directions: URL...I followed them to the letter:

o I created a folder /var/www/mydomain.local/public_html
o I copied the 000-default.conf in sites available and modified it
o I added mydomain.local to my hosts file (with IP of 127.0.0.1
o I used a2ensite to enable the host
o I used service apache2 reload

When I went to mydomain.local in firefox, it took me to the default host main page.I tried a restart of the service and even a reboot of the computer. No change. On a theory, I used a2dissite to remote 000-default from the enabled site list and reloaded the service. I got the home page for mydomain.local after that.

I created a named host called localhost and reloaded the apache. When I went to http://localhost it took me to the mydomain.local homepage. Rebooted the computer. Now, localhost gives me the apache default home page and mydomain.local does not work at all (I get a server not found).

I get the feeling that there is an apache configuration item I am missing but I cannot find it.

Review Of Zone.net 24x7 Support (long)

Aug 6, 2008

First of all, before I comment on Zone.net's support, I want to say that their servers are top-notch, fast, and extremely reliable. I have absolutely no issues with Zone.net's servers, but I am a little disappointed with their support.

On their website they tote "superior 24x7 support and service" but I can't say that I've experienced "superior" support. It may have just been a fluke with the three times I've had to use their support in the past month that I've had a VPS with them, but I certainly was not impressed with their support and service.

Let me start from the beginning.

I was doing some research for a new VPS that I needed and I read tons of reviews and recommendations and found that Zone.net came highly recommended. I checked out their website and found out that they offered fully-managed VPS options and the price and specs seemed right. So at 18:28 Pacific time on July 8, I placed my order.

Now, I know that it can take a while to provision a VPS. This was not my first VPS, but all of my providers, current and past, provisioned my VPS anywhere from 4-8 hours. I was not ordering a custom VPS, I ordered the VM100 that was offered on their site and I ordered it as is.

In their knowledgebase they state how long it should take to set up a VPS account with them.
I'm quoting here:

Once an order is verified through our billing department with the billing agent, we are able to process and activate your order in under 30 minutes. The verification process can be instant, or take up to 24 hours depending on various factors.

When I hadn't heard anything after waiting about 4 hours or so (I honestly can't remember the time when I contacted live support), I contacted support via their live support. The agent was very pleasant and said that it could take up to 24 hours and that if I had placed my order in the morning, it would have been done now.

So I waited until 23 1/2 hours and I submitted a ticket at 18:01 on July 9th requesting an update as to my order. I also asked if there was a problem with verifying me for fraud purposes and if I could offer anything to speed this along, to let me know. I didn't hear anything back on the ticket.

I later that evening placed a call to their support line. The agent again was very pleasant and said that he couldn't access anything from sales but that he would give a message to Jeffrey and he would call me first thing the next day.

I didn't receive a phone call .......

Setup Review Of LimeStone Networks

May 29, 2009

After hitting my head with few of the dedi providers, i came across Lime Stone Networks. I went to their site, selected the server I wanted with addons etc. I initiated live chat for sales query and instantly all was finalized.

I paid the amount and after 4-5 hours the server was ready and details were in my email. This is the most speedy server setup i had seen. Their RockWare control panel is very flexible and easy to use. Most of the things which have/are not provided by other dedi providers are in their control panel for easy access.

Basic stuff like remote reboots, dns management etc. is free and already included with your server. Their support is also very good, I opened a few tickets with them all were answered within 1-2 mins. Its been more than 10 days with them now and my all data is moved to the new server and everything is running fine and stable.

The only thing is that their sales rep was unable to given a discount of 0.99 cents! My order totalled to $200.99 and I asked sales rep to reduce the 0.99 to make it rounded but he did'nt. I know they won't built a palace and neither will I but what the heck if he could ?! Just would have pleased me.

Anyways overall the experience is great and support is good. There were also some abuses on the server by some of my clients and they were able to find them asap and informed me and gave ample time to resolve the issues.

I suggest that if you're also looking for a dedi then be sure to visit their site. I will post more review on this after few months.

Aplus.net Initial Setup Review

Aug 13, 2008

Bought a new server from Aplus.net last night.

Got a great deal on a simple server for a side project. Paying $59.99 a month for the server which makes it very affordable for medium-size projects.
General:

* Setup Fee: Free
* Celeron 1.7 GHz CPU
* 512 MB RAM (upgradeable to 2GB)
* 60 GB IDE Hard Drive
* 500 GB Monthly Transfer
* 5 IP addresses*
* Premium Set-Up Options

The sign-up was quick and easy and I was sent an authorization email. I authorized and was able to immediately log into my account.

I processed the order a bit late at night so the next morning I received a call on my cell from my personal tech rep saying the server was already up and running (they said it would take three day, more like 8 hours)

He offered any assistance to help me get up and running and gave me a direct line to his phone in case of anything. Then he emailed his contact info and an introduction to my e-mail as I requested.

So far I am very pleased with the setup and the individualized attention, although I may not require it, it is very comforting to know it is there.

First impressions mean a lot to me and Aplus.net's first impression is stellar to say the least.

Hope this helps, I will be posting a review a bit down the line on how it progresses.

Peer1 Miami Sales And Setup Review

Apr 13, 2008

I just moved 3 servers to colo with Peer1 in Miami. I just had 3 great years of colo with Fluidhosting so my standards are high. I wanted to buy directly from a Tier2, however, and Miami is close enough that I can access the datacenter if I need to which will be a plus.

My sales rep, Delynn, was great. Many of you are hosts and know that buying directly from Tier1's and Tier2's can be a pain in the butt because of the typical big company sales approach. You know when they refuse to give you a price and instead insist on knowing what your "budget" is... Delynn didn't do that, Peer1 has some great deals for smaller setups like 1/8th cabinets w/ 5mbps. They also gave me a month to month contract for a modest increase over the full year contract amount.

As for setup: The servers were installed within 2 hours of arriving on a Saturday. The tech gave me a call and confirmed everything was ok and that my 3 servers + unmanaged switch were doing ok on the 5 amp circuit since my servers are pretty low power usage. Their NOC is very smart and fast and available 24/7 afaik.

Important things to note: Luckily the day before my servers arrived I had an "oh @#%@" moment when I realized that I'd probably need to send them my own switch/power strip/ethernet cables. Sure enough this was the case and I overnighted a box to arrive at the same time as my servers. IMO this is a rather small caveat. It's not a big deal to send them a 50-100 dollar 100mbps unmanaged switch that's only using 0.2 amps.

So it's been "so far so good" I've been a fan of the Peer1 network since years ago when Fluidhosting used to carry them. As one would expect the Peer1 Miami pings to Europe/Asia aren't as good as the Internap routes from the northeast but I'm expecting the nearly flawless Peer1 network connectivity that I remember. I will give a network update in a few months.

Review Of Services: Mike Bailey / Mikey / Ub3r - Server Support / Administration

Jul 29, 2006

I've been a member of WHT for more than five years now, and while I skim WHT daily, I rarely start new threads. My recent experience with Mike Bailey (aka ub3r) deserving of a review, and I hope that others find it informative and useful.

I only know Mike(y) through WHT, and over the years have had an opportunity to read his posts. I've previously contacted him asking for assistance with web design, but he remained humble and pointed me in another direction, with the explanation that my needs could be better met by a more experienced web designer (I'm not sure I agree).

For the past six months I've had a problem interpreting and responding to a support message by one of my VPS providers. I would imagine that the problem and solution were a relatively easy fix, but I needed someone to take the time to help me step-by-step. After contacting Mikey, he followed up with me immediately, and before quoting a price made sure he understood the scope of the problem.

Mike not only emailed me step-by-step instructions on fixing the problem, but he actually took time to explain how it worked. As a teacher I must say that he did a great job explaining the topic in a clear manner, and his willingness to answer follow up questions was very helpful.

The truth is I'm sure he's dealt with far more difficult server issues, but his level of professionalism and willingness to help were evident throughout this entire process. The value of services he provides, and his willingness to not only fix the problem, but also explain the steps, demonstrates his commitment to providing great customer service.
